@@giovanniiamunno7874 I took this somewhat literally and figured because it never hit broadway there were reasons that this show had a lot of backstory and that beyond that a lot of junk happened but it turns out you are just saying the premise is a curse which I would have also had somewhat of an issue with but you are just saying the story is cursed which okay yes of course living one day over and over again can be seen as a curse but you specifically pointed to the musical and overall story and that's fucked up.
The 'Hope' segment utilizes actual stage magic to show Phil killing himself and immediately appearing back in the bed waking up all while singing the song live. It's truly amazing. Best part of the show.
So much fantastic stage magic in this show. I wish people gave it more of a chance, it was one of my favorite Broadway experiences of all time.
Like that whole number is basically a human sized version of the cup and ball trick, just crazy repetitive slight of hand.

This sequence is so clever. I have watched it several times to see how it is done. In the shower scene, note that another hand runs along the shower rod at the top. The switch has already been made, but they are smart enough to help continue the sleight-of-hand. While it's hard to tell in this video, there is a large round of applause when he pops up in bed after the shower.
"The timeloop has been used in everything, from Doctor Who, to Doctor Strange" How proud were you during the writing phase of this video when you came up with that line?

It's also a plot device used in things that don't have "doctor" in the title.
Groundhog Day is CRIMINALLY underrated. I saw both it and Great Comet (a show whose soundtrack I’d memorized extensively) in the span of two days, and genuinely I had a better time at Groundhog Day. It was moving, hilarious, and had some of the most creative design elements I’d ever seen in the theater. It’s really unfortunate that it was considered the “dud” of that years Tonys.
i will say, Dear Evan Hansen swept that year. Eveyrhing was a dud comparatively.

The film's scriptwriter and the show's book writer, Danny Rubin has actually frequently disagreed with Ramis on the theory that Phil is only trapped for 10 years. Rubin says Phil is trapped for one entire lifetime because that's how long it takes to become a true, better person who will live every day to the fullest.
When did he say that?
@@WhaleManMan In 2005, Rubin said, "Ultimately it became this weird political issue because if you asked the studio, 'How long was the repetition?', they'd say, 'Two weeks'. But the point of the movie to me was that you had to feel you were enduring something that was going on for a long time ... For me it had to be-I don't know. A hundred years. A lifetime."
Other people have added up realistically how long it would take to master the skills he has by the end, and I've seen estimates that go up to 40 to 50 years worth of Groundhog Days.
Only tangentially related - and I know this is an old comment - but apparently during rehearsals for the Old Vic revival they used "10,000 days" (almost 30 years) which is also significantly longer than a decade. Personally, I think any number of years can be a valid interpretation, I like the ambiguity.
I think 10, 30, even 50 years I can buy, but I feel explicitly saying "a lifetime" feels incredibly depressing. Groundhog Day has a message of hope, that even someone like Phil can improve both as a person and his experience of life. And sure, it employs a fantastical method for this to happen but I feel this kind of story always comes with an implicit promise of "so, you see, it can be done! Obviously not this way for you, but maybe somehow. Therapy?". Saying "He was trapped for a lifetime because that's how long it takes to become a true, better person who will live every day to the fullest" is explicitly saying that no real person can achieve this goal.
I'm sure that's not what he meant but it seems an inescapable consequence of what he says.
Then again maybe we can understand that as the role of fiction and talking to each other as social beings - we *do* have access to multiple lifetimes in a way, there is our literal actual life but in terms of information and learning we also have access to other people's lives, and nigh-infinite imaginary ones.
Okay I've changed my mind. What Rubin is saying is that it takes PHIL a lifetime to learn all this stuff because HE'S NOT LEARNING FROM OTHER PEOPLE. And it's in fact the critical sea-change in him when he starts doing exactly that!

Groundhog Day is one of my favorite musicals from the last 10 years, it’s so so great to see this show get some love! The stage tricks in this show were top notch, the chase sequence in “Nobody Cares” is one of the most delightful experiences I’ve had in a Broadway theater
I was in shock for that whole segment. Absolutely brilliant stuff. It was perhaps the most fun I’ve had at a Broadway show, and I’ve seen some famous shows.
Andy Karl is a friend and extremely talented colleague of mine, in any other year he would have taken home the Tony for his work here ( he did in fact win London’s Olivier award for it ). This show should have run for years, it was extremely inventive, charming, intelligent…put together by a creative team working at the top of their game. I.J.S.
I agree. I absolutely loved this show. Saw it on Broadway in 2017. Andy Karl was fantastic. The staging, set were incredible. A very clever and enjoyable show.
Was this another snub from the Dear Evan Hansen year? I swear, every time I learn about another quality show that got snubbed in favor of that corporate "feel-good" teenage slog I get more and more bewildered.
Andy Karl is my new favorite actor because of this show. You're very fortunate to know him personally. I would give an arm and a leg to meet him or get to see him perform live :)
@@emalaw1329 Yeah it was!! There was so many more deserving shows and actors during those tonys, Falsettos and Groundhog Day for example deserved so much better.
Interesting commentary. Allow me to add a few thoughts:
1: It's ironic Phil is a weatherman - whose job is predicting the next day's weather. You watch a weatherman to see what the next day will be like.
2: Ned and Nancy are both flat characters in the movie. In the musical, we learn more about them - in the same way Phil learns more about people.
3: The musical makes Phil's predicament sadder - when he says he will never have another birthday, etc.
4: How ironic for the cast! They have to do the same show day after day. : )
5: Andy Karl is amazing. I can't think of another show where the main character is on stage almost all the time. Exhausting!
Someone bought me a ticket to this show. I had never seen a musical in person before and didn't know much about broadway at all. I went in blind, not knowing what to expect, and walked out of that theater knowing I had just experienced something amazing. This show has stuck me since then and I really regret not going to see it a second time. Andy Karl and the rest of the cast were amazing, the show was hilarious, the lighting and music were mesmerizing - really wish this ran longer.
Can we appreciate how good this is? I'm still mind blown that there's no boring or poorly made video in this channel, all of them are absolutely fantastic! Congrats, and thank you for providing us with such high quality content!

I never thought that "Groundhog Day" would receive the Broadway musical treatment, but the story surprisingly works well on stage. Please do a review of the "American Psycho" musical, if you haven't already covered it! 🎶🎤

I love this show so much (and everything Tim Minchin makes) and it was so underappreciated. I think I was bad luck for it. I won tickets to the first preview, where the turntable broke 20 minutes in, so they performed the show concert style (it was great and the audience was living for it anyway). When I went back to see the show properly, it was the day Andy Karl tore his ACL...
So your good luck in being able to see it is the bad luck of those on stage?
I’ve got to admit, I got chills listening to “Hope” even with the pitch-black comedy edge it had watching the choreography - it’s just… clever but in a really, really bleak and dark way hearing the whole “never give up hope, keep going” sentiment expressed in relation to a character who’s depressed and burnt out in a way that means “welp, if I just keep trying to destroy myself, I’ve got to actually die at some point”, with things being so bad for them and putting them in such a nihilistic place that there’s the “after [trying to die several times], you might want to live… but never give up” line. It really intensely lends to the last act of the play not only feeling like a rebirth in the sense that Phil gets over his former petty and superficial and unpleasable ways and learns how to derive positivity from everything, but feeling overall the way it does when the fog of a depressive episode or even just a really bad rut lifts away and leaves the person *so damn thrilled and relieved* to be excited for things and people again.
The first number of Act One is “Day One”. The last number of Act One is “One Day”. The titles are reversing, just like time is reversing!
The fact that they weirdly said bi rights and just never bring it up again kind of means everything to me.
The main couple is just casually implied to be bi4bi
Thank you by the way for doing this show. Seeing it four times (and the closing performance) was such an experience to live over again (the puns are intended) and the fact that Bill Murray went to two performances of it back to back just makes it gold in itself. Double Take was so well done by everyone involved! Can't wait to see what will be the shows for Season Three (I have like three in mind :P ) !
watching this show during the pandemic really hit me hard. the scene where phil and rita talk on the bench made me tear up, not just because it was an emotional story point, but because phil’s line about not having anything to look forward to because each day is the same blur was a little too relatable to my current situation. i’m really glad i saw it when i did. it’s such a good show and i think the message is something we all need right now
I love how Tim Minchin has become this Broadway darling. He has such a distinct voice in his music and his comedy and I am always drawn to his score. Even if I am not the biggest fan of them I am always drawn to them.
It’s a pity he’s not a more well-known Broadway darling, or we might have gotten to see Larrikins 🥺
This video introduced me to this musical. Got about halfway in, decided to stop and go watch a bootleg, then came back to finish the vid. It has since become my all time favourite musical.
A few days ago I had the pleasure of seeing it live in Melbourne, an opportunity I never thought would ever happen. And Groundhog Day became the first show that made me cry.

Saw this show multiple times including the first preview and final performance. Such an underrated show that got over shadowed by Come From Away and Dear Evan Hansen.
Come From Away is equally brilliant, IMO (it and GHD are my two favorite shows), but DEH is just embarrassing

I really hope (ha) this show gets a revival at some point! A musical about being stuck in the same place might resonate with people after they lived through a pandemic and lockdown!
I was fortunate enough to see this show once in London, twice on Broadway, and 2.5 times when it was done in San Francisco, and it was a delight every time! I really want to see it again someday.

I wish I didnt decide to skip out on seeing this show when the tour came to Buffalo, I remember so many of my friends saying it was amazing but I didnt think I would enjoy it because it was an adaptation musical.
This was a surprisingly good show. Much MUCH better than the cast recording originally made me believe. Obviously, with the nature of the plot, when just LISTENING to the repetition of the music, it makes the show seem a little too one note. It's a score you really need to see in ACTION to get a full understanding and appreciation of the work.
Also.... *Patiently sits and waits for the day we get a Dance of the Vampires deep dive* It will come. One day... it will come and the world with know what Michael Crawford did to a work of art. It will come.

Nice analysis of Phil's arc and Rita's role in the story! I do wish you went into more detail on some of the other supporting characters though, like Ned and Nancy, and also maybe talked about the production of the show and the trouble it had on Broadway and why it wasn't quite able to find the success it could've. Honestly I could just talk about this show for hours, it consumes me every time. There's so many layers to it.
Yeah I wanted this to be a What Went Wrong - a little more investigative and a little less explainy.
Poor Nancy not even getting mentioned just about sums her character up though, doesn’t it? 😅
There are so many cool things about this show that would have made for excellent content - maybe they’ll revisit it someday for a proper deep dive 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Great video as always! I bought a ticket to see this an hour before the show started on a trip to New York and I'm so glad I did. I was also very happy I could take my friends/family to see it when a local theatre group did it in their season.
Local to where? I flew to San Francisco to see their regional production, which I think was the first. I’m pestering my local equity house to mount a production 😆

I had the privilege of seeing Groundhog Day’ obc. While some parts did drag and the second act lacks interesting songs, overall it’s a show that I’m so glad I got to see.
That's funny, I always thought act two was the much stronger part of the show. Or at least that's where the deeper themes start coming into play. And I mean, Hope, If I Had My Time Again, Night Will Come, Seeing You, these songs all blew me away when I first heard them!
@@4dultw1thj0b It’s mostly a preference thing. I’m not a fan of more pop like songs such as If I Had My Time Again. IMO, Songs like Day 1-3, Philanthropy, and Nobody Cares really thrive, while Act 2’s songs, although strong thematically, fall flat musically.
@@shiquote Gonna have to do a strong disagree there. I think the whole score is a cohesive work of art - and if I HAD to quibble I’d say Nobody Cares is too long (though on stage it doesn’t seem that way because of the spectacle you’re seeing). Seeing You gives me goosebumps every time. 🥰

@@allisonbergh4429 agreed!! The score has brilliant variety and reflects the emotions and tone of the show so well. All you have to do is look at the sheet music to “if I had my time again” to know it’s a complex work of art (with a crazy amount of key changes for 5 minutes😆) and let’s be honest…it’s the “defying gravity” of Groundhog Day🙌🏻 the messages in act II’s songs are much deeper and more meaningful and that’s what makes the show so great.
@@amandatracey3287 I really enjoy the clever stuff Tim does with titles too: “Day One”/“One Day” and “Philandering”/“Philanthropy”. He does a similar antonymic thing with the songs in Matilda (and “School Song” is the cleverest bit of lyrical trickery EVER)

I saw a preview of this show! It was critically underrated IMO.
I've never seen the play version, but the movie is in my top five movies of all time. Sounds like the musical nails exactly what the move is about and I'd love to see it someday.

With all of the hype over the West End revival I finally looked at this show and was interested in your take on it given it's Luke warm Broadway reception. You've produced a nice piece on the themes of the show which are mostly inherent in watching it. I was hoping to hear more about the production itself and maybe some contrasts with Minchin's Matilda.

Saw the show at the Old Vic in London and really really loved it. I remember wanting to see it a second time but it was sold out the whole time sadly. (Still have a tiny bit of hope that it’ll return to london some day in the future)

It may have not captured enough interest in NYC, which I found to be such a shame (still not sure how it’s clever music / lyrics didn’t win that Tony), but thankfully it’s now back where it began, here in London, once again led by Andy Karl and one week into previews it’s doing great, so another successful run here is likely, which I’m so happy about. Some staging has changed, but it’s still a superb show.

@@Caroline-rv8wy Yeah, I’ve yet to actually do stage door (mainly due to only starting seriously going to the theatre earlier this year after wanting to for years) because I’ve always felt like, if I did, I’d miss my train home.

I was hoping this would be more about the production of the musical, and not a book report. It's not even a critique. However, I really do appreciate you bringing attention to a fantastic musical.
Deeply disappointed that this didn't include clips from Stargate's repeating day episode.
Underrated show imo.
I've heard people don't like some of the lyricism in it with some poor rhymes or whatever, but by being ESL I think that doesn't really matter to me.
I wonder what rhymes they’re objecting to. Coz there’s only one (maybe two) that makes me wince a little: rhyming “court” and “caught”. But Tim Minchin is an Aussie, and the show was created in the UK, and that would have been fine either place.
You have probably been asked this before, but I'm gonna request it anyway, just in case: Please do something about the Lord of the Rings musical. Because the fact that that one completely seems to have went by most people fascinates me.

Here is my issue though. Why in time loops do people even feel the need to go through the motions of the day?
You know Stephen Sondheim was offered the chance to do this musical first, and he turned it down on the grounds that the original movie can't be improved on, no matter how good the production, songs or performances might turn out. And I agree with Sondheim - and sorry to say, but your analysis of the musical, good as it is, is just repeating everything that's already good about the movie. It has a lot going for it, but nothing significant that wasn't there already.
Some of these musicals you find are truly baffling to hear about.
If I might make a suggestion for a future video though, would you please do Be More Chill?
I was a fan of the show before it hit Broadway and was lucky to see it twice before closing, and while I am aware that it was probably too modern for Broadway and had a slew of other problems I'd like to see your take on why it failed so badly with such a big following.

They tried to make a play based of a bill Murary comedy. From what the mid 1980s early mid 1990s were he’s a guy caught in a time lop. Could of been worse they could of tried to make a musical our play off caddy shack our sone thing like that.

@@ej3016 I agree the movie wasn’t necessary worth singing about. But the musical (which was written by the original screenwriter) is MUCH better imo. Give the cast album a listen, or seek out a bootleg recording. Tim Minchin (who wrote the songs) said his goal was to make people forget about the movie within the first few minutes

I think they were going for the personality trait of narcissism, as opposed to NPD. The original myth of Narcissus is also an inaccurate characterization of someone with NPD - but literally defined the word “narcissist”

@@4dultw1thj0b I feel a little bit sorry for the psychologists and psychiatrists. People go to them saying something is wrong. They don’t want to hear “Nah, you’re totally within the range of normal(ly effed up).” They want a name for what’s wrong, and an effortless means of righting it. Which puts the doctors in a bit of a tough spot. They only way they can even TRY to help people is to give them what they’re demanding and hopefully trick them into actually working to improve their lives or whatever. So the DSM-V is the size of the Encyclopedia Brittanica, and they’ve started stealing words that already had meanings. Like narcissist, which was a word long before it was a diagnosis 🤷🏼♀️
