I was a Firefighter with a small department from 1988-1996. Got done because I ended up becoming a single dad. Came back in 2005 as a Firefighter/EMT for the same department. Then in 2009 I crushed my humerus at a training burn which ruined my path to get into Medic school. I still watch firefighting videos like yours because what I learned as a Firefighter/EMT gave me insight to my current job as a Direct Service Professional working with developmentally disabled adults. I learned on the job to do critical thinking under stressful situations, I learned to be able to communicate with people who were not in what we would consider to be in a normal state of mind. I learned to be a professional. Thank you for all you do to teach the new generation core values of this profession.
I just got hired on full time after years of hard work of training in the gym and serving as a volunteer. Thank you for all your videos. My first duty shift is Tuesday

Seeing this comment gives me hope. I’m 42 and all I want is to be career but NJ the cutoff is 35 so I have to try elsewhere but this absolutely gives me hope.
I began my fire career in 1986. To this day, men do not hesitate to remind me that "women don't fight fire." I proved my worth over and over. There were a few other firefighters who were awesome mentors. I finally got fed up with the good ole boy treatment and hung up my gear. My heart still skips a beat when my pager goes off. I don't understand. Firefighting is a team effort. Who cares if there is a woman driving the truck??? It's sad.
Getting to be an old man now - 37. Started out volunteering. 15 years with a career department, now a captain. I like seeing all these comments from young guys wanting to get into this work. I’m thankful for your channel Mike. I binge watched all your stuff while preparing myself for the entire process of getting into a paid fire academy with a guaranteed job with the department at the end. Had to go against almost 200 people, and they selected me and 14 others. Your videos are literally changing lives. I’ve been on the floor for 5 months and I couldn’t have asked for a better career. Thank you for your videos!

Speaking of dealing with the "public", where I live every Department is 100% volunteer. We responded mutual aid to a Structure Fire one time, were the second truck onscene and by the time we got there it was already engulfed on A/D/C sides and was a loss. We focused on preventing extension of the fire to the nearby 500 gallon propane and heating oil tanks. Some community member came up and started berating us (remember, we're mutual aid, this isn't our district) complaining about paying his fire tax and how long it took to get on-scene, and how little people there were, etc. My Captain politely explained to him that: 1. We're all volunteer coming from our jobs, homes and families so it takes a bit to get loaded up 2. This is not our district anyway, we're a different department 3. The roads between our district and yours are 1 lane dirt roads that we can't safely go over 20mph on. 4. We are all extremely short staffed, our substation has active 3 members. The primary department, their substation has 2 active members and we are desperate for any kind of manpower in any kind of shape. Needless to say the community member never bothered to apply. Complaining apparently was more fun.
Howzit going Mike. I just made 2 years at my fire department. I just wanted to say thank you soo much for all of your videos. You have definitely helped me throughout my career so far and I just wanted to give you a BIG THANK YOU 🙏🏽.
Great video Mike. I have referred others interested in becoming a firefighter to your Firefighter NOW channel and currently a female is pursuing applying after becoming an EMT working on an ambulance. I am trusting that she will be successful and that your suggestions will be part of her success.
Seems like you took BC Ali's remarks a little out of context here, Mike! I don't think she's trying to accuse anyone of anything! I think she's just saying to stay humble and recognize and challenge your own preconceived notions, which is kind of what you said in number 1!
You took one small quote, out of context, to slam a leader in fire fighting just for some content. Bravo. Did you even read the entire speech? Are you aware of the tireless and incredible work Dena is doing to try to preserve the lives and mental health of public safety officers? I’ve never heard of you before, but I won’t stoop to your level and bash you. I’ll just say. Look into what she’s published and then send her an apology.
Couldn't have said it better myself... I'm retired 15 years from injuries and too much bullshit... I got issues when I'm told to pull hose lines without getting a tool when our protocol calls for everyone to pull tools and hose lines simultaneously... My file had about 60 write ups for this bullshit..
Interesting takes. The social dynamics were always the hardest for me in my career and there was no shortage of backdoor politics, hypocrisy, and inconsistency of praise and/or punishment. The firefighting was the easy part. I always used to joke that I would have the best job in the world if it wasn't for the other firefighters. It was a joke of course, as I had a great career with some exceptional people, but man there were days when I questioned whether this was the right job for me when a bunch of drama was unfolding for no good reason.
You left all the rest of Dena’s point off. The context is there. We all are prejudiced and biased. That’s not inclusive to race or religion. We are biased to our ideas and beliefs. One way to handle conflict is to try to see the other person’s side which is what she was saying.
Been an EMT for 7 months. Working BlS and gonna start fire classes at my local JC this fall. Vast majority of my partners have been great. But there's been a few who want control over everything and are just straight up disgruntled. They think they got something to prove. As a 28 year old, it annoys me to no end when I see Gen Z being a know it all. But in the end the main thing is getting your patient to.their place of intent safely and they were alive the entire time in your care. You do that then your unpleasant partner will trigger and bother you less and less. Working EMS is indeed a stepping stone until the moment comes when you have a patient. Always remember that. When you have a parient, put aside your dreams and aspirations for 5-10 years down the road, look at your patient and ask yourself "While I have my dreams and ambitions for 5-10 years down the road what are the chances my patient right in front of me will be here 5-10 years from now"?
Prejudiced, biased, and privileged: I’m bothered by your rebuttal because I read the article and I really don’t think that’s what she meant. I think she meant to keep an open mind, don’t think too highly of yourself, and work well with others.
Hey. I’m a firefighter from EU. Maybe you can show us how looks a firetruck in US. There is a big difference between fire trucks in EU and US. Can you show also what is in the back of fire truck, equipment, pump, how to use pump and explain difference between trucks in US and how you called fire trucks? Thanks for all details in previous videos it’s really interesting
Hi, one question: in my state which is Maryland specifically in Baltimore sometimes, and this is fairly rare, but all the fire fighters will like park on the on bridges over the highway and kinda do a little salute or sit down all next to each other and I’m just wondering if that’s to honor some sort of a death or national tragedy. what are your thoughts are on that? Google doesn’t seem to know.
1. What about being around people who don't possess your strong and responsible work ethic and sense of respect for the other people around them? You wouldn't be complaining because they remind you of yourself, you would be complaining because they don't work and act as responsibly as you do, period. The only way you can deal with that is to leave because people like that do not change. 2. True! A true leader or teacher doesn't repeat what someone else told them, they take that information and start thinking about it to see if it is even correct in the first place. Then, they modify that information and turn it into a teaching method and work philosophy to create fellow thinkers out of the students. You encourage them to think about what you tell them and debate it using their own thoughts and ideas until you end up with the best possible result. One nonthinker teaching 1,000 students, results in 1,001 nonthinkers. 3. It didn't go anywhere because you were trying to turn mediocrity and chaos into a thinking person's environment. That doesn't work in a society that is dominated by followers. It's too much work.
This is not related to what Mike was talking about… but had a question about the academy. Silly question rather… but when you enter the academy, do they require you to shave your head? I know the police academy does. I’ve seen people not have a buzz cut, some may have semi-longish hair, etc (for males). So I was wondering what the rule is for that? Do you have to cut your hair? Or no
Hey man curious, my city is hiring on calls and training starts in October, realistically, I would love a full time, but I’ll take what I can get for the sake of learning. So for the on call firefighters, who would be an idea candidate. We obviously have bills in my house hold so Id have to keep my waiting tables gig. What do most on calls, could you guess, do in this situation? Does their spouse work, do they have another job as well? Just trying to see how realistic this can be.
I’m excited to be a firefighter, one question I have is there a polygraph involved? I’ve researched a ton on this and get all different answers and I think it varies from state to state. I will be applying Ín California and I don’t believe they do. Anyone know?
“Prejudice, bias and privilege”. Another example of the toxic infiltration of the woke agenda. I’m glad that you always have explain things in the proper context. Keep it up!
I have a question man will going to college and getting like an associates or bachelor's in fire science get you any further than your peers who didnt?
Mike do you have an email I can reach out to you to ask you a question about my story and experience with the fire service and help to get me back in. Thanks Kyle
@@mike_pertz So I live out in Arizona, the intern academy is part of the selection process. This normally either after first round of interviews or the second depending of the department. When you pass you are offered a job.
Okay, but why should I listen to your "harsh truths". I'm not trying to be mean, but the first two "harsh truths" sounds more like personal opinions than hard facts. On the first "truth": We can all think of persons we don't like for reasons that have nothing to do with "reflections of our worse selves". I know you used language like "usually" and "likely", possibly to account these people, but it doesn't offer much credibility to these supposed "truths". It's what I expect to find on a fortune cookie or in a tiktok video. On "Most leaders lead from the back": Are the leaders who lead from the front the "cultural influencers" who are "driv[ing] the narrative"? Because the way you describe them implies these people are more like political pundits or social media stars. If they are not then who are they? Also some of the language you use, like "drive a narrative" and "mindlessly follow", is language used (more often than not) by politicians, pundits, and partisans to demean the "other side". In fact the example you use (a bat. chief saying "Know that you are prejudiced, biased, and privileged") is a hotbed topic for the Right and the Left in the culture war. It makes you sound like a political pundit rather than a firefighter giving out "harsh truths". Truths implies facts and not political opinions. I also find it odd that you give her statement, in your words, "without context". In case you missed her explanation for that particular point, it reads as follows: "Take a step back from your first thoughts and opinions. Give folks an opportunity to prove you wrong. The only person you can change is you, so be hard on yourself, grow, learn, and model the behaviors you wish to see in others. Practice kindness, respect, and keep an open mind." Which just sounds like your everyday "Do unto others as you would like them to do to you" or in your words "have a profound sense of gratitude and humility". Gratitude for what? Their "privilege" to be there? For the opportunity they were given? For their privilege to be a firefighter? Why humility? Perhaps to help prevent them from believing they're better or more knowledgeable than everyone else (aka fighting their prejudices and biases). You're both saying the same thing. You say "gratitude" she says practice "kindness" and "respect". You say "humility" she says "Take a step back from your first thoughts and opinions. Give folks an opportunity to prove you wrong. . . . be hard on yourself, grow, learn. . .". Same thing just in different words. Which is another reason why this miscommunication boils down to politics and not leadership. In simple terms she's saying "probational firefighter", and you're hearing "probi" being used as a pejorative. She's saying "Know that you are prejudiced, biased, and privileged" and you're hearing "racist". They sound similar, but mean different things in different contexts. I have no problem with "harsh truth" 3. Institutions and fraternities are notorious for being deathly allergic to change.
Thank you for this!! I myself felt that 1 and 2 were the same thing, I just defined what he said in #1 with language. Def a contradiction in this video. ;-)
With regards to what the person told a graduating recruit class about privilege...it kind of felt like you are intentionally ignoring the rest of what she said. Anyone who has been in the fire service knows that their fellow FFs can be extremely judgmental, and that gossiping about other people - often times in a negative way - is one of the most popular past times. Dudes write other people off without giving them a chance to grow or disprove those negative assumptions. Yes, everyone has biases - it's disingenuous to act like we don't. There's already too much negativity in the fire service as is and some people seem to get off on trying to wreck other people's reputations. Telling the graduating class to keep an open mind about people and to not allow immediate judgement to finalize their evaluation of people hardly seems like the wrong message to send.
You should attach the article, this way people could interpret it for themselves. Nothing you said was “truth” only harsh takes. If you wanted to truly help people get where they want to be, directly naming people and calling them out for views on your channel isn’t the way to do it
Nah-You’re wrong. The 100s (maybe thousands) of people that have been hired or improved their lives in a meaningful way from content on this channel would say you’re wrong too.
@@mike_pertzall you heard was some buzz words that you don’t like. She was using them in the context to NOT be like that. Don’t be to full of yourself, yes you are a trained person to handle extreme situations and incidents and most people aren’t so I can see how that would give some a “big head”. BC Ali was just saying don’t think your better then the people you are helping. Train hard, train smart and be humble, because you are the person that could be in the same shoes one day.
Bless This an excellent video & message. Especially #2 because books & rank doesn't give people common sense to inspire others in the right way. Thanks 😊
Do you ever have days where you feel like you struggle to feel like you matter in the world? I'm 24 and work in Fire/EMS and some days, I feel defeated and that nothing I do makes a difference. I have a fear of developing an arrogant/ I know everything attitude and as a result, I constantly denigrate myself. I'm not looking for a thank you or pat on the back. And I won't lie, some days I don't have my heart in the job. I was just curious on you guys' thoughts.
Of course. It was burnout and depression for me. Doesn’t make it acceptable, but it does make it normal. I’ve been where you are (and likely worse) and I’ve had numerous peers and superiors say similar things to me. I brushed it off as “they’re just a little stressed” but in hindsight I was wrong. Very wrong. My take: Ask for help and talk to someone before it eats you up. In my experience with those comments made by my friends, they really needed help and I didn’t recognize how bad it was. I might be off base here and feel free to roast me for this response… just letting you know my experience with those feelings. You might look into peer support? EAP?
You are incorrect about number 2 each and every person In this country is privileged. Second, each and every person that walks this planet possess bias in some way shape or for to deny that is foolish all she was saying is to be aware of your biases and don’t let the cloud your judgment. I’m with you on the prejudices point tho not everyone is prejudice 🤷🏾♂️
Thank you! You got what I was saying! It wasn’t meant to accuse or be negative. It was meant to say, be aware, be open, and give everybody a chance. Our life experiences are all so unique, they lead us to our own biases.

Complaining apparently was more fun.
Great content. I always wanted to be a firefighter as a kid, but the Lord knew I couldn’t take the pressure. Be safe y’all!
placed #2 on the list for fire cadet for my city. should start next month. your videos were a massive help , thank you mike much love
Thank you for the kind words. Best of luck!
Somebody trying to get laid
Loved the channel and this video brought my level of respect for the man of up to the mad level. Keep up the good work.
I wish you’d upload more often! Valuable content 👌
23 years Retired. I was ready to retire but now I miss it terribly bad.
Seems like you took BC Ali's remarks a little out of context here, Mike! I don't think she's trying to accuse anyone of anything! I think she's just saying to stay humble and recognize and challenge your own preconceived notions, which is kind of what you said in number 1!
Thank you!
Thank you, Lauren 🫶🏼
I love your videos and the way you think!!! Thank you for all your content! It really helps a lot to push people like me in the right direction ❤
I am 16 and wanting to join the fire service, thank you for the amazing info you have provided.
Really hit home with truth #2 Mr. Pertz
Thank you for the video as always Sir 🙌
Thanks for watching!
I like the one cheif who essentially said they all sucked by default😂
I feel like mike is the ultimate example of leading from the FRONT
Greeting from fellow Egyptian firefighter❤️❤️
These are truths you can find not just in the fire department but in life in general
Prejudiced, biased, and privileged: I’m bothered by your rebuttal because I read the article and I really don’t think that’s what she meant. I think she meant to keep an open mind, don’t think too highly of yourself, and work well with others.
You nailed it! Thank you 🫶🏼🙏🏼
That’s what happens when you just read the headline. What you said is exactly what I got from that article as well.
My firefigher explorers post said they would conduct and interview and agility test. What do both consist of?
I feel curious. May i ask, in the training to become a firefighter, is it needed other people to volunteer for rescue practices, training?
I just submitted my application for the local airport fire exam any tips for the fitness agility exam or written exam
Such a great video, I enjoyed and agreed with everything you said.
Fantastic job, Mike.
Hi! Can you do a video on wildland firefighting and how to prepare for it? Thanks a lot and I LOVE your videos!!! God bless! 🚒
Do you have any advice for youth looking into firefighting as a job?
This is not related to what Mike was talking about… but had a question about the academy. Silly question rather… but when you enter the academy, do they require you to shave your head? I know the police academy does.
I’ve seen people not have a buzz cut, some may have semi-longish hair, etc (for males). So I was wondering what the rule is for that? Do you have to cut your hair? Or no
Some places might-but generally I think no. I know I didn’t when I was in the fire academy.
Any advice of helpful someone with dealing with upcoming retirement as a Chief of over 35 plus years … thank you!!
Pushes me to push my civil service bypass appeal
Keep…. Going…. Just got hired:) thanks man
Hello. Can I have your opinion on going to college for firefighting???
Hey man curious, my city is hiring on calls and training starts in October, realistically, I would love a full time, but I’ll take what I can get for the sake of learning.
So for the on call firefighters, who would be an idea candidate. We obviously have bills in my house hold so Id have to keep my waiting tables gig.
What do most on calls, could you guess, do in this situation? Does their spouse work, do they have another job as well? Just trying to see how realistic this can be.
I hate slobs and lazy bones and ragers. I don’t agree with #1
I’m excited to be a firefighter, one question I have is there a polygraph involved? I’ve researched a ton on this and get all different answers and I think it varies from state to state. I will be applying Ín California and I don’t believe they do. Anyone know?
Many departments require it. You are correct though it varies from department to department.
Superb content and a top-tier channel. Did you ever finish law school?
Thanks man - 2 months left.
@@mike_pertz You're welcome. Excellent, finish strong, and Congratulations in advance.
Amen brother!
“Prejudice, bias and privilege”. Another example of the toxic infiltration of the woke agenda. I’m glad that you always have explain things in the proper context. Keep it up!
I have a question man will going to college and getting like an associates or bachelor's in fire science get you any further than your peers who didnt?
It might if you decide to get promoted - a lot of places will require degrees for officers. But if you’re just starting out I wouldn’t worry about it
Mike do you have an email I can reach out to you to ask you a question about my story and experience with the fire service and help to get me back in.
Thanks Kyle
Hey Mike, I haven’t seen anyone talk about passing the intern- fire academy.
I see these more and more. Have any ideas how to pass?
The intern fire academy? Is that where a school sets you up with an internship during the semester?
@@mike_pertz
So I live out in Arizona, the intern academy is part of the selection process.
In case you missed her explanation for that particular point, it reads as follows:
"Take a step back from your first thoughts and opinions. Give folks an opportunity to prove you wrong. The only person you can change is you, so be hard on yourself, grow, learn, and model the behaviors you wish to see in others. Practice kindness, respect, and keep an open mind."
Which just sounds like your everyday "Do unto others as you would like them to do to you" or in your words "have a profound sense of gratitude and humility".
You got it! Thank you!!!
Awesome video.
You like Rhinos? Thank you for all the videos you make, they have helped me tremendously.
Well said ❤🚒
Holy
Shit
Everything he said was too factual
Good word!

EAP?
@@garyng5662 I have tried EAP before. I might try it again.
You are very wrong on # 1
Agreed.
Yea 100% wrong.
Eh, I can kinda see him being both right and wrong. It really depends on the person and the situation
@clipmaster4616. I am 100% prejudice against onions. They’re disgusting!
We have freedom. Not privilege buddy
@@TheTommyBrookman freedom is a privilege, is it not ? Many people around the world don’t have the same freedoms we have as Americans.

Hello sir. I was wondering, is 25/26 too old to become a firefighter?
Not at all
Man I’m 37 and have been a volly for 13 years and now I’m in the hiring process for a paid dept. As long as you don’t go over the age cut off, I’d say at least try.
Learned so much from bro.
