I’m picking up my fx6 today and needed to go over a few things to see if the negatives outweighed the positives, and so far I’m still leaning towards going for it bc this camera is a beast. does a system exist that allows someone to convert the the raw output into a more usable file like MP4?
    i work for company making higher quality product vids (organic content) and I'm surprisingly using an A7RV, and my colleague has an fx6, he struggles with dealing with the file format coming off of the camera.
    i got tricked into upgrading the A7RV because i was lead to believe i could get higher quality and simultaneously have the

    I was surprised by your comment/complaint about battery prices. As a full time working professional in corporate video, I purchased the FX-6 (after owning an FX-3) already knowing that stepping up in class to a “Cinema Camera” was going to require a larger investment. Sony is not going to cannibalize their own product line to accommodate the consumers pocket. These manufacturers expect that anyone purchasing a $6000 camera is going to generate at least 20 times that amount in revenue as a professional. As the end user, I should understand that every accessory (camera cages, Sony batteries, v-mount batteries, CF-Express type A cards to access the 120 FPS) every accessory will cost more commensurate that a higher class of camera would require. To pay $6000 for a camera body and then complain that it doesn’t use the $78 NP-FZ100 like the mirrorless cameras do? I am surprised. Unless someone buys it just to have it and doesn’t monetize the camera, I can’t imagine why this would be a con that they didn’t anticipate already. This is a bigger camera, so naturally it is going to require a bigger more powerful battery that can last through a full day shoot. Once You step into the big leagues you have to expect the fastballs to come in at 98 mph and the sliders to break a lot sharper than they do in the minor leagues.

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  Рік тому +1

      Hey NY Corporate Video Productions, I understand that a larger camera is going to have a larger investment but I wanted to make sure to document my initial thoughts about the camera. A $320 72w proprietary battery is quite the price tag when you consider v-lock batteries that are more universally compatible with other cameras and lights.. and they're more affordable. Most higher-end "big league" cinema cameras use v-mount batteries. The FX6 is great with battery life in the scheme of cinema cameras, however, that was something that I thought was a little on the expensive side. Have already paid off this camera and then some with freelance projects, but $960 for 3 or $1280 for 4 proprietary batteries (not including tax) is pretty expensive when v-lock batteries are higher capacity, more universally accepted, and cheaper. Still absolutely love this camera and am going to buy a few BP batteries, just not excited about it when I could be putting that money to use elsewhere.

      @csmvideoproductions7359 Рік тому

      @@keith-knittel I wound up getting GDU 98wh v-mounts along with the Tilta V Mount battery adapter. Two V-mounts are more than enough for me to carry a full day of shooting.
      It’s not cheap to play in the deep end of the pool, I agree it’s more costly. For the average consumer, I would feel some degree of sympathy but then again why would the average consumer purchase a $6000 camera body if they were unable to monetize their investment? As for me, I pass the cost of my investments onto my clients. I only paid for my first camera and accessories, if any more comes out of my pocket personally, then I’m doing something wrong. My clients pay for my gear, that the way it’s supposed to be when you purchase Camera bodies that cost Thousands of dollars.

    I’ve been debating the fx3 or fx6 over the last couple months and I really wanted to go with the fx6 but I think the fx3 is the better option. It’s smaller has the same exact quality to my knowledge and I already have all of the batteries that I’ve been using from my A7iv

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  Рік тому

      I have the A7S III and FX30 as well, it really depends on what youre shooting the most. I've been shooting a lot of video, and missed having video-specific cameras when shooting so the FX6 is a dream to work with, even given all of the picky "downsides" I have here. If you're shooting photo and video or want a smaller kit (or active stabilization!) the FX3 is a great camera though. Either give great results.

I wrote down a video topic idea comparing the FX6 to the FX30/A7SIII (I don't have an FX3 at the moment). Is there anything you'd like to see compared specifically? @@keith-knittel I’d like to see side by side shots to compare the image quality from all 3 cameras in different lighting conditions if possible. And I think a lot of people would be interested in hearing you speak about form factor versatility. I’ve heard some people say that when they bought a cinema camera it made them compose there shots better and they began to charge more because cinema cameras look more professional. But smaller cams have perks too when it comes to ease of shooting and traveling so your point of view would be nice.

      @@DeshayTheLegend There is zero difference between the FX6 and FX3 when it comes to picture quality. They have the exact same sensor and processing.
      The difference is in pro functionality of the FX6 which is easier to use for pro cinematographers.
      If the way you shoot is basic or if you really need something small that you can bring anywhere, FX3 will be great.

  • @GuyThomsonVideography
    @GuyThomsonVideography Рік тому +2

    Once you operate this camera in the field and learn it inside out, the pros vastly outweigh the cons.
    It becomes an extension of yourself.
    The reason there is play in the handle is so it doesn’t snap.
    You only need the one good codec not sure why you want a variety of rubbish ones.
    The difference in DCI and UHD is due to sensor size.
    Batteries are too expensive…?
    It’s not really the cameras fault if you buy slow cards 😂
    These complaints are very petty in my opinion and mostly ignorance on your behalf.
    People are never happy these days…

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  Рік тому +1

      Hey guy, I've been using the camera more and more, better understanding the quirks. I knew there would be some, coming from mirrorless cameras, so I made sure to write even the smallest gripe down. I know this probably comes off as petty (not my intention), but it was tough to come up with cons for this camera! One thing about the codecs, I feel like XAVC-L is a little light, and XAVC-I is a little heavy for some things. For example, filming a talking head that I might color correct/grade later, for longer shoots, the XAVC-I is going to fill cards much faster, times that by a full day of company talking heads and it takes longer to transfer footage and manage cards, when XAVC-L feels a little light in comparison? My solution now is just buy more cards and hard drives. Not suggesting worse codecs, but would be nice to have another option in between. Thanks for your feedback.

    • @lukastemberger
      @lukastemberger Рік тому

      @@keith-knittel for talking heads you don't really need an Intra codec. L will actually give you better quality than I because of a more efficient compression. Anything that doesn't have a whole lot of movement in the shot will benefit from the long GOP compression. Even if there's some movement (like handheld) it's fine since the compression algorithm uses motion vectors to discard redundant data.
      The only real life advantage of Intra in this situation is the fact that it's a 10bit file. But that only matters in high dynamic range scenes where you push the colors hard. For example when you have the sky in shot and don't want it to band when pushed. Slog3C will have plenty of color information in the L codec for a simple scene like talking heads with controlled lighting.
      Intra actually has a worse looking more compressed picture in almost all situations.
      There are only two differences in real life that Intra is good for though:
      - Pushing the colors hard when grading
      - A more natural looking grain in motion since it encodes each frame separately. If you inspect them one frame at a time, L actually compresses grain better, but has a tiny bit of smearing because of the Long GOP. Intra makes the grain look more muddy if you look at it one frame at a time, but when you look at it at 24fps, it looks more organic.

    • @keith-knittel
      @keith-knittel  Рік тому

      @@lukastemberger Thank you for the well-written feedback. For most everything I shoot, the XAVC-L will be fine. I never thought about I looking "worse" since it is recording every frame vs the compressed L. I'll have to do some tests between the two, that being said I've only recorded intra when I was filming cars or was trying to push the colors in post. Very interesting about the grain, that makes sense. I'm still relatively new with the FX6, but learning more everyday it seems. If you have any additional points about the FX6, I'm all ears. Thanks again for the great feedback.
