    As a Thai, I thought the topic sounds interesting. Your tips are very good and exactly right when fight the traditional Muaythai fighters fight under Kickboxing rules. I am always frustrated seeing some Muaythai fighters fight in Glory without being prepared for it.
    Anyway, I have subscribed your channel and love it!
    Have your great next fight! Good luck.

      Thanks so much.
      It's hard making the transition to another fight sport.
      Muay thai fighters show amazing heart competing without clinch or elbows.
      Nothing but respect for them...ESPECIALLY the ones who start dominating kickboxing (Buakaw, Petch, Simon Marcus, etc).

      will this work under a rule set where both styles are not limited?? the Thai fighter is limited on his tools such as the knees with the thai clinch and elbows.

      For sure. First is stance. Make sure you square up and don't leave your leg open to getting chopped without checking the kick. And while we're on the subject make sure you practice blocking kicks A WHOLE LOT. 😉. Make sure your solid at disengaging from the clinch.
      Now it's your game. Counter kicks with punches. Stall or avoid the clinch. And give them a boxing lesson.
      Very fast, simple, explanation to a very detailed topic. I could make a video on that no problem. I just have to wait until we can get back to the gym.

    I'm not a professional fighter but I do some martial arts ( taekwondo blackbelt, and freestyle wrestling ). I had a friend who was a Muay Thai fighter and I used to train with him. The first thing I found against him was that I need stronger thigh, the first time we fought he just throw his knee into my thigh and I wasn't able to walk properly for a couple days. Then I found If I just want to use taekwondo I will just damage myself because whenever I throw a kick into him he would respond with a damaging low kick into my thigh. The first time I managed to win the fight ( after 5 times ) I did another strategy, I just throw a no power dollyo to distract him to respond me with a counter-attack then I switched to the wrestling guard and I found if I could manage to catch him without getting hit by his elbow or knee wrestling gonna be the king because he had very low stability, and I could use it to throw him out of guard make setup for my spin kicks.
    By the way, your control over kicks is god tier. I don't how that's possible, I start taekwondo at 7 and I am blackbelt since 12 and I can not even think of having that much control.

    • @GabrielVargaOfficial
      @GabrielVargaOfficial  4 роки тому +1

      Haha. Thanks. I've been training since I was about 6 or 7 so I've had lots of time to practice.
      Thigh conditioning is so important. Checkout my video on how I condition my legs. If you don't do it you won't last 3-4 low kicks.

    You are excellent! Why do the trainers not teach these kinds of things??? It would make my life less miserable in those first fights... ;) I lost a fight because I let the opponent clinch me the whole time. I was slow to stop her from coming to me, and she was taller, so I lost, and she dominated in the clinch.

    As a thai boxer, another simple way to get out of a clinch is to put your hands on the back of their head, press their chin into the top of your head and lift your head up as hard as you can, it grinds their chin against your skull and it's a horrible feeling for them

    Without a doubt, Gabriel Varga is among the best and most knowledgeable kickboxers in the world and could probably win over many muay Thai fighters but generally muay thai is superior to kickboxing if clinch elbows and knee are allowed. Common kickboxers cannot win in a fight against the common muaythai fighter. SKILLED kickboxer beats commonly MEDIOCRE muay thai fighters. In other words, train hard ,become a better kickboxer and follow Varga's advice

    Is oblique kick (a strike to opponent's knee) illegal? Cuz im pretty sure, with some good boxing and this strike, you can win.

    • @GZofSparta
      @GZofSparta 4 роки тому +1

      Im asking cuz, I practice boxing, and I use both stances. Then I tried dutch kick boxing. The real problem was the kick checking. They were always hitting my front knee, cuz they couldnt outbox me. Then I learnt to use the side movement, so they couldnt hit me all the time, cuz checking was painful. Switching sides and kicking was pretty effective. Then I used once the oblique strike, and it was pretty hard hitting. I changed to southpaw and hit his front knee with my front right leg. He didnt kick for the rest of the match ,and was losing his balance easily. I know its dangerous but it's effective. Is it illegal?

    kickboxing is a joke change my mind

    • @GabrielVargaOfficial
      @GabrielVargaOfficial  3 роки тому +4

      A joke compared to muay thai? I'm assuming that's what you mean as it's a very reoccurring attitude among muay thai fighters.
      Here's my thoughts. All fight sports are hard. Why call one a joke? Muay thai fighters will win at muay thai but won't beat boxers at boxing, kickboxers at kickboxing or mixed martial artists at MMA. And those 3 disciplines won't defeat a muay thai fighter at their own sport.
      Assuming athletes are elite and have similar skill levels.
      Muay thai fighters tell kickboxers it's not real fighting because there's no clinch or elbows. But remember mixed martial artists could say muay thai isn't real because it's only stand up. And still MMA is just a sport. We aren't fighting for our life so who's to say there isn't someone much scarier when it comes to no rules.
      In the end I say each is hard and if muay thai fighters want to come into kickboxing and then lose don't complain about the rule set. The lack of clinch and elbows was in the contract.
      I respect all disciplines whether they lack legs, elbows or whatever.

    • @marcuscs2484

      @@GabrielVargaOfficial You are correct to assume that that is what I meant. Reguarding grappling, throws such as those in Sanda (I've been training Kung Fu intensively for about 4 months) can be effective, but ground fighting rarely is. In a real fight to defend your life, bringing the fight to the ground can bring all sorts of unpredictable outcomes, and is almost never a smart move, even for a grappler...

      @Omnivorous Here another thing is glove size.... in muay thai its 4oz so one hit does a lot more than in kickboxing 8oz or 10oz.... that's why thai boxers dont throw long complex combos cause they need to conserve energy not for attack, but to be able to take a hit and even defending will hurt like a bitch. I've watch a mauy thai fighter dominate a kick boxer in a kick boxing match but he lost when he got disqualified for kicking the kickboxer while he was falling down after a sweep which I'd allowed in some muay thai rule sets.... but YES IT ALL DEPENDS ON RULES AND CIRCUMSTANCES

    Great tips! About #5, its kinda tricky because the rules of many kickboxing organizations allow for a fair deal of clinching, but I don't think most kickboxers train enough clinching to reflect this. Glory's official rules allows for 5 full seconds, which is basically the same as you get in Rajadamnern(although most Glory refs will break it faster). I often see guys trying to neutralize the clinch over and over while the other guy is getting in a little knee here or there, and even though the strikes might seem really insignificant if a judge is watching that they are going to see one guy doing what he wants to do and the other guy hoping for the ref to help him.

    • @GabrielVargaOfficial
      @GabrielVargaOfficial  5 років тому +1

      It's frustrating that judges aren't consistent with the clinching time and rules.
      I stopped working clinching about 4 years ago.
      Fortunately neutralizing the clinch is much easier than being great at clinch work.
      Everyone should do a little of it because once a muay thai fighter gets ahold of you, you need an answer or they will keep on working the clinch and knees.
      My take on it.

    I completely agree with these tactics. I am a TaeKwonDo practitioner who trains with MT fighters. I was getting murdered up close so I started using the Gracie Ju Jitsu principles of keeping them in tight so you nullify the clinch. They want space to work elbows and knees. take it away (and use your head to push them off centre) and you can, very effectively, neutralise the clinch. I also found that throwing non-Muay Thai techniques was super effective . The thing I've learned watching this video is to avoid middle kicks. While I could sometimes get away with the side kick, turning kicks were caught a few times. I have had success throwing doubles to the middle though. Great vid. Cheers.

      Muay thai fighters are great at muay thai. They'd wreck anyone in the clinch but as you said don't have any training on the ground.
      But every time you change the rules to a sport it's a whole new world.

      These are similar tactics that dutch fighters use against him. The issue is he's so much better than most of them. Or anyone in the world.
      But the tactics work when you get high level dutch fighters like Andy Souwer or Albert Kraus who fought and beat him (although they also lost to him). If I was fighting Buakaw (without the weight class difference) this is exactly what I would use.

    You need to have also a pretty strong leg to defend against their very strong lowkick. If you're a boxing dominant like Gab, you lead leg is always on heavy weight making them very susceptible to lowkicks. You gotta have the grit enough to counter their lowkicks not with checks but with bracing and doing lots of combos after and overwhelm them. Still gotta drill them a lot tho thanks a lot man

    Still Muay Thai is most effective art in the world... usually thai fighter's don't prefer high kick or middle kicks usually we prefer strong low kicks and the distance with the footwork after landing a shots and counter attack, doing sweeps with the fake kick or clinch. The master of the art like saenchai,lerdisila and buakaw will eat you...agree Muay Thai have less techniques but each technique works effectively, fighting under the rules of Muay Thai is harder to fighter of the this because of clinch mind games poking elbows, sometimes the headbutts everything I mean come on man complete stand up striking art with grappling as well as locks.

    If you will be better than Muay Thai You must be brave to use any weapon, punch your feet, knees, elbows or even your head like Burmese boxing You win muay thai just because he misses, yes you win, but if there is a 2, 3, 4 or 5 times, you will lose muay thai because muay thai is the most dangerous. It's not a martial art, it's a real martial art.

      This argument always seems hollow to me.
      Kickboxers tell boxers it's only hands and not real.
      Muay thai tells kickboxing it's only 6 attacks but missing elbows...not real.
      MMA can tell muay thai you're not doing ground work so it's not even close to a real fight.
      😆 NONE of them are real fights. They are all games with rules.
      I know more ground work than muay thai fighters because of my MMA fights. I don't tell muay thai fighters what they are doing isn't real.
      They are all legit but are still just a sport.

    You can't defeat Thai fighters dude. Your best chance is to cut them so the referee steps in and ends the bout. Note that doesn't mean you have defeated them. It only means you got lucky with the rules!
    Here is my take on your tips.
    1- Thais will break your boxing as the bout proceeds and you continue to counter middle-round kicks (roundhouses!) as you do in the video.
    2- A Thai will keep you at the edge with teeps from the second round onwards. Feel free to shadow-boxing combinations and hit the sky!
    3- Crazy techniques you say? I do that sometimes with them. But unlike you (playing smart), I know that I can't carry on with crazy techniques throughout the bout. I know that they will get my tricks sooner or later. A spinning kick will connect only once. Thais will dash and sweep you from the second spinning onwards. Thais don't sweep, not because they're traditional, but because spinning kicks are high-risk high-reward. You also call a super-man punch an unorthodox technique that Thais aren't accustomed to!! Well, the super-man punch originated in Muay Thai. It's called the cobra punch. It was adapted to the super-man punch by westerns. This made it less effective!
    4- Why not throwing roundhouses?! There is something they call escaping the catch and counter. With that, you can do a lot of things. Throwing roundhouses also gets your Thai opponent to think about where to place his.
    5- Nullifying the clinch as you demonstrate it in the video is roughly impossible without getting kneed.
    Altogether, it seems to me that you're selling some Oyama snake-oil (you know what I mean!) in this video. But remember that the last karateka to defeat a Thai was a cheat (spinning kick)!!
