- Advertising: the rattling of a stick in a swill-bucket? Welcome to the show where the stick rattles back: The Hard Sell. Adverts from history, treated with the respect they deserve.
This episode: British Airways. The World's Favourite Airline, largely because they said so. And younger than you might have thought. Here's the story of their self-image from their merger out of the two competing British airlines, through their patriotic blonde era with the famous face of Roz Hanby, up to the even more famous face floating in the salt flats of Utah. From package holidays to yuppie Avalon, here's how they got us to fly the flag.

Not sure if you ever heard about the lawsuit around the BA space advert. The Beastie Boys were in a cinema in NYC and saw the ad, realised their song “Beastie Revolution” was in it and they sued. Think they got $40,000 for it ($10,000 each) and one member used it to buy a Roland 808 and was one of the funding sources behind their first album.
a The Hard Sell dedicated to advertiser ripping off artists and other creatives may be a good idea to keep in your back pocket
Ah plenty to talk about here but I'll skip all of my boring tidbits to say a great job Matthew, I always seem to get very teary-eyed whenever I watch the "face" advert, probably because it reminds me of BA at their peak and of course my own youth. One thing which I don't know if you know but in 2007 Saachi recreated the "face" advert in a not quite shot for shot remake for the short lived business class only airline "SilverJet" I bet the bosses at BA Towers were fuming at the time :)
That advert is featured in the episode on Hugh Hudson.
@@applemask Ah my mistake, I must have missed that one as have been away quite a bit recently. I'll grab a brew and watch it :)
