Labelle, "Moon Shadow" (1972)

- Everyone gets stuck on "Lady Marmalade" or, better yet "What Can You Do For Me" (if you're a little deeper/garage/loft-minded). But this is my personal favorite from the Labelle catalog. So much so that my number one girl, beloved Bat Terrier, Luna Shadowfax bears the same name. Ya know, you really shouldn't touch iconic songs unless you plan on crushing your cover, and, well, Nona, Patti and Sarah did just that. Bonus points for the amazing album photo.
Patti had me when she said, if you lost your leg and couldn't do the Breakdown no more!!! You young folks don't know nothin, bout that!!!!
Please explain.
@@movieman203 The Breakdown was a very popular dance. Made more popular by Rufus Thomas, you can find that on You Tube. As seasoned as I am, I remember and still can do the Breakdown!!!!
I'll keep it short...the most phenomenal female group to hit the planet!!!
Love the harmony!!!! All of them are lead singers!!!! Nona a great songwriter!!!
this is my favorite of every one of Patti's song's, i was 23 years old ,with 2 young son's and they liked to see me get so happy ,so they would start dancing with me . i'm telling you, those were some good fun times .Sing it Patti, rock the house.
My favorite song by LaBelle saw them do it in Central Park I believe at a free summer concert back in the 70's and was blown away at the power of all 3 ladies and the band was tight.....
I was there also and what you said is so true
Wish someone would upload that performance.
Yes, please upload that Central Park performance. Please. She really tore this song up...I'm being followed by a moononnnshadow. Oh my sister harmonizing..
I was 2 when it came out but I jam to this like I remember. the 70s kept real music. go miss labelle
I had been searching for the song for decades. I never knew the name. I only remembered the “if I ever lose my hands, legs, etc.” Then a few days ago, I heard the original recording by Cat Stevens and my daughter had Shazamed the title. And now I’ve found it. Thanks for this post.
The mixing on this track is so fire, Those drums are so crazy
one of the finest songs I have had the pleasure of listening to.
I keep telling people, Patti did the first rap I ever heard. ( When she breaks it down).
Have this song, Lady Marmalade and What Can I do for You on my playlist. My 3 top faves from these Masters of soul music!! Love you forever Nona, Sarah and Patti; forever LaBelle!!!
I know I have soul when I listen to this!
No more ham hocks and collard greens yes Lord
I was 16 when this song was out. Boy, what a trip down memory lane! Lol. Thanks, Ben. I am leapin' & a hoppin' on a moonshadow!!!
So was I.
I looked for this record in every record store for over 15 years. I finally found it in 2010.
You have classic... Enjoy..
Tasty vintage 70's Labelle classic. Maybe one of the first Labelle tunes following the Bluebells rename. I love Patti along with the rich harmony added by Sarah Dash and Nona Hendrix. The band is kicking 70's style with lots of organ and percussion. SAAWEET!!
Jazzy je this was actually the second Labelle. The first one, called "Labelle" which was the album that had "we won't get fooled again" and "you've got a friend" on it. Also included a song written by Sarah Dash and a couple of songs written by Nona Hendrix and Patti Labelle
I'm a huge Cat Stevens fan and i'd NEVER heard this!! This is beyond cool, a full on jam session. Love those funky vocal wig-outs from Patti!!
my all time favorite of Labelle
Just here to appreciate her greatness
This was my favorite!!!
Thanks for posting this. It came back to mind for some reason after almost 40 years.
Yes this cut is beautiful, FULLA SOUL! Tellin part of Black Folk's story.
Milton Cartwright I tell black folks story the Lord's way but I dig some cat Stevens/ yuseff Islam, telling about the what if we could do.nohomg without the hand in many I mean zillion ways. thanks mama Patti.
Thanks for the full version. Takes me back to the future...the "Circle Crew" from Ft. Greene...Chucky (Muscle and Black)...Odee, Raymey(RIP),Genieboy...Ham, Ramaro aka Tonto, Charles Dennis(RIP), Black,...you get the idea

Great tribute to Cat Stevens!
Thanks Ben. Love me some labelle!!
My oldest sister had this record when I was only 3 years old. That was in 1972.
I love this this song
thanks for blessing me
robbe hajnal 💖💖💖💖💖
This is the jawn
Thanks Ben for posting this "ICONIC" track. I was blessed to be able to perform this with a female vocal group when this was out and the management was such that we didn't perform anything unless, when played against the record, you couldn't tell the difference. These three women ( teenagers at the time ) have not been equaled by many female groups since...and are still performing. We used to "KILL" this!!!
Excellent
This was my sister's graduation party
Song.
Fantastic. Standout track on the Rhino Records What It Is! Funky Soul and Rare Grooves Comp. Highly recommended.
Christopher Newman the real labelle, not the cookie cutter night birds labelle.
Amazing...
7 thirty on the bongos. Damn I'm alive! Take me to church!
RIP Sarah Dash
Goodness ❤️
*******TIMELESS PATTI.......'MOON SHADOW******
Wow!!!!!
AMAZING TRACK
this should have been a #1 R&B Smash
Yeah, except it doesn't fit on a 45, sooooo....
They were able to squeeze 6'15" on to a 45', amazingly. But I know what you mean.
www.discogs.com/LaBelle-Moon-Shadow/release/6586068
It's not a #1 kind of song.
The longest song to ever hit #1 was American Pie by Don McLean. It was over 8 minutes long and fit on 2 sides of a 45. Probably every other #1 song in the last 60 years has fit on one side of a 45.
The US public doesn't have the kind of attention span to listen to an 8 minute song long enough to make it #1. And radio stations won't typically play a song that long. If you don't get airplay, it's difficult to hit #1.
I realize that things have changed somewhat since the internet took over. I doubt there will ever be another song the length of American Pie, but you never know. I'm no expert on the type of crap the US public will buy.
Oaklab Sound System yeah this recorded in the 70s and even the single was too long to be played on the radio.
Is there anything in my response that would lead you to believe that I think otherwise? I mean, you read my responses, right?
I know when it was recorded. I own it on vinyl and CD. It's one of my favorite songs. It took me 15 years to find this record, but I finally tracked it down in 2009.
yeaheyyy
epic...
Hey ! Yes! I like it ! It's hipper or R & B er !! ❤❤❤💯🎤🎵🎼🎶
im over lady marmalade.... are you lonely...messing with my mind....and so on
Sounds like Mr. Chuck Rainey on Bass to me
Yep Patti even says, "Chuck's gonna ride on that bass"
Wow
Not simply PERFECT HARMONY but an absolutely PERFECT BLEND!
NO SISTER's attempt to OUTSING, UPSTAGE the other!
THAT'S LOVE!! Word!
Zho..♏👑
Absolutely 💯
"PATTI LABELLE"........'MOONSHADOW".....'EPIC'
fucking ruff tune, excuse my French
4:10 the best stuff
Spider Webb on drums.....
Yep, Patti tells him, "Spider Webb, come on sock it to me"
...and he did just that !
But he couldn't have if he didn't have any hands. LOL
Who's playing Hammond?
@mcmike100 I have this record at home. If I remember, I'll check and get back to you.
Something that's bothered me for a long time: She says Maurice on the bongos. Maurice is playing congas.
I’m a die hard labelle fan but can someone please tell me what is this song about it was way before my time but I’m in love with the song already and want to know the meaning behind it
It's a cover of the Cat Stevens original
Carlton Hopkins it's about always looking on the bright side of things. For example, if you lose your arm, at least you don't have to work. If you lose your legs, at least you don't have to walk... etc.
Alex Bond Patti supports Alex's interpretation in her humorous monologue. But what do you make of the album cover? Three young, fly blk women at a bus stop surrounded by elderly white men. Gender, age, race, culture clashing? A sight gag?
Being grateful no matter your circumstances you find the bright side this song is teaching you how to survive life
I think it´s much more than gratefulness or the bright side. It´s non-violent resistance against the system that oppresses, crushes, maims, and even holds the power of death over its ¨subjects.¨ No, they don´t have the last word. It´s claiming triumph from under the heel of the empire.
Hey ! YUSUF/CAT THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO. GET UP & DANCE !! 🎸🎹🎺🥁🎛🪘🎼🎵🎶🎶👑👑

Bass Clef..,
Norman, used to tear up the floor with this monster track 😊
6:35 Scratching... sounds like a turntable but it's not.
+Jus Onexii it's definitely a not great rip from my vinyl. the scratching in that moment is actually in the recording...
I think it meant that it sounds like a hip hop dj scratching. And I do believe he was into it :)
They butchered a great Cat Stevens song
Why not just write your own song and trash that?
Don't be
Hell no son, they gave it more SOUL
SOMEBODY HATING...LOL
Hahahaha. You don’t have good taste.
