- Lots to discuss following the match between the Boks and Wales at Twickenham. The first game for the World Champions since lifting that crown and the first game for Warren Gatland's men since getting white-washed in the Six Nations.
Aphelele Fassi under the high ball was a gem 💎
A Legend in the making!
@@nadinelund5681I keep telling people fassie got yellow card every second game in urc he is prone to yellow cards dats what he is next tym we wont be so lucky if we get a formidable opponent
Job of fullback not only catching high balls. Fassi did not impress in other areas.
Ja but he's being hanging out with the instructor from the Karate Kid. He needs to be careful.
Typical blacky fckd up alot
Wales just never stops coming at their opponents. Respect 💚💛🇿🇦
Thank you brother 🏴 🤝🇿🇦
Defense was insane!!
I was Twickenham today and got to fulfill one of my sports bucket lists and see Wales play South Africa (and see one of my favourite players Kwagga) in person really enjoyed the Rugby. PSDT and Dewi Lake (the moistest man in rugby 😉) were both great captains.
Congrats on the well-earned win South Africa and eternal respect to the Bokke and Rassie from a Wales supporter. Cymru am Byth!
@@SimplyVee96Nie H.O de Villiers, Dawie Snyman,Johan Heunis of André Joubert sou n hoë bal beter kon vang as Fassi. In fact I counted him catching 9 high ball's and one resulted in Edwil Vd Merwe try! I watched quite a lot of rugby since 1970 and have never seen any fullback ever having a 100% record under high ball. Nether any all black or any other international player.
I think Wales are going to give Australia a hard time! They have plenty to build on before the next game and will only improve.
South African supporter. Born in Wales. Came to SA at the age of 21. ❤Thanks for your rugby content truly the best. Just a heads up for your visit here Tim. It's colder in Krugersdorp than Pretoria and Gauteng come prepared. It's such a wonderful country and the people are amazing. Looking forward to hearing your podcast on SA v Ireland.
Hi. I’m from Pretoria. Love your take on the game of rugby. You are building up a good following down here. Enjoying your channel since the World Cup
"Rugby getting in the way of a good afternoon of the TMO", that tickled my funny bone 😂
heard that too, but his on point with that one!
I was at the game, the South African fans where great. So Friendly and so positive about Wales even though they smashed us.
Enjoy your time in SA!! I hope you have a truly wonderful time!
One of the best sport channels out there. Fair and constructive. From a saffa 🇿🇦
As a South African supporter I was a bit nervous at half time. Yes Springboks looked rusty but first game as a unit this season.
I was saying to my friend, we maybe need to think about a preseason friendly against a team like Chile, Uruguay or Romania. Just to get those initial jitters out.
The gap from WC/Autumn intl to summer tests/Rugby Champ is too long. Any test is better than going straight in to vital test series for any team. 6 Nations till summer while shorter is still requiring at least a warm up test.
This is especially important if you still have players in Europe who are in the finals stages of their domestic teams competition as there is still today.
@@saints16o5o87 This is true, it does feel a bit long, but bit there are all sorts of other factors that might affect the feasibility of extending the test window:
- Remember that the European teams are really close together and traveling time is equivalent to the time it takes to make a cup of tea. Your wife and kids can easily make the trip from London to Cardiff. In the SH, this means time away from families, extended stay overseas etc.
- Players unions. Any decision you make regarding where and when which tests are played have to be taken up with them and they need to sign off on it. This means several countries with their own unions all agree. If one changes something (like the test window) other unions might fight against this.
- NH teams tour here at June/July because if they come any later (even late winter) they will probably melt
- SH sides have won 9 out of 10 world cups. Why change the formula if we are this dominant?
Nonetheless, I think there is a simple solution: why can't we field a team like SA "A" play a few games against some nations that struggle to get tests. Play those guys you want to debut etc and see how they do against Japan, Fiji or Samoa. Or if they want the game to be a test, call it a test.
Congratulations mate, i expected us to lose with such a young inexperienced squad but I think they did far better than i anticipated regardless of the score.
Good luck against Ireland buddy
We've often lost first games of the season, think we should have played Portugal first, then Wales... Before the Irish
Love your analysis on the games mate! South African here. Yours and Big Jim's channels are excellent!
You hit the nail on the head and I’m glad you talking about it! World Rugby keeps saying they changing laws to speed up the game, but the unnecessary use of the TMO is wasting far more time and slowing the game down a lot more than scrums are.
"Be the best at the things that require no skill" 🤣🤣🤣
Excellent visual comparison - Koch/Mr Incredible.
Rassie's team choice displays his main goal which is building the next World Cup team. Rather be on it early than late.
Great breakdown of the game once again and kudos to you on getting all those pronounciations right!
Well done Bokke!
You did us proud. 💪🥇🇿🇦🏈
Your channel is good for rugby! Can't wait to have you in the RSA! Hope we live up to your expectations!
You will love SA Tim. The “gees” at matches is electrifying.
"Gees" translates to "spirit" like the good atmosphere, the good spirit amongst South African rugby folk.
Kriel is a superstar.
Thanks Tim. Agree overall.
- whilst the captaincy in the bok team is a shared one amongst the senior cohort, it lacked energy under PSDT. I say this with deep respect for the man and his skills. I feel he is best left to roam and create advantage over managing the game.
2. The tryouts for the most part on the Bok side showed immense promise - you say rusty I say lack of cohesion and identity. They need time.
3. Evan Roos, not for the first time I believe, has been too self absorbed, generally lacking warrior instinct. Cameron H will soon be on his tail. Roos lacks rugby IQ in the moment.
3. Edwill v/d Merwe is heading for stardom. Humble, open, talented and fearless.
4. Sacha F-M has talent in spades, needs some space to explore. In 3 months he will be pressurizing Libbok for 10. If Pollard comes in strong and fit, then I think he could do very well under his wing.
As always thanks for the prompt and clear rapportage.
Welcome to SA. Travel safely
Jesse Kriel was full on attack mode with his tackles
It looked more like a training session for SA, good to see the young guys getting a run out. Fasi, Edwin and Sasha played well
"Wales on rollerskates going backwards" Classic line. Patent that one, Tim!
Rassie is locked into the next world cup. Everything that the Boks will do from here on in is geared towards having optimum depth and confidence in all departments by the time the big show rolls around. He is a scary judge of talent.
Tony Brown: lots of tricks and unexpectedness coming. In the longer time frame, he's going to have a field season with those backline athletes. Magic is coming, no doubt.
Wales were better than anticipated. Still a lot needs to change for the Irish. But have faith in Rassie. But Masuku really needs a look in
Agree 100%
LOTS of people saying the same about Masuku.
@@EggchasersRugby been saying it since team was announced
Masuku has something about him but after watching Sacha play today and how young he is combined with the flyhalves we already have, I think a handful of really good games for the Sharks is not really meriting him playing anytime soon. Especially not in the upcoming Ireland games or in big games in RC.
@business3867 SFM had not played at FH position in 2years what merits him playing? Masuku is legit and has more than a "couple "good games, they're both ahead of Manie L respectfully
Congratulations on your 600th video.
I didn't even notice that. Thanks!
The 23 was selected on merit, but they needed to manage the game time of the 'rookies' so some of them started ... De Allende will start v Ireland ... the first half debacle was a lack of teamwork, a new Tony Brown 'quick hands deep' attack, bad decision-making and this was the first game as new combinations except for the tight five .... at the half Rassie reminded them of their mortality and they were a different team when they came out the tunnel for the second half. Marx still a little rusty, PTSD was a little slow, Evan Roos is going to have to play a bit better to compete with Hanekom and Fassi is simply majestic in the air ... all in all I think Rassie has data points for his Ireland Squad. Check.
I think it’s safe to say Sacha is a brilliant kicker. For him to kick a 50m+ kick on debut is magnificent. As for Jordan Hendrikse he still has a lot of work to do. A.Fassi was brilliant under the high ball & he’s attacking abilities is extremely good. & Edwill van der Merwe is just a beast
Jordan Hendrikse maybe the 5th best flyhalf in SA at the moment.
Love your channel and comments. Always so positive!
The most impressive bit is that you're the first non-South African that I heard, reporting on this game, that managed to pronounce Evan Roos' surname correctly! Such a short name but no one got it right!
How did you know?! 😂
SA scrums were EPIC. So good to see !!
You are the best game analyst I have ever watched. I have been following you for about 6 months. I look forward to each pre and post game comment.
Would note that Hendrickse runs laterally every time he gets the ball. This puts the whole backline under pressure and erodes space.
That's why we said, don't underestimate Wales. Because yes! They did play their harts out. Well done my Bok brothers💪🏼❤️
Thank you. Great insight and analysis of the game. I appreciate your commentary
The ref made some strange decisions
He made a lot of terrible decisions.
Agree questionable. I am a saffa but question the yellow against Walsh left wing and the fassi's yellow.
At the end of the day a great win for the Boks and potm debut van der merwe.
@@annettekolb3103The yellow against the Welsh wing was for a cynical offside on the try line, easy yellow.
@jameswyatt4443 yeah but the ref was card happy today
@@annettekolb3103 How?
Really enjoy the channel!! As a South African it's good to hear some honest unbiased opinions. Also unsure about the Manie Libbok omission, but Hendrikse has had a great season and earned his opportunity. Maybe didn't earn another start with his performance, but one to watch. Manie had some rough starts too, so might be a good back up going forward.
This was an amazing game. As a South African i didn't enjoy that the tri was awarded. It changed the Wales momentum. But you could say also about decisions made by ref in Wales' favour. Wales showed tenacity, discipline and how great control over their scrums and rucks. They do have a problem with guys being offside. But that can easily be fixed. South Africa just had the right guys in the right spots. Well done Wales and Great work Boks. So proud to be South African.
Can't wait to have you this side my guy. I love your channel. You going to enjoy craven week, these kids are on another level. Hope you have a great time in SA. I'm in Cape Town and will be watching the SA VS Ireland game from home enjoying a good old braai, beers and good company. Feel free to reach out if you need anything while you here. Cheers
Great synopsis, thanks Tim. To touch on some of your points..
You are spot on, the TMO came into the game far too often. Too.many stoppages for TMO and referee reviews. World Rugby made such a big deal about wanting to speed the game up to make it more entertaining, but then the ref and TMO grind it down to a whistle blowing tedious affair. The best matches are those where the ref and TMO do not become the central figures of a drama.
Then onto the influence of Tony Brown. Wow wow wow. Springboks are going to be incredibly dangerous when Tony Brown's attacking style of play becomes second nature to the team. If they do not lose their impressive defensive capabilities entrenched by Jacques, but add this attacking style to their game plan... well as a Bok supporter I am thrilled for what the future of Springbok rugby promises. They are on the path to becoming a brilliant all-round team. With their obvious prowess in the scrum, adding that attacking game to the backline... yes please
Could see bits of NZ influence in the tactics from the boks. Interesting to see how that develops overthe season
Brilliant review as always, Tim. Agree 100% with all your takes. In fact, it felt as if you were reading my mind! Love the bits of humour thrown in, too. Have a wonderful time in beautiful SA and stay alert and safe. Pity it's winter atm, as it can be cold and wet, but the warmth of our people should blow you away. South Africans are a passionate bunch who love rugby (as if you don't know🤣), are vibrant, warm, colourful, soulful, resilient, and welcoming. I'm sure you'll feel the spirit and enjoy the hospitality and culture. Hope you'll be visiting my hometown, magnificent Cape Town (miss it so much!). There's so much to see and do in our amazing country (besides incredible rugby), so hope you get to experience all it has to offer... else you may need to return (several times!!). I consider you an honorary South African (sure many of your fans do) and just love the way you've embraced our outstanding rugby players, coaches, supporters and our nation. Look forward to hearing all your podcasts, and especially excited about the podcasts you'll be doing while in SA. Thanks for an excellent rugby channel. 🙏
U should come to cape town south africa....u wille enjoy it❤
Got up this morning, went to your channel and BOOM, a video. Great way to start the day.
World Rugby wanted to speed up the game, but all the referrals and TMO intervention just halted the game numerous times. Much more disruptive than just resetting a scrum. Aside from the scrums, I think the calls were generally good.
The back line showed flashes of what is possible. I can't tell you how exciting it is to have Tony Brown involved with the Bok squad.
Safe travels Tim! Looking forward to having you in SA.
This channel is my go to just because of how quickly you drop the videos.
Baie goeie bespreking ! Groete uit Lima Peru!
Great podcast think you hit the nail on the head
I thought it was a little sad walking through London, and I must have seen 50+ people with South African jerseys at least, they were everywhere. I saw 2 people wearing Welsh jerseys the whole time.
The South Africans normally start their season that way. I will not read to much into that game. The newbies didn't really impress except for Fassi and Enwil van Merve really impressed 🎉they will have to up their game against Ireland but fortunately by that time they will have all the ammunition available to them. Wales didn't do bad at all but I expected that! Wales can take some positives from that game. We will bag that one but move on to the next! 🎉
We spent more time in the bunker than Adolf and Eva.
😅😅
🤣
Yoh
Brilliant 👏
Mate
Videos always class mate. Discovered your videos last year before the world cup and always enjoy your insights. Looking forward to what you put out in South Africa 👌
South Africa's fast start made them complacent and overconfident ... and the refereeing was well below par again, especially at the scrums.
Welcome to South Africa! All you comments are spot on!
What about fassi he was excellent under the high ball! Where do you think he stands for the Irish tests?
Tim NAILED it. If this new TMO intervention level is the norm it will massively slow down the game. Couldn't believe how slow it felt to make decisions. Some of the scrum decisions against SA were kind of odd as well.
First time watching the channel. Great take on the game. Well done. I’m subscribing. 🇿🇦
Wales played really well,South Africa looked shaky at best, and we're lucky the Welsh lost there way abit in the second half, otherwise the result could have been quite different, the tmo was also way overboard, but the forward passes and things that weren't called was disappointing
Agree with you Scott. TMO's overboard where perhaps they didn't need to then missed the things that mattered??
@@EggchasersRugbyI'm a Bok supporter but why on earth when he was right there did the touch judge not flag the forward pass for Mapimpi's try? The mind boggles! Had we not won, Rassie could have produced a 2 hour video on the refereeing decisions!
Poor Estherhuizen, having to play 2nd receiver to Jordan Hendrikse 😢😂
Love the channel. Welshman gives sincere congrats to the Boks. If you compare the performances in the last 6 nations to this, I conclude that Gats is team buildng and getting results. Much more confident, Wainwright, Carter, Ellis, Lake but still waiting for Dyer, Grady to actually impress. They need a lesson in guile from Liam W.
Out of all European countries I think they have the most potential to be number one in the northern hemisphere they have the 🔥
Brilliant orsome, game, from, strength to strength
Liam Williams continued to prove his value in a Wales shirt, he was imperious in the air - especially in heavy traffic
Always great perspective Tim.
I always look forward to your analysis post games. Thank you, I appreciate your channel 😎👊🏽🇿🇦
Hope to bump into you on July 6 in Loftus 😊
Hi Tim. Thanks again for your unbiased review. Subscriber from Pretoria
That Vincent Koch - Mr Incredible always cracks me up
Wales did well. Really well. Respect to them. Gats has started the rebuilding process and there's a lot to work with. Ref was good. Springboks, certain players were very quiet. Esterhuizen, Etzebeth, Marx were all quiet by their usual standards. Marx played he's first game since the opening match of rwc 2023 against Scotland and knowing him, as I've known him all he's life, he will be working hard in the next two weeks for the Ireland series but on tonight's form Bongi will be in the starting lineup at 2. Overall, some questions were answered but a few new ones have cropped up.
Class did indeed tell in the end, great atmosphere at Twickenham from a strong saffas crowd, their in numbers and South Africa were worthy winners but Wales gave it their all and big nod to Adam Wainwright, never stopped running the ball back and made really hard yards, Barbarians v Fiji well worth the money.
Expected a bit more from the Boks. Pleased with v d Merwe player of the match award. Sacha looks to have what is reqired of an international 10. Lots to do before the Irish arrive.
Your takes on the Ref and TMO in this much-interrupted; stop-start game were exactly the same as mine; so I must be an ex-spurt too ! Seriously; if THIS is what the the future of Rugga is to be ( Repeatedly reducing real-time to the nano-second and / or every rugby-incident to minute degrees-of ); shouting * Make A Decent Decision In Your Insecure; Effing Reffing Life; * is ALSO gonna become a national sport .... As well as making copious cuppas as never-ending KYKWEERS are slo-moed through ! Welcome to SA; Tim .... It will be great to have you here. Enjoy ! 🤙🇿🇦🏉
A bit of a rusty performance by the Boks. Kept Wales in the game with a few soft penalties but you always felt that the Boks had too much in the tank for Wales and it showed in the end. The debutants Fassi and Edwill v d. Merwe had great games. Mongezulu has a great future ahead of him.
Was surprised the TMO didn't interrupt the anthems.....
😂😂
We had to watch so much TMO replaying on the TV screen I thought we’d have adverts.
I think the Boks got what they wanted out of it. Tough to watch at times. Fassi under the highball was impressive. Edwill VDMerwe was amazing (another scrumcap running machine) Hendricks at 10 was underwhelming - Sacha seemed to inject more energy and impetus at 10.
I wouldn’t read much into “how prepared are the Boks for Ireland” You will see a very different team for that. Lastly - goodness gracious me World Rugby and these rules are messing rugby up. That incident was purely a rugby incident, rugby is a contact sport. Love eggchasers! Great channel 🙌🏻
I think Wales played very well, their score on the scoreboard doesn't fully reflect how well they played. They have a young team and will be pretty fierce in a couple of years. The Springboks played great, even with some new faces in the side.
Great play Wales you guys have a great future! Just what Rassie wanted for the Boks.
yess! eggchaser enjoy SA! Love the rugby content! Just tell everyone you encounter in SA that you are filming a rugby documentary... they will love you! (SA v Ireland is going to be amazing!)
Travel safely! Look forward to seeing your show from Mzansi.
When Rassie says “the best team” he is talking about 23 players not the starters
Well done to SA and Wales for giving us some great rugby. As Irish, I wish Wales hadnt shaken SA up, would have prefered them be first half rusty when facing us. Rugby's alive!
I was not ready for that vincent koch cosplay xD Brilliant
The problem with Evan Roos they are hoping for a Duane Vermuelen clone. That is not Evan's game. He does not catch and smash.
More involvement from TMO is exactly what the fans and no doubt the players and coaches don't want.
World rugby aren't just not reading the room they are completely ignoring it.
Some interesting takes from this game: I certainly think that the scrum was still a tremendous weapon for South Africa! Is Pieter Steph an international test captain, I am not convinced just yet. Some silly moments from Kwagga as a starter but most importantly, I don’t think Roos necessarily played himself into that permanent number 8 jersey. There is a clear opening in that number 10 position after Pollard. Mapimpi has moved even further down the pecking order after van der Merwes performance. At the end of the day Wales still lost 41 - 13 which is a fairly massive margin considering the Springboks were experimenting with youth and experience, lacking Bulls players!
Pollard is by far the best flyhalf.
@@louisvanniekerk2612 hence why I said after Pollard.
Really enjoyed watching the ref play yesterday. Was ruined by the South Africans and Welsh trying to play rugby in the background.
Great observation on Evan Roos. He needs to adapt his approach to get more Springbok time. Still gives me show pony vibes.
As has been the case consistently lately, South Africa had 16 players on the field and one of them has a whistle
The quality off the bench for SA was better than Wales, and that showed. The third umpire wanted to make sure everyone knew he was there and he did check that forward pass try, it was forward dont know how he did not see it that way.... But all in all nice to see Welsh young guns up for the fight, but my boys get things done. Go SA!
Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing "slows rugby down" more than the officials.
I think the most positive thing from a welsh point of view is that there's some really simple stuff to be able to put right. They could have scored a few more tries with a bit more detail and clearly the players need to learn to play with each other. The team gets much stronger with The English contingent coming back in. I would say there's some progress here which is all I wanted as a Welsh fan. Congratulations to the boks. Still the best team in the world
sacha was just class
😂 Tim, we are doing an ‘Anthem singers got Talent’ show now?
Hi Tim. What’s your plan for next week in SA?
Boks shouldn't be happy with that.
I'd give you 2 likes if I could. Your assessment was very fair and accurate on both sides imo
Wales will give Aus. a run for their money on the back of this game, it was good prep for both teams. For a first game since the WC I think the Boks did well and learnt a lot about the new caps, all of them did well so the depth of the squad gets deeper and there is talent to draw on when you have players unavailable.🤔👌🏉
Sacha had a good game and every one handing the #10 to him on a silver platter.
Very few ppl are mentioning Masuku & Nohamba. The #10 fly half position is going to be a civil war with players fighting for that jersey which is going to be a wonderful headache for Rassie, there will be no resting on laurels for anyone wanting to be Bok Flyhalf
I quiet enjoyed the game considering the make up of the two squads of players available. What is it though about Wales v Springboks? Wales just seem to love making life as difficult as possible for us, forget the score line, they just seem to up it a level. Tell you what keep this team and work on them.
Been saying it for ages Edwill Van Der Merwe is top shelf
Bok fan here - how did Bongi get away with only a penalty on his head contact & the Kriel pass to Mapimpi for the try seemed forward?
The forward pass baffled me 😂 and then the less obvious one a bit later gets called instantly
Rusty Springboks, but they will be better in 2 weeks.
The tackle on Malherbe was a red everyday 🟥🟥
Was a good game from wales. I thought for sure it was gonna be a cricket score but they surprised me a bit and well done on them for that.
Boks had a period of like 30 minutes where we just made the most brain dead mistakes and gave away the most brain dead penalties but this team has only been together for 2 weeks and it was alot of new combos being tested so I'll chalk most of it up to debutante being nervous for their first cap and the old boys just needing to shake off some international rust.
Referee was good overall imo but I did have 3 major issues with him in the game.
1. He wasn't rewarding scrum dominance for a long period of time and that was a bit irritating.
2. Penalized Ox multiple times for scrumming scew when he wasn't. You can even hear bongi talk to the ref at one point asking him to watch the welsh prop because he was getting dominated so badly that the other side of the scrum couldent keep up giving the illusion that Ox was going skew when in reality it was Ox just walking over his opponent
3. The Fassie yellow was a complete joke imo. Its never on purpose because you can see that fassie wasn't even facing the direction of the welsh player. The welsh wing clipped fassie in the air and that knocked him off balance making his leg shoot out to try and steady himself. At worst its a penalty against the boks for head contact but no card because of the dynamics. At best it was a penalty against wales for interfering with the player in the air. Shouldent have been a card or even a penalty. Was a rugby collision play on
