As long as the Acorn Projects are in Oakland, it'll never be totally gentrified. Small parts have been gentrified but the people that left West Oakland didn't move into tents. They moved to Antioch, Stocken, etc. But don't worry, East Oakland will always be East Oakland
I could not disagree more . There's literally people living in tents in the shadows of there old homes . There's a reason why tent cities are popping up more and more . It's not a figment of your imagination . Some may have moved to antioch but not all. Gentrification caused alot of homelessness as well. And just because the acorn projects are there that's good enough ? So all the black folks only in get to live in projects ? What a disgrace of a comment . Totally misguided and ignorant . Your part of the problem big dog you disgust me .
@@i_overstand5102 , , so what is your solution to gentrification? If people have money and want, or are willing to move to a certain area, that’s their prerogative. They aren’t strong arming anybody out of their homes. A person who decides they are willing to pay high rent, do you blame the person for being willing to pay that amount or the owner for asking that much for rent? So your solution is, let’s keep Oakland poor. Let’s keep everything low income. So for people that are more well off, where do you want them to live? In tents? Far away? You disgust me with your “give me hand outs” mentality, instead of working hard and earning a living. yes, the reality is that a lot of people don't understand what gentrification means. the people at the oakland/lake merritt cookout didn't even seem to realize that oakland has already been gentrified. this process started in the early 90s and is completed now. in other words, the process cannot be stopped and has already affected the majority of poor former residents. this is a statewide problem.
@Sergio Aguirre For me the focus should be on programs that can help to reduce the homeless population. Many homeless people are probably drug addicts. So have a program that deals with drug addiction.
I talk to many of the homeless in West Oakland on a daily basis - and more than 50% of them in West Oakland appear to be from West Oakland. Often they are previously incarcerated people who due to probation restrictions they need to live in a specific county and as West Oakland is where they know people, and was their neighborhood, it is where they often stay. And I know several of the older homeless people in my neighborhood that are the last remaining people in their family and they lost their homes due to predatory lending - which was very much created by the motivation of gentrification As far as I can tell the "traveling" homeless in West Oakland have RVs and it is one of the few places in the Bay Area where they can park and be relatively not-harrassed. So your blanket statement just does not work here.
I am sure regulations and fines were created against banks because everything they were doing was on the up and up. No coercion, misrepresentation, exploitative or unscrupulous actions on the lenders part. Yep, it was totally the fault of the borrowers. You are a piece of work.
The banks did not lend rope. This happened like this en masse as this one point in history due to bad practices on the banks' part. The bank played the con-man here, but by the time it was figured out millions of people lost their homes. Which, whether you like it or not, these predatory loans intentionally targeted people of color, elderly, and low-income folks and this has contributed to the homeless issues in the Bay Area. But since you are perfect and holier than though, maybe you can find a solution that is not "make them invisible" which is pretty clear what you would prefer.
If you think there is a foreclosure problem in west Oakland you don’t understand the problem. The only ones being foreclosed on are landlords who were prevented from collecting rental income or evicting delinquent tenants. Most of those landlords recouped their loss by taking out loans against the property that they immediately defaulted on. Probably a lot of those people formed LLC’s and bought back their properties from the bank at a discount and without the burden of an existing lease agreement. A great example of someone who does this Paul Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi’s husband.

At the very minimum 1500$ for 1 bedroom. I use to live in low income housing project then somebody bought the building and jacked up the price nobody could afford and had to move out smh
It's not gentrification that's changing Oakland. It happened 25 yrs ago when silicon valley was in full swing. Family properties that had been owned for generations, came in and pushing real estate boon. Those people blew their money not purchasing anywhere to live. Thus becoming homeless.

As a native born Californian that grew up in the bay area [born and raised in Richmond] and lived in the Lake Merritt area in the 90s we saw this coming then. We simply pursued higher education to further insulate ourselves from being priced out despite the gentrification movement or should I say ethnic cleansing? My question to these UC Berkeley students doing this video. How come you didn't include the impact illegal aliens play in all of this? Sure we can lay "some" of the blame on toxic capitalism but what about liberal politics as well? Your appraisal of this issue is incomplete.
Conservative politics aided gentrification on the national level, liberal politics on the local and state level. Look at who the developers donate to. As far as illegal immigrants how many of them can afford oakland these days? Look at fruitvale, that's been colonized as well. That had a huge illegal population. They are victims in this as well. I think ignoring capitalism as the cause of gentrification is naive
Liam What is your problem with gentrification anyway? As far as I see it, its the way the world works. A place becomes desirable to live in for whatever reason and prices go up. Tell me a place where that doesn't happen.

East Oakland is definitely not gentrified
So how much of the homeless problem is caused by gentrification?
@Sergio Aguirre
Does the state have approaches that have reduced its homeless population?

Neighborhoods change, gentrification raises property balurs snd decreases crime sad but true
How much does the apartment complex cost per month. That information would help.
