    I am a long time street photographer here in NYC. I have been shooting the streets of NY for 30 years, I shoot medium format digital, film, FF and APC. Here is my method of shooting street with medium format, before I go out for the day I ask myself what type of day do I want it to be? meaning a fast day or slow day, if I am going to shoot fast events or subjects such as parades, street fairs, motorcycles etc its going to be a fast day. So I will grab one of my faster cameras because I know medium doesn't do so well in fast situations. Now don't get me wrong you can still get some very interesting photos shooting a fast subject with a medium format camera. But if its going to be a day where I am looking for what I call "The Shot" it's going to be a slow day; so I grab my Hassey H5D. Let me explain, when I go out with the Hassey I am looking for that special shot that allows me time to frame, compose and focus quickly. I try to get the shot 60 sec or less and move on, again not saying you can't catch an interesting fast shots. but I find when I am able to take my time, I get some amazing shots and more keepers per say. When I walk down Broadway or in midtown for example and I see the folks handing out flyers or street preformers I will ask them can I take their picture and most will say yes and I get some amazing portraits. When I see a fast shot that my not be suited for the Hassey I pull out my trusty Sony A6000 and pop off some fast shots. There is nothing like the results you get from a medium format especially when you get the "shot" :)

    If you think using the GFX was difficult for street photography then you should check out the work of French Press Photographer Eric Bouvet, he uses a 10x8 Woodyman.

    I agree!! It’s fast, but it’s slow. I think it’s better suited for landscape and product photography. Until the technology advances it will always be a niche camera.

    Hi Evan, no surprise in your conclusion, I am a GFX50S owner and love it but I use it for landscape not street. Good that you've explained the ups and downs of it for street and maybe the 50R would suit better. Fair to say though the 63mm is the worst of the GF lenses for AF if you try the 50R get it with the 45mm it's a way faster lens. You are the truth man.

    • @RanftEvan
      @RanftEvan  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the insight! I had a feeling the 63 was one of the more basic ones just off how the files felt but I didn’t want to say that without knowing for sure! I’m really curious about the growth of medium format, I think in the next few years people who are photo centered are going to begin to migrate in this direction more and more

      @@RanftEvan I had a quick try with the R at my local camera shop with the 45 on. I didn't like the feel of it in my hand but if I were a street shooter I might think differently. For my general shooting I used to use the X-Pro1 but I now use Leica M9 so I've gone backwards really with manual focus. I have thought recently about getting a 45mm to just have as a general shooting option with my S but what's holding me back is I love my M9s.

    Yeah, when "they" finally find a way (without flash) to make a medium format camera that behaves in every way (except for output) like a full frame or apsc (shutter, auto focus, etc...) it will (imo) radically change the game for sports/action/wildlife/street. As it stands, however, medium format is still such a joy to experience when you get the chance, but a guy can dream, can't he?

    why not get one of the evf tilt adaptors. I think those can solve some of the issues with people being alarmed in the presence if this big camera. Raising a camera to eye level is something people instintually notice. The size of this camera just aggravates that. I find that usually waist level shoting makes people a lot less aware of the fact that your taking a picture. Maybe because we're more natually aware what our eyes are doing, so if you look downwards instead of straight at them, even they conceptually understand it's the lens that's pointing at them, they're not as nervous.
    looking downwards means you hold the camera a lot closer to chest, hence it's a much easier and steadier hold too. I honestly don't know why street photographers don't do this more often.

    I wonder how much better the 50R would be with the 35mm equivalent. Much smaller setup. Then maybe try setting the focus manually with the hyper focal distance. If you don’t like that size then you just need to use a compact camera like your Fuji apsc

    • @jgranseth
      @jgranseth 5 років тому

      I also think the 50r would be the better GFX camera for street photography for most people, but you can hardly call the 50r + the 45mm a "much smaller setup" than the 50s with the 63mm.
      While the 50r is slimmer, it's actually a bit wider than the 50s. The 45mm is also noticably longer than the 63mm.
      So yes, the 50r is a bitt smaller overall, but for all intents and purposes it's still a quite large camera. For something substantially smaller, you would indeed have to go for something like the X-Pro2 or the X100F, like you mentioned in your comment.

    Try the 50 3.5. Maybe zone focus. Maybe try auto focus wide tracking in single shot focus mode. Sure maybe it's not a "street photography" camera but look at all the people running around with DSLRs saying they are landscape photographers. Also remember grabbing a camera and going on foot patrol making snapshots is not street photography. That is simply photography on the street. Put some effort into it.

    I don't think that speed is always needed for street photography. Sure it's nice but with a camera you're forced to slow down, in the same ways that film does. You can't react as fast so you spend more time composing particular ideas. You'll catch less moments for sure, but you'll gain different ideas as a result.

      Yeah for sure, I still think the general speed would be a hindrance (if it performs like the S) however the R is smaller and could solve some of the things I mentioned about the camera not being lowkey enough (for street photos)

    • @mistermadsen
      @mistermadsen 5 років тому

      @@RanftEvan The R is thinner but also wider. It actually feels bigger in the hands. I have the S ( for 1 1/2 year already ) , and tried the R, but the S is much more pleasing to the hand, with a good grip.
