  • Where do the majority of the meteorites that have fallen to earth reside? Who owns the largest known collection of minerals that have been extracted from the State of Maine? The answer to both questions is right here, at the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum. Today, I take you inside the largest collection of Meteorites & Maine minerals ever compiled. Join me as I explore the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum!
The Maine mineral and Gem Museum is the worlds premier gallery of Meteorites, with over 6000 specimens. It is home to the worlds largest collection of Lunar Meteorites (meteorites from the Moon) including the largest piece of the Moon to ever fall to Earth. In fact, there is more lunar meteorites here than in all the natural history museums on earth combined. It is also home to worlds largest collection of Martian meteorites (meteorites from Mars), with more pieces of Mars on display than NASA owns!
The museum houses many historic meteorite fragments, such as one from Vesta, the second-largest asteroid in our solar system, and one of the largest objects in the asteroid belt.
Also, on display here are many other unique meteorites guaranteed to ignite your curiosity such as, @14:49 You can see NWA 11119 an igneous meteorite, which was formed by the cooling and solidification of magma or lava (which is what magma is called once it reaches a planet's surface). The oldest rocks on Earth are dated as 3.8 billion years old. The Solar System is dated as 4.568 billion years old. At 4.6 billion years old, NWA 11119 is the oldest igneous meteorite ever discovered. Large silica crystals, called tridymite, account for about 30 percent of NWA 11119. That amount of tridymite is comparable to what's found in volcanic rocks on Earth, but it's unheard of in meteorites. There are over 6,000 more meteorites to learn about held at the museum, each with it's own unique story and composition.
This museum holds over 40,000 stunning gems and minerals from across the State of Maine. Maine has a unique type of granite called pegmatite. This course grained granite can produce rare earth minerals. In fact, Other than southern California, Maine is the only State in the USA that has a granite pegmatite that has produced abundant gem tourmaline.
Personally, I have been obsessed with minerals since I was a kid. I have been panning gold and mining pegmatites as a hobby for over 10 years. I am truly proud to have this museum in my home State. I plan to create many more videos in the future inspired by these displays to help educate and share my passion for learning about them with all of you!
The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. It is an incredibly stimulating, engaging, and thought-provoking experience that everyone should witness for themselves.
