    Excellent guide, and nicely explained. One often overlooked tip is to powercycle your Modem, Router, Network devices in the chain and Gaming Device by unplugging the mains power for 2 minutes every month or two. This can solve a lot of routing issues and clear the caches, making them perform optimally.

    Generally, before changing MTU values id recommend people use PING with some flags to see if the packet is being fragmented, if the packet is not being fragment, it is not much to gain from it. The other thing to consider with MTU is What type of connection you have and any tunnels like gre or vpn and minus the overhead 1500 - 20 =1480 but ping gameserver -f -l 1480 and 1500 is a good start

    5Ghz isn't necessarily the best if you're at the outer reaches of your router's range, not good for gaming but if you can't improve that, run speed tests on both 5Ghz and 2.4GHz bands to see what gives you the best results.

    Great video. I tend to get packet loss. Now what happens when I decide to port forward because we have My primary (PC gaming) and 2 additional consoles in same house the others use. If we want to play games such as call of duty and port 3074 is required on both systems to be open to play the game, what would be your recommendation? I’ll be making my pc device priority.

      Same issues on my setup! My ping is usually 11-19 ms for Call Of Duty with an open NAT, but constantly dealing with random packet loss/burst

      Dude thats insane because im having the same issue on my Nighthawk XR500! In DumaOs in ping heatmap, it shows me located in Chicago but i live in Upstate NY!! When i ping games to test ping, Chicago always shows 19 ping and NY shows 39-45 ping!

      @punksnotdead518 you should be able to change radius start point to your home location in the Geo tab/page. Also should be able to draw your own covered areas by clicking on polygon in the same geo tab

    Question: How do I find a server closer to my area if I'm living overseas in Thailand? I surprisingly have pretty fast 5G internet speed (565+mbps dwnld & 160+mbps upld), but when I try to play COD online, my ping is really high (150+mbps) and it's very glitchy. As you stated, I'm guessing that I'm connected to an American server when trying to game online, so how would I find a server to connect to that's closer to me to reduce my ping? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    I recently switched from Xbox series X to a gaming PC and on my Xbox being hard wired I can go in the settings and test my NAT type to make it open while playing call of duty warzone but on my PC I’m stuck in a moderate NAT type and being moderate it’s restricting the lobbies the game can put me in and my ping went from 10-20 ping on Xbox to anywhere from 30-56 ping!! I’ve tried everything to open my NAT aside from port forwarding which just seems like a nightmare and I don’t want to screw something up so I’m looking into a gaming router to run from my internet box and then hard wire my PC straight to the gaming router but I don’t wanna spend that much money if it’s not gonna make a difference!!

  • @Matt1nWangas

    Down to earth explanation, but what about multiple consoles playing the same games at once? port forwarding does not allow for multiple connections? is that correct? if so how do you set up a router to allow smooth gaming across the network with the same console playing the same games e.g xboxes with MW2 or similar?

    • @TechManPat
      @TechManPat  Рік тому +3

      You can set up multiple port-forwards to individual devices, you can run multiple devices at home with each having their own port forward

    Quick question, I have a tp-link router with wifi coming from the arris surfboard sgb10 modem, so would it even be smart to connect the tp-link router to the modem and use a wired connection from the router to my xbox? And what operation mode should my tp-link router be on, AP mode or router mode?

    • @troy028
      @troy028 Рік тому +1

      Put your surfboard sgb10 modem into bridge mode which turns off wifi and then setup you tp link router. Then run everything from the tp link router. Then you can make changes to you tp link router like port forwarding and such stuff that you want to change.

    • @troy028
      @troy028 Рік тому +1

      Keep the router in router mode. Not ap mode. If you follow what I said above. That's the best way to have it. I have a surfboard s33 which is just a modem without wifi connected to my tp link archer ax1100. You don't want 2 router connected doing the same thing. That's why I said to put your surfboard into bridge mode.

    Hi I have a D-link DWR 978 5g router and wounder what Ping Interval is or what it does, it was 60 as defult and when I use 30 it goes smother but below 30 I getting slow response time with higher up and down speed.
    conected to it with cable cat6 to PC download speed 370,97 Mbit/s and upload 38,59 Mbit/s and response 14,92 ms I get package loss in cs2 some times and I have another router conected with limit of 100Mbit/s up/down on another router thats mainly used for phones and other stuff, no one is conected directly to 5G router.
    using fiber network was so expensive and was 100/100 up and down cost twice monthly

      Bufferbloat has nothing to do with ISP's. It's a home network problem. SQM ensures that no single person can hog all the bandwidth and get ping spikes in games.
