An edited down version of the 1987 Eurovision Song Contest in Brussels with a scoreboard using today’s technology. Nothing but a fun lockdown project.
This edit will give a flavour of the evening (9th May) with Terry Wogan’s commentary. I believe this is the first year I’ve watched where Wogan has become the act we came to know - he’s quick witted, warm, friendly even though some of the language is not 2020 friendly (comments on women). I also found there were lots of mircoedits in the UA-cam versions! I searched for the spectacular computer graphics at the start of the intro, including the logo formation, only to realise that they’ve been blocked for viewing outside of Belgium on copyright grounds...see below. My special edit goes to the UK entry which I thought sounded great, but out of the four favourites pre-Contest, fared the worst. I think this is the first time the UK ends up on the ‘right side of the board’...a phrase that’s only come about with the new reordering!
Now, well, look, all 22 of the 1980s gang turn up for the show! It also happened to be on the EEC’s 30th birthday! No one wanted to miss the party at the mothership, clearly. I know Morocco appeared in 1980, but they made a sharp exit, and Malta and Monaco were involved in the 1970s, but they don’t make an appearance in this decade.
This high turnout led to a new cap on the numbers - something that would cause issues in the early 1990s. Brussels based rules you say?! Well, despite all the warm wishes for the EEC’s future, things at home weren’t great. Belgium doesn’t have a national broadcaster as such: it has a French service and a Flemish speaking service. Each broadcaster takes it in turn to pick the Belgian entry...87 is sung in Flemish, 1986 in French (although this year gets away with an English title and hook). Anyway, both broadcasters were due to co-produce the show but it didn’t go well: disagreements in Brussels you say?! But RTBF went alone and produced a great show, with lasers, girders and geometric shapes...although not all shapes were from RTBF it seems. The blocked flying plane and rocket are claimed on UA-cam as copyright of the Flemish broadcaster...I assume it was VRT that provided these before the split, and they unfortunately appear over an RTBF logo. A sign of how bitter those disagreements must have been!
DESIGN AND THE BOARD
So this year is clearly all designed around the shapes that are prominent in early computer aided design - add a new fangled laser and you get a spectacular stage. It seems the scoreboard was a bit of ugly cousin that no one wanted. It doesn’t feature in the camera shots of the stage at all - Victor keeps looking to her hard left in order to view it...the vision desk then spun it on top of her via some sort of chroma key technique rather than show it in situ.
This was the last physical scoreboard in Eurovision. The rattling of the numbers changing is no more :-( For my design, I attempted to put a bit of a ‘physical board touch’ to the motion design, in tribute. More flipping! In fact, I was only going to flip every country and then I realised you really need the ascending country to fly up, otherwise you lose the visual language. I think it sort of works, but it’s not my favourite. I set the board in a 3D setting for a change, and to reflect what was going on on the stage. I feel this is perhaps what they would have liked to achieve if they had today’s technology.
Font wise, we go for utility. The lower thirds for the songs and names in the show had some really lovely design, including making them all right aligned. There was another script font, which I decided to eschew because it wouldn’t fit in many places, but the core font is Frutiger, designed by Swiss designer, Adrian Frutiger. Where have you seen it? Basically everywhere - it was designed in 1961-4 and is most famous in the UK for being the NHS font. You’ll see it in plenty of airports too...sort of ideal for the ‘physical board’ feeling - clear and legible.

BACK: Italy and Greece turn up for the party! With Iceland joining in 1986 we had 20 last year, plus these two makes: 22.

I would not be mad if they did the scoreboard like this in 2021. A brilliant job. Brilliant.
Ha ha thanks - I'm sure something more polish will be used. But if Eurovision is listening, I'm available.
How far Eurovision has come. Makes me feel nostalgia and privileged to have seen this era yet although when Eurovision had its early noughties puberty into what we see today and i was falling out with it, i feel the modern contest is a Eurovision better than ever. It had to change to survive and reach new audiences.
Yes, now it's more than a song contest, it's a three minute live pop video with lots of disciplines being taken into account and it's musically more relevant than ever. Here in the U.K in this week we have four entries from Eurovision in the top ten chart. Incredible! It's all (modernization) worthwhile to keep this annual Eurovision party going.
It’s always Germany trying to beat Johnny
I think she is receiving the scores through the earrings you know!! Brilliant!
Absolutely amazing job there on the scoreboard, I'm in total admiration.
I still can't believe how underrated Finland and Belgium were in this Eurovision!
Because Belgium presents a song in Dutch. She should sing in the 3rd language of the country, German to get points from Germany and Austria...
I love the flipping, it feels like I'm in a train station when I was younger. Gente Di Mare is a real classic, it should have at least be second! It was high up in a list of favourite Eurovision songs in the Netherlands and Belgium, one of the only non-winners, let alone a number 3!
Another lovely presentation thanks. I am a big fan of Viktor's two crazy outfits - I would have liked the pink dress with the latter headgear for a mind-blowing combination. Your graphic at the start of the voting is lovely. my favourite bit of the voting is the dodgy line to Turkey:
Viktor: "I can't hear you anymore. To which country are you giving three points?"
Turkey: "...THREE POINTS POINTS POIN"
My points for 87 (and I cannot vote for Ireland)
1pt Luxembourg
2pt Portugal
3pt Sweden
4pt Germany
5pt Norway
6pt Denmark
7pt Cyprus
8pt Finland
10pt Belgium
AND
Italy 12 points
Best performance of an encore at the end.. in terms of hugging, thanking, introducing words from the heart/mind "Come on Ireland, what do you say" "I can't sing anymore" haha etc. Johnny is the Legend!
Sweden’s caller sounds like he’s doesn’t care who wins this contest or he’s just really tired!!
Amazing mate!!well done.you must be a huge fan
As much as I like all your efforts posted, this is probably by favourite so far!
Thanks for the feedback - I was actually nervous this one didn't work so well. I'm beginning to think people prefer a grid solution...1985 seems to be liked too!
After Cyprus votes, there are 4 different ties on the board.
Italy & Denmark (68)
Greece & Israel (53)
Norway & Belgium (49)
France & UK (32)
That's just crazy to me.
Amazing job, thank you!
I can’t be the only person that’s surprised by Terry Wogan’s lack of commentary during the voting? I think he was just over Eurovision back in 87 haha
Shout-out to the Dutch spokesperson, whoever he is. I like that guy!
His name is Ralph Inbar - he is an Israeli that was working in the Dutch TV back than. later he came back here and work on the Israeli TV
He sounds like a high IQ person. I noticed that he stands out too.
@@SimsMoyal That explains his little bit of Hebrew when the Netherlands gives Israel a few points!
@@SuperJNG18 yes indeed - he was back here after a few years made a candid camera kind of show and a few others

Back in '87 Vasilis Dertilis' (the Greek synthesizer guy) family used to have the most frequented video club in our area. It was the time when the VHS was at its peak and everyone would rent video cassettes to watch movies at home (since there were only 2 state TV channels available). Right at the start of May '87 a notice was hooked on the closed door of the video club saying "We are sorry but the store will remain closed for 2 weeks due to our participation to the Eurovision Song Contest". This went absolutely viral at once all around. Till that moment I am not sure I knew what the ESC was actually all about, but this piece of news shook all the local society which made us wait in order to see what's going to happen. This was the actual motive for me to watch the contest for the first time. Vasilis was never around in the store but his sister Barbara was practically always there and you can take a quick glimpse of her in the audience right after the end of the Israeli song all dressed in white in the second line of seats. Good old days those were!!! (As I was totally ignorant, after the Swiss entry our commentator said "In 40 minutes we'll get to know who the winner is, let's go to the ads now..." and I thought "Boooh, I am not going to wait till then, I'm going to sleep". The next day my cousins informed me that I missed the best part because it's not just an announcement, there is a whole process to get to the results... For years after that I didn't have the slightest idea of what the greek jury had voted. When I checked the results I was astonished of their choices. Now I am so proud that we disregarded the favourites and took our time to estimate the Icelandic, the Portuguese and the Austrian song which are also between my fan favourites of the night. My only protest is about the fact that the greek jury missed to spot the King of the ESC songs, the Italian 87 entry).
My points are:
12 Italy 🇮🇹
10 Cyprus 🇨🇾
8 Norway 🇳🇴
7 The Netherlands 🇳🇱
6 Finland 🇫🇮
5 Austria 🇦🇹
4 Iceland 🇮🇸
3 Portugal 🇵🇹
2 Sweden 🇸🇪
1 Yougoslavia 🇭🇷
UK and France had an internal competition on who could do the most vibrato... measured by the Richter scale...
1. This is the first year i stayed the entire Eurovision (i was 8)
2. Funny thing is that i agreed with our juries - i really think Sweden was the best entry of 1987
3. You got it really good - i made something like that but not as pretty as yours
Thanks for sharing. I remember the contest well. I liked Italy Germany Denmark and the Netherlands the most.
13:05 BEAUTIFUL INTRO FOR LUXEMBOURG 🇱🇺 ❤🎉😊😮
Its been ... what 26 years now ... Im still in shock that Italy didnt win this!!! Italy had the best song of the night (by far) ... in fact, for me, Gente di mare is the best song that ever went to Eurovision EVER (and Im not Italian, i cant understand a word)
36 years...😀
Yay, Spain got copyrighted and muted. I feel like I've been spared some torture.
"Katie Boyle never sang did she?" - too right she didn't have to. Things were far simpler in those days and all the better for it.
Who misses the juries announcing their votes in French all over Europe ? Made it interesting, more colorful than today’s uniform culture of English predominance..
They still announce in French, so what do you miss?
@@th5841 many more countries did it, and they were also countries that didn't speak French as a national language
@@benfarmer-webb1016 I have nothing against it, but I don't miss it.
Greece was able to do it this year. First time since 1997.
LMAO and having French used by everyone would also not be dominant and boring? Stop with this weird, conservative, outdated, elitist boomer mentality.
Loreen is now Johnny Logan 2.0
Remember Johnny Logan has 3 wins under his belt! ... His 3rd win was 1992 (Songwriter for Linda Martin)
Yugoslavia was greatly underestimated in this vote!
Do more of this knd of ESC-scoreboards !!
Ya sam zaplèss🎼🎵💃🕺🎸...Yeaaah...Yugoslavia 12 points!
My votes: 1: Ireland 12, UK: 10, Yugoslavia: 8. Denmark: 7. Germany: 6. Switzerland: 5., Sweden : 4. Cyprus: 3. Finland: 2. France: 1.
Spain 🇪🇸 should of sent Vicky Larraz with Bravo Samurai and they should of sent Patricia Kraus to OTI.
A bit unrelated but the 80s were a train wreck in terms of fashion at Eurovision. I'm not sure if some of the outfits and hairstyles were considered trendy in their own time but from a 2021 perspective they just look ridiculous (for example the Norwegian singer's haircut or the Spanish woman's outfit and makeup). This of course has nothing to do with the quality of the songs or the live vocals, they are incredible in most cases.
A bit less unrelated: I just found your channel and I can definitely say I'm addicted to your videos. A similar idea has crossed my mind a couple times as well (I mean animating the scoreboard of older Eurovisions) but I don't know the first thing about graphic design. I'm really glad you've taken the time and effort to make these videos, they're absolutely amazing! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the comment Klaudia, I'm glad you're enjoying them! And yes, don't think that it hasn't gone unnoticed. I really enjoyed tracking the on set of the 80s through the first part - it's seems tastes got more and more 'out there' as we went on!
Well.... Obviously you are too young. Kate Guldbrandsen's choice is an exact copy of Cindy Lauper's (Time after time, Girls just want to have fun etc) haircut who was a big star back those days. Even being at 12 years when I saw the make up of the Spanish Patricia Kraus I said to myself "Oh, my!!! What on earth freak is that?" So you can understand, even for its own time it was way too much and off of any perception of aesthetics of that present time...

So the 80s in general were a trainwreck for fashion
Fantastic job. You noticed the same thing as I did about how we never see the position of the scoreboard in relation to the stage. All we know is it’s to the right (as Viktor looks to the left.) It can be glimpsed at the start of the end credits though. Other boards we never see in relation to the stage are 1967 and 1978.
I often wondered why RTBF didn’t roll out a computer scoreboard this year. Budget I guess. A physical board looks out of place on such a high-tech set.
I did just double check the credits to see whether WIGE-Data were credited, and they weren't explicitly named...they had been providing the boards in the mid-80s and I wonder if they were the reason the physical board stayed. That's weak theory though - I think WIGE did the following computerised effort in 88. I expect the cause is probably price, as you said - or that there was more knowledge at the VRT end of the production (the computer animations at the beginning were copyrighted by them, so I assume they own it) and RTBF just went with what they knew best once it was just them.
thereorderboard : Eurovision or Viktor’s earrings dried up the budget!! Do you have a favourite 80s or 90s scoreboard?
From real life? I think my favourite physical scoreboard from the 80s is the German one, it fitted into the set the nicest and had a lovely sound when the leading score was flashing! The early 'graphical' ones are hard to love I think but RTÉ obviously found a standard that worked. My favourite is 98 and 99...and 00 lol! All built by the same BBC team as far as I know.
thereorderboard : Eurovision the 1983 scoreboard is quite small though. And I think most physical scoreboards tended to be noisy. 1986 is really noisy!
Even more interesting in the "war" between VRT and RTBF is that this HD recording comes from Canvas, the VRT's second channel, so it seems they at least have the rights to broadcast it nowadays...
wat was dat eens geweldig
Who give the points for Holland?
First ever use of a jib cam at Eurovision, if I'm not mistaken.

Yes I'm sorry about that - it's a Copyright claim on the German entry of all things! It's blocked in all of North America. I'll make an edit of just the scoring sequence and upload that very soon - it seems a shame to mute just the one song.

@@thereorderboard Thanks for answering. You have done amazing work. Just recently discovered your channel. It is awesome. Thank you.
As many keen Eurovision watchers may notice, Greece give Cyprus maximum points (as they have done many times since, and vice versa). Many people have commented on this mutual backslapping over the years: but what I find more noteworthy is the fact that Greece give Turkey NOTHING (and the feeling is mutual! This despite Greece and Turkey both being members of NATO!).
Well the very next year Turkey gave their first 3 points to Greece and it took 10 years for Greece to give their first 7 points to Turkey, as I saw it happening right in front of my eyes.
