Great interview! Haven’t heard about Gene for decades and it’s great to see him well and happy. He had a magical game which I remember well. Thank you and more tennis interviews please!

just found your channel, living in carpinteria, . Those outside courts were and still are rough... They dont place the marquee players on the outside court
Being a young tennis player in Denver circa 1980, I was lucky enough to ballboy several times for Gene at the United Bank Tennis Classic. Gene was always very kind on the court, with the best disguise of any player I've ever seen (I played Division 1 tennis at University of Colorado). At altitude, with the older rackets, serve - and serve volley dominated (Steve Denton, Kevin Curran, Victor Amaya). Gene would carve them up with amazing control. Those were the days.😉
"Connecting with people that there's meaningful relations with" . Well put Gene! I agree 100% I got to know Gene when he was 11 and I was 12. We played a few junior doubles tournaments together and I got to witness first hand the variety that Sandy eventually suggested he tone down. Great to see you looking so well Genie. I worked at tennis clubs from 16-44 in NJ then moved to West Palm Beach and switched to teaching yoga and doing massage therapy. Stay well, Buddy.

I remember when Gene Mayer beat Bjorn Borg and John Mcenroe at the Master in NYC at the MSG!!

Never happened, McEnroe did not lose to G Mayer at Wimbledon. Mayer was a fine player, but that did not happen.

Gene was a dedicated, intelligent, well-versed player. I'm glad he shared two interviews with me.
