  • Episode 6 "Zenza Bronica ETR Si / 135W film back (Panorama)"
    Zenza Bronica ETR Si is the 6x4.5cm medium film camera. It normally uses a 120 film to shoot 6x4.5cm photo. This time I used 135W film back to shoot 5.4x2.4cm panorama photo with 35mm film. It is a very interesting camera to shoot! I highly recommend to have an experience with this camera!

    Cool niche specialty film backs like this are so cool. I've been struggling so much adapting 35mm to my medium format Yashica TLR. It is such a cumbersome processes, that I wish I had a solution like this. But I haven't let that get in the way of filming myself making sprocket photos with the TLR and posting it on my youtube channel. Guess I'm just a glutton for punishment. Thank you so much for sharing. Your shots are great btw your middle frame at 5:57 is dope. The foreground and middle ground draw you in to the middle and the background zig zag draws your eyes up. Overall in your images you're making great use of contrast and balancing negative & positive space. Subscribed! Can't wait to see what you shoot next

    Excellent review of the Bronica ETRSi with the W 135 film back. Your images looked great. I traded some things I had for a Bronica ETRS that a wedding photographer had. I was surprised at how light this camera is compared to my Mamiya 645 Pro. It seems to be a very well designed camera body with excellent lenses. This is a real bargain camera considering the quality of the medium format images or the panorama images you get with the W 135 back. I love medium format film because of the excellent quality of the images compared to 35mm cameras. MF film images have soul compared to digicams, IMHO. Keep up the good work.!

      Thank you! I think bronica is a really great deal. It is very affordable price and picture is great. Although 135 film back is bit hard to find, it makes a interesting picture indeed. I hope you have a great time with your camera!! Thank you for enjoying and supporting my channel!! :)

      jep same here, also it uses leaf shutters compared to mamiyas, and lenses are cheap so if the shutter has issues, just buy a new lens for about 150$ and youre good again. way better than buying a new body

      A lot lighter though without the extra image size of a square 120 or a 6x7 format camera. But you do get more shots on a film.

    Hello! I have the same setup, minus the waist level and plus more 120 backs and lenses. Had it out Saturday with 120 Velvia and Superia in the 135W. Accidentally found a car show where I went to dinner and shot the cars pano with the 50 f2.8. They fit perfectly in the pano ratio.
    I was lucky - the camera came with the pano-ready glass and I found the back later.
    You are right, the ETRSi is a gem. It is flexible and not too heavy.
    Happy shooting!

      Thank you for your comment and enjoying my video!! I totally agree with your opinion that the Bronica ETRsi is a gem for sure. There are not many medium format camera that can shoot 135 film especially the 645 format camera. Great that you have the same set up! I recently got 40mm lens and it gives a great angle of view!! Have a try!! I hope you have a good time with your camera!!!

    when i was in the service i had an earlier model...that was back in '73 when i had it. good infra-red color shots with a red filter...but you have an interesting setup with the 35 mm film for panoramic shots. mine was pretty
    primitive compared to yours, but a bronica is still a bronica...nice k-chunk of the shutter. it lets you know the
    process of film exposure is done.
    ever try black & white film processing yourself? can't beat it.

By the way, I happen to own this same camera with some lenses (40mm/4, 75/2.8 and 135/3.5) and also a polaroid back and normal 6x4.5 film back but I did not even know that there was this 135mm-back available! Very nice video! Lucky you finding that 135 W back. Sadly, they are being sold as gold from Ebay Japan. Actually I´m looking for the GS-1 135 W, in order to get +1 cm wider panos, than the ones from the ETRsi or SQ-Ai. It´s like looking for a needle in a haystack! Currently I´m shooting panos with the GS-1 220 backs with a 135 to 120 adapter. Pro: I get all the fim exposed including the sprocket holes. Con: film is not wound on flat and it may be focus issues shooting wide open. You got a new subscriber. Looking forward to seeing your next videos. Greets from Germany

    Interesting option for panoramic, however there is one question which puzzles me.
    The ETRSi is an SLR so you're looking through the lens at your image through the prism or WLF.
    So, what allows you see the panoramic format for composition?
    In other words, how does the 35mm back communicate the panoramic dimensions to the viewfinder?
    Do you need to fit a mask over the focusing screen?
    I'd appreciate if a user could answer this. Thanks.

    • @thewildgoose7467
      @thewildgoose7467 3 роки тому +1

      After more research I can now answer my own question, in case anyone else is wondering...
      Focusing screen Ei has etched lines which show both 35mm panoramic and normal 35mm frame lines (when using 135w or 135n backs) while also giving the full 6x4.5 view.
      And also for anyone interested, the prices for any of this gear has gone through the roof in the two years since this video was posted. I paid around €800 (135w back) and €200 (focusing screen) for these two or $1,200 !!
      On top of that I had to buy the body, finder and lens.
      Still much better than buying the Hasselblad Xpan though (currently €3-3,500!!)
      More versatile too (you can also shoot 6x4.5) and and unlike the Xpan it's modular so if one part breaks you can repair or replace that part only.

    Good video, but please stop touching the pressure plates on your camera backs! (They are the perforated black plate that the film rests on in the frame). These need to be kept as clean as possible to prevent scratching of the film, and the fewer times you have to clean it, the better, you really don't want to damage that plate.

  • @westcoasthaase
    @westcoasthaase 5 років тому +2

    I found a back but don’t you need a special focusing screen so you can compose correctly?

    • @plusalphastudio
      @plusalphastudio  5 років тому

      Great that you’ve got the back! If you don’t have the focus screen for 135mm, it’s ok, but it is a bit hard to tell where the picture get cropped though (the top and bottom of the frame). Best is to get focus screen, but it is also hard to find. Easy way to solve the problem is get your focusing screen out and put on top of 135 film (locate it on the center), then use line masking tap to mark the film size! This works just find. I don’t recommend to use pen, because it can damage the view finder. Or you can just use the original focusing screen with estimating the area!

    135필름을 넣으시면 16컷 이상 찍힐텐데 그 이상 카운터는 자동으로 넘어가나요?

    • @plusalphastudio
      @plusalphastudio  4 роки тому

      필름이 다 찍히면 넘어가지 않고 필름이 걸린 느낌이 듭니다! 135mm 필름은 120와 다르게 필름이 필름통에 붙어있어 넘어가지 않습니다!

    I just bought an ETRS and I’m looking at getting the W back. Quick question: how do you frame up the panorama shots? Are there any indicators through the viewfinder?

      There are a viewfinder for w film back! However, it is a bit hard to get.. I recommend you put a line sticker on tour viewfinder!

      @@plusalphastudio are there two different versions of this 135w film back? I've seen some on ebay recently with only one latch to open the back. Your 135W film back has two latches on the top.

      Hmm I'm not sure that they have 2 version.. But what I know is that there are two different type of 135 film back. One is the 135w film back which can take panorama like my one. Another one is 135n film back which can take photo same as normal 135 film camera. Know that it is not a perfect answer to your question... If you find an answer please share! Thanks!

      @@plusalphastudio yes, I think you have answered it right, the 135 N has the two opening catches, the W only one!, this is probably an easy way to tell them apart!, as they both take 35 mm cartridges, also one tip, the 135 N also has a feature, that it can accept the W's insert, as the cog is a variable radius, to fit both crank sizes, for each insert, as the frame spacing is different.

      i wonder if you could use a 135N back and a 120 back and hack a 135w out of it.
      the W needs the advance from the 120 back, so you could probaby use gears of the 120 back.

      Ah ha..! The full film strip gets exposed.The panorama functions on other 35mm film camera (like panorama fuction on Olympus mju) covers top and bottom of the film to shoot panorama, but on this it use full strip of film. Therefore the exposed area is much bigger making a clearer image.
