Acabei de assistir hoje, esse filme em homenagem ao meu falecido pai, justamente no dia de hoje,24/8, que partiu.durante toda a minha infância eu sempre ouvia ele comentar sobre esse filme.deve tê-lo tocado profundamente.e da minha parte,me tocou também.
Também acabei de ver agora. Ouvi ontem. Há muitos anos tb me lembro da minha mãe falar neste filme (ou no livro). É uma história de amor triste e sobre o que o rancor pode fazer nos corações. Ainda assim gostei de ver o filme 😉

Já li o livro ha décadas e não me lembrava mais de como era. Hoje acabei de assistir o filme e me impressionei com a história. Uma obra do cinema de 1939, com ótimos atores e interpretação impecável. A história é triste e recheada de amor obsessivo, fantasias, ódio, rancor, e um pouco de misticismo. Sei que não tem nada a ver mas me lembrei de "O Conde de Monte Cristo". Obrigado pela postagem.

I am surprised why did Merle Oberon not win an academy award for "Wuthering Heights." Her acting is out of the world? She is so natural!
1939 was a crowded year for the Academy Awards and there were many fine actresses up for awards and the one that was ahead of the pack was Vivian Leigh of Gone With The Wind!

Watched this movie in high school in my English class it was on an old projector it took two days to watch the whole movie. This was in 1979-80 and never forgot it such a classic movie even for a boy from East Los Angeles. Thanks to my English teacher Mr. Wolfe.

a good mystery movie, simply adore them.
Gorgeous. Deservedly a classic. While I don't condone Heathcliff's behavior, I certainly understand it, and I sympathize. Lifelong mistreatment, making one feel like a beggar, can do that to a person. Cathy and her brother, in a way, brought the tragedy upon themselves. The bottom line is that Heathcliff reacted to their reprehensible behavior.
The point he made during the deathbed scene was on target: she broke both their hearts because she had opted for comfort, respectability, a kind of false morality and vanity, over Heathcliff's and her own authentic love. He was generally regarded as unworthy, or worse, by most people around him. The movie made it clear that Cathy cared how others would perceive their union, and that Heathcliff would not be able to provide for her. Had Heathcliff been encouraged, treated fairly and humanely, he would not have emerged a monster.

One of the best scenes is with the lady playing the harpsichord. No words. Mesmerising acting from both Olivier and Oberon. They act with their eyes and make you know the pain and heartache they're both feeling, especially Olivier with that anguish look.
Right! I just watched that a few times. But more than that. When she looks back, she sees Isabella look up at Heathcliff. Her eyes subtly go down and up and down and up. She realizes what Heathcliff is going to do - and there is a look of fear and horror on her face. Then cut to a close-up of the harpsichord being played in a sharp angled shot that is disconcerting and, unlike other shots in the film, is very grating visually. Beautifully done by director Wyler and DP Toland. As well as Oberon and Olivier.

I read this book when I was a teenager.... and fell in love with the story.... of course....1!!! Then I saw the movie... Magnificent....1!!! BRAVO......!!!!

Great adaption of a great book. One of my favorite book is "Wuthering Heights". It was not possible to portray the entire novel within this short time span of a movie, hence I am not complaining like others that it was different from the book. I think it was a fair adaption of the book portraying the inner turmoils of Cathy and Heathcliff perfectly. Stellar performances by everyone. Especially Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. IMHO..... This is the BEST Wuthering Heights out of all. I was forced to watch this one Sunday evening with my mom when i was a kid instead of Godzilla and boy was I upset. The movie became interesting ten minutes in and enjoyed every minute thereafter. Thank you so much for this one because i couldn't find this version anywhere.

One has to read the book: there is greater depth. It's a love story and a ghost story. Monomania can possess one. The film reaches a great deal; but the book explains everything.
I completely concur. The liberties taken in fashioning a movie from a literary masterwork lose much in the translation. The film is indeed wonderful, yet pales in depth and exploration of the themes inherent in Emily Bronte's writing.
To be honest, I consider this one of the few cases where the movie is simply better than the book. Of course much is edited out, but brevity can be a virtue. The story of Cathy/Catherine and Heathcliffe stands much clearer in the movie than in the book. In the book, it almost drowns in inconsequential detail. I also find it so odd how the book climaxes in the middle and then the final half of it is mostly "what happened after". We should thank Emily Brontë for creating this timeless story and the characters and the setting, and we should thank MacArthur, Hecht, Huston and Wyler for finally telling it well.
Yes several important people are missing & it misses out the second half the decedents of Cathy , Heathcliff etc , the full revenge part & ownership of both of Wuthering Heights & the Grange , the revenge on the children
Oh, some replies in this thread. Get real people. How many hours of a movie could explain and explore EVERYTHING in the BOOK ?? Could be 5 hours movie until we get all complete, but which label will produce that movie? And which audience will spend 5 hours in the cinema to watch the movie in 1939?

This is the love story to beat them all. My favourite love story ever. Tearful and sad, beautiful and touching. Sir Olivier is great, great performances from Cathy and other cast too.

Merle Oberon definitivamente foi a Cathy mais fiel ao livro. Não sabia o quanto ela era boa atriz, está até melhor que Olivier. Ela é obstinada, teimosa e arrogante. Infelizmente o filme, por causa da época, omite muito a real personalidade de Heathcliff, que no filme é muito romântica. Mas é um lindo filme, apesar de omitir a segunda geração, resumiu o fim do livro brilhantemente. Fiquei com vontade de chorar. ♥️

Yes it omits large sections of the novel and skips most of the second half. But with the woeful adaptations that followed (especially that terrible 2012 version), this is still the best.

Laurence Olivier foi e ainda é um dos homens mais lindos que eu já vi. Um rosto muito específico, olhos até femininos em certo ponto, ainda mais tinha um sotaque muito bonito (e olha que eu não gosto do sotaque britânico, mas o dele me parece diferente do de hj 🤷♀️, com um fundo parecendo de línguas que usam mais vogais, como italiano, português, grego...)
Além disso, uma capacidade de atuação/direção que poucos têm e ele só foi reforçando ao longo dos anos, Hamlet e Ricardo III provam isso.

This adaptation is still my favourite, I know a lot of the book isn’t in it , it only covers the first part & some important characters are missing , yet it’s a incredible adaptation of the the first half of the book 📚 love the Brontë novel

The first and best version ever of Withering Heights. Laurence Olivier is just perfect as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Catherine just like Gone with the wind with Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh (who was married to Laurence Olivier). They are classics and should remain as they are since the first version is the best of all.
