The ‘newer’ mask presented in this episode is supposed to represent antidepressants Before the adventure starts, Gangel states that she used to be a shift manager (presumably in her real life before the circus) In Jax’s training tape, gangle offhandedly mentions that one’s dreams are often unrealistic (specifically mentioning an instance of a failed web manga artist) Then near the end of the episode we see gangel drawing an manga-styles character With these factors combined, it’s evident that Gangel’s dream as a human before the circus was to be a successful web manga artist, only for her to be unsuccessful in this endeavor and ending up as a miserable and depressing shift manager Near the end of the episode, Zooble tells Gangel that “they can find a new mask that fits better,” which then again can be an allegory for antidepressants Throughout this episode, there is a notable absence of ambient sfx and background music, a choice which is likely deliberate This creates an emotionally empty atmosphere, which I believe is further reflected by how much more realistic the main cast is behaving in comparison to their usual demeanor Another notable thing to mention is Gangel becoming notably upset and unconfident whenever Ragstha and Jax mentioned they liked her better when she was sad/not herself and easier to deal with, which can also be tied back to when Gangel expresses how she can’t tell whether Ragatha’s attempts at comfort are genuine or not All in all this episode, I believe, to be the best in the series, as it is by far the episode that doesn’t progress the plot in any meaningful way, but shoved the spotlight on the characters and their development in a not only respectable way but also realistic and relatable
i'd say for the Ragatha/Jax part it's likely more likely she hates herself in her depressive side BECAUSE that's the real her, how she really feels, but she doesn't WANT to be sad, i mean no depressed person does, so it feels like a stab in the back when they say that they like her more when she's depressed, while on one hand that can mean they want her to be herself and not force a happy persona it will always come across poorly to a depressed person
@@Definitelynotjamez06 i have a theory that all the characters has a specific reason for why they’re in the circus, and their abstraction are caused by more then just depression. My thought is that, gangles has bipolar disorder. So in the past, that might of made her do a suicidal attempt while in her depressive episode, hitting a truck after a shift, where she barely survived. The injuries were to severe that she had her mind being put in the circus. The abstraction scene was oddly specific, she was in a extremely depressive state walking towards the exit like if the past would’ve repeat itself.

I think everyone has something that keeps them sane; Gangle has her drawings, Zooble is to search for new body parts, Jax is to be an a-hole to everyone, Kinger has his pillow fort, Ragatha has forced optimism, Kaufmo had jokes... For Pomni is listening to others.
Mike you skipped what Ragatha says in episode 2, right before Pomni is about to have a mental breakdown, Ragatha says Caine likes reusing NPCs, thus the "memory wipe"
I find the part where gangle gets hit by the truck interesting. Makes me think the circus is just an afterlife rather than a vr type game. Ragatha also mentions that shes tired from getting hit in the head by boxes and to my knowledge, that didn't happen in an episode. Maybe thats the way she went out (or the deep fryer lol)
Pomni fully knew she had a VR headset right at the beginning of Episode 1 so I don't think it's like that for everyone; but I did get the feeling that they might have put the headset to a comatose Gangle after a depressive meltdown that almost killed her.
@@Dairunt1 guess that's fair. I won't try to come back at you with something like "maybe she died with the headset on" because Jax also acknowledges the fact that he put on a headset
I feel like for this theory to make sense, what happened is that Gangle got hit by a truck, is paralyzed irl and can't do anything, but still alive (unfortunately or fortunately depends on how you view it), and the C&A company offered some patients a "VR experience" so they can "enjoy living again"
@@mariotheundying i feel like this is the way, that OR i think it could be a thing where every person in the circus (except maybe Pomni) had some tragic accident that left them Comatose (Ragatha took a box to the head, Gangle got hit by a car during a manic episode, potentially Kinger taking his own life after the death of his wife or doing something that gets them both into a Comatose state, if the theories about last ep are true) and the people at CnA uses them as test subjects for their new Tech or something, when you abstract you are fully giving up on yourself and on life which makes you Flatline irl, maybe a residue of your mind stays behind in the Abstraction which is why some of them can retain a bit of sentience
Tbh, I was unsure about the Amazing Digital Circus, but every episode I actually become more and more of a fan. I really like how they tackle a lot of serious issues in a respectful and relatable way
Without a doubt! I was entirely skeptical when the first episode came out, but probably like two weeks later at a costuming competition I met a girl who put together a Kinger costume within weeks before the con, she was just that passionate about it. Seeing that level of dedication is what convinced me to give the show a shot, and I have to say it’s absolutely one of my favorite shows of the past few years. It’s so well animated and handles it’s topics really well, finding a nice balance in the humor while still giving the topics the care and respect they deserve.
11:14 Notice how Gummigoo subtly reacts to Pomni saying his name? I think previous NPCs remember at least something about previous encounters when the circus members say their names or something important that the NPC experienced
@SakuraLuckyStar I also seen people feel it is him reacting to like someone who is being super close to them when they don't feel the same, like someone trying to talk to you when you don't know them.
When Gangle took off her mask I think that it was an allegory for her taking drugs or anti depressants to cope and after her shift she tripped and died in the street. Also when she took it off everything went hazy and bright as if she was high or just exhausted. They must’ve sent her to the circus because of her death as a last resort or they might’ve used her body to test if the circus worked as a way to save peoples consciousnesses.
i think at the end that's her coming OFF the high of the drugs in an allegory sense, she gets high on Power in the ep (anti depressants) she starts to feel it wear off at the end and then she leaves realizing they don't actually do anything to help and has a mental breakdown before tripping and getting run over But yeah i agree with that last bit, i think that's EXACTLY what's been going on, Gangle likely got into an accident the way it played out this ep, Ragatha hinted that she got into an accident this ep as well, Kinger is into Computer Science and if the theories are true maybe he caused an accident with his wife and joined CnA to use the tech to save her or to at least be with her and if i had to guess Pomni is either a private detective of some sorts looking into the situation or an employee of CnA that went in to monitor the current patients status
Ragatha said in ep 2 that caine likes to bring NPCs back at some point like gummygoo and the queen so he erased there memory so they can't remember about the circus
when Gangle said: "Three more seasons" (6:38), I think its a foreshadow that TADC is a 7 series because this episode is the 4th episode, and so it will foreshadow that next episode (episode 5) will be a 5th episode. which means that after the 5th episode, there will be 2 more episodes left.
Yeah, Ragatha tried consoling Pomni with, "Caine likes to recycle NPC's" at the end of Episode 2. Also, this episode was materfully paced, it was funny, I loved all of the character interactions. They're still funny during downtime and it's awesome.

The ‘newer’ mask presented in this episode is supposed to represent antidepressants
Before the adventure starts, Gangel states that she used to be a shift manager (presumably in her real life before the circus)
In Jax’s training tape, gangle offhandedly mentions that one’s dreams are often unrealistic (specifically mentioning an instance of a failed web manga artist)
Then near the end of the episode we see gangel drawing an manga-styles character
With these factors combined, it’s evident that Gangel’s dream as a human before the circus was to be a successful web manga artist, only for her to be unsuccessful in this endeavor and ending up as a miserable and depressing shift manager
Near the end of the episode, Zooble tells Gangel that “they can find a new mask that fits better,” which then again can be an allegory for antidepressants
Throughout this episode, there is a notable absence of ambient sfx and background music, a choice which is likely deliberate
This creates an emotionally empty atmosphere, which I believe is further reflected by how much more realistic the main cast is behaving in comparison to their usual demeanor
Another notable thing to mention is Gangel becoming notably upset and unconfident whenever Ragstha and Jax mentioned they liked her better when she was sad/not herself and easier to deal with, which can also be tied back to when Gangel expresses how she can’t tell whether Ragatha’s attempts at comfort are genuine or not
All in all this episode, I believe, to be the best in the series, as it is by far the episode that doesn’t progress the plot in any meaningful way, but shoved the spotlight on the characters and their development in a not only respectable way but also realistic and relatable
