Interesting how she mentioned a high school student's presenting his or her "best self" to college admissions committees. One of the primary problems we have these days with college admissions is we have somehow decided that kids are supposed to BE their best selves between the ages of 14 and 18. No room for late bloomers (or just normal development). No room for adversity (unless you can sell that adversity, which is also kinda messed up). Highly selective colleges and universities, including places like Bates, can pretend that they are being holistic in selecting students all they want, but the vast vast majority of admitted students still check all the regular boxes of what is considered to be achievement and merit.

It'd be difficult, I think. I'd advise focusing less on getting into a "top 40" college and more on developing a wide range of schools, including some you're likely to get into. Here's a guide to help: www.collegeessayguy.com/blog/how-to-choose-a-college

Can you get into a top 40 college with a 1530 sat and a low gpa of 3.15?
