In 1979, the Soviets had ill-suited uniforms and inferior fighting tactics, and found it impossible to defeat the popular Afghan guerrilla army. They had underestimated their enemy and lacked the forces to win.

You can tell this is a British documentary, not just from the narrators accent. When he spoke of the soviets left map's behind that showed where the mines were, he then put a little dig in by saying, unlike Argentina in the Falklands war;)

Soviets were invited by government of DRA -- Democratic Republic of Afghanistan to back up Afgan military against opposition. But at that time Afgan army guys couldn't grab their butt with two hands at the same time. And Soviets got deeper and deeper in conflict.
Urban population was very friendly to Russians. During the war Soviets built strong infrastructure
like gydro electric power plant , that I guess , still producing electricity today , many schools, colleges, government buildings, roads , tunnels, bridges, aqueducts, airports. A lot of afgan people today want
"Shuravi" to come back. Even many of Mujahideen guys, talk about Soviet solders with respect.

Ghulab's brothers name was Ghoul. He was a highly revered Muj. commander. When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan ,Ghoul was in a Afghan prison. He had been convicted of manslaughter. Ghoul had killed a man from another village, That he was having a dispute with. His prowess as a Muj. fighter was such that he was released in order for him to command Muj. In the fight against the Soviet's .
Ghulab' was around 12 yrs Old at the time. He was not big enough to operate a AK. RPG etc. So a platform was fabricated that allowed him to operate a DHSK. From a fixed position.
Not a lot of people know that one of the reasons that the Taliban was hesitent to take M.L. from the village by use of extreme force. Was that Ghulabs family was highly respected. Their father was a highly respected Afghan too.

Some empires have sent a small contingent of forces to Afghanistan, stayed there for some years battling the tribals and then left when they realized they had nothing to gain from that hellhole.
If Afghanistan had a coastline which offered access to Indian Ocean, the Soviets would have wiped out most of the resistance and stayed there. Similarly if there was oil most of the Taliban would be finished off by Afghan militias armed and funded by US and there wouldn't be any plan for leaving.

I mean, the footage clearly shows usage of phosphorous ammunitions, but hey, at least it's not napalm... or what? I'm pretty sure it's just that rocks don't burn as the sole reason for not deploying either en masse. That both were used, whenever effective, is quite likely. Whenever not, well, cluster bombs are just as merciless. Only thing clearly not employed, would be chemical weapons, like agent orange (which itself may only be a defoliant, but it was tainted with extremely toxic and mutagenic contaminants that chronically endangers the population wherever it's used).

Geez, this commentator seemed more interested at taking shots at the U.S. than he does offering an objective narrative. He even seems to almost justify the invasion at the 3:00 mark. He incorrectly dismisses the impact the introduction of American Stinger missiles had on the Soviets, and how they turned their thoughts towards withdrawal in place of continuation. The introduction of this weapon changed the entire landscape of the war and how it was to be fought, it's that simple.

Should Afghans suffer all the time?
People of the World please leave Afghanistan as it is.
No one will be succeeded in Afghanistan. We are not strong but we must fight for our country. May be it sounds bad but this is what Afghans are.
Note"-there was no terorrests when Russian invaded.
There is no Usama ben Laden now in Afghanistan to fight for.
We love all human beings but please stop war in Afghanistan. We love all Westren Countries but stop war in Afghanistan.

+MrAwesomesauce2 The US "won" in Afghanistan only because you had the support of the Afghan people and the mujahideen! Who do you think makes the Afghan government, the police and the army? The men you see in this video are still your allies. The taleban are nothing, they are a weak bunch of foreigners, but even with them you lost over 3000 men. If we go back to the 80s and if you replace the Soviets with the nato and america, then the americans would even suffer a worse defeat than the one in Vietnam.

+MrAwesomesauce2 the trouble with all this is we try to help the Afghans but all that happens is the country is so corrupt that the aid that we send in get stolen along the way so the Afghans don't see any change to there way of life and then we no longer are seen as friends trying to help but more as occupiers and there is no country in history that hate's being occupied like Afghanistan but with the right strategy and resources we could have been out of Afghanistan years ago but we did not do it and now we paid for it

Afghanistan is a country that has isolated regions that allow the country to not really have an identity. Along with that, poor infrastructure, extreme poverty, and xenophobic attitudes among people in the countryside stall any kind of central government from earning the trust of the people. The only way that I see an end to conflict is the Durand Line abolished, and the establishment of a Pashtun state in southern Afghanistan and Western Pakistan, which will never happen

      _____
Correct, nobody beat you, you left on your own just as the U.S. should be doing. The war as far as the U.S. is concerned is an illegal war and should not have been stated in the first place and if it had not been for president Bush and his illegal act of making war, we the U.S. wouldn't be there either.

The only "free fire zone" for the Americans now is the Kabul airport. If I didn't know better, I'd say it's really ironic that the Afghans managed to corral 5,600 US troops into the Kabul airport. A "free fire" zone.
