The best are village weddings back there... in Ukraine we had party for 3 days too... Perogies, fish, meat... And SAMOGON (home made vodka, in polish it's same name)! Miamy!
The first time I saw Gogol Bordello live, the opening band was Brazilian. During Gogol‘s set, the opening band came out to jam out on this song, though they played it in more of a samba style, which was super rad.
I went to an Ukranian-American wedding once and it was a blast. There were groups of dancers with complicated choreography competing against each other. They were a joy to watch.
I am from the US but of Eastern European decent and I'm actually getting married. With both my mother and soon to be mother-in-law butting heads on how the wedding should be, this song comes to mind.
bendietrees lol Thanks, we got married 3 weeks ago and it turned out great! We had some relatives fly in and we did our cultural dance, played American music, and then had a rave with glowsticks and all. It was a blast and everyone had a great time. I am just glad it is finally over...for now! Until we have kids when their difference in religion being Catholic and Muslim will really come into play!
It sounds like it was a nice blend! I don't envy you when kids come into play....lol. My family is also Eastern European but I was born in America so I hear you.
I love this song! My grandparents came from Russia and Ukraine and our family weddings were loud and lively. It never occurred to me that these celebrations were not typical American weddings until I moved to the Midwestern USA for graduate school where I attended my first “American wedding. It was in the basement of a church. They served soft drinks and wedding cake. That was it. I found myself asking the same questions which Eugene asks in this song. “Where’s the vodka, the caviar, the herring, the music and dancing?” Definitely not my idea of a celebration!
Funny last wedding I went to was Irish American. No one just sat down Jameson and Jack flowed like tap water. And the couple danced to the Rum Jacks green ginger wine. Every other song was Iggy Pop Gol go bordelo and flogging moly.
You should ask! I'm going to when the day comes. I figure, me being married is such a fucking long shot, that I totally deserve to do it up gypsy style. My neighbors hate me anyway 😅
Have you ever been to American wedding? Where is the vodka, where is marinated herring? Where is the musicians that got the taste? Where's the supply that's gonna last three days? Where's the band that like fanfare? Gonna keep it going 24 hour Instead it's 1 in the morning and DJ's patching up the chords Everybody's full of cake, staring at the floor Proper couples start to mumble that it's time to go People gotta get up early and they gotta go Ah, people gotta get up early and she's got a boyfriend And this whole fucking thing is one huge disappointment And nothing gets these bitches going, not even gypsy kings Nobody talks about my super theory of super everything So be Donald Trump or be an anarchist Make sure that your wedding doesn't end up like this I understand the cultures of a different kind But here word celebration just doesn't come to mind Have you ever been to American wedding? Where is the vodka, where is marinated herring? Where is the musicians that got the taste? Where's the supply that's gonna last three days? Where's the band that like fanfare? Gonna keep it going 24 hour
I appreciate the sentiment. I have been to many boring weddings. My wedding party, however, was a 3 day rager on the lake. There was booze flowing, music blaring, people fucking, amazing food, and terrible hangovers. It was epic. One of our friends put on a similar show last year when she got married. All I'm saying is, we aren't all boring.
For those who are confused with mentioning Trump in this song: if you don't know he is one of the most known people in real estate business. No politics here, just comparing two absolutely different things: a real estate mogul and an anarchist... nothing else.
Twenty years ago I saw them live in Baltimore omg omg. Btw Frank Zappa came from Baltimore and there’s a broze bust of him in the middle of a street in Baltimore. Just sayin.
Woah I'd hate to be an American who had invited Eugene to my wedding before this song came out. Evidently the experience was so awful he decided to write a song about it....
+killpowernotpeople he's writing about how much he enjoyed american weddings and how he wished other cultures followed its example of being massive and crazy.
guess you guys are right i listened to it with your ideas in mind and i admit it makes sense. i had always assumed he was at a ukrainian wedding and was complaining it wasn't like american weddings but i also agree it works as a song about complaining about american weddings.I guess you guys are right.sorry if i came off as a dick before i was just sharing my opinion of what i thought the song was about
u came off as an idiot rather than a dick. the first sentence he sings is 'where is the vodka? where is the marinated herring? Both things present in everyday Russian life and non-existent American culture. America = beer and fastf ood - Russia = vodka potatoes and marinated herring.
This music remember me a episode from 90 day fiancée from TLC. In this episode a Russian girl and a mormon guy married, the girl's father asking for alchool
I grew up in Russia, married a Ukrainian. We live in Canada, our first North American wedding that we attended was a cultural shock! We were asking the same questions and the word "celebration" just didn't come to mind! In my imagination, I was, just like Eugene, wanting to climb up on a table infront of a bride and groom and bang my fist on the table. If I didn't know that was a wedding celebration, I'd confuse it with a funeral, seriously. The funnest weddings we've been to in Canada, were immigrants' weddings! I do not attended local, traditional weddings after being to a few, just send gifts and congrats.
I am polish and I confirm. We do have 3 days vodka supply and marinated herrings ! Everybody's welcomed !!! Gogol never disappoints
Polish Catholic weddings in America are pretty wild, but nothing like the original. Everyone dances. Everyone drinks. Even grandma.

I'll say it again. African American weddings are amazing. My family is Creole, and I have cousins whose weddings no one remembers (Not even grandma.)
I am from the US but of Eastern European decent and I'm actually getting married. With both my mother and soon to be mother-in-law butting heads on how the wedding should be, this song comes to mind.

I wish Gogol Bordello played my wedding
Right, when I think about my future wedding, I look at my friends... Then get sad because they are boring. Lmao.
Right? Maybe she would have stayed......
You can totally hire them.
