  • Bill developed hand arthritis in his left hand that started to affect his ability to play guitar and affect his job as a sign language interpreter. The pain of #arthritis in his hand, led to Bill seeking care with a hand surgeon at Johns Hopkins Orthopaedics.
    Visit us: www.hopkinsmed...
Dr. Dawn LaPorte, Bill's physician, talked to him about all options that could help alleviate the pain. Ultimately, Bill decided to move forward with a thumb CMC Arthoplasty (thumb joint replacement). Following the surgery, Bill had the help of the Johns Hopkins Rehabilitation Network's occupational therapist, Jyo Supnekar, to regain function and strength in his hand. Bill is now back to playing guitar and working as a sign language interpreter with no pain thanks to the team at #JohnsHopkins.

I’m sorry, Jade, for taking so long to reply. I’ve never been in something featured on UA-cam, so I never thought about checking to see if there were any comments.
Anyway, thanks for making time to leave a comment. It’s rare that I get the opportunity to use what I know to help other folks who are facing what I went through.

I’m 51 and for the last 5 weeks I’ve had pain while playing bass that unfortunately is looking like that same issue. Being so early into I plan to explore some topical remedy’s but thanks for the assurance that surgery is a great option if required. 🙏🏻

Bill, how long ago was your surgery? I’ve gotten to the point where both of my thumbs are killing me constantly, now my left wrist is blowing up. Rheumatologist just shoots steroids in me with no luck, now diminishing return. I’m outside of D.C. and would like to ask the name of your surgeon if possible. Thanks and I’m glad you’re feeling better!

    Happy for Bill.
    However.
    I can't afford surgery.
Probably have 5 years of playing left in me.

Matt, I’m sorry for not replying sooner. I had no idea anyone would leave comments. I’m very sorry to hear that finances are keeping you from from getting proper treatment. You certainly aren’t alone. It’s fundamentally wrong for circumstances like that to exist. I pray that you’ll somehow be able to have the surgery. Hang in there.

That's very kind and decent of you to respond in such a manner. It's typically met with the stock response "I appreciate it".
I *actually* do appreciate it. It means something. Thank you, Bill.

I have basal thumb OA. not great for guitar players. I do mostly solo jazz harmony and its a killer. So far no surgery just braces and massage. Surgeon did not recommend surgery unless, or until it gets must worse. Apparently, its a hit or miss surgery with some improving, others not. He is lucky to have access to Johns Hopkins. Most of us will have to deal with local hospitals and surgeons.

@@orlandogonzalez8829 good luck!, there are some procedures that may work for you

I don’t think “hit or miss” is an accurate assessment. It’s actually a very common surgery these days. My brother-in-law is an orthopedic surgeon, and does the procedure on a regular basis. The results are pretty consistent. Between the time when I first started to feel pain until actually having the surgery comprised about four years. Cortisone and NSAIDs kept it bearable. I also switched to .008s on my guitars. My surgeon was very clear at the get-go about the eventual need to undergo the procedure. I had no doubts at all when I reached that point.
I hope you are able to find the right surgeon who will give you the hope you need, and that you can get back to enjoying playing your guitar.

I started to learn guitar at 72, which I’m sure affected my progress, due to mild arthritis and slower nerve twitching. I’ve considered stem cell therapy, but not sure it’ll make a big difference.

Bill, thank you so much for posting this... This is very, very encouraging for me... My left hand has the arthritis as well, it's in my thumb and index finger. I also seem to have weakness when trying to form a couple of bar chords.. I get the pain most when trying to form the open Am and C chords. Calling the hand specialist here in Kansas City... 👊😎🎼❤️

Hi Warren! Reaching a point where your discomfort begins to take away the ability to play is most unsettling. As you know, the pain only gets worse.
I see that your reply is from a year ago. Please catch me up on what’s happened since then.

Hi Steve! I’m glad the video was encouraging. Have you pursued any remedies since you posted this? I’m happy to report that my left thumb is still going strong. I don’t gig anymore, so there’s less stress on that joint, but I can open a stubborn lid on a jar, or lift a 30 lb. bag of cat litter without blinking. I hope you’re pain-free and able to play again.

My arthritis was in my ring finger joint (Left hand) ... Dr Elzik removed the arthritic material and put in a Swanson hinge. I just had the stiches out and I'm in my 2nd week of therapy. I have been a guitar player since 1970 and it is an essential part of my life. I'm hoping to get back to it within the next 2 months - I cheat all the time though and play with 2 fingers. LOL
