@@ScotlandsMountains it certainly did help and was enjoyed fully. Keep being you. Had an inversion a while back was indescribable scotland at its best. Safe passage to all those that venture out in our beautiful landscape and don't take it for granted.
Excellent as always! On the night of Friday 1-2 November, I was camping outside our club hut above Coniston in the Lake District. Early in morning I heard a noise just like yours which lasted a surprisingly long time. I don't recall hearing this before. I fdecided it must have been a flock of small birds. Somebody who stayed inside the hut (cottage) almost persuaded me it was a big owl as there's known to be one around. Hearing your recording, I've gone back to the flock of birds theory.
Amazing commitment Murray and awesome summary for the potential to experience an inversion. Beautiful. My experiences have been more luck than judgement. Always magical and very rewarding when leading a group who have never seen such natural wonders as fogbows and broken spectres. Have also experienced the flock of birds syndrome. Usually racing pigeons who rise to avoid the cloud and fast , hence the sudden noise. Fantastic video.
I work offshore, and fog is the same principle, high pressure, cooler air trapped underneath, dew point etc. Instead of mountains...there were the derrick towers of various rigs sticking up above the condensation layer. Surreal.
25:00 My wife and I had exactly this experience on Beinn Sgulaird a few years ago- except we never saw any birds. It was similar weather. Out of nowhere it sounded like loads of wings sweeping overhead- but neither of us saw a thing in clear weather. I always assumed it was a rotor vortex from an airplane wing gradually dropping onto us.
Just incredible. So moving too. It’s about time the BBC snapped this up for TV. Murray is incredible. His narration knowledge and editing is second to non. Can’t believe Murray works full time outside of this.

Murray, there are no words. What an amazing film, and how lucky we are to stay here. We were on the Fife Coast today, and the Isle of May looked like it was floating in the sky!
Absolutely stunning, Murray. Lots of effort, but so worthwhile. As a pilot (now retired) I learned all about adiabatic lapse rates, and have seen some amazing sights from the flight deck, but this brings it all together. Thanks for bringing these views to us.

I caught a nice inversion last winter from Bennachie (Mither Tap) believe it or not. Cloud was at sea level in Aberdeen and I knew it wasn't just haar from the sea so took a chance and got about 5m above it at the summit. Bizarre and magical, though very icy! Had a similar experience at Ben Rinnes a few years ago on New Years Day with settled snow at the summit. Just goes to show that you don't necessarily need great altitude to capture one, as long as you don't mind a bit of a slither up top perhaps.
I've had that same level of inversion on the neighbouring Stob Binnein and sat on the summit in awe for four hours, totally entranced by a changed and changing world with the clouds swirling and revealing as they lowered. The first time you experience a proper inversion is pretty impactful.
I felt your joy as you opened the tent. It was probably a flock of ptarmigan coming into land which you heard. They can fly at some speed, and the noise can be very loud as they steady themselves for landing on the mountain.😊
Might have been but they looked smaller and more agile than Ptarmigan , but then again I only saw them for a fleeting second before they were gone! Thanks for watching ATB Murray

Stunning footage, Murray, and brings back so many memories of inversions, both in Scotland and Cumbria. Particularly loved the backlit drone footage. Re the birds - I've had that quite a few times and particularly at this time of year, there's a lot of birds on the move, migrating, and they often fly at quite a height. Easier for them to navigate above the cloud too, I should think. Usually you can see a flock coming but you were understandably distracted by talking to camera, but from the sound of the calls I could hear on the video, it sounded like geese maybe? If birds sideslip over a hill or a ridge like that, you can often hear the wind in their wings which can be a spooky sound. Anyway, enough waffling. Great stuff as always.
Thanks Irene - yeah it was very strange but from the glimpse of the flock I saw they seem small - medium sized birds flying very quickly and very Agile over the landscape and contours , no idea what they were tho!!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
@@ScotlandsMountains Ah, in that case it sounds more like thrushes (like Blackbirds, Redwings, Song Thrush etc) which are also migrating in their thousands at the minute (arriving from Scandinavia and from Iceland directions). Amazing to catch it like that really. Thanks for all the effort you put into videos.
Had a beautiful inversion a couple of months ago. Was about to do Aonach Eagach. Got to the first munro starting from that infamous house, and over Rannoch Moor there was a sea of clouds, and they were rolling over the hills into Glen Coe. Fantastic.
@@ScotlandsMountains Thanks Murray. A quick update on my comment. Just a day after I watched your video, I did Ben Cruachan, and it just blew my mind, there's no other words to describe it. But this... this is the very last thing on my bucket list. 2025 might just be the year. Thank you for all of the genuine and sincere content you make for the community. Not a product sell or pushing ad revenue. But heartfelt experiences. Keep it up lad!
Wow, so beautiful, thank you for sharing your tips. I have by chance seen a few inversions but now I shall actively look out for the right conditions and hopefully improve my chances. So pleased for you it all went to plan. As for the birds, well you definitely could hear them. They must have been pretty close to you.
hope you get an inversion soon , managed one yesterday again which was alittle higher than this inversion but equally as good! Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Wonderful .Inversion, fogbow, brocken spectre AND a flock of birds masquerading as a passing train! What a morning. Did you get a look at what kind of birds they were? Thankyou for all your outstanding videos.
I wish I had caught them on camera and not just the sound - I o my saw them disappear at speed over the hill. They went past another hiker I met a few minutes earlier and I contacted him on Instagram and he also heard them and was a bit startled ! Never experienced anything like that before TBH Thanks for watching Murray
Absolutely stunning Murray. I do love a cloud inversion. My first and 2nd on the same day I got a cloud inversion. Absolutely loved it. The last one I got was Ben Ledi at the beginning of this year. Brilliant Murray. ATVB Alan
Ding dong Murray. 😎 We were heading up Beinn a' Bhathaich Ard. Ma pal Greg messaged me saying you had nailed the inversion. Sure enough I seen your pic at our summit in the clag. 😭 Well, there was blue sky above us & we had a fog bow & a faint Broken. Ach well eh.
Arghh - sorry Kev - nothing worse than being a few meters short (been there and done that - also what makes it worse is seeing all the photos in the inter web :(( apologies !! Might be something this weekend tho 🙏👍👍
Chasing a temperature inversion on a mountain sounds like an amazing experience! The effort to wake up above the clouds and catch that sunrise must be so worth it when it works out. Thanks for all the tips, really helpful for anyone trying to capture that ‘holy grail’ of hiking moments! 🌄☁
Murry, another fabulous video....the scenery of the temperature inversion is breathing (a word I seem to use on so many of these videos). Your cinematography is superb.....using your cameras to capture the wonders....as a hill walker and camper who doesn't get up to the Highlands as I once did, I really appreciate your time, effort in producing your videos. One thing I would ask of you is, please produce a calendar of your photos.....you must have enough to cover many years....😊😊 Excellent and a joy to watch. Keep safe.
Had ear buds in, that was incredible hearing the birds go by! "What the hell was that?" lol! Spectacular vid, too many incredible views to time stamp like I normally do. Tears in my eyes during several moments, just awestruck, showed David and he enjoyed it too. Great explanations, literally laughed out loud at 23:39 at how people try and clarify to you, "Well Actually..." 😂Thank you for this treat Murray, this is a vid I can see myself revisiting 👋
Thanks Folks - was a grand camp this one - I sometimes get annoyed when people are commenting that "its actually a temp inversion etc etc" makes me smile!!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
The first video I ever watched of yours was you walking up a hill at 4am through fog hoping to see an inversion at the top. It was indeed a spectacular view, I'd never seen anything like it. Spectacular cinematography Murray. Superb.
Amazing Murray and thank you so much for all the hard work you put in to make every one of your videos, I always look forward to them and they are the highlight of my week 👌🤗
You make high level camping look so good yet when I was doing it, it was uncomfortable cold and just a means to an end. You get terrific camera footage. I have been on these mountains twice , once in winter and also in summer. Can remember falling out with a farmer on the way in due to having two dogs going through his farm going onto Tulaichean first then Ardrain and clambering over Stob Binnien to miss a confrontation with the farmer again. Those were the days. Thank you again for bringing it all back to me. Another fabulous video.
ah - that will explain it - couldn't believe the noise - I expected to see a plane or big drone or something it was that loud!!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
@@ScotlandsMountains Thank you for the videos. I really enjoy exploring the Scottish mountains from my sofa! All the more seeing as I can't get out much due to ill health. The sound really does sound like perhaps the sky is falling, which if you are right underneath some of it will be with a certain splattering element. I was also shocked by the forcefulness of it.
Fantastic video again Murray. I’ve had the joy of a cloud inversion on 3 occasions and all 3 on my birthday walk in December . First two were my 40th and 50th birthdays bizarrely.
Another excellent video thanks Murray.. I found the inversion topic very interesting and informative. Your excellent photography highlighted the awesome scenery. What a stunning location. Thanks for sharing.
It paid off, so worth the hard climb. recall an unpleasant climb up Ben challum some yeas back now, it was too hot, cleggs where awful, roddy was about to turn back, but managed to persuade him things will improve as we kept climbing, and the wind picked up, and cleggs no more and relief from the warm day that had passed.Woke up to the most amazing inversion we have encounterted, bar one other time.Your excitement as you see the inversion is totally us, cany wait to get out the tent.lol. This is so inspiring, and thanks for the tips on apps.
nothing beats a good inversion to wake to after a wild camp on the summit - cant wait to get back out in the tent son :) Thanks for watching ATB Murray
I've only experienced this once, on a corbett in Kntail, the top of the cloud was literally lapping at my feet! An amazing experience, I agree that's what it's all about. Fantastic video, made me homesick. Big flocks of birds are surprisingly loud aren't they? 😂
Hi Murray, we heard the birds flying past you on top of the mountain. What an absolute treat. Normally birds fly high above us and we don't hear the noise of their wings flapping. Thank you x
it was a very surreal experience and a first for me - a few have mentioned starlings , maybe they came up high to get some of the warmer weather on the tops!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Fantastic effort taking the chance that it might just clear Murray. Its great to see the sun is still shining during this particularly gloomy November. Stunning scenes up there above the clouds. I was back up Curach Ardrain 5 weeks ago, so was good to see it again in these fine conditions. ATB Derek
Fantastic video Murray. One of nature’s wonders in all its glory. The rising sun over the clouds gave it an ethereal feeling. Well done. Safe journeys. Cheers
it is always a joy - managed to catch a few more yesterday too - might be months or years beofre the conditions clash with a weekend!!lol Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Was lucky enough to get an inversion on the northern Cairngorms this weekend gone. It was stunning with the peaks poking out as we worked our way over the plateau stopping off at Lurchers crag on the way back down. Was thinking while there back to your ridge traverse up from the northern corries a couple of years back. 😊 Some days are special. Needed it.
it was an amazing weekend and some truly exceptional conditions - hoping for more of the same in the coming months - fingers crossed :) Thanks for watching Murray
The birds thing Murray... Migrating waders of some sort, I think. Though perhaps Fieldfare. I'd need to have seen them to pin it down, but I have seen them bolt across high terrain, hugging the profile.
it was the sound that was amazing - very loud wind!! I am just glad I caught them out of the corner of my eye as they were gone in seconds- moving so quickly :) Shame I never caught them on camera - just that sound Thanks for watching Murray
@@ScotlandsMountains Ye, it was very clear. I listened a few times over. Of course, they could have also been racing pigeon..? They fair hare along... speed and a tight flock is their instictive defence against the raptor.
Fantastic video and commentary. You captured the essence of the day for those of us that were there on the day. Andrew 😊 , aye the birds gave me a start when they came overhead 😮
I’ve never experienced anything like that before - was great to meet you and Pepsi on the top. I am glad you also experienced the birds - very strange !! lol
So very grateful, Murray. Unbelievably beautiful all the way through. Yes, heard the Crebain fly over... fantastic LOTR moment. Thank you again and again for all your effort.
Thanks Joan , felt very surreal, others have suggested a murmuration which I have never seen (or heard before) a first for me and very strange and spooky on the top of the mountain! Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Absolutely beautiful - fascinating info about inversions and great tip about the tent on a slope. I usually spend ages trying to get the flattest spot I can find for my tent so I'll definitely try that. As for the weird noise, I have no idea. Spooky. Sounded like a flock of pterodactyls flying past.
Definetely a flock of those for sure - it was very unusual and startled me a little as it was pretty loud - I was expecting a small aircraft to appear from some where !! lol Thanks for watching Murray
Amazing. I’m yet to experience a cloud inversion on a wildcamp. I’m always in the clouds at sunrise. The drone shot at 17:30 was fantastic. Thanks Murray
Nice one 👍 was up on Beinn A Ghlo on Saturday night hoping for an inversion. Also had the wind and rain. Was pitched right at the summit of the middle Munro without any shelter from the wind. Was also in the tent thinking no chance now. Made it that bit more special after not thinking was going to get it and enduring probably the worst night I've had in a tent 😖😄👌
Glad I wasn't the only one suffering the night before - it was pretty wild and not really looking like the inversion was going to happen!1lol so glad it did though Thanks for watching ATB Murray
Fantastic footage, I've yet to experience this on a summit camp/hike. What fantastic views 😍 Ill take some of your advice and download additional apps to help find the best chance of inversion.

I've spent many nights in the hills photographing the stars and I've been lucky enough to have experienced everything from meteor showers to iridium flares. But this... this is the very last thing on my bucket list. 2025 might just be the year. Thank you for all of the genuine and sincere content you make for the community. Not a product sell or pushing ad revenue. But heartfelt experiences. Keep it up lad!
Hope you get out and manage to grab an inversion soon , something really magical about getting above the clouds :)

Lol!!! Bird invasion during a cloud inversion ..... very immersive....😅😂❤
Wow, that was fantastic Murray. Absolutely loved it. Definitely heard the birds, or whatever noise it was!
It was very strange Jules - I am glad I saw the flock otherwise I would have been really freaked out by the noise!!lol

You’ve reminded me of my total eclipse experience in Newquay 1999… the birds went mental flying out to sea in their mad panic to roost 😂
Never experienced anything like that before TBH

Mystic meg ..well played sir ..now can we have next week's lotto please.? X
Absolutely stunning Murray. I do love a cloud inversion. My first and 2nd on the same day I got a cloud inversion. Absolutely loved it. The last one I got was Ben Ledi at the beginning of this year. Brilliant Murray.

Great inversion footage. I was so glad your gamble paid off for you. That pitch did not look flat, I hope it was comfortable.
I see I should wait until the end of the video to comment 😂
haha - it took a bit of doing but I eventually got it nice and comfy :)
Thanks for watching Alasdair :)

@@ScotlandsMountains Aye swithering wether to head oot on Sat. The cloud sheet might just be abit too high. 🤔
Thanks, Murray, for another so well put together film. Always beautiful to look at & interesting 👌. Love those inversions 😍. Thanks for sharing 👍 🎉
Days of inversions and brockens. Special experiences that many people never get to see.
Chasing a temperature inversion on a mountain sounds like an amazing experience! The effort to wake up above the clouds and catch that sunrise must be so worth it when it works out. Thanks for all the tips, really helpful for anyone trying to capture that ‘holy grail’ of hiking moments! 🌄☁
waking in the tent and opening the door to be above the clouds is hard to beat! hope you enjoyed the video

One thing I would ask of you is, please produce a calendar of your photos.....you must have enough to cover many years....😊😊
Excellent and a joy to watch.
Keep safe.
thanks you - very much appreciated - maybe one day I'll get round to doing a calender for sure :)

Thanks Folks - was a grand camp this one - I sometimes get annoyed when people are commenting that "its actually a temp inversion etc etc" makes me smile!!lol

The first video I ever watched of yours was you walking up a hill at 4am through fog hoping to see an inversion at the top. It was indeed a spectacular view, I'd never seen anything like it.
Spectacular cinematography Murray. Superb.

Thanks Ron - sounds like you maybe went in from the south (still to do these ones from that side :):)
What a wonderful video Murray. Scenery absolutely stunning. Makes you glad to be alive and appreciate what we have.ATB
Thanks Julie- it was a fantastic inversion in the morning - sooo good :)

Murray, in ireland 🇮🇪 there's inversions every other weekend but thing is we've no mountains to rise above them 😅 beautiful video wow
Wow wow wow….. that’s some of the best video’s and pictures on the internet. I’ve been fortunate to see one in the Lake District back in De 2012
Thanks Phil - always a great experience when you can capture an inversion for sure :)

Super Murray, thank You.
🙏
That was absolutely awesome Murray.👌❤️
Superb Sir. Yet again. Thank you.
That was wonderful. Really cheered me up and got me out on a little walk!
Fantastic video again Murray. I’ve had the joy of a cloud inversion on 3 occasions and all 3 on my birthday walk in December . First two were my 40th and 50th birthdays bizarrely.
What a wonderful birthday treat for you - always a fantastic experience:)

This is so inspiring, and thanks for the tips on apps.
nothing beats a good inversion to wake to after a wild camp on the summit - cant wait to get back out in the tent son :)

Murray another great video , 😅 can’t wait y😅 get back forres on Dec 1
I've only experienced this once, on a corbett in Kntail, the top of the cloud was literally lapping at my feet! An amazing experience, I agree that's what it's all about. Fantastic video, made me homesick.
Big flocks of birds are surprisingly loud aren't they? 😂
Magic! Flippin ek! Selfies, timelapse, drone and your goodself Murray, class!

Hi Murray, we heard the birds flying past you on top of the mountain. What an absolute treat. Normally birds fly high above us and we don't hear the noise of their wings flapping. Thank you x
it was a very surreal experience and a first for me - a few have mentioned starlings , maybe they came up high to get some of the warmer weather on the tops!lol

Fantastic effort taking the chance that it might just clear Murray. Its great to see the sun is still shining during this particularly gloomy November. Stunning scenes up there above the clouds. I was back up Curach Ardrain 5 weeks ago, so was good to see it again in these fine conditions. ATB Derek

Needed it.
it was an amazing weekend and some truly exceptional conditions - hoping for more of the same in the coming months - fingers crossed :)

Saruman now knows that you are going for the mountain pass. His spies are everywhere.....
The birds thing Murray... Migrating waders of some sort, I think. Though perhaps Fieldfare. I'd need to have seen them to pin it down, but I have seen them bolt across high terrain, hugging the profile.
it was the sound that was amazing - very loud wind!! I am just glad I caught them out of the corner of my eye as they were gone in seconds- moving so quickly :)
Shame I never caught them on camera - just that sound

@@ScotlandsMountains Ye, it was very clear. I listened a few times over. Of course, they could have also been racing pigeon..? They fair hare along... speed and a tight flock is their instictive defence against the raptor.
Used to have Clear Outside but now incompatible with my new Pixel Android. Last time we were on Vorlich (Lomond) it was about 20ft above us too! 🤣🤣
Nothing worse seeing the blue sky tantalizingly close! Hoping to get more inversions as the year continues on :)

Love it! In daytime, it's always sunny above the cloud.
Definetely a flock of those for sure - it was very unusual and startled me a little as it was pretty loud - I was expecting a small aircraft to appear from some where !! lol

Glad I wasn't the only one suffering the night before - it was pretty wild and not really looking like the inversion was going to happen!1lol so glad it did though
