"You know the Chicken, you play bass, you must know the chicken" "we can do the chicken" says the Bass Player who took over from Jaco in the Weather Report. What a wonderful humble man Victor Bailey!
+robz excactly, this dude on guitar is kind of rude to be honest :-), kind of asking for a proof from Victor Bailey if he can play the chicken...tsss, what a dude...
I think it was more like us guitar players all now how to play smoke on the water or stairway or sunshine of you love. He was just saying like hey dude you are a bassist you must now this bass classic. But I can see where you are coming from.
just words. none ill intended. Guitar was nervous playing with heavyweight fusioneer didn't want to embarrass himself by calling a tune they might think was "session cliche shit...aw that again?...nah let's play something hipper". Bailey's like" yeah you a newbie and yes it is about the millionth time i've had to play this, and yes i'm tired of Jaco's tired ass old theme song, but, i'm going to be nice and hold my tongue and say ' we can do the chicken'. and we'll have a good time. i guess. yawn.." like that.
What a great bunch of players and I didn't realize this was Jeff Golub at first either! What a great tune and Matt King plays a killer solo, these guys are fantastic!!
“There’s only two kinds of music,” he once said. “The kind that’s from the heart and the kind that’s not.” I love his music and just found out he's gone I'n so sorry for his family.
Great playing by all ... I gained a new appreciation for Anton watching this ... the man has hands, and knows how to use them ... and pours energy into this groove by the bucketful!
Best version of the Chicken I've ever heard! Piano bangin' out bebop notes, funky and tasteful, very tasteful. Golub solo was right in context with the others. Beautiful climax to both the guitar and piano solos. No one ventured out of ensemble form - no hot doggin' it here, just excellent exquisite balance. That was some spicy hot chicken.
So appreciate you posting this. Especially love solo and groove of Jeff Golub and great bass playing. Drummer and piano round out a dream session. So glad it was recorded. Looks like they're havin' fun. I think Pee Wee and Jaco would think this is boss and thank the musicians for it.
HEY THAT'S JEFF GOLUB YOU'RE TALKIN ABOUT!!! AND FURTHERMORE,, HE WASN'T TALKING DOWN TO VICTOR AT ALL,,,, HE SPOKE JUST THE SAME AS YOU OR I WOULD IF WE WEREN'T SURE ABOUT A SONGS INTENDED DIRECTION!!!!
It's just musician's banter - no disrespect intended, I'm sure ... there's a lot of joking goes on on stage and in the studio - when you're jamming together, you're considered "equals'" for the duration of that activity.
@@johnmcgrath8886 No one will ever be "equal" to Victor Bailey, because you can't compare to something in another dimension. RIP Victor and Jeff though :'(
'The Chicken', played by Jaco's Weather Report replacement and unapologetic disciple Victor Bailey. That is hilarious. Respect and RIP to both Jaco and Victor.
Check out his playing on 'Joined at the Hip' by B.James & K.Whalum, in particular the tune 'Tell Me Something Nice'. Jeff certainly did tell something nice there, one of my personal top 10 guitar solos of my 45 years listener career....
This show is fantastic, an antidote to anti-music shows like the X Factor, an entertainment/soap drama masquerading as a music show. This show needs more exposure, is it on TV?
I want a cd with all of the sessions, i have being watching 3#, 15#, 33#, 37#. This is just a great collection, of great musicians playin awesome music. I want it hook me up please ;)
@lukePaulNorman Man, I know your comments was added 2 years ago, but I was gonna make the same point after listening to this and getting into Golub's stuff in general. You're right man, 'killer stuff' indeed.
***** As I explained, he said II chord, meaning C7, which stays for three bars before the turnaround lick into the Bb7/Eb7 vamp on the outro of the chorus...that is exactly as written on the original chart of The Chicken.
guess it's my prob but I've never felt it when it comes to repeatedly playing the same note in the middle of a solo to mark the rhythm (or somethin to that effect?) Otherwise I loved the groove, and I especially love the song choice.
Actually Victor Bailey's brilliant accompaniment lines can pass as an interactive solo if one listens closely. There's a lot more going on than just the chord tones.
Guitar player seems arrogant. Rather insulting to the bass player and it's apparently below him the know " The Chicken"....I'm not trying to be judgmental, I don't know the guy...any of his fans or friends willing to step up and set me strait? I really want to have a wrong assessment.....
Jeffrey Alexander I don't know - I'm re-watching the beginning and it seems like he was excited when someone suggested 'The Chicken'. I guess he is kind of familiar with it, like he's heard it before, but hasn't played it before. He then jokes to Victor that he should know it because 1) He was on Weather Report and 2) this song is popular to play with bassists because it's a simple Jaco groove. In my opinion, it's just some harmless light-hearted banter.
Jeffrey Alexander I share your assessment of him. However, we don't know the relationship between these players. They could be comfortable enough around each other to say whatever. As a Bass player though the chicken groove even if you don't know how to play it should be stuck in your ears if you've done you Bass influence homework. The guy may or not be arrogant, either way he's effectively soloing over a twelve bar blues with an unusual turn around so it makes his job a bit easier than perhaps jamming giant steps. Now who's really in their comfort zone?

I like Mr Victor Bailey, but most great jazz musicians are that humble, at least here in Europe.
Berkley! !!!!

R.I.P. Jeff Golub.. Thanks for the great music.. Have a great jam above!
What a great bunch of players and I didn't realize this was Jeff Golub at first either! What a great tune and Matt King plays a killer solo, these guys are fantastic!!
Yeah, keys guy KILLED it and everyone's talking about everyone else. #respect_the_keys ;)
“There’s only two kinds of music,” he once said. “The kind that’s from the heart and the kind that’s not.” I love his music and just found out he's gone I'n so sorry for his family.
Jeff was fucking awesome. One of his best quotes ^
so sad to find out another guitar player is gone to soon. his style is awesome. I play guitar and have added some of his music to my set list.
Always there by Jeff is a good one to do real slow at an intimate venue. RIP
Great playing by all ... I gained a new appreciation for Anton watching this ... the man has hands, and knows how to use them ... and pours energy into this groove by the bucketful!
Magnifique!Tous excellents et le chorus;.. idées et mise en place de Jeff Golub est un Grand Moment de Musique et de Guitare.Merci.

Such a shock to see Jeff Golub and Victor Bailey are no longer with us. Great performance. Life is too short for some. Damn
The smooth jazz community misses Jeff a lot. saw him many times. what a cool guy
wow!!! both Jeff & Victor are gone from us---for the time we had them we were blessed
Enjoyed watching a listening. Cool Groove. Thanks for posting all this energy.
I love this-thanks for sharing it!

'The Chicken', played by Jaco's Weather Report replacement and unapologetic disciple Victor Bailey. That is hilarious. Respect and RIP to both Jaco and Victor.

It`s really cool to see some of the greatest musicians around today, just kickin it . And Jeff Golub man, he`s my hero... SOLID !!!
RIP Jeff and Victor Bailey. They died within a year of each other, sadly!
Golub is such a cool, mellow guy, and an exceptional guitarist! LOL , I don't wanna screw it up!
Great tune. Jeff's first solo chorus reminds me of Cornell Dupree's sound on his Bop n Blues album. Nice stuff.
RIP Victor
Very Nice Version Great !...
Very nice indeed !...
Bass is killin!!
I just formed my umpteenth jazz combo, and this version of The Chicken was a priority.
( I’m the bassist playing a Victor Bailey Jazz bass).
Jeff Golub was like Larry Carlton in that he could say more with 3 notes with tone and feel then many others with a 100 notes. R.I.P. Jeff and Victor
Check out his playing on 'Joined at the Hip' by B.James & K.Whalum, in particular the tune 'Tell Me Something Nice'. Jeff certainly did tell something nice there, one of my personal top 10 guitar solos of my 45 years listener career....
Yes...great groove...
Jeff Golub angel great man!!!
@jonescrusher1 Jeff Golub on guitar, Anton Fig on drums, Victor Bailey on bass and Matt King on keyboards.
Great guitar tone
@20AceofBass11 ... back to you: fyi, it was Victor Bailey who replaced Jaco in the band...not Steve Bailey. LOL
me gusto esta version
Man poor Jaco Pastorius!! if he can hear this..He would be very happy. He was a little bit crazy, but who not ! in music get crazy.!!!
Jeff Golub is the man rip
Golub hitting a nice Upchurch/Dupree style.
Victor Bailey ♥
If you look up funkbass in the dictionary there is picture of Victor Bailey next to it.
@20aceofbass11 his name is Victor Bailey
❤️❤️ Jeff ❤️❤️
Buenísimo.
I've always felt the same way about his performance on this one. Glad I'm not alone out there,
Wow, great jam! Was I the only one reminded of Skunk Baxter by Golub?
I'm loving this (:
Damn Jeff Golub, you genius! Hey guys, can we play this song? (sure) Okay, great! How does it go? (um...like this) Okay, I'm ready to kill it!
Yeah. Yeah.
Rip Jeff ❤
btw Gerald,youre really great!
This show is fantastic, an antidote to anti-music shows like the X Factor, an entertainment/soap drama masquerading as a music show. This show needs more exposure, is it on TV?
Anton killin' it :)
I want a cd with all of the sessions, i have being watching 3#, 15#, 33#, 37#. This is just a great collection, of great musicians playin awesome music. I want it hook me up please ;)
Bravo! ✌🏻️
@20AceofBass11 Plus the fact that the Chicken was a piece Jaco used on his own Word of Mouth project, not in Weather Report.
Snoopy dogg on bass! Im diggin it
ah Anton Fig on drums, nice at 4:06
@lukePaulNorman Man, I know your comments was added 2 years ago, but I was gonna make the same point after listening to this and getting into Golub's stuff in general. You're right man, 'killer stuff' indeed.
Could you post a full detail of all the musicians that feature in this videos? Thanks
my left hand developed tendonitis just by watching the drummer
very very very good ...
👍
Mister Bailey, is there and i have the same Bass Model than him a Fender Jazz Bass Signature Victor Bailey !...
Nice sound in bass. What brand is it?
So Amazing! Pearls are made of chicken. :)
sweet
when the keyboardist says "steal the two" what does that mean? its a Cmaj in Bb
A major II chord is not diatonic.
I think he says "stay on the two". Maybe?
He meant to vamp on the II chord which is II7 considering the I is Bb7. So he meant Eb7 as IV7, D7 as III7, G7 as VI7, and C7 as II7 nondiatonically.
***** As I explained, he said II chord, meaning C7, which stays for three bars before the turnaround lick into the Bb7/Eb7 vamp on the outro of the chorus...that is exactly as written on the original chart of The Chicken.
I think thats what he's saying - keep playing on the dom7th chord of the 2nd degree for 3 bars...
Happy chicken!
Jaco ...i love you
I just wanted to know if Chicken can go with jam....
guitar~ ✨✨✨✨✨
RIP Jeff sad indeed
you should start a studio jams kids
how did you get the sheet music ???
Anyone got the exact Guitar chords he’s playing?
Bb7 Eb9 D9 G9/min9 C9
@AceEntertainmentInc nice one
3:33 HAHA
LOL .... THE COOLEST SIMPLEST COOLEST HIPPEST (IS DAT A WORD EVEN?!?) COOLEST FUNKIEST COOLEST DAMNED SONG ON PLANET "BLUE-MARBLE" !!! YEPPITIZZ~!~
guess it's my prob but I've never felt it when it comes to repeatedly playing the same note in the middle of a solo to mark the rhythm (or somethin to that effect?)

oooooooooooohhh.............
Why no basssolo?!
Agreed....jam was excellent, but I was really looking forward to a bass solo!
Actually Victor Bailey's brilliant accompaniment lines can pass as an interactive solo if one listens closely. There's a lot more going on than just the chord tones.
OMG This is great, but I can t enjoy it knowing what happened to Jeff Golub later.
Which one is Jeff and what happened to him?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Golub
How does the guitar player know what chords to play? My organist usually tells me to stay away from chords.
this is what i mean for "band"
The Chicken!!!! MAtchless amps!!!
OK.....
they are using the zimmer frame here.....
chicken with no brass is sad ...
+albert franquet gonzález No bro, just a differente version :)
Some people like their chicken not as crispy, you dig?
No bass solo?
The guitarist died in 2015
@20AceofBass11 Come on, man. I thought you knew his real name is Victor, not Steve.
Why are comping with your left hand ??
why wouldn't he?
more gain on the guitar please
lol its a funk song...
and i dont like it
It's a typical strat tone - quite thin and wiry...
yeah that's FONKY
love pee wee
It’s unbelievable to me that both these great artists are gone. Horrible
Guitar player seems arrogant. Rather insulting to the bass player and it's apparently below him the know " The Chicken"....I'm not trying to be judgmental, I don't know the guy...any of his fans or friends willing to step up and set me strait? I really want to have a wrong assessment.....

mas502arc I think you might be right. I guess I was being over sensitive.
Jeffrey Alexander He's actually dead now.
Fidus V I heard...
Jeff Golub seems to be "a little bit" lost...
I don't like the drummer -_-
Gee. I REALLY like the drummer ! Great dynamics, good fun when he gets up on the bell at the end of Matt's solo.
Anton Figg
괴..괴괴물이다
wtf dude
Golub (pigeon on Croatian) could have done a bit better job on that guitar.....
cognate with "colombia"
