    Hi. Thanks for the kind words. Yes, the 9500/10500 SSV are both rated to hold #80 braid and have 40lbs of drag pressure. Both models would be plenty to handle a 220+ lb catfish. We appreciate your support.

    The "threshold" for "made in USA" on Penn reels is about $249 retail.
    Although it varies a bit, the "threshold" for "made in Japan" from the various Japanese mfrs is about $349, otherwise they are also made in China, Malaysia, Viet Nam, etc.

    My 6500 has been a beast. I've caught several 60+ inch sharks. Several nice grouper, and a few 40+ inch redfish. I also use a 4500 slammer 3. I love my penn reels. Would love to see stainless steel main gear and pinion gear across the board. As well as the power knob like the slammer has. The power knob would be a great addition to the spinfisher.

    The "threshold" for "made in USA" for Penn reels is at about $249 retail, and the models above that price are indeed produced in the Philadelphia plant.
    The SSV reels range from $139-$199.
    The Penn spinning reel series that is US-made is the Torque TRQ series [9 models]

    For the wind knots yes the number one reason for wind knots is over filling the spool with line. The SSV's comes with line capacity rings so if you fill the spool up to the outer most line then you should not have any issues with wind knots. If you go past the outer most line then you will most likely have issues.

    The launch date for the LL models was scheduled for January and we have been shipping these models as promised but the demand is much greater than the supply at the moment. Please keep checking your local dealer or even check around on line as there are some stores that have these reels in stock. Thanks for the support.

    Not every reel will come out the box with a perfect line lay that is why we put two plastic washers in the box so that you can shim the spool for better line lay if needed. Detailed directions are in the owner’s manual on how to install the washers.

    I Thank You for the quick reply. I think these were the last series before they were sent to the asian market for manufacture ? Always wanted to add a new reel but couldn't justify the expense when I had my greenies and never replaced any parts on them. Amazing, especially when I have seen failures on the jetty or beach or through discussions of drags failing or gears being crunched by different manufacturers of newer equipment reels. And I never had a bail snap back losing any plugs. I and several other old timers with the old Penn greenies and some Mitchells would look at each other and chuckle listening to some guys curse their reels up and down at what they cost them and losing that striper. I have watched someone open up a Chinese reel of popular name only to see him remove roughly 40 pieces or so for a good cleaning and re-lube. I swear they make a throwaway so you buy another. I merely remove under ten pieces, clean, grease and assemble all in under one hour while enjoying a cup of coffee. Good solid made parts. I know the new reels are smooth and all with so many bearings, but I feel proud to see my reels on the beach vs. those shiny new alloy reels sparking in the morning sun.. There are some 550ss and 650ss in good looking condition on ebay roughly around $80.00 plus shipping. But I also see some 704's for $60 to $70.00. Really? I say I have a good investment in my shed. Contemplating whether i should buy one or not. A couple of the guys gave me that stare down when I mentioned I was looking to add one to a lonely 10' pole I have home. But as long as it's a US made Penn I should be welcomes to fish shoulder to shoulder with them. It's a family thing I guess you could say. Cheers and Tight Lines to all.

    Great question. Yes, the new 3500 Spinfisher V is replacing the 4th Generation Spinfisher (430 SSg) and the Slammer 360. Also, the 3500 is similar to the Battle 3000 in size and line capacities. In addition, the 3500 is the smallest Spinfisher in the new series.

    Penn currently makes over 30 different reel models in the USA, along with another 11 "stock" color/bail options, plus everything in the "Custom Color Shop". Two new "USA models were introduced at the ICAST Show this week, and at least 4 more USA models will be introduced at next year's show.

    LL stands for Live Liner and is built for live bait fishing. It has a switch you can flip to disengage the front drag to allow the bait to swim freely for the most natural presentation. It automatically re-engages when you reel in.

  • @tunanorth
    @tunanorth 11 років тому

    You don't specify what size line you plan to use or you have a preferred rod length, but the Penn Bluewater Carnage CARJG2050S70 can handle large fish and heavy drag, but is still light enough to be fun and cast smaller lures if necessary, and would balance well with a SSV4500.

    Penn makes over 30 different reel models in the USA, plus another 11 "stock" bail/color options, plus everything in the "Custom Shop" is made right in Philadelphia. Two new "USA" models came out this year, and at least 5 new "USA" models will come out in 2013.

  • @tunanorth
    @tunanorth 11 років тому

    Hi Thang,
    There are at least a dozen new SSV models; too many to all come out at once. The smaller sizes came out in the fall of 2012. The larger sizes and all of the "Liveliner" models were always scheduled for early 2013 introduction. Hopefully they will be in stores soon. In late 2013 you should also see a "longcast spool" model, and also a "bail-less" model.

    I fish Tribs for salmon , I don’t need the saltwater protection but it helps ? I need the drag more than anything and these reels perform flawlessly ..... I have the 3500 for the little guys and the 5500 spinfisher V and the 5500 penn slammer III all with an extra spool for the big Kings when they move in . I lightly clean my reels and put a drop of oil here and there on occasion and have never had a problem ever . Mind you I am nowhere near pushing these reels to there limits . Oh I also have an older penn slammer 560 and the original penn battle that I have passed down to my son both of which are still like new after hundreds and hundreds of salmon . Greased the drags for him and upgraded the slammer 560 with carbontex and there’s no doubt he will one day be passing all of these reels down to his children . Penn is second to none when it comes to reliability ..... you might not get the smoothest but when your a 4 mile walk from your vehicle you trust the durability more than anything .

    The drags on the SSV's make plenty of noise. If you have a reel and the drag clicker is not very loud check under the spool and remove some of the grease from the clicker mechanism as the grease acts as a muffle.

    the "threshold" for "Made in USA" on Penn is at $249. For the various Japanese mfrs, the "threshold" for "made in Japan" is around $349; all reels below that line are made in China, Malaysia, Viet Nam, etc.

  • @tunanorth
    @tunanorth 11 років тому

    Tough to get one rod that does both of those well, but the Bluewater Carnage Jigging Rod CARJG65100S64 or CARJG80-130S60 do a great job of holding big fish out of the rigs, and the CARBW3050S70 casts well for most inshore/offshore species.

  • @PENNfishing
    @PENNfishing  12 років тому

    This is really hard to answer because you have so many things to consider. The size of the reel, the rod that you are using, the line that you are using all play a big role in how far you can cast a 1 oz plug.

    The smallest size is the SSV3500, which holds 210 yards of 8-pound monofilament, or 165 yards of 20-pound braid. perfect for inland stripers, most catfish, and light-duty surfcasting.

    I grew up with and still have and fish with my old 710 greenies and a 704, just basic wash down my at the end of day and opened and cleaned and re-greased every December as I slow down beach/jetty fishing. Am much older now and would like to find that sweet spot in between a 710 and 704, preferably in the ss series. So would the 550ss, 650ss or 750ss be that sweet spot with a 10 or 11' pole. ?

    • @PENNfishing
      @PENNfishing  8 років тому +1

      +roadrunner Appreciate your support and loyalty, roadrunner. The 550ss would be the closest in size between the 710 and 704, however the 650ss would be a better pairing to a 10’-11’ rod. The metal SS series was discontinued over 25 years ago though, you'l need to look on EBay or shop the swap meets to purchase one.

    Penn's "threshold" for made in USA is at about $249. This SSV series runs $139-$199, and so are Chinese production. the Penn Torque TRQ series spinning reels [9 models] are USA production, but are of course a little more expensive than the SSV's.

  • @tunanorth
    @tunanorth 12 років тому

    The "threshold" for "Made in USA" on Penn reels is $249; the Penn Torque spinning reel series [3 different sizes, 5, 7, 9, plus bail or no bail options] is indeed "Made in USA", right in the Philadelphia plant where they have always been bade. Reels under $200 are still quite popular; the choice is make the offshore or simply stop making them.

    I would say a SSV5500 would ge a good size for surf fishing but would be a little big for throwing small artificail lures like DOA's. I would say you would need a SSV3500 or SSV4500 on a Legion or Regiment (LEGIN815S70 or REGIN815S70) inshore rod for light artifical use and then for surf fishing I would suggest looking at the Prevail series of rods for the SSV5500. The PRESF1220S90 would be a perfect surf combo.

  • @PENNfishing

      Hi Brad, you can land on the size that's right for you based on the pound test of line you'd like to fish. The SSV 5500 is rated for 10-15# mono or 20-40# braid. Our website shows the full specs for each reel, pennfishing.com, just let us know if you have further questions.

      PENNfishing ... I fish slow but strong current in the Red River of North Dakota I usually use between 10 pound and 20 pound model or 20 to 40 pound braid and I need at least 250 yards of mono or braid. when the fish get into the current it's hard to bring them back through to my side. sometimes you hook into a great big catfish so I need a good reel to aid in stopping that.

    i have a question. will you be able to switch the current drag on the spinfisher v to the dura drag that is on the slammer 3. the slammer 3 drag system looks a little more durable.

    Would you say this is superior to the Battle? Also, I'm looking for a good reel for tapon fishing the surf, one that can stand up to a heavy fish with plenty of line and also endure tough saltwater and sand conditions-is this the reel? If so, what size would you reccomend?

    I have a Penn 716 spinfisher (greenie) that I've used for 20 years , I've often wondered what year those were produced? I'm pretty sure it's Penn's original model.

      Hi, Heather. Wow, that's great! The 716 Spinfisher was first introduced in 1976.

    The SSV5500 and SSV6500 would be the best size for Blues and Striped bass.

    I have 2 penn spinfisher 8000LL
    is there anyway to loosen or remove the rear drag I don't want the fish to feel any tension I fish for alligator gar and want the live line to be super smooth with zero tension

    • @tunanorth
      @tunanorth 7 років тому +1

      Unfortunately, there is no way to make the Live-Liner tension any less than what you can get by dialing it all the way back.

    • @PENNfishing
      @PENNfishing  7 років тому +1

      ThHi, Eddie. This rear drag is set at a light drag almost 0, but you can loosen it by turning it counter clock-wise, and you would to set it to your feel/liking.

    Which recommend for boat fishing and surfs sting i was planning to buy the Spinfisher 8500.

    • @PENNfishing
      @PENNfishing  7 років тому +1

      The Spinfisher 8500 will work great. The PENN Spinfisher V features our Water Tight Design so whether you dunk the reel in the surf, or let it ride in the spray all the way home, you don’t have to worry about saltwater getting into the gearbox or drag system.

    I would look at the Legion and Regiment inshore series of rods. Any of the 8-15 and 10-17lb rods in both series would be a perfect match for the SSV4500.

  • @PENNfishing
    @PENNfishing  11 років тому

    What type of fishing will you be doing with the SSV5500? Will you be using mono or braid? We make several rods at various price points for almost all applications.
