The video touch very sensitive themes the videos of gaga in that time ( The born this way album ) are a critic to the religion, LGBTI empowered
The song is about lose that person your true love (alejandro) Fernando and Roberto are just a reference to had a relationship with another person thinking and loving alejandro because he is your real love the video and the song are not very related just a little bit had more deep messages
Gaga is really Catholic believe it or no ; so i don't think this is a critic on religion but is more like an interpretation , she is an artist so the meanings of her videos are not obvious but more implicit

I’ve heard many analysis and interpretations that talk about Alejandro being about her fear of men? That she keeps choosing the wrong men to love, theres also an indication in the lyrics that talk about her men who keep controlling her in relationships, almost like an overprotective father.
“But her boyfriends like a dad, just like a dad”... another analysis was about her always finding herself falling in love with gay men but can never truly be with them other than in a platonic way. Basically there are many interpretations to Alejandro but the way I interpret it, is the latter. She’s definitely talking about herself and how she keeps falling in love with these different gay men, or even envying the bravery it takes for gay men to fight for their right to love the person they want to love. There are soldiers in fishnets, dressed down, passed out drunk, and there’s only one soldier who’s sober and dressed properly, with a stonecold poker face. He’s looking at the other men, naked, dancing, with almost a judgmental face. Like there’s a part in him that wants to join them but he can’t, he’s afraid but pretending to be tough and judgmental. You could also argue that this man is gay and hiding in the closet and afraid to come out due to being in the military. DONT ASK DONT TELL was a huge deal in the military and Gaga was outspoken about it. Basically you can interpret this magnificent video in so many ways. That’s the brilliant mind of Gaga. She’s extremely multifaceted.

The song kinda has two meanings behind it. The Fame Monster, the album this song, Bad Romance, and Telephone, is about different "monsters". Specifically Alejandro is the Monster of Men. Each man mentioned is a past "boyfriend" in her life, or rather someone significant. Alejandro is named after Alexander McQueen, one of Gaga's favorite designers who had committed suicide just months prior to this song's release. Fernando is Fernando Garibay, one of the producers she worked with for the album, and then Roberto is Rob Fusari, an old producer and an ex-boyfriend. The song is basically her saying goodbye to these men, although Fernando Garibay worked with her on Born This Way. Fernando is also a reference to the ABBA song "Fernando", ABBA is a huge musical inspiration to Gaga, as well as Madonna.
I definitely think you should listen to Poker Face, Paparazzi (which is basically a short movie) or Just Dance from her first album, as you haven't reacted to any songs from that album yet. Born This Way (another long production) is one of her most iconic songs, it's on the same album as Judas, Marry the Night (another long music video) is also on that album. From ArtPop you should listen to Applause and G.U.Y. (and yet another long one). If you want to see some more toned down Gaga (well in terms of style at least), there's Perfect Illusion and Million Reasons.
You should watch either of her Superbowl performances 💜 Or her live Oscar's Sound of Music performance.
I 2nd the Superbowl performance!!! It's PG so you don't see much skin..imo it's the best solo superbowl performances ever (and I stan Prince and his was iconic but hers...just check it out, plz)

The song and the music video have multiple layers and can be interpreted with different approaches/perspectives.
Based on the interpretations I've come across so far, together with the info I've found on the internet, IMO, I believe the song and mv are about:
- On the societal/cultural level, it's about the conflicts between humanity, religion, and war, and a lot of time many people are being stuck in between and pressured/forced to choose a side.
Humanity as in freedom to love who they love and be themselves, personal sexualities, sex and genders, and self-liberation (represented by mushroom head guys in different scenes) |
Religion as in structured beliefs and disciplines, price to pay for salvation, personal faith vs personal identity/existential beliefs, be your own religion and keep religious judgments to yourself (represented by gaga in religious-themed costume in different scenes, the swallow rosary part should be referring to keep religious judgments to yourself) |
War as in general conflicts in the society with a metaphorical expression and not a literal armed military war between 2 factions or more, which to be relevant it'd probably refer to conflicts based on humanity vs religions, to prioritize religious beliefs and disciplines even if they neglect humanity and are unnecessarily cruel or outdated, or to give up your faiths and leave your religion because you prioritize humanity and want to fight for humanity but you're losing hope and feeling rejected by your religion. (represented by the interactions between mushroom head guys and gaga in religious-themed costume). Also, the authorities/authority figures just looking at the conflicts escalate and continue (burning) without doing anything constructively (represented by the random dude getting screentime looking disapproval in the background with building burning, not helping or fixing anything/anyone)
- On the personal level, for gaga or anyone with similar experiences, it's about she had been attracted to and even fell in love with a gay guy (or more) that it's a struggle for her to leave him while trying to suppress her feelings (dead heart, funeral, telling Alejandro the guy at 4:52 she can't do it anymore, intro + first verse + Pre-chorus).
She has observed some of the gay people she knows in her circle (watching mushroom head guys dancing), she envies their love and intimacy level (being in sync, dancy, passionate and erotic) and sometimes want to flirt with or pursue them or had flirted with guys that she who she wasn't aware about at first but later found out them to be gay or even had sex with some closeted gay people before (s&m and other sexual scenes, closeted ones might be the one where the mushroom head guy being the dominant one instead of gaga) but she knows she's not the one for them (so they stop the sexual scenes and whatever and proceed to dance instead) and don't want them to continue putting up a facade pretending to be in love and fakely being intimate (don't call my name etc, chorus + interlude + verse 2).
There were times when she kinda struggled with her religious beliefs (gaga in her religious-themed costume) against her bisexuality which those times were unpeaceful and full of conflicts (fire in the background) but she was supported and protected by her lgbt friends and community (danced around by and lifted up by the mushroom head guys), she didn't become judgmental and critical of lgbt people like some religious people do because she keeps her renewed faith to herself and be the 'religion' for herself (swallow the rosary, be the 'religion' for herself as in her faiths and religious journeys are her own and belong to her, she shouldn't and cannot judge other people based on her religious beliefs or force her religion on other people, whether other people are fellow followers or not, and other people should not and do not have power over her faith too, as she will have her faith judged by her god and not by other human beings).
Then, her realization and resolve have her found the determination and confidence to fight for humanity for lgbt+ community (the scene of vintage black and white filter with guys strutting next to gaga dancing until gunbra scene, singing in front of a mic = she fights through her arts and musics too, random cut-ins of black and white scenes of mushroom head guys and her lying on bed with religious themed costume = flashbacks, random guy with a disapproval look = people who don't support or even anti what she's fighting for, fire in the background = conflicts and struggles, mushroom guys surround her then she goes naked then they hold and touch her = she shared her truth to them as part of the community and got embraced by them).
The final bed scene with Alejandro where she lying dead on the bed in religious-themed costume = She felt dead inside at the time about herself and about Alejandro due to her religious beliefs and struggles when she went through that heartbreak but all the previous scenes (where she dances with mushroom head guys etc until she shared the truth part) were the things she thought of in her head when she's finding her resolve/determination in her mind. Finally, lights come out from her eyes and mouth burning the whole scene to mark the end of the mv = she found hopes(lights) and determination in herself and the hopes eliminate the pessimistic feels she had (marking the end of the mv that has a darker tone and blue black grey atmosphere and aesthetics).
Well, of course there are more meanings to the song/mv but these are my interpretations that I personally got from the song/mv and resonated with.

Rain on me is great but I really miss her long ass videos with Intros and 20 different locations like this one. Telephone, G.U.Y, Alejandro, Paparazzi, Marry the Night, Judas, Born this Way,...are all fucking masterpieces and like a short movie. Hope she will do that again 😭
The song is about the fear for men. Alejandro is a song from the fame monster album with eight songs. Each song is a fear/monster in her life or in others life.

It is my interpretation that this song/video is a metaphor for the Christian church (“she” pronoun in the song), the LGBT community (the “you” pronoun in the song), and the holy trinity (the “he” pronoun - also Alejandro, Fernando & Roberto”). In short, I believe this song is about members of the LGBT community who want to remain the church and love God be turned away by the church because of who they are. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
The church is “married” to God (“halo around her finger” lyric). They hide his “true love” from the LGBT community because they wish to ignore their plight and judge them for being gay.
Therefore, the LGBT community cannot love God because the church has downtrodden him (no matter how much he “fights fires”).The LGBT community turns away from God, Jesus and The Holy Spirit) (Alejandro, Fernando and Roberto) all because the church refuses to share his love with them.

this song in combination with the video portrays gaga’s feelings about how the catholic church treats gay people. the pronoun “she” in the song references the catholic church. the pronoun “he” in the song references God, and the pronoun “you” references gay people/LGBT community. “Alejandro,” “Fernando” and “Roberto” represent the holy trinity: God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Gaga essentially is saying that the catholic church is turning gay people against God.

And the upside down crosses on her genitals and back of head are meant to represent the perception in religious society that women are sexual devices and this is a theme that runs throughout a lot of her songs.
She put this out when we (US) were fighting for gay marriage to be legalized. And how the military required that their gay members “don’t ask don’t tell”, in others words keep quiet about their gayness, or be dishonorably discharged. It also had to do with how after her fame all her ex lovers started calling (in the lyrics)
