I’ve done research on that. The Beatles on occasions were high when they wrote music. But the next day, they realized that what they’d written was trash. So, they re-wrote them while being sober. That’s when they recorded their songs.
I was around 15 when I bought a little book of John Lennon’s entitled “In His Own Write,” must’ve been like 1965, probably written when he was late teens, really early. Snippets of prose and poetry and little sketches, so much of it just playing with the language, such as: “I was bored in Liddypool in (pun on some date) 1940 when we were getting pounded by the Nasties, led by Madolf Heatlump (who only had one…)”, is a fragment I recall after 50+ years. It’s brilliant: Nasties = Nazis (of course) Madolf = Adolf (can you make a pun on Hitler’s name more full of meaning than that?) Heatlump (who only had one) = Hitler (This takes explanation. It refers to the wartime rumor that Hitler had had one of his balls shot off in WWI. So, Hitler had only one “Heatlump,” and balls can, yeah, be thought of as “Heatlumps” in times of extreme horniness). Whether high when Come Together was written (oh please), still, as a recovering English major, I have no doubt that it comes out of Lennon’s love of playing with the language. It started long before the song and probably before the Beatles (which is also a pun).
