Yeah, it's not really that ugly of a movie, but the unfinished aspect is still noticeable; not all of the effects are in place, such as the Twinkle Eyed Ponies not having their sparkling gem-eyes in all of their scenes, and there are noticeable errors like ponies appearing in the wrong places.
You've gotta admit, for a mere ten weeks of insane work, the animation *should* look much, much worse. 300k animation cels in 70 days. Also, the duet between Lickety and Spike is the worst thing that has ever happened ever.
The animation was also done by Toei in certain areas... and, in my opinion, it's not really ugly looking, but it is unfortunately still unfinished looking; the Twinkle-Eyed Ponies, for example, were supposed to have gems for eyes that sparkled, but this isn't the case for all scenes (some had standard eyes while others lacked the sparkles)... which sucks. Can you also believe that the voice actor for Baby Lickety Split is a Broadway singer? Haven't really heard her outside of the Baby Lickety Split voice, though, but... still... odd. Also, I've seen worse than that on MLP... but it would be my opinion.
I’m legitimately impressed by the animation only being done in 10 weeks. Talented artists clearly worked on this. I hope they went on to better productions.

While I love this movie, it and the "Bright Lights" two-parter is what got me into MLP in the first place, I definitely feel like every maker of animated musicals should learn the difference between "Singing" and "a song". That comment seriously put something I'd been feeling for most my life into words finally. I really see it as a problem with direct-to-video sequels in particular. Also, considering that, as I recall, Tirek was beaten by the Rainbow of Light, and the shadow thief was curbstomped by one group of Flutterponies. And here a failed version of the Smooze takes all the flutterponies and the rainbow to beat. I just find it cool that the silly do-op singing blob is such a bigger threat then all the super serious and menacing villains.

Hasbro lost the copyrights to pretty much every MLP character from the 80's except for Applejack and Spike for some reason. The rest of the Mane 6 just ended up being melded versions of the 80's characters, like Pinkie Pie basically being Surprise, Fluttershy being Posey, etc. FYI, the voice of the boy is Scott "Robin" Menville, who did double duty in this show, voicing Danny and the sole boy in the Moon Dreamers shorts. ... I know way too much about 80's MLP.
Basically in a nutshell this move takes place during Generation 1 My Little Pony. If you think that this looks similar to the current My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Series it's because My Little Pony Friendship is Magic aka Generation 4 My Little Pony is a complete reboot of the franchise. Basically Lauren Faust was a fan of this and when they got her to do Generation 4 she based the show on her childhood from playing My Little Pony Toys.
Yay, refreshing seeing the Snob do this one, my sister and i are hyped for the new movie and this is an perfect oportunity to show (yet again) the Cinema Snob to her!
The plot for the scrapped animated Jem movie sounded a million times better than what we got. An evil AI would have been introduced (think Silica from the current IDW comic), along with a band comprised of hypnotic twins, who would have hypnotized Jem into telling her identity to Rio. Plus, if the rumors were true, Kimber, Aja, and Shana would have been written out (as was the tradition of the Hasbro films at the time to write out old characters for the new upcoming toyline characters), and Stormer would have joined Holograms, along with a new girl. The Misfits would have gotten a new member to replace Stormer, as well.
Not a Jem fan, but I honestly feel bad for Jem fans. First that movie gets scrapped partially thanks to this shit movie, then the new one just... yeah.
Damnit why couldn't we get that movie? Also watching reviews of 80s Transformers and G.I. Joe, I can't imagine how they would write out the other holograms.
From what I heard, Kimber was going to get married to Jeff; Aja went to Europe to be with Craig; and Shana finally got her own design career going. Raya would have stayed with the group and it'd have gone back down to four members.
As someone who actually DID find enjoyment in FiM's era, it is genuinely weird to look back on G1 MLP. The feel and tone between the two are whole dimensions apart.
I always thought of it as a sort of evolution where at the end of gen 3 the timeline was reset, I sometimes think the grundels are just evolved diamond dogs…
You know what? As a guy, I'm not ashamed to admit I used to watch the old My Little Pony with my younger sister way back in the day when we were little kids. As very strange as this sounds, I even named one of my cats Megan after the ponies' human friend when I was 8. Good thing I kept this a secret from everyone in grade school or else I would have expected nonstop bullying and ass whoppings on the playground every day.
Wow, they sure were subtle with plugging that dream house. Somehow I found myself liking the witch sisters characters the most, I think they also went on more of the quests and adventures in this movie than the actual heroes.
You know, as a gay man, I really was ahead of my time. I loved this movie, to much criticism and rebuke, as a child. And to see this movie go through all the hype in recent is like... damn- I really was ahead of my time haha
I got this VHS yesterday which is the original VHS release from Vestron Video. That’s right! Vestron made this movie on VHS, and this was one of the few titles outside of their B-movie genres such as horror/slasher, romcom, sex comedies, adult comedies and action. Vestron also did other animated films on home video such as “Smurfs and the Magic Flute” and the “Care Bears Movie”. Sadly, Lionsgate, the company that owns the Vestron library never got the rights to release it on Blu-Ray, because Shout Factory owns the home video rights to this movie with Hasbro, not Lionsgate. BTW, Lionsgate did released the reboot back in 2017 with DHX Media and Allspark Pictures which were co-produced.
SuperDevolution Please. If you want to see a cash grab with surprising amount of talent, go see Transformers: The Movie. At least you'll get an awesome soundtrack to listen to.
That was a thing back then. Go Bots the Movie even had Roddy McDowall, Telly Savalas, and Margot Kiddler, the thing Brad mentions at the end with this and Transformers the Movie both bombed so bad and were so badly panned that Hasbro canceled the Gem movie and didn't bother putting the G.I. Joe movie into theaters has a sadder ending, this action pissed off Sunbow (the company that made all the shows) as they were proud of the G.I. Joe movie and didn't really give a shit about the others, Transformers failure at the box office and the declining ratings of the show (and the backlash against Optimus Prime's death) also led to the planned fourth season being canceled and replaced with a five part series finale, but when Hasbro said "Fuck it" it was cut down to three episodes instead of five (which shows, as that multi-part episode suffers from serious pacing problems and wasting new characters) which led to the companies parting ways, which led the the third season of G.I. Joe being scrapped before the series was given to DiC, who dumbed it down severely into a comedy action show aimed a very young children instead of an all ages action show.
I have seen Transformers: The Movie, but this is more surprising to me because this wasn't an established series first. Only a couple of animated specials pre-date this movie.
Holy crap when you made the "sugar tits" joke I got major Nostalgia Chick flashbacks. I don't know what it is about that specific line that prompts the very specific phrase "sugar tits" but it's amusing XD
I bet my parents are thankful I was too young to take to the movies when this crap came out. I did have a bunch of the toys though haha. My favorite one was a scented purple pony with an ice cream cutie mark.
G1 MLP was weird; you had ponies with gems for eyes, long-legged ponies, swirly-pattern ponies, ponies with fuzz on them, baby ponies that I believe urinated... it was weird... but (most of the time) it was brilliant too.
When the original came out on VHS, it was under Vestron Video. And guess what? Benny Boy from “Oddity Archive” talks about the history of Vestron Video in a new episode titled “VHS Cult Movie Distributors - Vol. 2”.
7:08 Somewhere, in a recording booth sometime in the mid-1980s, Madeline Kahn had to record at least several takes of a list of "D" words ending in the word "dank". How is that a scenario that actually exists?!
Snob the villain is clearly a confused starbuck's barista who failed to realize that the unicorn frappuccino isn't made with real unicorns, also if it was then the barista simply doesn't realize that nobody cares about unicorn frappuccinos anymore.
As someone who was forced to watch this repeatedly as a kid (thanks to having a little sister who wouldn't Stop watching it), I Thank you Snob for saving me $75 in therapy Bills this week; this was very cathartic.
Holy shit I used to watch the first and second show as a kid. The Disney Channel reran the original show(And the second) for years, and my sister wound up renting the movie because of that. Guess I'll see if it holds up now.
I personally think the original hold up generally pretty well (minus animation), but the second show doesn't... I don't think it's atrocious, but it's horribly dated in my eyes.
FWIW, I meant the movie, not the TV series. No idea if it holds up and I don't want to be disappointed if it doesn't. Felt that about the original Voltron. Was soooooooo disappointed by it.
22:11 Wait! The Cinema Snob not only reviewed a movie Nostalgia Chick already reviewed but he also used one of her jokes? I think we need a Brad Jones/Lindsay Ellis crossover episode.
I can't wait for the MLP movie!!! I think it's gonna be amazing!! I remember watching the 1986 movie when I was growing up and there was something about the animation I found comforting. But obviously the new movie isn't gonna be anything like the old one. I'm hoping it'll be something people can enjoy even if they don't follow the show.
You want to know something strange... this movie was LITERALLY going to have connections to G.I. Joe; there was supposed to be a scene where Shipwreck was drunk and saw ponies fly by... not making that up, it was to be a real scene, but they cut it because it wasn't funny.
This movie was also released as a soundtrack on Kid Stuff Records label in 1986, and it was probably the very last album to released on the Kid Stuff label which was part of IJE. “The Popples Nutcracker Christmas” was also the last read-along book & record set to be released on Kid Stuff until the label closed down that same year, and IJE formed GameTek in 1987. John Braden who also edited for the soundtrack until he passed away a year later in 1987. He was 41 years old, and Kid Stuff Records was abandoned completely which brought to an end of amazing 10-year run was a budget kids record label.
Well, well, well, what a delightful surprise, Cinema Snob! ^_^ That's all I can say, aside from how awesome of a job you did on the review! :D And, boy, is it ever pumping me up for the new MLP movie--I can't wait to see it with my folks! ^_^
So, according to the Snob, the bug that was eaten was the spider's wife (@9:24) AND its daughter (@21:10). The Snob's version of MLP is waaay more interesting than the actual version
9:00 Given that everything else in the movie screams cheap 80s TV animation, the commercial break-style transitions were probably intentional. The people working on this had no illusions about what they were doing.
The Eddie character always makes me laugh! I love the idea of an eighties/nineties porn character being exposed to internet porn and being very VERY confused and scared XD
One other the 1986 and 2017 MLP movies have in common, they both have a Teen Titan in it. The 1986 one had Robin (the ginger boy) and the 2017 movie has Raven (Twilight Sparkes)
The 1986 My Little Pony Movie and The 2017 My Little Pony Movie have a lot in common with the 2007 Teen Titans Movie and the 2018 Teen Titans Movie respectively.
@@kobaltsteel6418The actor did a ton of roles as a kid. He was also Red Herring in A Pup Named Scooby Doo and one of the Cabbage Patch Kids in their Christmas special (can never remember his name but he’s the one that is dressed as an army soldier)
"Rushed 10 weeks animating..." And My Little Pony was the favourite daughter at Hasbro! The animation mistakes are the biggest flaw of the film; The music is the best aspect of the film. The script is strongest when it comes to individual scenes & dialogue and overall intent of story but fails with other scenes and when trying to saw off the edges of any danger; The framework is there but pulls the Happy Little Elves with stuff like having the Smooze make people mean versus kill or hurt them and Lickety-Split's running away being poorly done. -The framing of Og NOT being shown before he appears was a strength in the storytelling! The Flutter Ponies are clearly more slender than the regular ponies. The Smooze was dropped in The Volcano of Gloom-The witches were impaled on their own sword. It's more of a flawed 90 minute special than a theatrical film but is very much worth existing.
That's because this practically IS one; not only was it rushed, but if you compare the credits of this movie to the 1985 special, you'll notice MANY returning names (outside of voice actors)... which can be a problem because TV =/= cinema and it unfortunately affected the movie because they clearly weren't experienced in cinema. We already know about the fade-to-blacks and dramatic music breaks, but there were also some cut scenes in this movie that were supposed to be understood only through later viewings (specifically, a scene where a DRUNKEN G.I. Joe character walks out to see ponies fly by... not making this up; it was cut because it wasn't funny, though)... which you shouldn't do in a theatrical release because that wastes time.
When this movie was released on home video in 1986, the release date when I researched online was October 28th, 1986, the day after the New York Mets won the World Series beating the Boston Red Sox 5-8 in Game 7 where the Mets became World Champions. Mets fans were celebrated all over NYC at the time right before this movie came out on VHS, and thankfully, I still have it. The VHS release of “My Little Pony: The Movie” ended up being a cult classic.
And did you know that this movie came out two months before “Howard The Duck” came out that same year, and five months before “An American Tail” came out. A user by the name of “Yesterworld Entertainment” did a full video about the history of that horrid “Howard The Duck” movie if you want to see it.

Eurika's castle AND David the gnome? Classic
Man, I heard the Pony movie would have a different art style, but this is weird. Where's Starlight? Where's Discord? Where's that weird dog yeti monster voiced by Sabertooth?
noobmaster117 Starlight is in the human world with Sunset, Discord... in the Eye of Terror, and Sabertooth is in the movie, if you blink you will misd him XD
They revamped the whole series and scrapped all the annoying "good parts" so they can get straight to the important messages. BUY OUR TOYS.
Basically Lauren Faust was a fan of this and when they got her to do Generation 4 she based the show on her childhood from playing My Little Pony Toys.
briansivley2001 that's the joke.
"We're fitters, not quitters" .... I just had milk snort out my nose! Which is scary cause I wasn't drinking milk 0_o
Dokka Chapman it's probably not milk then... O_O
You may wanna get your kidneys checked out.
That Phelous impression though XD
12:12 I didn't think My Little Pony would ever have a "Roll Credits" moment.
2 Eureka Castle and a David the Gnome Reference hot damn.
Second David the Gnome reference today for me.
Your grump face at the end had me snort laughing. Thank you for that Snob! XD
A Cartoon episode? I hope at least this one is entertaining. (Okay there is a Wabuu joke, 10/10 right there)

WABUU!!! THE GREATEST MY LITTLE PONY CHARACTER!!!

"She's still ALIVE?! SHiiiiiiiiiiii..."
"Most of the little ponies are soooo stoooopid, hehehehe..."
What would have been better had he gotten Phelous to voice Wabuu.
Yay, refreshing seeing the Snob do this one, my sister and i are hyped for the new movie and this is an perfect oportunity to show (yet again) the Cinema Snob to her!
Please tell me she's not 8 years old...I don't think this is quite the internet show you should be showing her if she is...
I'm not a bad person! XD She's 16 and i'm 21!

One of the most truthful lines ever.
Unfortunately true.
Those poor seamen.
Rusty Ralston Sailors?
We put seamen in stuffed animals where it BELONGS
No comment.
That was glorious, Brad! *incoherent giggling*
WHY DIDN'T THAT HAPPEN INSTEAD OF THE LIVE ACTION ONE?!
6:43 WHAT THE FUCK! That gave me a heart attack!
full metal she knows you're there... she knows your soul is delicious...
She's the Jeff The Killer of Ponies.
Oh please tell me he's reviewing MLP The Movie on Midnight Screenings.
Nidorino Alliance It's pretty much a given now.
Him and Lupa, I'm sure.
Equestria Girls was on one of the Snob DVDs.
I know at least Brian would do it.
Split Banana he's got his priorities first though. He's gonna check out Blade Runner 2049 first. Probably with Dave.
I have to admit, as a 20ish 80s guy, I crushed on Megan..who was 14..
I wonder what Snob's cutie mark would be....
Cocaine.
Bare feet
Lloyd smoking a cigarette
Or a hand flipping the bird
Lloyd drinking Crystal Pepsi.
Wow, they sure were subtle with plugging that dream house. Somehow I found myself liking the witch sisters characters the most, I think they also went on more of the quests and adventures in this movie than the actual heroes.
WAABU!!
AWAKEN MY WOODLAND CREATURES!
DIVINE RACCONSTORM!
Your next line is, “most of the animals are soooo stupid!” Toyu!
And roast phelous again for the 55th time
You know, as a gay man, I really was ahead of my time.
I'm a little disappointed that you aren't reviewing the porno.
Danny DeVito? Madeline Kahn? This movie has a surprising amount of talent for a cash grab.
SuperDevolution Please. If you want to see a cash grab with surprising amount of talent, go see Transformers: The Movie. At least you'll get an awesome soundtrack to listen to.
SuperDevolution 80s
And 'Friendship Is Magic' has John Delancy, Weird Al, Patton Oswald, and William Shatner.
the wabbu cameo was pure gold
There was a made for tv sequel with the witches employing giant mutant bees to destroy the Flutter Ponies with a massive fucking fire.
Holy crap when you made the "sugar tits" joke I got major Nostalgia Chick flashbacks. I don't know what it is about that specific line that prompts the very specific phrase "sugar tits" but it's amusing XD
I seriously thought this was a fan-made, clickbait video when I saw the title and thumbnail in my Suggestion column.
Glad I was wrong.
Torrie Garvin Cinema Snob doesn't clickbait tho
I bet my parents are thankful I was too young to take to the movies when this crap came out. I did have a bunch of the toys though haha. My favorite one was a scented purple pony with an ice cream cutie mark.
That sounds a bit like Lickety Split... but I could be wrong; she has the same color palate and cutie mark you're describing.
G1 MLP was weird; you had ponies with gems for eyes, long-legged ponies, swirly-pattern ponies, ponies with fuzz on them, baby ponies that I believe urinated... it was weird... but (most of the time) it was brilliant too.
"I'm not calling you Buttons. You're Steve!" I love it.
I'd watch a MLP cartoon where they all had normal names. My Little Pony: The Whimsical Adventures of Steve and Earl.
“I’m too cynical for this shit” is my snobquote of the year
23:50 Jem actually made less money at the box office than My Little Pony: The Movie (1986).
When the original came out on VHS, it was under Vestron Video. And guess what? Benny Boy from “Oddity Archive” talks about the history of Vestron Video in a new episode titled “VHS Cult Movie Distributors - Vol. 2”.
6:03 and suddenly the Hot Dog guy from The Happening walked out of the theater and demanded his money back.
What a Bunch of HOT DOGS!
I got a My Little Pony movie ad before this video
Valerie Olson Makes sense. Everything UA-cam does is based on algorithms and computing the tags and titles.
Good thing there is another one with singing Seahorses, kidnappings, and painfully turning ponies into evil dragons.
Aka the GOOD MLP movie. Hope it won't be the only one. The new one might be good.
ua-cam.com/video/gD_e63VsyFw/v-deo.html
"This went theatrical. Move over Fire and Ice!" God damn, if that isn't the harshest Snob line to date.
So...MY LITTLE PONY: THE MOVIE has connections to both HOWARD THE DUCK and MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE?
I can dig it.
I think Brad is going to like the character of "Capper" in the new My Little Pony movie...he's a cat that reminds me of Brad's.
I do maintain the stuff with the Witches is actually kind of fun. It helps that the actors seem to be giving a little bit of a shit playing villians.
I still like them more than Sunset Shimmer
Well, well, well, what a delightful surprise, Cinema Snob! ^_^ That's all I can say, aside from how awesome of a job you did on the review! :D And, boy, is it ever pumping me up for the new MLP movie--I can't wait to see it with my folks! ^_^
Since I was born in 1983 this was one of my fav childhood movies. Thank you so much for doing this
So, according to the Snob, the bug that was eaten was the spider's wife (@9:24) AND its daughter (@21:10).
The Snob's version of MLP is waaay more interesting than the actual version
just saw who the story consultant: it's SLIFER THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER
10:05 ... By the way... Nancy Cartwright every one.....
I was expecting Cathy Weseluck, but man am I surprised. But, it turns out she's Spike in MLP:FIM...so, I wasn't too off.
3:53 Whoa. Roger Slifer "the -Executive Producer- Sky Dragon" worked on this. I can't even :'D
If you watch the TV show, you'll notice many interesting names like Michael Reeves and Linda Woolverton... yes, THAT Woolverton.
oh,and if I'm right, the original Spike was Charlie Adler's first cartoon role.
johnnysasaki I think he was in one of the movies...just not sure it was this one.
7 years watching you, and you haven't slipped a bit.
Can't wait to see what you have in store for the month of October.
7:21
God, I wish this movie was made by Ralph Bakshi, that would have been something.
9:00 Given that everything else in the movie screams cheap 80s TV animation, the commercial break-style transitions were probably intentional. The people working on this had no illusions about what they were doing.
I was hesitant to watch this but glad I did, laughed so hard through this video 😂
Danny (the boy's name) is voiced by Robin? That's crazy.
Whenever a new video comes out, I don't see it right away.
Boy, this confused me to the point of instantly clicking this video.

7:34 Wait just a gosh darn minute, did those ponies hooves just morph into FINGERS?
3:10 - Careful CS, you're treading on Phelous' territory there! You're completely useless now!
*HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!* 😂
The only way CS can make up for this is to hand over his oldest daughter to die in his place! Or maybe I'll just marry her? I'm not a consistent Beast.
Greatsaiyakirby yep he just copyed
I remember watching this in the 90s. Also loved your new names for the ponies!
