Every time he moved his arm, the guy changed pictures, he'd admire it for a bit or get immediately bored by it and gesture again, rinse, repeat. All around super wholesome interaction and such an intelligent and beautiful gorilla.

Once I took a selfie with an orangutan and a photo of himself and showed it to him. He was so impressed that he was just standing there in awe with his mouth open, swinging and asking for more photos. I took a few, showed them to him, and he was pretty impressed. Also I tried to teach him some gestures - seems like it got his spot, and he learned pretty fast, to say... We made a beautiful friendship, though I never saw him again when I came back to the zoo. Shame if something happened to him.
For real - zoos suck. Obviously humans will always be invested in seeing other species up close in a safe environment, and you can't blame anyone for that impulsive curiosity, but keeping insanely intelligent animals locked up for our amusement is kinda cruel. Especially those (i.e. gorillas) that share 98% of our DNA.

Lately it doesn't even seem as if zoos can keep the poachers out. I prefer animal sanctuaries, but they have a hard time dealing with poachers as well. :(
A lot of zoo's are sanctuaries and they give them pretty nice homes. At least they do in the San Diego Zoo, lot's of space and territory is given thanks to so many donations and purchases to visit it.

Zoos are there to protect endangered animals from being poached or from dying out. Not all zoos are like the shitty ones. A lot of them try really hard to replicate their natural habitats and I would prefer that rather than this gorilla's head on someone's wall.

Back in the mid to late 60's and early 70's I used to take care of an adult male (Stanley) and female (Betty) Bornean orangutangs in a zoo just outside of Boston, Mass. (USA). I used to do almost the exact same thing each morning before with Betty, before the public was allowed, showing her picture books of various things and people, and Betty would thoughtfully study each one before gently rapping the glass with the back of her knuckles to let me know she was ready for the next page. I should also add that if I had no book that day, I would pull out different pictures of my family and friends from my wallet and show her each of those, one by one. But for some reason, whenever I would pull out a photo of my little brother Peter (about 10 at the time) she would immediately start rapping furiously for all she was worth. To this day, I never figured out what she had against Peter! LOL

Zoos are there to protect endangered animals from being poached or from dying out. Not all zoos are like the shitty ones. A lot of them try really hard to replicate their natural habitats and I would prefer that rather than this gorilla's head on someone's wall.

i honestly don’t know if it’s the “they’re actually so gentle creatures” in me, but off of how he’s reacting i WANT to believe that if the kid would’ve walked into the enclosure & sat down the gorilla would’ve sat right next to him like a friend & continued looking at the phone. that’s just what i would want to believe tho.
Most gorillas are peaceful, but they have their own culture, for example, they hate smiles, and other thing's like that. I think that without the glass he would be cool, but after a long time he would be pissed off by kids and other guys. Off course, if you try to approach a wild one he will smash your head.

Back in the mid to late 60's and early 70's I used to take care of an adult male (Stanley) and female (Betty) Bornean orangutangs in a zoo just outside of Boston, Mass. (USA). I used to do almost the exact same thing each morning before with Betty, before the public was allowed, showing her picture books of various things and people, and Betty would thoughtfully study each one before gently rapping the glass with the back of her knuckles to let me know she was ready for the next page. I should also add that if I had no book that day, I would pull out different pictures of my family and friends from my wallet and show her each of those, one by one. But for some reason, whenever I would pull out a photo of my little brother Peter (about 10 at the time) she would immediately start rapping furiously for all she was worth. To this day, I never figured out what she had against Peter! LOL

True if he feels threatened, but also any able bodied or at least able brained human can also kill suddenly .. also disabled human brain and body systems can suddenly kill another human, obviously . Humans are biggest living killers of each other outside of mosquitos infecting us with pathogens . It’s easy to look that up .
