Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on UA-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his UA-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on UA-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on UA-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
Actually, if it's an official video from "Holidays Around The World," their 2022 Christmas album, there are likely to be instruments that you won't see in the video. That album involved collaborations with musicians on several continents and COVID travel restrictions were still in place when they were making it so their collaborators couldn't appear in the videos with them. Also, there are a few of their official videos that contain important visual effects that can't be duplicated live. The three that spring to mind are "Imagine," "Bohemian Rhapsody," and "Aha!". Musically, however, their live performances are just as good as their official videos. Oh, yes. And we try to avoid pitch forks and torches whenever possible.
Do you have this saved for copy and pasting on every new reactors upload? It would take so long to type all this! Plus, I’m sure I’ve seen it a few times recently… 😁👍🏻🏴
@@Miobambino I do the same, except on my tablet rather than my PC. I vary a few things now and then, but right now I'm limited to hunt-and-peck on screen typing because of recent surgery to my left hand, so entering it all by hand every time is impossible and prone to typos. I have separate files for "Sound of Silence" and "Imagine" and "Hallelujah" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" and SuperFruit's version of "Rise," and one that identifies all the members. I discovered Pentatonix less than a year ago, just a few months after my husband killed himself. It's been a difficult year, but Pentatonix has helped. And most of the things I put in my comments are the things I would have found most helpful to know back when I first discovered Pentatonix, things like how to pronounce names, and who's who, and where to look for what.
The "Trio" (Scott Hoying, the tall blonde, white haired in the video. Mitch Grassi, shorter guy, high pitch counter tenor, first singer in the video. Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado, the woman with the blue wig) all were friends from high school/middle school and have been singing together since at least then. They brought in Avi Kaplan (the bass vocals) and Kevin Olusola (the beatboxer, also sings as a tenor) to perform on the Sing Off season 3 back in 2011, which they won. They've been a group since then, with only 1 member change. in 2017 Avi Kaplan left and Matt Sallee joined as the newest member.
@@MaddyReactions Scott and Kirstin apparently were a grade senior to Mitch... and went to HS in Arlington Tx.... about 60 minutes from here. I read where Mitch had to cut class his Senior year in HS to join them in the acapella contest, I've never met them, so I don't really know. I also heard that this video was made after they were dropped by the label that signed them.... and they shot this one piece at a time in a closet LOL! If I remember correctly, this video won them a "Grammy".
Best acapella band around...... Home Free fans might disagree! :) Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' is a masterpiece, but you can pick anything they've done and you won't be disappointed!
I would add voiceplay for the sacred acapella trio. Really matter of a taste, which one you like the most. I am personally obsessed with PTX, especially their original music.
Welcome to the PTX Rabbit Hole of Transcendent Talent! Each member has an amazing vocal range, their cover + original arrangements are exciting/poignant/inspiring/fill in the ___, their videos are thoughtful + engaging. Plus they all bring such joy to their craft!😍
Fun fact: I met these guys twice. I love hearing them sing live. They are just as good live, sometimes even better. They did however have to hire another member when Avi Kaplan (The guy with the beard who does the bass) had to leave the group for personal reasons in 2017 (I think it was) Matt Sallee is their new bass and he is a sweetheart.
Another PTX newbie falling into the rabbit hole! I love it! I'm one of the Pentaholics that have been with them since the beginning, as I discovered them on Season 3 of The Sing Off. I HIGHLY suggest you look for Pentatonix Sing Off Season 3, and watch all of those videos. That will show you where and how they got their start, and how innovative they were even back then. Pentatonix truly revolutionized the A Capella scene and paved the way for groups like Home Free (Season 4 winners of the Sing Off, a country vocal band with an excellent sound), Voice Play (a group that has had some member changes, but has become another innovative vocal band) and Filharmonic (a Filipino group, also from Sing Off Season 4, along with Voice Play and Home Free). You should probably also know, this was the second video they produced after winning the Sing Off in Season 3. Their first, was the Radioactive cover. At this point, they had been together for maybe a year (if you include their time in the Sing Off). As someone else mentioned, they are just THAT good. I also highly recommend you check out their Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Many people told them it couldn't be done - a group with no instruments singing a song with no lyrics. It was their second grammy. That's the one thing Pentatonix is known for: pushing the boundaries and coming up with arrangements that most would say can't be done.
Bass always gets second billing. It's like the male dancer in a pair competition. But both are key to the success of the whole. And the more spectacular the rest of the group comes off reflects the excellent work of the lesser recognized party. So great to see Avi shine as a solo artist these days.
Welcome to PTX! You’ve got twelve years worth of mind blowing rabbit hole to dive into, and if you go there, we go with you! Three of them were together singing in high school, yes: Kirstin, Scott, (the white haired one), and Mitch (who started the video). They added Avi and Kevin when they auditioned for the Sing Off Season 3, which they won. Pentatonix has been making great music (covers, originals, collaborations, solo projects, Christmas music, tv appearances, etc.) ever since! Avi, left the group in 2017, so some videos will feature him, and others will have their current bass, Matt. All the other members remain the same but be aware that Kirstin and Mitch are fashion and style chameleons who change up their looks often. Subbed for more!
You have just discovered the best in the acapella world! Their catalog is over 200 songs (including originals) and this will not be the last time your mind is blown!! Subscribed for more Pentatonix!!!
Your right on the mark asking if they were in a high school choir together. In fact, Scott, Kirsty and Mitch literally were. All three went to high school together and were in choirs and sung together all the time. After Scott and Kirsty's freshman year in college they entered a NBC show called the "Sing off" which was an acapella group competition. To be in the show, they added Avi(bass) and Kevin(beatboxing), which are stories in theirselves. They won the competition, moved to LA to begin their group, 3 grammys, 2 platium, 2 gold albums and 6 billion UA-cam views later MaddyReactions finds them.
Hi welcome to the incredible talent and innovation that is PTX. They are so amazingly talented. We who love them are called Pentaholics. Suggest you next try their Cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, Or perhaps. Hallelujah or Sound of Silence . 90s dance melody is very fun and their evolution videos are great My favorites are evolution of Micheal Jackson and Evolution of Rhianna.
"That bass" is courtesy of Avi Kaplan who has been known to blow out speakers when they performed live. Kevin Olusola is their beatboxer who is also a talented tenor, plays the cello, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. This cover won the Grammy for best production, with a budget of only $400, and a week during which Avi's closet was their sound booth.
If you are a fan of EDM they have an original EDM style song called Love Again. You will not believe there are no instruments. Love Again was on the same EP at Daft Punk. The costumes in that song are crazy as well.
Thank you so much for reacting to this group -- I have heard them perform this live and multiple times on YT; however, you are the first to explain the "blue tribute". Thank you so much- Great Reaction!!
They've got so big since then and 100% deserve it. Extraordinarily talented. This is my favorite of theirs. They usually do a new holiday song every year. Enjoy the rabbit hole.
I think I have seen every single reaction to this brilliant track and yours just adds to the lustre about this band. IMHO Pentatonix are THE accapella band and this is one of thier finest tracks. Love to see you review their version of Hallelujah, that'll make you cry for sure.
They have over 20 million subscribers, and more then 5.5 billion views combined. They are huge. I'm what you call one their Pentaholics fans out of millions of us.
Great reaction!! This group is awesome. They actually won their first Grammy with this video. They have won 2 more so far (Jolene with Dolly Parton and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy) and just this year were awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ptx has so many covers and also original works as well. Run to You and Love Again are two of my favorite originals thus far. I am actually going to see them in concert next weekend at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia. I hope you check out their other covers (upgrades) as well. There are so many that are recommended but some popular ones are Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence, Mad World, Amazing Grace, The Prayer, and the list goes way beyond this. One last bit of info....you had asked how they started out. They actually started out with 3 that went to high school together and formed an A Cappello group (Kirsti, Mitch, Scott). After high school, they wanted to Audition for a show called The Sing-Off (Season 3) and knew that they needed something extra for their group. They found their beatboxer (Kevin) on UA-cam and their Bass (Avi) through, I believe a mutual friend. They won and this launched their career. The only group member that changed is Avi, their bass. He left to do his own work and Matt was recruited to replace him.
@@MaddyReactionsYou are not wrong. 😃 Interestingly, it's the first time Dolly won a Grammy for Jolene. She was nominated twice for performance in '75 and '76 but didn't win. Then along comes her collaboration with Pentatonix in 2017 and they all win Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
@@dwfarr I totally agree. For those who don't know, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy was composed as part of the score for the Nutcracker ballet. So, a musical piece without words performed by a group without instruments, go figure!!!
Exactly right! Three of them were in HS together and got the other two together when they wanted to compete on the Sing Off. I know everyone below me has told you all about them. I subscribed to hear and watch your ride with Pentatonix. I'm a hard-core fan and am really excited for this. Your reaction was excellent!!! Thanks.
They won a Grammy for this arrangement. Well deserved. If you haven’t seen them, check out Hallelujah, Can You Feel The Love Tonight by them as well. For whatever reason those and this daft punk song are stuck in me. I watch them and the reactions all the time.
@@MaddyReactions They’re really quite amazing. First they have an ethos of giving their fans real (unprocessed) music in the studio and on stage. Then, no bad words or songs that disrespect anyone. Lastly, when thanking their fans from stage, they frequently tear up. I just love them.
Ooooo! A Pentatonix newbie! How exciting! It was especially great that you are familiar with Daft Punk, because some reactors who don't know them aren't clear that this is a medley. Pentatonix does terrific mash-ups, and their transitions are so seamless that it can be hard to tell where one song ends and the next begins. One of my favourites is their fast-paced, one-take MJ tribute, "The Evolution of Michael Jackson." It's an oldie of theirs, but it gives you a great sense of their individual talents. Welcome to PTX and the enthusiasm of their fans, the Pentaholics. Liked and subbed for more. 🥰
Evolution of MJ has an official video (one take) plus it's part of an MTV concert in Japan called Popspring Performance 2016. It showcases 3 original songs plus MJ evolution. Yes, they sound this good live.
Congratulations on finding Pentatonix. Yes they have been singing together for years! Kirstie, Scott (tall, blonde) and Mitch (black hair high tenor voice) have been friends since they were young children (Kirstie and Mitch when they were 8, Scott and Mitch when they were 8 and Kirstie and Scott when they were 10). The three of them sang together in high school. In 2011 they decided to enter the a cappella singing contest 'The Sing-off' and they needed at least five members so they found their Beatboxer Kevin (the one with the vizor on!) on UA-cam where he was beatboxing and playing the cello and they found their bass singer Avi through a friend of a friend. They won the Sing Off and got a Sony record contract but Sony dropped them after a couple of weeks because they didn't think a cappella music was marketable. They decided to go for it on their own and started their own UA-cam channel. 12 years later and only one member change (Avi left the group in 2017 amicably for personal reasons - his mum was very unwell- and he was replaced with Matt Sallee who is also awesome!). They now have over 20 million UA-cam subscribers, around 13 best-selling albums, 3 Grammy's (the first one was for this Daft Punk Medley!), and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They have a catalogue of over 200 songs. They are best known for their covers (Hallelujah has had over 700 million views on UA-cam!) and for their Christmas music but their originals music is incredible and much under-rated. They all have brilliant solo projects (and Avi does too!) and they encourage each other but have an agreement that Pentatonix will always come first. They were semi finalists in the Masked Singer USA recently and they have sung the Star Spangled Banner at a sports' event. They tour all round teh worls and I saw them in May this year in London. UK having been a 'Pentaholic' since their Sing-off day in 2011. They are just incredible. Each of them has an incredible unique voice and together they are magical. They cover many different styles including: pop, rock, hip hop, musical theatre, a bit of country, world music, rap, EDM, dance, etc so there really is something for everyone. As a PTX newbie I would always recommend Hallelujah, their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, The Prayer, if you like EDM their original Love again is brilliant and it has a cool alien Steampunk vibe! Enjoy the rabbit hole!
The elite acapella groups are such a fun rabbit hole. Pentatonix (PTX) Bohemian rhapsody got Queen's Brian May attention when they released it Their 90s dance medley is stunning how it is all vocal but could be played in a club Their grammy for sugar plum fairy was first time an acapella group tackled a symphonic piece. Voiceplay followed their lead with an amazing acapella version of Hall of the Mountain King
Saw this on recommended as i like reactions to Nightwish and stuff a lot. Wasn't gonna watch. Then I did. SO GLAD. This lovely human has one of the most infectious and lovely smiles I've seen in a while, it warmed me to see it. Definitely gonna stick around, always glad to find one of those people that just radiate good happy vibes and cheerieness~
Ahahaha...no matter how many reaction video's I see with this awesome version of "daft punk" Maddy's moves are so symbolic of every one whoever watches this awesome video, LOL...
After they won the sing off, the record label ended up dropping them. They made this video in Kevin and Avi's apartment. It cost them $400.00 to make and they won their first Grammy for it.
Welcome to the wonderful world of acapella and Pentatonix. They are extraordinary singers and people. They have a huge catalog and hAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR TWELVE YEARS SINGING ALL GENRA FROM RAP TO GOSPEL yOU'VE PROBABLY HEARD THEM AT cHRISTMAS. BECAUSE THEIR cHRISTMAS MUSIC IS PLAYUED ON THE RADIO. ENJOY!
I love seeing someone react to Pentatonix, especially when they first hear Avi or Mitch stretch their range. Check out her "Avi face" at 5:11 for a priceless example.
Impossible not to groove to this mashup, isn't it......two thumbs up!!! And, don't worry, despite living under a rock, you are remarkably, still flawless.
Pretty much everything Pentatonix does is gold, and it's a rabbit hole worth exploring. Their original "Love Again" was somewhat like this one and rivals the Daft Punk Medley for my favorite. Their cover of Radioactive (by Imagine Dragons) with Lindsey Stirling is fantastic. If you haven't already, you should definitely check out Home Free (another excellent acapella group), and Teddy Swims.
Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole. They are my absolute favorite group. Please react to more!!! Hallelujah, Sound of Silence, Mad World just to name a few. They also have a ton of original music. ❤❤❤
Great reaction! Must hears are: Hallelujah, Imagine, Sound Of Silence, Can’t Sleep Love, Sing, Gold, Mary Did You Know, Bohemian Rhapsody, Cracked, The Evolution Of Music, The Evolution Of Michael Jackson, 90’s Dance Medley, just to name a few. Two things you will hear if you take this journey are “Mitch Slapped” and “they don’t do covers they do upgrades”. This group is phenomenal and I hope you keep going with PTX.
💕💓💗💯Daft Punk are awesome. Pentatonix are also FAB. My all time fav by them is gonna bring everyone JOY..... search.... Evolution of Beyoncé - Pentatonix
Three went to High School together - Scott, Kirstie and Mitch. They won the Sing Off in 2011...mad race to find beat-boxer Kevin and bass Avi...they joined the night before the Sing Off. They've won 3 Grammys and just got a star on The Hollywood Walk Of Fame. I'd venture they're the most popular a capella in the world.
Thank you! Thank you! Glad ur doing PTX. I saw them live a few years back. Unreal live. And some of their video's are live. I do not know if I mention this but do their other covers. They are so good. Won 3 Grammys & was nominated for another one. I tried checking if any other Acapella group has won any Grammy's. Could not find one. Daft Punk is awesome! Check out their covers of " The Prayer " " Amazing Grace " " Sound of Silence " " 90's Medley " " Jolene - by Dolly Parton & PTX together. And lets not forget " Hallelujah " They all will blow ur mine how good they are.
Thanks for a great reaction… It’s morning in Denmark and a good one after seeing your reaction. I heard PTX in 2021 for the first time and I had the same wauw feeling you did 😃
You are now a Pentaholic. Welcome to the acapella universe owned by three groups, this one, Voiceplay, the theater kids of acapella, and Home Free, the country guys. You are at the beginning of a LONG and winding road, but it is tremendous fun.
If you liked this one, you're gonna love their 90s dance medley. It's more recent (relatively) and the bass (Avi) was replaced by Matt, but they're just as impressive. They have done so many great covers and originals, you might want to start a playlist. Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole. May the Pentaholics be with you.

@@MaddyReactions The PTX performance of Hallelujah makes grown alpha men cry. The performance is incredible. Bump Hallelujah to the top of your list. Seriously. You won't be disappointed. Seriously.
PTX on how to win a Grammy for 400 dollars...lol incredible vocal talent. welcome to the deepest rabbit hole in musicdom. They have been together 12 years now, three of them have been friends since middle and high school.
Great reaction Maddy! Welcome to acapella music. There are at least two other groups on youtube performing unbelievable music with no instruments. Hopefully this journey takes you to Voiceplay and Home Free also. I have a favorite but all three groups are amazing!
Hi Maddy, thanks for taking up the suggestion I & others made on your reaction to Disturb's Sound of Silence ( & possibly elsewhere). Glad you liked it so much & so glad you got to be surprised they were doing it all a capella, that look people get is priceless and you had it too. I mentioned their fans would show up quickly, and so they have (& are mostly as kind as I said they'd be). I know it's not ALL about the numbers, but I am curious to know if the current 18.9K showing for your channel has gotten a sudden bump or if you're adding subscribers rather steadily? In any case, welcome to the rabbit hole and enjoy the ride!
Thank you so much for reacting to PTX! I'm hoping you'll venture down the PTX rabbit hole. Their talent is endless! They don't do covers, they do upgrades and their original works are great too! Many genres to choose from!
I was late to the party, too; I only discovered Pentatonix last September. Pentatonix is the only a cappella band that's ever won a Grammy, except they've actually won three ("Daft Punk Medley" was their first Grammy winner). They're also the only a cappella band with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Pentatonix recommendations: • "Imagine" (the official video) • "The Prayer" • "Bohemian Rhapsody" (the official video) • "Run To You" (an original, written by Avi and Kevin) • "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" (their second Grammy winner) • "Jolene" (a collaboration with Dolly Parton, and their third Grammy winner) • "O Come All Ye Faithful" • "Sound of Silence" • "Hallelujah" Pentatonix appeared on _The Sing-Off_ throughout the third (2011) season, eventually winning it. All of those performances are still available on UA-cam and are well worth watching, preferably in order, and preferably including the synopsis at the beginning, the judges' comments, and whatever interviews they may have done afterwards. If you have trouble finding them just respond to this comment with a request for help and I can give you links. I also recommend checking out SuperFruit (a vlog that Scott and Mitch produced on a weekly basis for several years) and their individual channels: • SuperFruit: youtube.com/@sup3rfruit • Kirstin: youtube.com/@KirstinMaldonadoOfficial • Scott: youtube.com/@scotthoying • Mitch: youtube.com/@MesserWeb • Kevin: youtube.com/@kolusola • Avi: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic (Note: If it's funny and it's on SuperFruit, stick around after the obvious end of the video. They frequently appended a blooper reel.)
Home Fry here. No question of which group is better but give credit where credit is due. They knocked this one out of the park check out their The Prayer and Amazing Grace. Two other ones are Bohemian Rhapsody and sound of Silence. Home Free sings circles around them, but they are truly talented in their own right.
Glad you enjoyed the PTX Daft Punk medley/mashup! They have a large catalog (200+ songs), so you can just browse through to find something you like, or I'm sure you've already gotten bunches of recommendations already! If you start reacting to Pentatonix regularly, the fans (Pentaholics) will flock to your channel!
Welcome to the world of vocal artistry! And: better late to the show than never! PTX is a rabbit hole! Most famous: „Hallelujah“, „Sound of Silence“, „Amazing Grace“. Hidden Gems: „Rather be“, „Havanna“, „Say something“. world famous: their take on „Bohemian Rhapsody“!
I think one of their most beautiful creations is their rendition of "Mary Did You Know", perhaps best saved for the Christmas season. And when that season comes don't miss Home Free's astonishing a cappella Christmas songs (e.g. "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "O Holy Night"). Pentatonix and Home Free won their respective seasons of NBC's "The Sing Off", and the groups are good friends. In fact Pentatonix's Avi Kaplan collaborated with Home Free on their "Ring of Fire" video. He and Tim Foust bring some serious bass.
Pentatonix History…..composed by Alan Freeman They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an acappella group could sell records. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They are the only acapella group with a star! Things you need to know because if you get these wrong “Pentaholics” will come after you with pitch forks and torches!
Pentatonix is part of the "Big Three" of American acapella bands (and the most popular overall). The other two are Home Free and Voiceplay. All three bands are incredible, and do a wide range of musical genres. That being said, Pentatonix tends to be a bit more pop, Home Free tends to be more country/blues, and Voiceplay are the "theatre kids, and tend to do video games/disney/rock). It really comes down to taste. I like them all, but after several years of listening, I'm into Voiceplay the most. But you can't go wrong with any of these bands. You'll have many, many hours of enjoyment listening to all of them should you so choose.
Love PTX, this was actually one of the first videos I ever saw of them and had me hooked and I love all of their music. That being said, (as this is the first time I've found your channel) if you have not seen it, you really, REALLY, need to check out Voiceplay's Oogie Boogie's song. 3 best bass singers in the world are Tim, (it's Tim right? I'm terrible with names) from Home Free, Geoff Castalucci from Voiceplay and Avi from PTX.
I know I am a bit late but you have one of the best reaction I have ever seen. You are smiling the entire video. You probably know they won a Grammy for this. But what most people do not know is that because Pentatonix and this song, the Grammys changed a category to include A cappella as part of a Grammy category. They won the first one ever awarded. Pentatonix literally changed music.
You have to react to more of their songs, as they are really amazing. And yes, they have been around since '11 and the 3 higher voices has known each other from school. The bass and the beatboxer joined in '11, although about 5-6 years ago they had a change. Avi(the bass) left(on good terms) and they got a new one in, who has equally good, deep bass voice. They are still around, and I think they were on a tour last year, If I remember correctly from what I recently read myself. Alsot recent years they have made their own music and not just covers...
Watch the sound of silence or for a Christmas song the grinch. These guys are fab! Whether it is when they had Avi or Matt both of them brought something amazing to the group.
The gold standard for acapella groups. Three Grammy awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Subbed for more PTX reactions.
So amazing!!
They also have a Christmas movie coming out soon :)

Love it! They are so talented!!
@@Miobambino Sure do/ I edit it when I have new info and save it on my PC.
Amazing!
So good!!
I would add voiceplay for the sacred acapella trio. Really matter of a taste, which one you like the most. I am personally obsessed with PTX, especially their original music.
@@minaolenella869agree!!
I second the Hallelujah masterpiece!
Both groups are fantastic.

😂
You have no idea of the rabbit hole you're about fall into with these guys. They are incredible.
I’m excited!!
Their 90's Dance Covers medley is by far my fav so good!!!!
Oooh 😮
I agree🤩
Welcome to the PTX Rabbit Hole of Transcendent Talent! Each member has an amazing vocal range, their cover + original arrangements are exciting/poignant/inspiring/fill in the ___, their videos are thoughtful + engaging. Plus they all bring such joy to their craft!😍
Wow!
I bet it was amazing!!
Lovely!! 💖
Kevin and Avi are unbeatable in this. Kevin usually gets all the credit but Avi is 50% of this drive.
So amazing!!
💖💖💖
You have just discovered the best in the acapella world! Their catalog is over 200 songs (including originals) and this will not be the last time your mind is blown!! Subscribed for more Pentatonix!!!
Definitely!!! 💖💖💖
I loved this performance!!
I loved your reaction enough to subscribe. Keep the reactions coming and more will watch.
Hi welcome to the incredible talent and innovation that is PTX. They are so amazingly talented. We who love them are called Pentaholics.
Suggest you next try their
Cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, Or perhaps. Hallelujah or Sound of Silence . 90s dance melody is very fun and their evolution videos are great
My favorites are evolution of Micheal Jackson and Evolution of Rhianna.
Awesome!!
Your looks of awe, joy and shock were wonderful. Listen to everything especially Hallelujah.
Yes! Thank you! 💖
If you are a fan of EDM they have an original EDM style song called Love Again. You will not believe there are no instruments.
Love Again was on the same EP at Daft Punk.
The costumes in that song are crazy as well.
"Love Again," yes!!!
Oooh!!
Music truly is the universal language, you may not understand a single word but it still impacts you to your core

The first time I heard/watched this masterpiece I had to remind myself to breathe! Look forward to more Pentatonix!

Brilliant!
And oh so true.
PTX can perform pitch bends, phase-shifting, and EQ sweeps all organically.
I think I have seen every single reaction to this brilliant track and yours just adds to the lustre about this band. IMHO Pentatonix are THE accapella band and this is one of thier finest tracks. Love to see you review their version of Hallelujah, that'll make you cry for sure.
Oooh! Sounds like a must!
They have over 20 million subscribers, and more then 5.5 billion views combined. They are huge. I'm what you call one their Pentaholics fans out of millions of us.
Amazing!! 💖🤗
Oooh!! I bet Jolene is so good!!
@@MaddyReactionsJolene is good. However, their other Grammy winner, Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy, will blow your mind.
@@dwfarr YESSSSSSS
@@MaddyReactionsYou are not wrong. 😃 Interestingly, it's the first time Dolly won a Grammy for Jolene. She was nominated twice for performance in '75 and '76 but didn't win. Then along comes her collaboration with Pentatonix in 2017 and they all win Best Country Duo/Group Performance.
@@dwfarr I totally agree. For those who don't know, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy was composed as part of the score for the Nutcracker ballet. So, a musical piece without words performed by a group without instruments, go figure!!!
Pentatonix has the world's best Kevin and he really stands out in this cover.

They’re really quite amazing.
First they have an ethos of giving their fans real (unprocessed) music in the studio and on stage. Then, no bad words or songs that disrespect anyone. Lastly, when thanking their fans from stage, they frequently tear up.
I just love them.
They’re so much talent + compassion wrapped into one group!!
So awesome!!
That’s awesome!
Nitpick: The minimum for Sing-off was 4
WELCOME! More Pentatonix, and Home Free, and Dimash! Enjoy these magical music rabbit holes. Subscribed!
💖
This is one of my favorites! It shows off their amazing talent individuality and as a group!
Definitely!!
PTX is just amazing at all genres...subbed for more PTX...great reaction
Awesome! Thank you!
The elite acapella groups are such a fun rabbit hole.
Pentatonix (PTX)
Bohemian rhapsody got Queen's Brian May attention when they released it
Their 90s dance medley is stunning how it is all vocal but could be played in a club
Their grammy for sugar plum fairy was first time an acapella group tackled a symphonic piece. Voiceplay followed their lead with an amazing acapella version of Hall of the Mountain King
💖
They won their first Grammy for this song/arrangement.
Wow!
It's always fun seeing people react to PTX, but seeing a Daft Punk fan react to this song FIRST makes me so happy to see.
🩷🩷🩷☺️
There is a reason this arrangement won a Grammy! Love watching first time reactors.
3 great bands/groups to check out. Pentatonix of course, home free and voiceplay. A great bunch of people.
Oooh
I remember seeing this video of them years ago (my first exposure to PTX). I was awestruck immediately!
I love it!
welcome to acapella world :) they are on the top for many years
So good!!!
After they won the sing off, the record label ended up dropping them. They made this video in Kevin and Avi's apartment. It cost them $400.00 to make and they won their first Grammy for it.
That is so amazing!!
Technically, they won the Grammy for the arrangement, not the recording or the video.
I saw them in Nashville opening for Kelly Clarkson. This was their closer and it was just as good LIVE! Best Acapella group on the planet!
ENJOY!
Definitely 💖
I love seeing someone react to Pentatonix, especially when they first hear Avi or Mitch stretch their range. Check out her "Avi face" at 5:11 for a priceless example.
Impossible not to groove to this mashup, isn't it......two thumbs up!!! And, don't worry, despite living under a rock, you are remarkably, still flawless.
100%!!
Aww thank you ☺️
Pretty much everything Pentatonix does is gold, and it's a rabbit hole worth exploring.
I bet!
Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole. They are my absolute favorite group. Please react to more!!! Hallelujah, Sound of Silence, Mad World just to name a few. They also have a ton of original music. ❤❤❤
🐰
Love that you have reacted to my two favs: PTX and AJ! I can die happy now!
Looking forward to all your PTX reactions!
Heheh 💖💖💖
They're amazing , they sound just the same live too it's insane 😍
I bet!!
I will check it out 💖
great reaction! 20k will come sooon!! They won a grammy for this!
So awesome!
@@MaddyReactions they come out with a new song on the 11th
All right! Watch their 90's Dance Medley as well!!! They won a Grammy for this...
Awesome 💖
The the three higher singers have been together since high school.. the group started as Pentatonix on the Sing Off tv show in 2011.
So cool!
💕💓💗💯Daft Punk are awesome. Pentatonix are also FAB. My all time fav by them is gonna bring everyone JOY..... search.... Evolution of Beyoncé - Pentatonix
100%!!
That’s awesome!
Thank you!
So amazing!!
Thanks for a great reaction…
It’s morning in Denmark and a good one after seeing your reaction. I heard PTX in 2021 for the first time and I had the same wauw feeling you did 😃
This song is just flat out fun!!!
Agreed!
You are now a Pentaholic. Welcome to the acapella universe owned by three groups, this one, Voiceplay, the theater kids of acapella, and Home Free, the country guys. You are at the beginning of a LONG and winding road, but it is tremendous fun.
Oooh exciting!!
You just stumbled upon the FASTEST way to grow your channel. Pentaholics are loyal and will absolutely flock to your channel. Keep up the PTX
Aww thanks!
Oooh! Awesome!
YOU JUST LISTENED TO THE NUMBER ONE ACAPELLA GROUP IN THE WORLD🌎.
🎵🎙🎶
Epic!!
Great reaction 👏. These guys are the best. Go through their playlist and I'm sure you'll like everything you see. They are amazing.

@@MaddyReactions, please do! I subscribed in the hope that you do explore this wonderful group.
YESSS
Great reaction Maddy! Welcome to acapella music. There are at least two other groups on youtube performing unbelievable music with no instruments. Hopefully this journey takes you to Voiceplay and Home Free also. I have a favorite but all three groups are amazing!
Thanks for the tips!
Great reaction! New sub here for your Pentatonix journey, they’re PHENOMENAL 🔥❤️🙌
Yes!! Thanks so much 💖
These guys are soooo good. They just make great stuff, always. So freakin cool :)
They won their first of several grammys for this.
They are the best ❤
Definitely
Steadily growing, faster and faster! Super appreciative! I really like their music, so I’m very excited to delve deeper!
Thank you so much for reacting to PTX! I'm hoping you'll venture down the PTX rabbit hole. Their talent is endless! They don't do covers, they do upgrades and their original works are great too! Many genres to choose from!
definitely!!
Hallelujah they did has over 700 million views, so you know it's good.
Wow!
YOU PROBABLY HEARD ONE OF THEIR SONGS ON THE RADIO BUT DID NOT KNOW IT WAS THEM. they were the winners of the Sing Off season 3 back in 2011
Oh wow!
Pentatonix recommendations:
• "Imagine" (the official video)
• "The Prayer"
• "Bohemian Rhapsody" (the official video)
• "Run To You" (an original, written by Avi and Kevin)
• "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" (their second Grammy winner)
• "Jolene" (a collaboration with Dolly Parton, and their third Grammy winner)
• "O Come All Ye Faithful"
• "Sound of Silence"
• "Hallelujah"
Pentatonix appeared on _The Sing-Off_ throughout the third (2011) season, eventually winning it. All of those performances are still available on UA-cam and are well worth watching, preferably in order, and preferably including the synopsis at the beginning, the judges' comments, and whatever interviews they may have done afterwards. If you have trouble finding them just respond to this comment with a request for help and I can give you links.
I also recommend checking out SuperFruit (a vlog that Scott and Mitch produced on a weekly basis for several years) and their individual channels:
• SuperFruit: youtube.com/@sup3rfruit
• Kirstin: youtube.com/@KirstinMaldonadoOfficial
• Scott: youtube.com/@scotthoying
• Mitch: youtube.com/@MesserWeb
• Kevin: youtube.com/@kolusola
• Avi: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
(Note: If it's funny and it's on SuperFruit, stick around after the obvious end of the video. They frequently appended a blooper reel.)
That’s awesome!!
Subscribed for more PTX reactions!! Loved the reaction, your joy was palpable
Oohhh!! 😍
90s dance medley or Bohemian Rhapsody should be NEXT!
🌸
Home Fry here. No question of which group is better but give credit where credit is due. They knocked this one out of the park check out their The Prayer and Amazing Grace. Two other ones are Bohemian Rhapsody and sound of Silence.
Home Free sings circles around them, but they are truly talented in their own right.
😯
Glad you enjoyed the PTX Daft Punk medley/mashup! They have a large catalog (200+ songs), so you can just browse through to find something you like, or I'm sure you've already gotten bunches of recommendations already! If you start reacting to Pentatonix regularly, the fans (Pentaholics) will flock to your channel!
💖
Welcome to the world of vocal artistry! And: better late to the show than never! PTX is a rabbit hole! Most famous: „Hallelujah“, „Sound of Silence“, „Amazing Grace“. Hidden Gems: „Rather be“, „Havanna“, „Say something“. world famous: their take on „Bohemian Rhapsody“!
🤗💖💖💖
I think one of their most beautiful creations is their rendition of "Mary Did You Know", perhaps best saved for the Christmas season. And when that season comes don't miss Home Free's astonishing a cappella Christmas songs (e.g. "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "O Holy Night"). Pentatonix and Home Free won their respective seasons of NBC's "The Sing Off", and the groups are good friends. In fact Pentatonix's Avi Kaplan collaborated with Home Free on their "Ring of Fire" video. He and Tim Foust bring some serious bass.
Ooh!! Yes definitely going to delve into that one for christmas!
Pentatonix History…..composed by Alan Freeman
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
The founding members are:-
Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an acappella group could sell records.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They are the only acapella group with a star!
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong “Pentaholics” will come after you with pitch forks and torches!
Oooh
Oooh!
So good!!!
I’d recommend Mary Did You Know and Hallelujah. Both terrific songs IMO.
💖💖💖
Just subbed for more PTX please! And start a Pentatonix Playlist... The Pentaholics will love you for it!
💖
Subscribed for more Pentatonix. Recommend their original, Happy Now.
Oooh
I know I am a bit late but you have one of the best reaction I have ever seen. You are smiling the entire video. You probably know they won a Grammy for this. But what most people do not know is that because Pentatonix and this song, the Grammys changed a category to include A cappella as part of a Grammy category. They won the first one ever awarded. Pentatonix literally changed music.
Thank you 🩷
Three of them have been together since Junior High I cannot imagine what their music teacher felt like
Just repeating "oh... my... God" repeatedly is exactly the correct reaction to this video.
😂😂😂
Ive never seen your content before but this vid led me to you and i love your vibe!! Also, GURL you are GORGEOUS! ❤️🔥
I like the Kanye - Stronger hook that they did. This is amazing.
Huh? Lol
Just subbed for more PTX. I recommend Hallelujah, Imagine (video not live for the visual effects), I just called to say I love you, and Can’t Hold Us
Ooh! Lovely!
That is awesome! So much to discover
Watch the sound of silence or for a Christmas song the grinch. These guys are fab! Whether it is when they had Avi or Matt both of them brought something amazing to the group.
Most definitely
PTX is the best. I hope you watch more Pentatonix. They have original music as well as covers.
Definitely will!
