Hey, Red Baron! Greetings from the Philippines! Actually, there's more than 1 type of Bolo & the Ginunting is just one of them! The Ginunting in particular is specialized as a man-killer, sort of like the Japanese Katana. Just for your information. By the way, you wouldn't happen to be a Sabaton fan, would you? If so, let me guess your favorite Sabaton song: It's "The Red Baron", right? Well, it's the same as mine, along with "The Last Stand"! If so, Greetings, Brother!

The ginunting, like the kris, and kampilan (a long sword) are Filipino blades that are purpose-built weapons. Other long blades, such as the bolo, are primarily agricultural implements. Of all Filipino blades, however, the ginunting has proven itself to this day as a purely functional weapon, leading it to be adopted as the blade of choice of the Philippine Force Recon Marines. They have combat training using the ginunting. That's a tough bunch of hard men, and giving their stamp of approval to this weapon validates its battle-worthy status. Now, never mess with a nation whose soldiers carry bladed weapons and actually train how to use them.

The design reminds me of the Dacian Falx or Falcata I think... anyways the Dacian Falx became famous among the Romans for its notoriety. It is said that this weapon, due to its shape, can destroy shields and armor like a warhammer would. The Ginunting, shares this design and therefore, its famous cutting power. Well, Philippine Force Recon Marines do carry this blade in the field. Its even standard issue in some cases. So much so that kali is taught to all branches of the service. The wood is kamagong, called iron wood, its not really a wood that would easily deteriorate and rot, even with intense humidity and monsoon rains. As for the shine, that is why it has the black tactical finish. It is expensive though; however MSgt Prado is still in service, and had been known to provide and even give away some blades to his fellow servicemen.

Priced me out. Won't buy a knife without knowing the steel its made out of. Good steel and consistent heat treatment is the key to a good blade. I can build one in my forge out of premium steel and controlled heat and cryo for about a third of the price, and will know what I've got.

A good blade comes from the process of making the blade or how it is really build not just from any type of steel. A good blacksmith knows how to build a terrible type of steel to a good blade.
