  • Ganesh, also spelled Ganesha, is a widely revered deity in Hinduism, known as the remover of obstacles and the god of beginnings, wisdom, and intellect. He is easily recognizable by his elephant head, which symbolizes wisdom and the ability to overcome challenges. His body is typically that of a human, and he often has four arms, each holding various items that represent different aspects of life and spirituality.
In one hand, he might hold a broken tusk, symbolizing sacrifice and the idea that wisdom often comes through overcoming difficulties. In another, he could be holding a sweet called a modak, which signifies the rewards of hard work and devotion. His other hands might hold a goad and a rope, representing control and guidance.
Ganesh's large ears signify his ability to listen to his devotees and their problems. His small eyes reflect his deep insight, and his pot-bellied figure represents his capacity to digest the good and bad of life, embracing everything with equanimity.
He is usually depicted riding a mouse or rat, which symbolizes his ability to overcome all obstacles, no matter how small or large, and his humility. Ganesh is a popular figure in art, literature, and daily rituals, and his presence is often invoked at the start of new ventures or during significant life events.
