An alternative solution would be simply to 3D print a replica battery shell and route a lightweight cable from a power supply directly to the contacts. One could even sacrifice a real battery for this purpose and eliminate the problem altogether.
I don't own a 3D printer nor do I possess the desire to learn how to model and print. You'd also need to solder that cable to the proper conductors. If you made one of these and sold it, I'd buy it.
I guess they reason for the battery drain is because of the inside out tracking. The XR2 chip does all the tracking and that has never been done with a native pcvr hmd before so there must be a lot of complications there. So, I wonder is attaching the lighthouse face plate simply would disable the XR2 and eliminate the need of extra power, making it easier to drive with a simpler cable,. That would save the situation for many I think. First proponent of the surprisingly actually good Pimax. I will definitely come here to see how it develops. Good to see critique of a product by someone that does enjoy it.
Just my opinion, the power brick solution is good enough, I would rather take a break after 4 hours or probably quite a long while before it. (I have a Focus 3 I play a lot of Pavlov with, I almost never run out of the 2 hour battery life). Battery recharges by the time I get back and I don't have to mess with a second cable. Kudos to you for hacking that solution together though!
This FOV and battery stuff is making me just want to order an 8kx and wait to see if the 12k has solutions to all of this (or if it ever even releases).
I've had an 8KX for 12 months. It is very good for the FOV. I bought a Pico 4 to see what pancake lenses were like. And honestly I have to admit that the FOV is not everything. There is really a clear increase in quality with the pancakes that we forget the much smaller FOV and rediscover games. I believe the Pimax 12k should have fresnels and I pass the hand. Having a battery constantly plugged into a quick charger is not a good idea. The battery is still draining, and while it’s being drained, you’re trying to charge it that puts added strain on the cells and it will age the battery faster.
The inside-out tracking needs the internal Qualcomm chipset. The chipset should be powered by usb cable without battery when not in standalone mode. Bad design here imo.

People that buy Pimax are not looking for standalone. They should leave standalone to Meta and focus on being the number one PC VR headset. Just my opinion.
I mean I don't necessarily see it as a negative, as long as it's implemented correctly. The battery could make for a good counterweight, which could actually, possibly, make the headset more comfortable and stable rather than less. And having onboard processing capabilities could be great for quite a few things. For a headset like the 12k, no cable could provide enough bandwidth. So there has to be some hardware on the headset anyway if you want to enjoy full quality. Whether it's through foveated rendering or through something like more advanced encoding or upscaling, there has to be some computing capabilities to make this possible. But another great use would be media consumption. I'd love to use such a high quality headset for something like that. But doing that while tethered would kinda suck if you wanna just sit back in a chair or even lay down. Instead it could use wifi or some onboard storage. The only dealbreaker is when it does something stupid such as not actually allowing proper standalone. But I guess they messed that up. Surely they could've just made a cable specifically for power delivery? Maybe even with fiberoptic so it could reach distances up to 10 meters or more while also supporting the 288 Gbps bandwidth that a headset like the 12k will actually be needing, so that once there's actually a way to get that much data out of a computer, the 12k is ready to start using it. It feels Pimax products are more and more being designed not enough by true VR enthusiasts but by greedy Pimax salesmen and money men, who are not knowledgeable or even care about VR, just maximum sales. It explains so much their behavior now and their products. It's a great shame as it will always dilute their product quality. They should be a niche high end HMD company, instead they are a glitchy poorly thought out Swiss army knife of VR company, and it's not working at all. I would never buy an expensive product from a company like this, as no matter how much funding they get they will always mess up and will inevitably fail

But I do agree that the Crystal is drawing an insane amount of power somewhere, obviously they've said that the current version is totally unoptimized, designed to be stable not last long, but i mean... Unsure about how it will be in the end. :)
@@VoxelLoop i had a quest 2 with official link cable it stayed at 100% when connected to virtual link on 6900xt or drained to 89% after few hours. And it is standalone not pcvr like crystal
also a three-pronged cable together with a fourth cable is the very soul of Pimax
I would never have thought that using BOTH the USB-A and the USB-C charging in parallel would have any effect - an either/or would be more typical. Anyway, thanks for sharing! Hopefully the consumer headsets will ship with the improved cable that Pimax has been promising, although knowing Pimax, they probably will have the cable ready a few months later :-/
I'm guessing that the usb-c on the side is directly powering the xr2?
Reverb G2 has power box that splits to the wall AC in addition to USB C to computer and a third for display port. The computer doesn't supply enough power so not surex why a power brick is not being included.
I found a good fix that I will share with everyone also. I cancelled my preorder.
How did you cancel? I couldn't find the option!
Can u tell how good pimax crystal will be for watching p****n (adult video)??
very good! you can see every detail ;)
Lol. Probably overkill for this use case, but it should be great at it nevertheless. I think the limitation here would be video resolution/quality rather than the headset
you should credit Sebastian from MRTV for the solution with the USB-charger.
Yes, I talked with Sebastian about that, but the solution came from Pimax right after I posted the review video xD
@@voodoodevr-en ok cool
That battery will deteriorate very fast with quick charger, not really an ideal solution for dedicated PCVR headset.Needing batteries for PCVR mode is stupid and has to be resolved by Pimax before we can take this seriously.
You are right unless they give us 4 batteries which should last 5 years or more then im happy
I think at 8 to 9 connectors we would break even on battery!
please microsoft flight simulator 2020 through the lens 🙏 ?
is the battery life unlimited or not with the extra usb c cable? this is a huge detail... please investigate further...
Yeah no thx lol.. This is ridiculous. So this is their fix or is this a temp fix before the retail version.. So freaking confused.
This seems like a pre-release
I guess everyone forgot that other headsets like the Pimax 8k and Reverb G2 have a powe boxes that have to be plugged into the wall. I don't know why that was not just included.
@@laartwork Because Pimax. They lack attention to detail sometimes and fill your head with all these big features.
Is anyone actually buying a Crystal for standalone?
Nope, but for wireless potential yes.
I'm extremely interested, but primax keeping doing stupid things like needing a battery to play on PC
I agree will never buy a pimax product at all, maybe somnium VR1 will be good
i heard that ruins the battery
Who said that and where ? VoodooDE loves this comment, so is it true or not ? FFS there is so much misinformation around PImax it is impossible to sort fact from fiction !!!
@@Mark_BlanesI’ve just managed to get my Pimax working and I bought a USB C to USB A and a 130 Watt charger. The battery now charges when I am not using the Crystal but I only have 1 hour and 20 minutes before the battery runs out still.
This is so frustrating!
The problems this headset has is becoming comical, so when tethered it still uses the battery and the work around is to just plug the battery in a quick charge adapter.
The weight of 1.2kg for this thing is insane! No thanks. 4 cables, LOL.
They need to get it fixed asap to not require a battery at all
Nevertheless, a 2 battery is mandatory and = additional costs
it's included in the package
LMAO This is crazy XD
I don't know, everyone wants sharpness sharpness, it's like how sharp do you Really need it?
I just want a really good clear Fov and to be honest, wireless. I thought the pimax 8kx was decent enough but I just got tired of feeling the cable and I had a great cable set-up but when you turn to much there's no way of not feeling the tension. So I went back to the quest 2 and even though the pro was decent, I was really looking forward to this being tethered free but it doesn't seem like this is a thing, kinda sad..
Good video Tho...
It is a thing. They will have wireless 6e and wiigig. I feel the same way, but I can deal with the wire for a while until the wireless comes out.
@@justaguydoinstuff I'm sure there will be some caveats to that as well.
Yup. I will wait till its wireless is operational, then I may consider buying.
As sharp as my eyes can see on my 4K monitor.
12k wen 🙃
15 months until it's on Amazon
My Neo 3 Link is plugged into a $3 9v adapter runs unlimited for PCVR. This stuff is just laughable
Really a mix of bad design decisions. I guess it happens when you want an all-in-one solution.
How come this whole product has such a sketchy feel to it? This thing will weigh over 2 pounds. This launch is looking more and more like a complete mess
They should rid of xr2 chip or give us 2 version to choose from. XR2 chip is totally useless for pc vr gamers. They better give us 2 batteries
The XR2 is primarily there for the inside out tracking. I believe standalone is an afterthought and pretty much a bonus. And yes, it comes with 2 batteries. I wonder how long a battery will last when they release the WiGig module though...
@@vicktorfilmbusker5492 website said 2 battery but recent pimax interview said it might be one so be prepare for extra $100 and also pimax start charging tax on Crystal only so theres another $130
Couldn’t agree more. Get rid of stand alone, the batteries, the terribly tracked controllers and you have potentially the best pc vr experience on the market. Big screen have 0 competitors now 😂
Pico 4 is way better than this nonsense! Higher fov and lighter headset and looks better and with better tracking
On the other hand it's blurry compared to the crystal, also no local dimming so bad blacks , worse colours
@@x32i77 Pico 4 is blurry? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 what a joke! it is very sharp! and local dimming doesn’t make the blacks perfect! If you want perfect blacks then go buy PSVR 2…
I'm glad you're happy with your Pico 4, but it has way less resolution, so no, it won't look better. It also has less FoV.
@@cia4gent128 I've own psvr2 but I will get the crystal aswell since it's a true eye opener interms of clarity and resolution. I owned the Varjo Aero. Once you saw this resolution, there is no going back . All VR games do look completely different on high res vr displays .
Pico 4 is unfortunately not near that level since it has no Display Port and the streaming is not ideal compared to display port
@@r448191 lol The pico 4 res is 2,160 x 2,160 pixels per eye…and that’s more than enough for a sharp image! it’s sharper than index and G2 and the quest pro, PSVR2!
And what PC can run at the native res of the Crystal? None! Not even my RTX4090 🤣 so cut the nonsense
