I just realized that you guys said in the vehicle GSR episode you'd talk about vehicle creation using the monster creation rules in the monster creation video! This item creation reminded me, give the gobbos a vehicle creation video! That being said, good episode this time around!
I can't remember where I read it but, if you give a player an item that's a level over what they're supposed to have, it only really affects them for one or two levels. After that, it's not quite as good as other items they can get (unless they're able to do stuff with runes)
The crafting rules of Pathfinder 2E are...making me want to not play somebody well versed in crafting. It all comes down to the costs you need to pay to create an item. Normally, you are better off just plain buying it instead of crafting it. You could earn more money by 'Earn an income' than by saving money because you craft it youself. I am also wondering whether you have been to Germany (Robert), as the mug in front of you prominently displays the label of a famous german beer (although it clearly has no beer in it). Last but not least, here is one of my magical items. The Mask of the Builder It was created by my dwarven wizard as part of his initiation at the Magaambya. He is well versed in crafting and redecorated his chamber at the dorm. You know..those ceilings are much too high for a dwarf and could use an inserted floor to store all those tables with experiments and work benches. To be more efficient at redecoration, he first developed a cantrip 'Assembly' which lets him shrink self-crafted items for 2-3% for 10 seconds. This way he could more accurately and quickly assemble parts of a construction. (For example the beam in the corner is exactly the height of the room and would be difficult to place tightly in its location -> shrink it for some seconds, place it and it is very firm in its position.) At the time the students should design their own mask, he integrated this cantrip into the mask. Overall it grants a bonus of +1 to crafting. Basically the Mask of the Builder is a variation of the Hat of the Mage (granting a +1 bonus to a skill and a cantrip) and costs the same.
The crafting rules are designed that way to prevent abusing them in organized play, but yeah I tend to agree. I get why they did it from a balance perspective but it's not a super fun system that feels worthwhile. For home play it's pretty common to make it more easily approachable and reduce cost further, at least a bunch of games I've participated in and the games I personally GM reduce crafting cost to be more rewarding.
not a real effort because everything TTRPG has been put on hold for xmas/ moving (life is funnnnnn) but i want roots that last of us fuse with you and make you undead like, eating bits ya soul or body in return for strength. doomed 1 for quickened maybe? napkin math. every time you kill a creature, it goes down. but does not go down any other way?
you mentioned custom items to make a PC pass the sniff test... i remember Derik from KOLC talking about this, he would often use feats? to make your character DIFFERENT from what someone to theory craft in pathbuilder, give you scars, -1 to perception, +1 to indimation, there is, for me. no point in this hyper balanced system if we dont take advantage of the EASE we can FLEX against those constraints. and ofc, lessons can be learned from our 5e brothers, add time limits, make anything truly BROKEN, a consumamble. make it so it CANT be sold, if your having issues with how to balance it... just DONT. and PLAN for it being unbalalanced. this isnt necesarily the best idea for survivable or no drawback items, you need to make sure you dont give the infinite fireballs at 10th rank to rhe wizard because why would his lv 5 ass ever cast a spell again? you have just invalidated his whole character. BUT, make it so you get STUPIFIED every time you use it, for a minute. to a value that stacks? OOOOO now we have left the "objective best choice" territory and entered "damm..... should i pull *the* wand out guys....?" zone. this is FUN. and if you dont wanna make it balanced, you WANT the item to FEEL unbalanced mechanically, give it LORE implications, how does the church of pharasma feel bout ur use of the wand of infinite summmon undead? and the biggest and most importan lesson to learn is. NOTHING is final, you can explain it away with story, or just TELL the players any time, but your item that was fair and reasonable but ISNT? just de power it. tune it down, its not GREAT, but if ur open and honest about why "hey im a rookie designer, i dont get paid enough for this" they as chill, non toxic players will be fair and reasonable and probs agree XD
