@jaygibbs84 That's an effect called "windmilling", when just the wind turns the engine. A light to medium (I don't know exactly how fast) wind is enough to make this. Even when the engine is on the wing this may happen.
Sweet Video! I must say, I download your video, as mp3, just to get the music, lol.... But really, cool video, I wonder, do you work as a mechanic? Cause no one has accent to get there, unless u work there, cause my father in law is a mechanic too. I ask him if they let me to see you guys, and he said: "They dont allow anybody to be here, period".
That was a great vid! Christy, AA has RR Trents on their 777s. You can tell that they aren't GEs because they don't look HUGE. RRs have the smallest diameter, PW is a little bigger and the GEs are massive.
@zeesham13 the original 772, 772ER and 773 were powered by either GE90's, RRT800's or PW4000's.. all the other 777 variants were powered by the GE90 (77F, 77W, 77L)
@gerry626 Tell me about it! I once worked at an MRO and there was a DA B733 parked outside the hangar. Whenever the breeze blew it would go CLACK-CLACK-CLACK clackety-clack. It was so annoying I finally got a spare electrical cable and tied it around one of the fan blades to stop the fan from spinning. Standard procedure calls for a big inlet plug, though.
@brandons72vette Oh they do? My dad is just going to training to fly them next month for AA haha but i have heard on some websites that say the pilot just sleeps in a reserved 1st class seat?
I take it that not much is changed over to the new engine. It's takes us much longer to change RR AE 3007's but we're changing fire loops, epmd's, and all the bleed ducts over.
@mrcable1996 no it is Rolls-Royce because the engine size is smaller than General Electric and the spool-up sound is different and if you look at the front cone the spiral is bigger than that of GE Boeing 77 engines
The cowls are left unlatched for idle engine runs, this allows the engine to be inspected for air and fluid leaks while running. They are later latched closed for high (takeoff) power runs.
wow look at the replacement engine windmilling just from airflow. I heard that without the engine being on that its not good for them to windmill because the bearings dont have an oil jet being sprayed on them. and that allowing the bearings to spin over while being cavitated will eventualy damage the races and balls. just what i heard
@houshidar558 They swap them because of maintenance purposes so this engine will be in for maintenance and when that is finished it will be put back into service and replace another engine that needs maintenance done!
wow! this a really cool. i love planes so much and its cool to see what they do when they change engines and also they had some extra light from the lightning!
My dad flys these, this is the b777-200 which uses the Rolls Royce engines, but American just bought 2 b777-300 3Rs, which uses the GE engines and is 50 feet longer. In case you didn't know, the crew has their own bunk beds which is pretty sweet.
Any airline pilot who is international or few domestic flights have 2 first class seats reserved automatically, but with the 777...they not only get the first class seats, but they get a bunk bed with a private tv..it's the best "seat" on the entire plane besides the left seat in the flight deck. The first class seats turn into beds and have personal DVD players/ tvs for each chair just like international 757s/767s have. The tripple 7 is huge and it really is the best plane in the fleet!
Thanks for sharing! Are ground engineers/technicians allowed to taxi an A/C and test an engine as seen in this video or only pilots are allowed to do this?
@mantodowhattodo I recently flew the most tired, dirty AA 757 with video screens that looked like big TVs. Interior was like an old, musty hotel. Must have been one of theirs from 1989 still in service. It was horrible.
Pretty good vid but some of the stats are wrong. Most aircraft burn a quarter of their fuel on take off and all the way up to cruise altitude. Also the price of the engines is more or less 25 million. To change only one fan blade would cost $250,000.
hmm anyone know why the changed it? was it simply too old? broken? anything? or this a regular procedure to replace 15 million dollar engines every hundred or so flight hours?
sorry to hear that man... my father works in Bay 6 on 767s, I work at TAESL but due to my extremely low senority (I'm 25) I'll also be getting the axe. I feel for you elder AMTs though as you all have families, mortgages etc. to support. Any chance you can bump to DWH?
@TheAirproxx When this was told to me by the pilot, he said in a more factual mannor in Chicago red carpet lounge. My old man has been with united for nearly 20 years and travels almost every other month, so you can image the miles he has. But The captain was actually introduced to me by my father. I was hoping on getting the tour of the cockpit but the co pilot was in a pissy mood and things were tight.
@igneousrocklad I was not saying they weren't successful, I just have to say, personally, any AA plane I've ridden on has been a rickety old P.O.S. Whereas on other airlines I get more legroom and a plane I feel safe riding in.
Anyone else feel like the side cowling didn't match up to the fan blade cowling as tight as it should? The gap at the bottom doesn't look good. Also, why was no lighting used up under there to get a good visual on things. It looked dark and hard to see,.not confidence inspiring. I'd be worried they missed something under there.
Used to watch this 7 years ago when I was little now 7 years later still enjoy watching this video
Aviation and Cars indeed! A very nostalgic video for me!
Same! My dads an aircraft mechanic, and he showed this to me when I was 6 or 7. Since then I’ve watched it many times.
Me too
No joke.. same thing with me.
Same
Care to tell what music was this? impressive replacement, how often does this need to be done?
Who else came here when they were 5?
@jaygibbs84 That's an effect called "windmilling", when just the wind turns the engine. A light to medium (I don't know exactly how fast) wind is enough to make this. Even when the engine is on the wing this may happen.
Thats a pretty cool vid. Are you an aircraft mechanic? Im an AME in training.
Sweet Video!
I must say, I download your video, as mp3, just to get the music, lol....

3:44 Tow truck comes in 'dammit im late'
About 6 hours for an engine change? I thought it would take less time.
Really nice to watch this. I really miss being an A&P mechanic.
Thanks for uploading so much precious information about the B777.Its my favourite aircraft.
That was a great vid! Christy, AA has RR Trents on their 777s. You can tell that they aren't GEs because they don't look HUGE. RRs have the smallest diameter, PW is a little bigger and the GEs are massive.
Sir your engine has been replaced on your 777 will that be cash or credit card
Awesome video, thank you for posting this! ...And check out that thunderstorm at the beginning of the video!
Omg I watch this when I was 6-7 I miss this video so much
@PrinceBV i dont think these are the ge-90's, i think american airlines uses rr's,could be wrong tho
@zeesham13 the original 772, 772ER and 773 were powered by either GE90's, RRT800's or PW4000's.. all the other 777 variants were powered by the GE90 (77F, 77W, 77L)
Do we know why the engine was changed out? Was it scheduled or was there a problem?
great video, well done. I'm about to start gound school on the 300ER,can't wait it's a beast
Love the video, great position and great choice of music :) One of the best, 5 stars!
Whats name the music?
@gerry626 Tell me about it! I once worked at an MRO and there was a DA B733 parked outside the hangar. Whenever the breeze blew it would go CLACK-CLACK-CLACK clackety-clack. It was so annoying I finally got a spare electrical cable and tied it around one of the fan blades to stop the fan from spinning.

Why do they need to replace the engine? Is this routine?
This was just an awesome vid! Good job, mate!
@brandons72vette Oh they do? My dad is just going to training to fly them next month for AA haha but i have heard on some websites that say the pilot just sleeps in a reserved 1st class seat?
@mine1username and this has exactly what to do with an engine change video?
Nice video, I'love the engine's sound, thanks for upload it.
A lot of people ask the same thing, what's the song's name? RyanHemsley
Incredible.
I love the b777
Good job, very nice video
why is the new engine rotated while awaiting installation? To keep birds out?
@cskoseki I believe it shows that the engines are perfectly balanced?
AMAZINGLY COOL!!! I have never seen a real Boeing 777 engine swap before. Thx for uploading this video of a Boing 777 engine change
It’s not called boing777.its called a Boeing 777
wow in sofia (bulgaria) last week 777 El Al land emergency with the same broken engine (right). Good video, what is the second song? :?
Why are the engine blades spinning on the spare engine before it is attached? Whats turning them?
Wind
The cowls are left unlatched for idle engine runs, this allows the engine to be inspected for air and fluid leaks while running. They are later latched closed for high (takeoff) power runs.
I'm flying in a 777 from EWR to TLV next week. Can't wait!
Does AA own these engines or is it a "power by the hour" kinda deal?
Thank you! Your video help me a lot because I needed to explain how a jet engine is replaced.
what a nice video ,, it is amazzing the wing structure to support this heavy engine ,,,, how many bolts are used to attach this engine to the pylon ??
wow look at the replacement engine windmilling just from airflow. I heard that without the engine being on that its not good for them to windmill because the bearings dont have an oil jet being sprayed on them. and that allowing the bearings to spin over while being cavitated will eventualy damage the races and balls. just what i heard
The way the wing moves up when the engine is removed...simply cool
@houshidar558
They swap them because of maintenance purposes so this engine will be in for maintenance and when that is finished it will be put back into service and replace another engine that needs maintenance done!
wow! this a really cool. i love planes so much and its cool to see what they do when they change engines and also they had some extra light from the lightning!
wow that is amazing with the lightning in the background at 1:02
a simply brilliant video!!! a must see!!
So how much do each one of those cost?
so what do they do with the one they took off ????
which is bigger in terms of fan diameter? this trent or the ge90?
GE90
AA uses Trent 892 engines, but the 772 does use the GE90 like Co and BA
Why do they make the engine fan spin during the change? Do they use an air-bleed starter?
The engine is just windmilling from the wind. They’ll use APU bleed air to start the engine
My dad flys these, this is the b777-200 which uses the Rolls Royce engines, but American just bought 2 b777-300 3Rs, which uses the GE engines and is 50 feet longer. In case you didn't know, the crew has their own bunk beds which is pretty sweet.
The Trent 800 is lighter, which makes more sense for short haul flights.
Great video. We actually got to make a small pulse jet in a propulsion class. Go Boeing and go Jeppesen!
do they usally chang engins
great video man! loved the music and facts!
"15 million.............Each" BOOYAAHH!
i love it how theres thunder in the background, fit pefectly with the song
Awesome vid! Thanks for posting this.
why do the engines keep spinning randomly ?
beautiful music in the background !!!
this at DFW?
Any airline pilot who is international or few domestic flights have 2 first class seats reserved automatically, but with the 777...they not only get the first class seats, but they get a bunk bed with a private tv..it's the best "seat" on the entire plane besides the left seat in the flight deck. WOW! very neat video!
@Juliansworld no rolls royce trents, this is american airlines. no american airline uses the -115b only the -94b
Do AA operate out of Dallas Ft. Worth and United Airlines operate from JFK?
What are the songs in the video?
Although Airlines can choose what engines they want to put on, does Boeing recommend a certain engine for that type of aircraft?
Thanks for sharing! Are ground engineers/technicians allowed to taxi an A/C and test an engine as seen in this video or only pilots are allowed to do this?
Yes we at AA can be run up and taxi certified
@mantodowhattodo well said. it's why i fly continental, but the merge with united scares me. i was so turned off by the condition of AA's plane.
excellent video and good weather to work!!
@hello1233280 so that obviously means GE is the better choice
Very nice video. It must be a hard work replacing an engine. All those technicians must work in a perfect harmony.
Nice vid. Very professionally done.
A six-hour engine -change is very impressive.
Q.C must have been busting their balls ! LOL
Kudos.
That depends on the engine, because they change the engine model in an A380 very often: From RR Trent 900 to Trent 1000 to New Alliance engines.
Because it only operates the 200ER. When it starts operating the 300ER sometime between now and next year, the GE90-115B will see some action.
@mantodowhattodo I recently flew the most tired, dirty AA 757 with video screens that looked like big TVs. Interior was like an old, musty hotel. Must have been one of theirs from 1989 still in service. It was horrible.

@kinsley2108 yeah I saw the vid where they compared it to a 737.
Your thinking of the Boeing 777-300ER/-200LR's.
It's unbelievable the Antonov 225 has a maximum takeoff weight double of the 777. That's crazy! Gotta love the 225
16 dislikes = 16 children were on mommies computer.
what is the song?? great video!
No body will never know
@yoyoyoyoshua Yes, it's about the same diameter as a 737 fuselage.
15,000 lbs each! I wonder how they don't fall off the wings...must be really STRONG wings
@TheAirproxx When this was told to me by the pilot, he said in a more factual mannor in Chicago red carpet lounge. Thanks for posting.
Why did they replace the engine?
1:55 watch the wing move up as the engine's weight is removed from it. Cool.
That first tune sounded a little like Zeppelin's No Quarter. :)
wait dont airplanes have tv on long flights?
Do u need an A&P license to do that?
What’s the song called?
whar are the names of the songs?
Great video what’s the song called?
Good to see they're not doing an AA191 engine treatment
Steven Francis i8

Great Vid!!!!
The 777-200LR uses the GE-90-115B as well as the 777-300ER. I like both: The T7 and the A380 but I love most the T7. :D
