ASOIAF Theories: Daenerys and the Ancient Ritual

- The birth of Dany's dragons appears to be miraculous. She burns Drogo’s body along with her petrified dragon eggs in a pyre. The maegi, Mirri Maz Durr, is also bound to the pyre as punishment for tricking Daenerys into sacrificing the life of her child. When the fire dies down after Daenerys too has walked into the flames, the sky becomes alive with the voices of dragons for the first time in over a century.
A closer look at the text reveals that this event was not miraculous, this was actually a precise ritual. To understand this all we have to go back to the beginning. All the way back to Illyrio Mopatis, he gifted Daenerys the stone dragons eggs, but where did he get them from?

It would also be interesting to compare it to the ritual at Summerhall and with Euron in the Forsaken chapter. It shows the price of powerfull blood magic. All involve a lover, the child of the one attempting the ritual and a holy/religious person.
Piekenier I think euron wants dragons to sacrifice
Euron is said to have trown a dragon egg into the sea, maybe it is at that location where he is performing his ritual? He has a lover pregnant with his child and countless holy people strapped to his ships waiting to be sacrificed for some powerfull display of magic. Maybe to summon a storm, maybe to summon a kraken. He is about to do battle so it is probably related to giving him the ability to easilly win it.
Piekenier I think krakens are dragon weirwoods that live under the sea with the weirwood roots also if you watch LML he notes that green seer sounds. Like green sea so under the sea means weirwood net
Piekenier I think Euron wants to hatch his dragon egg. We know he's desperate in the books to gain control over Danyerys dragons and has the horn "dragon binder" that he's experimenting with. have a great weekend!
Piekenier holy SHIT. that girl Euron got pregnant... fuck it makes sense
There's a line when they're building the pyre that when first reading it got me thinking along similar lines of an outside force in control of Dany. Cant remember the exact quote, but i remember it as:
"BRING MY EGGS"
Something in her voice made the handmaiden scared
Or something like that.
I think GRRM has often shown his characters influenced by genetic memories(as some real species of birds, insects, fish & even mammals are). The Starks & Targs hv ancient roots. Though written histories are distorted by the opinions & prejudices of the authors (many recopying old text wanted to give a more scientific explanation to ancient histories they felt were heavily influenced by superstitious beliefs), it's very clear their early ancestors were closer to nature & the various species that flourished in their era(Children of the Forest, etc...). What was lost from conscious memories emerges vividly in dream-states, visions, etc. GRRM leaves it to the reader to decide how much is natural & how much is mystical. We know now that Others(White Walkers) were created through magic so perhaps this + their long hibernation cycles make it impossible for them to evolve, change & grow as a society. Maybe they can only repeat their origin story(born in war to destroy mankind but bound by blood to a treaty mankind has long forgotten & broken). In the end, GRRM may conclude ASOIF isn't about these characters as much as it is a tale of recycling destiny that won't be broken.
Terrific video as always, though I always saw it a little differently; Mirri studied under Marwyn the Mage, who is known for his fringe theories at the Citadel. We know he's interested in magic, which the Maesters reject, so it would be fair to assume that he'd be interested in dragons as well if what Barbary Dustin said about the Maesters killing them off was true. I'm of the mindset that Mirri was sent to the Lazhareen (some rando witch who happens to know Marwyn and also speak the common tongue?) specifically to hatch the eggs. Perhaps the method was as you said, working through Dany, either way she is described as ululating loudly as she burns, and she was said to have studied with people called "spell singers". It wouldn't surprise me if Marwyn, when he arrives at Meereen, reveals all of this and either teams up with Dany or starts playing her in some way
I always thought that while Daenerys wanted to use the pyre to hatch her dragons, she wasn't planning on to walk into the pyre herself.
The event seemed to be more like spur of the moment, a moment of fanatic Targaryen extacy for Dany to "embrace" the fire and her children that were born. Nothing in Dany's own narrative tells that she preplanned walking in and surviving the pyre. She even confesses at the start of the pyre how she wants to do what Jorah feared, to climb in and stay with Drogo until their bones and flesh melt into one
Wonderful reading voice as always sir.
Bright Glory now he's even better because of his improved command of setting the scenery
oh absolutely Quinn is the best reader
This is my MOST FAVORITE video explaining Danny and her dragons!
I agree I don't think daenarys knew exactly what she was doing somewhere in her subconscious the gods were whispering
Awesome way to start the day. Thanks
Tehn right! Listening to this with my morning coffee.
ThotKilla
What the hell is wrong with you?
I imagined Danny saying omae wa mou shinderu to mirri mazdur when she said you will not hear me scream
Nani?
*mirris head explodes
roses are red
violets are blue
omae wa mou
shin deiru
Great theory! I literally never thought about the possibility that someone else could've given Dany dragon's eggs, but that makes so much more sense.
With the recent book Fire and Blood i now think the eggs came from dragonstone. During the reign of king jaeheris dragons were being hatched on dragonstone and three of those eggs were stolen and taken to essos. Jaeheris searched for those eggs even offering large rewards for the eggs and threats that should rumours of dragon eggs hatching in essos stirr, he'd return with armies and dragons, but everyone in essos simply said they didnt know where the eggs where. I think dannys eggs were these three eggs and in George's writting style this would be more than fitting. Why else would he describe the theft of three eggs from dragon stone in the new book about the history of the targeryans? It would close the circle. The lost targeryan eggs return to the hands of a targeryan 200 years later
She also burned gnarled wood. I think gnarled wood is weirwood. Most Asoiaf references make it seem that way to me. ;-)
I've always wondered if maybe the dragon eggs were the same ones used at summerhall
Your Daenerys videos are always my favorite!
I don’t think he was trying to murder Dany, there would have been a million other ways for him to kill her than marrying her to one of the most powerful and dangerous person on earth
This was superlative Stuff today... Thanks... Very nice observations about placement of eggs and the way Everything was done perfectly by Dany with some intrinsic understanding not conveyed at the surface of mind where readers exist in the PoV. Some deeper layer left unaccessed for readers. :-) nice George ;-)
You are the most gifted narrator /story teller, it really enriches all your work! I wish an audiobooks company would re-release ASOIF with Quinn as narrator. Thanks love QOT.🌹 😊
I think magic in the ice fire follows the equivalent exchange egg and his family souls weren't as valuable as daenerys her son and Kal drogo
Emilio Camacho Erice i don't know about that but i do think under circumstance this ritual payed off
"his family souls" who?
Veritas et Aequitas egg children
Egg, as in Aegon, "young Griff"?
Veritas et Aequitas egg as in the guy who goes with duncan
I think the eggs came from Elissa when she sold the 3 eggs like you said in your video about Elissa
that was beautiful Quinn...keep them coming
Just found your channel and love your videos - am working my way through the ASoIaF videos. Thank you!
Oh, also I really like the way you're doing your videos now! You're really getting us hype (better than HBO)! Good job!
This explains why Illyrio gave Dany the petrified dragon eggs instead of FAegon. It would've made more sense for him to give them to FAegon to use as a symbol of his Targ heritage.
Dany did the same ritual Mirri did. She paid for the life of the dragons with Mirri’s life. I think she knew what she was doing to some extent, Targaryens are innately connected to blood and fire magic.
I wonder if is it just a coincidence in the first picture that illryo was holding the eggs of Drogon and Rhegal since they were the ones that survived later on...
Nice vid. I hope George knows why she did what she did, 😂 Not being sarcastic at all: GRRM could toss it in with Dany following Drogo's customs (which Illyrio would know before arranging the marriage), and something cornier like "true love" (Dany/Drogo) igniting Dany's "dragon blood" in her quest to save Drogo, which led to MMD's blood magic ritual, which led to Dany's "awakening"/eggs warming up [to Dany]. Not sure Quaithe was directing those dreams in AGOT; I think that was something specific to Dany pushing MMD to save Khal Drogo (and maybe FriendZone was always meant to carry Dany into the tent, too. A hero-type role for him? But if Dany hadn't loved Drogo so much, none of that would have happened: that's GOT to be Dany-specific imo. (Show will BLOW it; GRRM gotta get those books out!)
Brilliant narration and editing. I can't believe you only have 80k sub
My left ear loved this video quinn
Is it possible that dragons can warg into humans?
No.
That would explain the Targaryen's genetic madness lol
@@unknownuser5955 I think their love of incest explains that xD.
Seriously the best stuff on UA-cam right now
what are the links for the two videos you did explaining the birth of dragons 🐉?

Part 2: ua-cam.com/video/M-tl2rDhrDc/v-deo.html
One thing that I can't see having been mentioned either in the video or comments is the power of Kingsblood. Drogo surely possesses it as Khal; if it exists?
Gil A from dany* and No. The dragons arnt geneticly connected to dany
2:13 who is that dude with Dani? Looking like a mechanic ...
You have a mysterious and wonderful voice for a reader ..i like it....This book scene with Danny performing that ritual ..proves that she is the Azor Ahai reborn ..reborn admist smoke [Drogos funeral pyre]and salt [the tears of his bloodriders]..Also the Red Comet is another proof of this...Is the Bleeding Star in the AA myth ..In S2 The comet appears in the scenes of Danny[Azor Ahai],of Jon [Lightbringer],of Mellisandre[Nissa Nissa] and of Bran[the Night King] proves that those 4 persons are going to be the most important in the great war to comes. Also in the books Danny and Jon have both Azor Ahai dreams..Danny dreamed that she fights/flies and burns Roberts armies in the Trident ..whose there look like like the Army of the Dead with her magical ''sword''Drogon[your Dragons are flaming swords..Xharo Xoan Daxos]... wearing also Rhaegars ruby armor and Jon dreams that he fights them with his burning Longclaw in the Wall after has killing Ygritte as nissa nissa [Mell is actually the reincarnation of Ygritte ,she repeats the same words in S5 to him]..He and she have both their role to play in S8 and in the Dream Of Spring ..maybe both are Azor[Jon] Ahai [Danny] or as i said before Danny is AA and Jon is the Lightbringer ..the one that will fight for her the WW and will end the Long Night.
What the fuck have you just said lol?? About the prophecy of azor ahai heed the wise words of archmaester marwyn..
I don't think Drogo gave a shit about being honor bound to anything.
You're assuming she was following an established ritual and not just making it up herself. We have no indication that this is the case. Shiera may very well be Quaithe, but I have always subscribed to the notion that Ashara is Quaithe. After all, Ashara was a student of Shiera. As for where Ilyrio got the dragon eggs, I have always assumed that they came from the Red Keep and that he was lying. I'm guessing that Varys gave him the eggs to give to Daenerys. If Quaithe had given him the eggs there is no reason for him to actually pass them on. And also why couldn't Quaithe have given Dany the eggs herself. There was nothing we know of preventing her from doing so. As to why Varys wanted Dany to have the eggs I think it was always part of the plan that Dany would eventually marry young Griff. They were going to insure that Drogo and Viserys were taken care of first. I agree with you that Quaithe has been aiding Dany all along and might very well have been helping her with the ritual too. But I think Bridge4 in his videos makes a good point, that the magic Dany has comes from her own determination.
I love your voice. So perfect. Great video. As always.
I never miss your videos! thank you so much!!
I may skip Danys chapters but I don’t skip her Quinn’s Ideas videos
a great treat for the day......thanks for ur work
Spot on, excellent video
Eeeh. New Icon. Liking the fire approach
Can you pleeeease read the whole book series? It'd be epic!
yeah it would
I've always thought that the burning of Mirri and the fact that dragons (fire made flesh) hatched as she was in the flames is what protected her from being burned. Fire cannot kill a dragon!
Rachel Popa except it can. See Valyria
Awesome stuff dude
As always the text bears out things that were never said in the show. She knew she would not burn-I swear it. U don't miss a thing!
I don't know why, but I like your voice more in Dune videos.
Nice video, thank you!
Woo hoo I like you, been watching your videos and you are so on point with all of them. Keep it going brother.
Have you ever read or considered doing videos on any Brandon Sanderson books?
You are mistaken, they did not intend to murder either Daenerys or viserys, they just assumed that due to her Frailty would die.
When she was dead kall Drogo will be honor-bound to return with viserys and his hundred thousand Screamers to fight for Faegon
So this doesn't have to do with this video, but I'm trying to figure out who the unnamed faceless men are. Any ideas on the fat Lord? Illyrio kind of reminded me of it
Emerson Nashman but illyrio has a face
Good video
So do u think the glass candles were burning before the birth of Danny’s dragons?
Aaron Slade before the comet*
is it mag "G" or "I". love your vids man
Awesome stuff.
Do you have a podcast?
Seems too farfetched that quiathe met illerio
8:50 The Hills Alive explains the same exact theory about Mary Magdore being necessary for the ritual to bring the dragons to life in her video "Danerys Always Chose Violence."
It talks about the incredible brutality of Daenarys' decision to burn her slave alive with no proof that she had actually committed any crimes.
And it introduces the even more disturbing idea that she burned Mari alive because she needed to use her in the ritual.
Right, because the witch didn't kill dany's child?
Mirri literally admitted to killing Rhaego saying he was the Stallion that Mounts the world. So what is she talking about 😂
Mirri is a fool because she underestimated Dany. She basically gave her the clue of how to hatch the eggs, "Only death can pay for life."
