In 1979, the Soviets had ill-suited uniforms and inferior fighting tactics, and found it impossible to defeat the popular Afghan guerrilla army. They had underestimated their enemy and lacked the forces to win.
I made the mistake of reading the comments.....again. it's amazing how many tactical geniuses and historians tune in to UA-cam. These lumaix vids are appreciated

After the British army getting some lands and defeating some battles against the Argentinians, The Argentinians surrender which gave a great victory to the British without gaining more casualties.
@@elsalvedorven5546 What does any of that has to do with the video?
You can tell this is a British documentary, not just from the narrators accent. When he spoke of the soviets left map's behind that showed where the mines were, he then put a little dig in by saying, unlike Argentina in the Falklands war;)
michael swords yep good reference there to the Falklands war hahaha

The USA has been founded with a war and have been in peacetime only for like 25 years since its birth in 1776.
the 100 years war between England and France, of course warfare was different, so having that long of a war nowadays would be completely different
Now it has been at war for 40 years.
Who's watching after the withdrawal of US forces
its clear no one win war in Afghanistan even USA. I thinks USA army just waste his time in Afghanistan.
His? Don't you mean their time The US is not a person but a country
The Taliban will lose the war because they have to come to us and fight, early on in the war we tried to take the mountains and failed. However, the most important parts of Afghanistan are under NATO and ANA control. Do you figure they have the manpower and weaponry to even make one attack work? I don't.
Powder Hungry they will be obliterated here, all of the civilians we have we right to carries and all the gun clubs here that practice for stuff like that and not to mention we have to many gangs here for any country to try and invade them boys would tear they ass up to defend the land and that’s for certain

its a well known fact that Gromov and his staff had spent the last night in Afghanistan on the soviet side of the friendship bridge ,they were flown back in to Afghanistan to join the departing convoy to be on the last armoured troop carrier over the bridge ,a stunt for the cameras and media , most ranking officers did the same façade as they feared for their lives.
@Sky Forever good one
That would not be the first or last scripted heroic war-time documentary scene in history.
Wagging the dog is timeless.
America was fighting against Russia in Afghanistan, not Russia against Afghanistan. Type 'Soviet war in Afghanistan' in wikipedia and read background (first item).
Soviets were invited by government of DRA -- Democratic Republic of Afghanistan to back up Afgan military against opposition. But at that time Afgan army guys couldn't grab their butt with two hands at the same time. And Soviets got deeper and deeper in conflict.
Urban population was very friendly to Russians. During the war Soviets built strong infrastructure
like gydro electric power plant , that I guess , still producing electricity today , many schools, colleges, government buildings, roads , tunnels, bridges, aqueducts, airports. A lot of afgan people today want
"Shuravi" to come back. Even many of Mujahideen guys, talk about Soviet solders with respect.

Look: the Red Army defeated the powerful war machine of Nazi Germany, but ended up being humiliated by a band of ragged guerrillas in the sands of the Afghan desert!
The Soviet misadventure was largely due to the inhospitable terrain and a dedicated Afghan mojahideen guerrillas supported by US weapons.
In some cases when soviet soldiers captured Chinese copies of their ammo and small arms they were often recycled, 7.62 ammo was recycled as were RPG's and even DSHK's
In one story I heard, A BTR driver used a captured Norinco Type-56 under folder as a back up weapon because AK-47 ammo was plentiful

"The Graveyard of Empires"
or just a Graveyard
My heart goes out to the Afghan people. Their country (and once my forefathers') is where the holier than thou powers came to settle scores. I long to go there at some stage and serve its people by easing their lives in some way but the love of my child and family have now made me too scared to risk it.
No one even mentions the 100s of 1000s that died because some power wanted to destroy some other power. And now hearing lessons of morality and human rights from them is simply sickening.
haha hey its me from the future
It's a war the Russians could never win, and another lesson to America and its allies who boast ther might but also withdrew tail between their legs. little do they know the might of God as mentioned in the Quran wherein the Khurasan will start marching towards them for a final victory.

Long live Afghanistan
Слава Советским воинам !
Very cool information
Great documentary!! ;
Some empires have sent a small contingent of forces to Afghanistan, stayed there for some years battling the tribals and then left when they realized they had nothing to gain from that hellhole.
If Afghanistan had a coastline which offered access to Indian Ocean, the Soviets would have wiped out most of the resistance and stayed there. Similarly if there was oil most of the Taliban would be finished off by Afghan militias armed and funded by US and there wouldn't be any plan for leaving.
They’re called rare earths idiot
And now the American have gone through the same story
Soviets are far away from Indian ocean, ignorant. And there navy isn't that powerful. This logic could work with Americans though.
Soviets were worst
Mines should be illegal WTF. after war they lay in the dirt to clam lives of civilians.😥
Christopher Kleinbach It is illegal according to International Law. Millions of mine have been destroyed across globe. However there is still some because its costs 1000$ remove a single mine
As opposed to regular war devices which just kill civilians while the military is there....
nice footage
Watching this compared to 2022. These were the last days of Russia. Now In Ukraine the equipment is from the same era. They have nothing
Afghans with their strong Islamic faith which makes them difficult to conquer
No army in world can defeat them.
3:53 Deja Vu
Very good story with good fights. Too bad the napalm was never employed there
HK Adler Too bad? Napalm is abnormally cruel compared to most weapons. Interesting how the U.S. was happy to use it on villages of civilians and the Soviets refused to use such a torturous weapon.
Yeah, so they started killing Afghan civilians with rockets instead of napalm, totaly not torturous...
I mean, the footage clearly shows usage of phosphorous ammunitions, but hey, at least it's not napalm... or what? I'm pretty sure it's just that rocks don't burn as the sole reason for not deploying either en masse. That both were used, whenever effective, is quite likely. Whenever not, well, cluster bombs are just as merciless. Only thing clearly not employed, would be chemical weapons, like agent orange (which itself may only be a defoliant, but it was tainted with extremely toxic and mutagenic contaminants that chronically endangers the population wherever it's used).
those phosphorus munitions were used to blind infrared trackers not to burn combatants
ISI is the hero of this war
This happens when powerful countries feel superior.
If you don't know who Ahmad Shah Massoud is, In this occasion, I present
him, because he is the character that i love and respect so much, he
was born in Panjshir in (1953- 2001), Tajik (Aryan) political and
military leader. He dedicated his life to the dream of bringing
democracy and independence to Greater Khorasan/ Afghanistan. He fought
against Soviet occupation and the nickname of "Lion of Panjshir“ among
his followers as he successfully resisted the Soviets from taking
Panjshir Valley 9 times. He fought against Osama Bin Laden. He fought
against the oppression of the Taliban Afghans and talibans Pakistanis,
in fact he was the only remaining opposition commander against the
totalitarian Taliban afghan regime. He fought for the equality of women.
He was a warrior for peace. You can find more than 100 books, 100 songs
in Farsi, and more than 10 songs in Italian, French, English about him.
He said "Death is better than life in humiliation".
we are not all afghans in Afghansitan, because the word afghan refer juste to pashton
5:19 Wow, I am surprised they left the maps of the minefields behind
Gromov was one of the most highky decorated soldiers in Russian history, and serves as governor of the Moscow oblast.
Geez, this commentator seemed more interested at taking shots at the U.S. than he does offering an objective narrative. He even seems to almost justify the invasion at the 3:00 mark. He incorrectly dismisses the impact the introduction of American Stinger missiles had on the Soviets, and how they turned their thoughts towards withdrawal in place of continuation. The introduction of this weapon changed the entire landscape of the war and how it was to be fought, it's that simple.
....or you are just an American fanboy and should not speak when you actually have no idea...?
i think, we europian and other people, simply have nothing to lose there. Finally someone like Gromov, could understand that and ended the useless war

+MrAwesomesauce2 true true US cant be fucked any more we destroyed as much as we want
+MrAwesomesauce2 The US "won" in Afghanistan only because you had the support of the Afghan people and the mujahideen! Who do you think makes the Afghan government, the police and the army? The men you see in this video are still your allies. The taleban are nothing, they are a weak bunch of foreigners, but even with them you lost over 3000 men. If we go back to the 80s and if you replace the Soviets with the nato and america, then the americans would even suffer a worse defeat than the one in Vietnam.
+shahafghan9 Agree wrora..............
+shahafghan9 No America would have still kicked their ass and the only reason the afghans won here is because America helped them.
+MrAwesomesauce2 the trouble with all this is we try to help the Afghans but all that happens is the country is so corrupt that the aid that we send in get stolen along the way so the Afghans don't see any change to there way of life and then we no longer are seen as friends trying to help but more as occupiers and there is no country in history that hate's being occupied like Afghanistan but with the right strategy and resources we could have been out of Afghanistan years ago but we did not do it and now we paid for it

The tactical withdrawal,, folks that’s code for retreat and defeat ✌️
Afghanistan is a country that has isolated regions that allow the country to not really have an identity. Along with that, poor infrastructure, extreme poverty, and xenophobic attitudes among people in the countryside stall any kind of central government from earning the trust of the people. The only way that I see an end to conflict is the Durand Line abolished, and the establishment of a Pashtun state in southern Afghanistan and Western Pakistan, which will never happen
