Honestly. yours are the BEST kind of reactions, because we can tell when music is reaching someone's heart and soul - and then we remember that it did the very same thing to us when we first heard it so many years ago! I may have said it to you before, but please don't feel that you have to save everything for the channel. Go ahead and enjoy the whole movie in one sitting for your own private enjoyment. That is the way it was meant to be experienced!

Levon was an actor too. You might want to check out Coal Miner's Daughter starring a young Sissy Spacek. Levon played her father.
"Raised in rural Kentucky poverty and married at the age of 13, Loretta Lynn (Sissy Spacek) begins writing and singing her own country songs in her early 20s. With the tireless help of her husband Oliver "Mooney" Lynn (Tommy Lee Jones), Loretta rises from local honky-tonks and small-time record deals to national tours and hit singles, befriending her idol Patsy Cline (Beverly D'Angelo) and becoming a country music icon despite the toll stardom takes on her family and her marriage." You'll hear a lot of traditional country music!

The Band is really the perfect name for them because all five guys brought something unique and marvelous to the group. My biggest reservation about the Last Waltz is that it captures Richard Manuel at such a low point. As great as Levon and Rick are Richard is so special, whether tying the harmonies together from bass notes to falsetto or singing the most heartwrenching leads ever. A singular talent but just a total trainwreck. He brought so much joy to his bandmates and so many listeners like me, just wish he could've been happier.

"The Band" was a Canadian-American rock band formed in 1967. They started out as the "Hawks", the backing group for singer Ronnie Hawkins & later they were the back up band for Bob Dylan. Their most popular songs included "The Weight" & "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". But they had a lot of other great songs such as "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "The Shape I'm In", "Ophelia", "It Makes No Difference" etc.

Hello from Canada. Growing up in the seventies, canadian radio has can/con. This is Canadian Content and stations had to play about 30% of it and so we heard The Band music assuming everybody was listening....turns out they did have a strong following in the US too. Glad you enjoy Robbie and the boys. You might enjoy Ken Tobias music from that era.

I love your enthusiasm for the music ,guys ! Did you know that a well respected Rock critic once said that singing lead and playing drums on a song was as difficult as flying 2 jets at the same time ? The late ,great Mr Levon Helm did it so easily and brilliantly as like breathing ..a remarkable talent as a musician of the highest order . Amongst all drummers ,he earned their entire respect and admiration with his work ...they thought that this guy was the real item . Best wishes from Scotland and keep those The Band videos coming . Oh and by the way ,when you finally watch The Last Waltz in it's entirety ,my only advice is that THIS FILM SHOULD BE PLAYED LOUD ! Enjoy ....

Levon (Leave On) Helm is a great drummer, singer and actor ( Coal Miner's daughter/Shooter) and most likely the leader of the band (except that Robbie Robertson, guitar, thinks he was the leader......ha ha ) This was Eric Clapton'
s favorite band of the later 60s claiming they were the "real thing". Levon lived in Woodstock NY and had a barn converted into a recording studio/venue. Many artists had gone up, spent weeks living and recording on the farm to get a great product, sometimes live with a crowd of a few hundred cheering.

The unfortunate thing about The Last Waltz is the camera equipment at the time couldn’t run for the entire show without overheating. Because of that they lost a lot of footage but the audio remains. If you can find it get a copy of the 4 disc cd version and you’ll get the entire performance from that night. I’d like to suggest their performance of Don’t Do It live at the academy of music in 1971.

The Band is so loaded with talent that Levon Helm (one of the most iconic singers of all time) may only be the 2nd or 3rd best in the Band. Levon would say that he knew they could stand up to any other group and their lead singer because they had Richard Manuel. And Rick Danko's performance of "It Makes No Difference" in the Last Waltz is maybe the best vocal performance by any of them.

I feel the same way that you do about The Band. They effect me like no other group I know. Please react to more of their music. Try out such songs as The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Also Don't Do It. You'll be amazed!!!

Do you guys understand that THE BAND was Bob Dylan's backing band starting in 1965 when Dylan decided to "go electric", a historic moment in rock. They were known as THE HAWKS then. After a few years with Dylan, and a famous album that became a "Holy Grail" of unreleased music, called The Basement Tapes. After that, they decided to write their own songs and albums so they decided the simple name THE BAND fit perfectly (mainly because people would go see Dylan, and always say, "who is that Band up there backing Dylan?".
The Band strikes home for so many because of their Americana rootsy backwoods feel. Ironically 4 of the 5 were Canadians , Levon Helm, the drummer and lead vocalist, was the only American from Arkansas. He gave The Band that Southern folksy bluesy feel with his strong voice. But they had 3 lead vocalists, with the soft quiet voice of piano player Richard Manual, and the more upbeat unusual warble of bass guitarist Rick Danko.
Plus, The Band members all played multiple instruments and would frequently switch instruments during a show. And they would play old more traditional instruments. Fiddles, accordians, mandolins and occasional brass. They were in many ways the "anti-psychedelic" band of the late 60s when the west coast was all into the Summer of Love, with Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, The Grateful Dead leading the way. The Band seemed old fashioned, out of place and thus were a stark contrast. Their music was about more rural themes, the fall harvest, the carnival coming through a small town, an old rocking chair on a porch, the sound of the wind whispering through the pine forest.
Their first TWO albums, MUSIC FROM BIG PINK, and the BROWN ALBUM simply called THE BAND, are both essential albums full of classics.

I highly recommend you checking out when you get time:
      >The NIGHT THEY DROVE OLD DIXIE DOWN (written by Robbie Robertson, lead guitarist of The Band, about the South (Confederate) perspective of the American Civil War, sung by Southerner Levon Helm giving it that added legitimacy. But actually made into a hit by the beautiful voice of Joan Baez, so her version is must hear too.
      >WHISPERING PINES (Richard Manual)
      >UNFAITHFUL SERVANT (Rick Danko lead vocal)
      > KING HARVEST (WILL SURELY COME)
those songs all feature a different lead vocalist to get a more complete picture.
And yes, a reaction of just the music performances from The last Waltz would be very welcome.
Both Eric Clapton and Beatle George Harrison inquired if they could JOIN The Band!

The yodel part they added in this performance was great but I missed that they left out a verse from the original. He left out where he sung about giving her his winnings and she tore up the money and threw it in his face. I always thought that verse really added to telling us about the free spirit she was.
