No, the ghanttis were causing problems in Goa (crime, littering , etc.) since they started arriving last century but their misbehaviour was always hushed up by the government and the mainstream media. Social media just makes people more aware of the real nature of ghanttis.
This particular priest asked this question to goan hindus not ghati hindus from maharashtra. We goans very well known that people from maharashtra consider shivaji as their God. But as far as goa is concerned all shivaji's statues are illegally installed in public places an that too during the night. Now tell why they never installed this statues during day time.

Actually Portuguese had decided to install statue of Dada Vaidya over there an even the date was fixed an the statue was also ready but during that time Indian army enterd goa an goa was conquered. Ghatis from maharashtra took that opportunity an installed shivaji's statue instead of Dada Vaidya.
