A ferritin blood test is a simple test to measure the levels of ferritin in a person’s blood.
• Ferritin is a blood cell protein that stores iron
• Iron is very important to the way the body works. The body uses iron in metabolic processes including creating material for new cells in the body, helping cells manage energy, and carrying oxygen in red blood cells from the lungs to the rest of the body
• Iron is also important for healthy muscles, bone marrow, and organ function
• Having too much or too little can cause serious health problems if not treated
• A ferritin blood test helps the doctor to understand how much iron the body is storing. This can help to find out if the body has the right amount of iron to stay healthy.
WHY IT IS DONE
• To diagnose a medical condition. The doctor may order a ferritin test if other blood tests point to possible anemia, which can result in a lack of oxygen in the blood. Doctors can also use it to diagnose restless leg syndrome, liver disease, and Still’s disease in adults. When used to make a diagnosis, a ferritin test may be done in conjunction with an iron test and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), which measures the level of transferrin, a protein that carries ferritin around the body. These tests provide more information about the levels of iron in the body.
• To monitor a medical condition. If you have been diagnosed with hemochromatosis, a disorder that results in too much iron, a ferritin test may be used to monitor your condition and guide treatment.

@St George apparently, yes.I have hypothyroidism too and at first I thought that was the case, but my endo and family doctor confirmed that my symptoms were due to low ferritin

@@desiree1802 I took some iron medication prescribed by my doctor.10 days a month, for 3 months.It's normal now, but I still take the suplement when I'm on my period(due to heavy period)

Hi what does high ferritin and b12 mean? with normal iron
Oh my God every time t everytime I wash my hair and I can actually make a bird's nest with all the hair that falls off my hair 😭 I have tons of itchy skin dry skin really nauseous and dizzy then when I get my PMS I cannot get out of bed I'm always late headache and really busy and my stomach hurts so😊 distance to test that I have to get done or what is it so I can have my primary care doctor do his blood work immediately

I have high ferritin from taking iron tablets, when I stop taking iron tablets my red blood cell count is low and b12 is not low, would like to raise red blood cell without raising ferritin, everything I read says red blood cell low because iron is low

Same I have 4 ferritin level with low iron levels but I don't know I have celiac I do have lactose intolerance also with gl issiues like bloating gas, constipation hairloss and above all acne

@@elmertuico7509 I think i took too much supplements and this weight loss shake that was high in iron. I cut out everything and ate normal. Got a retest and no call back from the doctor. Back to normall levels.

Good luck! I hope the pills work for you. My ferritin was 7, I've been on Vitron C for 2 years and my ferrtin shot up to 45 but has since dropped to 23. While that is technically in the healthy range, I still have all the symptoms of low iron and my doctor wants my ferrtin up to 70. BUT since we can't figure out why its low in the first place I'm kind of screwed.
