I never though the harpsichord can convey the profundity of this supreme masterpiece almost as effectively as the modern grand piano. This harpsichord rendition by Richter in some respects is superior to the average piano version because 1) it's surprisingly and ironically, relatively ornamentation-free and 2) the prominence of the left hand voices, giving a sense of balance as many pianists are "right-handed" even in playing Bach. The tempo is just perfect for me, and I consider it the typical tempo for a Bach keyboard piece.
What i really find funny is that the more recent up to date digital equipment of this 21st century is totallly unable to reproduce the sound of a real harpsichord built some hundreds years ago ... and they dare to talk about progress ... LOL ROF PMP ! (Laughing Out Loud Rolling On the Floor Pissing My Pants) ;°)))
Wonderful! But fatiguing on the harpsichord. (I owned a harpsichord.) Would much rather hear this on a modern piano. Presumably so would Sebastian Bach.
Seeing as Bach played clavichords, pianos, harpsichords, organs, and all kinds of stringed instruments, I personally believe that Bach would not prefer to hear the music played on any specific instrument but rather the highest quality instruments one has access to be that a clavichord, harpsichord, or piano. I believe he would encourage that one plays such music on clavichords, harpsichords, and pianos as all three require different approaches. I personally prefer the music on the harpsichord or clavichord as I prefer their tones, feelings, and techniques used to make good music on them, and I have smaller hands that are well suited to a harpsichord. To add to that, historical style harpsichords have a very light action with minimal effort and pressure required to make a note sound, therefore I have trouble seeing how such music can be fatiguing on at least a historical style instrument. However on a "revival" type of the modern style, I can see how it would be fatiguing.
@@robertgift I personally am partial to the older style pianos of the 1700's and early 1800's, however Bach commented on the early pianos, stating that their treble and bass were too weak and the action too heavy. Based on these statements it is likely he would approve of modern pianos and their range.
