I love how he says “I’m shedding skin” which is a callback to Lucifer transforming into a snake or a dragon. I also love how he says in the second verse. “ angel straight from heaven.” both showing off his foreshadowing to being Lucifer
John Lee Hooker only lived in Detroit for five years from '43 to '48, and was never a record executive. He lived from 1917 to 2001, which means his life overlaps Billie Holiday. Who was born in 1915 and died in 1959. Getting kicked out of the house by their "father" represents getting kicked out of the house of God. Which he just straight up tells you in the third part. People aren't looking at the last verse and connecting it to the first two, that's the problem. The song is a parable, the people mentioned in the song represent the unnamed Black artists that have consistently perished for the entertainment of yt people. The very last line tells you everything: "I rewrote the devil's story just to take our power back, 'carnated" The story of the Lucifer (aka the devil) is a parable, just like this song.
@@markusc9417Dinah Washington didn't die of brown sugar, she died of diet pills overdose. Billie Holiday was a notorious heavy brown sugar user, there's documentaries out there where her peers from ber generation confirm it. Her death was listed as heart and liver failure, but at 44 years old you just don't suddenly die of those for no reason, and considering that it was reported that after her death they had found brown sugar hidden in her hospital room, it's safe to assume that that's what ultimately killed her and that she was using up to the very end right under her doctor's nose. And to top it all off, she was a constant presence at the Chitlin' Circuit. Her story checks out better with Kendrick's lyrics than Washington's.
Just because Hooker's and Holiday's lives overlapped it doesn't mean that the devil wasn't moving from body to body while the artists were still alive. Those are clearly just two examples of many.
If Kendrick ever take his writing talent to do a series it’ll make all others just be a memory. Kendrick if ur reading this. get Ghost from Power & show 50 how it’s some. This man is a genius.
Hmm 🤔 You did a really great job explaining “Reincarnated” interspersed with actual stories and events to support the lyrics. I’m impressed ❤ Very well done!
Very well done, I hope the breakdown helps ppl understand what the song is really about instead of the surface level,.. And that it's not Dina Washington, but Billie Holiday!! Again, well done!! 🔥
the line "I didn't gloat, even told 'em, 'No' When the vultures came" also refers to Kanye and ty$ reaching out for a Kendrick verse on the vultures album after already beating drake, kendrick turned them down
No cap, I didn’t know the first set of artists from his beginning verses, wanted to know that, so thanks for your analysis of the song, deep dive got em.
I enjoy the history that you're saying, but either talk louder into the mic or turn the music down because it's really hard to understand the info that you're given
@@r.awilson7402I tried. I tried listening to it multiple times and I still only get half of what he's saying. Which is weird cause I can hear Reincarnated clearly. Maybe, I'll watch this video again when I have an equalizer extension for UA-cam
@r.wilson7402 I heard what he was saying it was just unnecessary music playing while he's talking low I work around loud vehicles and know how to talk and listen around loud scenarios I just feel like it was unnecessary
John Lee Hooker was from Mississippi, near Clarksdale, Mississippi. "Most talented where I'm from, but I had the rebel" could be his birthplace down south.
@cappykuntz1302 No. Having 'the rebel' equates to a rebellious spirit, not following rules etc. The Ole Miss Rebels were Confederate soldiers of the Civil War who fought to keep Black people enslaved in Mississippi and the other States that seceded from the Union.
I didn’t think I could like this song even more until you broke it down. I completely understand where Kendrick is coming from in this song. I appreciate the break down.
My favorite song on the album. If you haven't already seen "The US vs. Billie Holiday," check it out. She has an assistant who spoke Italian and always supported her.
The second verse was NOT about Billie Holiday, it was about Dinah Washington (lengendary jazz singer). Billie (although an addict) did NOT die of an overdose, Dinah did.
@Theemultidimensionalgoddess Shiiitttt, I done subbed just to be on top of every time he drops a new video; until brodie shows his face, I'm on his head! Ya heard! lol 😄
I read the first vignette as not about anyone in particular but more of a kind of composite myth Kendrick made up that incorporated a lot of stories. There is a bit of Robert Johnson and a bit of Hendrix in there, perhaps. But then the character winds up having influence at a record company. So no one historical figure completely fits.
@rockymcgee1 in looking at Dinah Washington died of lethal combination of secobarbital and amobarbital, prescriptions for her insomnia and diet, which contributed to her death. Other qualudes Methaqualone overdose resembles barbiturate poisoning, but with increased motor difficulties and a lower incidence of cardiac or respiratory depression.
While this is a nice take on musical history, it has a lot of biblical inaccuracies; and relies heavily on religious doctrine rather than what is actually told in the Bible.
He's not depicting a specific person it’s a reflection on multiple iconic artists who faced similar fates. Often caused by addiction, social pressure and tragic endings linked to personal demons or struggles. Billie makes sense because she redefined jazz, much like the revolutionary artist he embodies in this verse and plus the tragic cycles Kendrick highlights align with her story, but it’s not just her.
@@Yeab_m it does depict a specific person when all the facts check out. Dinah Washington died of diet pills overdose and she wasn't know to do hard stuff, Billie Holiday on the other hand was notoriously addicted to brown sugar, they literally found some hidden in her hospital room after she died, Google it. And she was a constant presence at the Chitlin' Circuit. Wasn't Dinah Washington.. It's documented that Billy holiday died in the hospital due to heroine overdose days before she was reported to be taking into custody.. Police there said they found a needle in her arm that wasn't done by medical nurses
@@NatchezIndian Billie died from heart failure after years of drug use. Dinah literally died of an overdose. It’s Dinah. Billie is obvious anyways. Too obvious for Kendrick Lamar.
Dude totally misses the point of the motif being kicked out of the house. Its drawing a line between the artists and the devil and represents a similar fall from grace and departure from standard path.
Did Kendrick vow to not keep coming back and choosing war😂😂,is that why he said the more he says that the more his word is diminished meaning the more he says he wants peace and keeps choosing war the less people will believe him?
Excellent Presentation.Kendrick Lamar represents an example and a very serious challenge to mainstream hip hop artists. The mis-use of God's gifts and talents, in this context, is defined as ingratitude... Promoting self--destructive ideas that serve no good purpose for anyone, but the artists who's determined to continue to be an agent of destruction, rather than an agent of change. Those who prosper from such degenerate expression in hip hop music are willing particpants in feeding the status quo.A destructive mindset tend to lead to destructive ends.
