I grew up at 16 yrs old in the Chicago suburbs working at a BMW dealer. My boss liked me and trusted me and let me learn to drive stick on his 88 BMW M5. Also drove an orange 635 CSI with gold bbs wheels, the 850s and 93 M3s new - at 16. Also drove a Shelby replica AC Cobra and a 67 Corvette Stingray convertible. Years later after moving to Los Angeles working for a company I found out my customer was Carroll Shelby and got a private viewing of his collection there. I love cars. I love older BMWs.

That is a stunning E28! I have an E39 as my daily and an E30 that I lusted after for 25 years and I adore both of them. It's getting harder and harder to find these gems (especially with a manual transmission), but I love to see examples like this. You cannot beat older (2004 and older for me) BMW's for classically beautiful styling and a drivng experience that has to be experienced for yourself, you just can't explain to someone how good they are. I love that analog feel when everything is going digital these days. And a crack free dash?!?! That is about as common as a unicorn!

I drove it everywhere all over Germany & sold it for as much as I paid for it. My second BMW was a 94 530i with that same M60 V8 but with an auto & I was in love. It’s great to see these sedans becoming a pinnacle in a subdued racing facet. As an owner of a 1 owner 528e, I can now understand and appreciate the build quality and road drivability it has . Slow, but I like it that way. It has a certain attitude in the way it initially dives into the turns like no other vehicle, ever!
And with the way it absorbs bumps, I feel like it was the best 5grand ever spent on any vehicle purchase I’ve ever made. Btw, 37mpg hwy mileage out of a gas 6 cylinder…hmmm, how come you don’t see that in any modern 6 ?

Absolutely everything you spoke to in your vid is spot on! It is one of the most beautiful vehicles ever made. The 3, 6 and 7 series vehicles from this epic lineup in the 1980’s are also stellar in their styling and build…the e28 somehow always floats to the pinnacle of their styling at this very special moment in time near 40 years ago. I wonder if you like M-B 124s? They are quite lovely as well. Lastly, you have to get these vehicles in euro spec with the shallow set bumpers! Just wicked, the car you spotlighted!

My neighbor owned an 88 M5 when I was in college. Every single time I saw him drive it, I was absolutely transfixed by it mann. Years later, one of my buddies owned an 86 535is that I actually drove and I was hooked. I've been mysteriously drawn to these cars since my graduation from high school wayy back in 1983. A new Buick dealership in Philly had a 79 733i on their lot for sale as a used car trade and I foolishly thought I could convince my Pops into assisting me in buying it and he told me no way. Upkeep & maintenance repairs would be wayy too expensive for me to handle. All the right reasons. Today, I own an 86 M635Csi as part of my small personal collection. I'll never sell it. I still do hope to some day add an E28 5. Thanks again for the great content. #respect

It has a lot of issues now and me and my dad have made it a project car in our garage. But that car had no issues up until 220k miles, and it has over 250k miles on it now. That car handles so perfectly, it really is excellent as a driving machine. BMW not so long ago made real quality cars, that were beautiful, a great combination between tech and analog, and a masterpiece to drive. I miss old BMWs, they really are awesome.

In 1985 when I turned 30 and I finally wasn't "poor", I decided to reward myself with my first new car ever. In fact, I was the first one in my family ever to buy a new car.
I shopped around. I looked at the Nissan Maxima because I love angular almost boxy cars. Two strikes against the Maxima were it was front wheel drive and you could not get a black interior cloth or otherwise.
So I set my sights much more upscale and looked at the Mercedes 500SEC. Another gorgeously styled car. But you could not get it with stick shift.
Then I popped into the BMW dealer to look at a 635i/ iS, but could not order it with stick shift. That's when the dealer said the 535i/iS could be ordered with 5 speed stick.
I told him I really preferred a coupe and was really leaning toward the 500SEC. He said the 535i/iS would blow the doors off the SEC and outperformed the 636i/iS.
But I wasn't sold at that point because I really wanted a coupe. So I temporarily put car buying in the back burner.
Then I discovered there was a brand new 1986 M5 brought in as a "gray market" vehicle. The importer was honest and told me that as a gray market import I could not have it serviced at the BMW dealer and it only had a 12 month warranty. Despite how gorgeous it was in metallic black with buffalo leather interior at a whopping $28,000, I passed because if it were to have broken I felt it might have been too risky to take on and find a mechanic who even knew what that car was. In 1986 barely anyone even knew what a BMW was.
So I went back to the local BMW dealer and ordered a Black 1986 535iS with black interior.
When I told my dad that I ordered a BMW Black/Black. First he said "what is that".
Then he said "why did you order black when there are so many nice color options out there?" I said, "because I like black".
About a month later the dealer called me and said they could deliver the car to my address and being that the dealer was 85 miles away I agreed. I was not home when the car was delivered, but my father was.
So when I got home, he said "that car looks very 'elegant and sporty' in that black".
Then I took him for a ride. He could not believe the rude, handling and overall performance. He became a believer.
That car was like a train in rails. It was one of the first cars that came with the console computer which I did not want because to me it seemed like something more to go wrong. I believe it also was the first year they introduced anti- lock brakes.
Something, I bor anyone u knew was familiar with it believed in.
Six months later during a snowstorm with at least 6" of snow on the side roads with no one around I decided to test this new brake system.
So I accelerated to about 60 mph.
I let go of the steering wheel and jammed in the brakes. The car quickly came to a stop straight as an arrow. Believe it or not I leased that car for 4 years and when it came to the end of the lease, it had a residual value of $12,000. I loved that car and despised the new models that became feminized rounded variants. So I had the dealer convert the residual value to another lease. After 8 years I bought the car for $1.00.
One year later I sold it for $7,000. Unfortunately I did not like the way BMW went in their styling and diminished reliability reputation and have since become a Benz afficiando.
I have since acquired and still have a Black/Black 1990 560SEC after selling my beloved BMW.
    I also gave a mildly modified Black/Black 2006 E55 AMG S211 (Wagon). What a BEAST.
I am sad to say that I just feel that offerings from practically all the car manufacturers including German, are overly complicated and "engineered" and their styling is what I call "goofey" with each manufacturer trying to out-goofey the other. Please bring back simplicity. Even electric car offerings so far seem to be overly complicated and impractical especially in regards to recharge range and recharge speed.

Mike, you have no idea how much you helped to fall in love with the e28. The whole Rusty Slammington story is just gold. Any project of yours I am following closely cause it's just exquisite.
I remember being a kid and lived back in Poland. In the 80's or 90's it was just a dream to own a BMW. Only the mafia guys were having those cars. Crazy times ;) Today I'm on third e28 now and enjoy every minute of it. E24 was also parked in the garage.
Really enjoyed this video. I think you got it just spot on about e28's. Lovely cars.
Keep doing what you doing, you are inspiring so many people. I know it.
    Cheers!!! Zdrowia!!

Beautiful! Became a BMW fan when I was given a ride to lunch in Spring 1994 in San Jose in a 5MT 5-series. In summer 2001, I bought my first BMW, an E46 325i sport wagon. If it had the preferred 5MT instead of StepTronic, I might still be driving it. I’m pretty much of a car nut and currently have 3 cars: a 2007 BMW 335i convertible with 6MT and sport pkg, a 2010 BMW 535i sedan 6MT with sport and a 2018 Tesla Model 3 with MPP sport coil overs. Even in the E9x and E60 generation you could see technology taking over, but these cars still have great driving feel, handling and performance.

I had two E34s and LOVED one more. I had both a 525i manual and a 535i auto - and the 525i manual was by far more enjoyable. Subtle grey/green Delfin exterior and beige interior. Super classy. And the sound of that straight six. Sublime. Before the E34 my boss had an E28 535i which convinced me to go for a 5-series.

I've owned my E28 (1983 533i) since 2004. I've also V8 swapped mine. Im running a Ford 351w and a T5 5 speed. Like this car everything works as it should in mine. Hydro boost steering and power brakes. I also swapped to the Euro headlights and grill. I haven't had the opportunity to swap to the European bumpers yet. I installed e46 M3 front seats (manual with black leather). I'm in the process of installing a big brake upgrade that includes Brembo 18x 6 piston calipers, seven series master cylinder and E34 M5 brakes. I'm running a set of17x8.5 ACS type 2 wheels and the Bilstein sports with H&R sport springs. I drive the car daily in the summer and will continue till I die. I'm 52 at this point and will keep pursuing my version of hot ridding forever lol. The car is always a hit at the local car meets and I generally get a warm response from the local BMW crowd. The domestic hot rod guys love it. I always go park with the Ford guys. Lol. My E28 is and will always be my favorite car to drive. I really enjoyed the video also. Thank you

I've got a modified E28 with an S50 under the hood. It doesn't get much attention or many miles put on the odometer after I picked up a Focus RS as my daily a few years back. I've been considering selling the E28 for a while now, but this video gave my car a reprieve from the chopping block. Great video and motivation to take care of minor annoyances to get my car back to daily driver readiness.

I had a E28 520i, light silver blue metallic and hub caps that were nearly flat, almost like an Group C. It was my winter car, I liked it, but was not sufficient powered. I once drove a 528i which was much better. We also salvaged some 525eta just for the motor parts.

Elegant and understated are the perfect words. I've wanted an E28 for a very long time, came very close to buying one about a decade ago, had cash in hand at the asking price but the guy couldn't bring himself to let it go. Maybe in the future I'll get another chance. Jeremy has done a great job with this build, aside from the engine swap it's a lot of the same vision I had for the one I'd like. Thanks for the video!

Oh, an 16 year old BMW E28 528i in late 1990s was the first car I drove for a few months after getting drivers permit. It had issues (mostly electric, but was fine most of the time), so my step dad was selling it, but while it was not sold, it was given to me, so it would not take up paid parking space. 😆 So... it's a nostalgic one for me. Being a new driver I did not push it hard, yet having that power available felt nice. I mean, it had a bit more power, than my current family station wagon (184 vs 177), while BMW was several hundreds of kilos lighter.

I own an E39 with the M62 and a manual transmission and I would trade it and a vital organ for a V8 E28. This car though is on a whole different level. Cars like this are going to be so rare and desirable in the future that they will become untouchable for us mere enthusiasts.
