I love what Marcus said in the beginning. Singapore's film industry is so stale that Jack Neo is singlehandedly carrying the industry on his back. His films are consistently high budget (in Singapore standards) that it allows a lot of people in the industry to make an actual feature film instead of commercial videos or short films. When discussing the film with my lecturer, he said that it's better no make bad movies than no movies at all. For better or worse, Jake Neo's bad movies is keeping local filmmaking alive for now.
I find that the real issue about our local films is that none of them were based on any good novels with great plot. Everyone of them were pretty unsophisticated and shallow which required no acting chops. Why would the audience pay the same amount to watch any movie with a shallow plot with bad acting than to watch a really great movie with incredible believable acting?
as a female in the force, i would expect jack neo to at least do some field research, like perhaps conduct interviews with girls who ACTUALLY went thru BMT before filming this? pretty sure he didnt becos tbh i cant even relate to this, at all? it doesnt even felt realistic at all, like okay if you wanna showcase the differences between girls in army vs the guys, maybe you could include stuffs like we needa wash our hair vs guys being botak? but then we're practically given the same amount of time as the guys to shower etc, or can even include funny scenes like the girls platoon would get 'whistled at' by the guys when doing route march, or us prepping for fieldcamp with a fully duct-taped ziplock bag for used sanitary items? there is SO much more interesting stories to film, but yet he choose to bombard everyone with stereotypes of girls caring about their skincare routines and nails, being weak af etc.
Was about to support this but realised its abit hard. Those who went for bmt went there volunteerily, not forcefully. Which is what the premise of the movie is about. Women being conscripted. So maybe he wanted to see their first exposure to outfield, snakes etc.
Would be cool to invite other local film creators like Royston Tan, Anthony Chen and more for their insights about local film industry on this podcast!
We have amazing local directors as well, such as Royston Tan and Eric Khoo. But Jack Neo is like the Hong Kong Director/Producer 王晶, they both have a history of producing amazing films through limited budget, and B grade films that is so thrashy they will probably taint their careers for the rest of their lives. The reason why Jack Neo's film is relegated to this stage, is because instead of using his sure win formula of 梁智强,李国皇,辉哥, he is using new talents with little to no acting experiences, so the direction of the film, screenplay, writing script, needs to cater to these "new talents", which is the easy way out with CTRL+F settings from previous films. If today he used his ultimate winning formula of the 3 local guys, regardless of whatever script or filming equipment, their acting experience will definitely bring his movies back to the old glory days. But atlas, the other two guys set up/work in another company, and therefore this directing skills has been stuck in the 00s.
why is no one talking about the new mark lee movie. its such a great film. defnitely worth the trip down to the cinema and paying for the tickets. honestly instead of giviing even more exposure to a film that EVERYONE knows is shit to the core, give some love and attention to a local film thats actually good.
The movie that came out earlier/same time which was reunion dinner with local actors like Mark Lee ect I think that was a better more relatable movie than ah girls go army.
For a film lover and crew, it is painful to see Jack neo is the example of local Singapore filmmaker. There are many amazing directors and writers out there with ideas that can break the mold, which some of them did. "I am number 1" and "zombiepura" are some of the great example of newer directors doing something that's not just Jack neo. Having said that, I don't think Jack neo is the main problem, but even the studio plays a huge part of it as well. Some other studios can only see what films that can capture most people's attention in the cheapest way, but they can never think wider and deeper to develop films that can really made an impact. They only think about how to make use of the CNY period where there are no big Hollywood blockbusters, a period where most people don't have anywhere else to go, to release a movie that was cheaply made. I really urge that studios and IMDA to try to look at what other asia countries are doing to promote their film industries instead of being stuck in the 80s. If not, we will really come to a time where there are NO local films in local cinema.
It’s flawed to say that there is still hope in revitalising Singapore’s film industry by attributing the problem to begin with to it being one that is generational in nature. It’s not a generational problem. It’s a national one. Just look at what other countries have produced during “our parents’ generation” and even the generations before. Bresson, Godard, Tarkovsky, Bergman, Welles, Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Ozu, Wong Kar-wai, Ang Lee. These auteurs have made films that are arguably better and far more sophisticated than any that have been made and will ever be made by directors of our generation. So it’s flawed to implicate “our parents’ generation” or the generations before. The real reason is because Singapore as a nation specifically was unable to produce directors as prolific as those listed above, and, unfortunately, from the looks of it, will continue to suffer the same plight for time to come.
come on this movie is bad so don't try to sugar coat it with the crew and talents put ton of effort lol! they were paid for this job and they did it badly.
Channel 8 dramas used to be so good, with real kissing scenes, etc. nowadays the channel 8 dramas are always the “slice of (Singapore) life” style which is boring and superficial.
I remembered taking a course in poly for watching and reviewing singaporean local films and I have to say, the films made in the past (that were not by Jack Neo) were all pretty good. However, seems like the govt is moving away from those kind of films due to gang influences and other aspects that they deem to be a negative portrayal. Thats sad. Films by Royston Tan were damn good.
Would have liked to hear Marcus comment on his 2 experiences filming diam diam era and this film -- both have part 1 and part 2. I think Jack Neo has been doing part 1 and part 2 for a few films now -- is it his way of negotiating budget and funding or a way to make money or...? I've watched the film, I think it's ok lor. No strong positive or negative feelings.
For professional film makers, the question to ask is whether can we make a movie with all the COVID restrictions in 2 months. How much more money we need to add into the production cost? Example ART kits and logistic involves in collating the test results.
Old school Jack Neo films, e.g. Money No Enough > New ones. Just bring that back and update them for modern times? Or is that just a ligtning in a bottle situation?
I would say that jack Neo’s past movies..ah boys to men..lion men...long long time ago...diam diam era..all those are pretty good though, I think Singaporeans just didn’t appreciate those good movies that he has produced in the past...and when ah boys to men first came out, it was also new actors but people gave them chances..so I would say that we should give the girls chances go perform
It may not be a good film, but it’s definitely not sexist! Guys were also portrayed as uneducated, etc, in the first film. It’s the Jack Neo Ah Beng kinda culture.
To those who left hate comments on Jack Neo’a socials, why not try to make your own movie and see whether the box sales is better? If it’s not, then shut up.
My landlord uncle in Singapore, my grandparents in Malaysia all watches channel 8 or 5. its only the younger generation IN SINGAPORE that doesn't like it (more like hatin')
singapore movie are mostly story of a daily life that most viewers can relate, some famous movies where story is a bit fantasy that viewer can only imagine.
Ya. The repeat of army movie is extremely boring. Cast acting is bad, context is bad. And tosh thinks the sales is good because the production is good. Like seriously, I watched too and its seriously bad. I will not watch any army movie again. Same old trick, same old joke, same old story
The number of pp in a movie is unacceptable since the reservist ah boys to men - this one is even worst and I'm not sure how true it is that the girls series were supposed to be a Web series which eventually turn into a movie itself. If you put so much pp it's like I'm paying to watch ads
Well, it relates to me and I’m hating the movie lots. I am a sign on regular women from the navy. This movie is an school stereotype of ladies in the army. It does not reflect women in today’s world clearly
@@user-mt1sg3zg1b dats true! it makes ladies in singapore looks really dumb. Like whatdaheck, I believe real ladies in Singapore and female regulars are strong and not bimbotic at all. There is! There's the leap year (i think) that stars wong lilin!
Jonathan is very objective in his comments. From most of the comments, can feel he cares for seniors and our interests.

7:45 YO the ad placements are smooth! More so than the first 15 minutes of Ah Girls Go Army!
Off topic but Johnathan Chua looks Gwi-Nam from All Of Us Are Dead SG version.

Jack Neo has so many great hits, even recent ones like Diam Diam Era were amazing. I don't understand why he would ruin his legacy with AGGA.
“DONT INSULTING JIANHAO LIKE THAT” HAHAHAHAHA its true tho like its cringey some times but its funny and its nice HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA THIS WAS NOT

32:14 I think rather than millennials being more aware of what constitutes a good film, millennials are now the ones to decide what's a good film.
He looks like the kid who portrayed Albert in gaoxiao xingdong
John Chua flexing that McDonald's coke. Product placement? lollll
Omg love the daily ketchup !

Local standard....good standard: Eric Khoo (king!) or Royston Tan
