FJ Cruiser Rear Door Mod

- Car camping is more fun when you can actually exit your vehicle.... an FJ doesn't have a push-button unlocking mechanism on the rear door. So this video breaks down my process when I added one. I got this idea from the FJ Cruiser Forums.
Very nice video. Guy on the fj Cruiser form makes a complete kit no drilling holes. Has a push slide button that mounts in existing square in door panel. Also comes with a handle which allows you to pull door back shut. I sells lots of these. I can’t remember the price everything less than $50 bucks and it all looks factory. Choose your own colors also.

I like that idea!
Do you happen to have a link? Thanks
Who would down-vote such a great DIY video?! Thanks for sharing!
People who appreciate informative videos with actual component names and those who don't prefer profanity. Thanks for your service.
Apparently only those that can criticize instead of those that can do .
That goo is called urethane. That "connector" is called a cable clamp. I would go a step further and run a 1/4" X 32 die down the rod a bit, and then screw on a side door lock button from an older car from the '70s or '80s. They can be purchase in the Motormite/Dorman "Help" section of your local auto parts store for coffee money.
I know this is over a year old! Due to lockdown, I just completed this! Thanks! Works awesome!👍🏼
Curious to know if you had the same problem as myself or not and if this would open and close my back door as well.
Great mod. I did something similar in my Astro Van. The outside rear door latch was the only way to open the door and handle was made out of pot metal. So if it snapped, which the do often, You can't open the doors. You have to ake the rear seat out and the panels to get it open and replace the handle. After the second time I got fed up and did something exactly like this but used stainless steel fishing lead instead. Used some string to pull it through the hole and attached a keyring to the end.
I completed mine today. Yesterday the rear door would not open so I had to go back in to see what was the problem. It turns out that there is a piece of styrofoam in the door panel that the rod has to go around/through. I did cut away a good portion (I thought) before. But the rod was pushed up against it when I reinstalled the door panel so I cut away more of the styrofoam and now it works great. Fabulous.
Clever lever! Nice job!
ThanX for a super explanation along with the video....I can see the need in fastening the plastic while making the install.
I use a zip tie and hope that works for awhile then if it needs to be fixed I will diffently go this route.
Thank you so much i fexed my car after your video 👍👍
Well done... You made it very easy.
Great fix . Thanks for posting !
I'm gonna try and build this this weekend
While at it, might want to add a small-pull cord to be able to open the rear window from the inside.
I don't see why not! :)
(old reply I know) The rear window is electronically actuated and not mechanical like this door latch. People are using a simple momentary switch these days patched into the factory harness.
Great vid. Im wondering if a flexible steel cable with a loop on the end wouldnt be easier and just as effective. Drill through the plastic on top while its still connected, this will mark where you have to drill the steel. Take panel off, drill steel, connect flexible cable to the rod with same clamp, reinstall cover, lastly make loop with a crimp and pliers. What do you think?
Sounds like a great idea! 👍
Thanks for sharing..
When I have to redo mine I'm going to do it this way.
Thanks for the vid. Why not just drill the hole in the panel directly above where you plan to mount the rod? Is there something in the way that forced you to shape the rod the way you did?
I'd have to revisit the build. I want to say there was a lot in the way that made me have to curve the rod. Once I opened it it made more sense.
My door just sticks.... this mod was perfect with adding a switch for the window
I love the easy mods. Whatever makes life easier!
Greetings,my fj cruiser does not want to open the back door with nothing does not respond, is there any solution for that?
The back window or door? The back door can certainly get stuck after installing the release. Just make sure everything moves smoothly otherwise it will stay stuck in lock or open. Slamming the door a bit harder helps too to make sure it latches too.
Does this allow the door to be opened or just unlock it?
Just unlock. You'll have to push the door open from the inside (or outside I suppose)
Locked or latched...
Why do you sleep inside the FJ? Tents are easy to set up, if you practice a bunch
Good question. For some reason I sleep like garbage in a tent. Not sure why. When I started sleeping in the FJ It just got more fun. :)
Do you trust that everywhere? What about with a dog on a 2000 mile trip. I use too sleep in a tent cott till a bunch of drunken guys came and effed with it. That's enough for me when your not in a camping spot.
A lot of places don't allow camping in Australia unless you're in a pay for camping area, paying the government at every turn. I like to pull up and just be able to live out of the back of my car inconspicuosly and then just drive away in the morning, whether that be on the beach in or in the bush. The world is F'd now, governents trying to control all of us and taking all our freedoms away.
I LOVE sleeping in my FJ! No need to fuss with setting up a tent that gets grimy and damp- and when I wake up, just head out for the next spot. Quick and easy!
Tents are not bear proof. I prefer to sleep on the roof with yoga mat, watching the stars. Need to live another day.
