Notice how they're holding a yellow balloon almost the entire time in reality and not in expectations?
My theory is that the balloon represents their hopes of the other girl (In the red shirt) being bi or as the song says, gay. but you can see in expectations they don't have the balloon for long because in expectations you wish it was as easy as walking up to the person and they like you back instantly, so they let go of the balloon because they don't need the hopes anymore since the girl likes them back. VS, in reality, they let go of the hopes in heartbreak because they see the girl is not interested in them so when they walk on the street they no longer have the balloon or the hopes for the girl liking them anymore.

The balloon represents Claud’s feelings, and every time the girl seemingly ignores them or doesn’t see them in “reality” It’s because she’s rejecting how Claud feels about her. Actually these two songs have different meanings. This one is about falling in love with someone that does not reflect your feelings. You want them to be gay cause if they were gay, you could have a chance with them. On the other hand, Billie's song is about falling in love with someone who might like you because they like the other sex. You start to question if something is wrong with you cause the other side do not want you. You wish they were gay so it could be a relief in self-hatred pain knowing they do not like you just because they are not attracted to you sexually, not because you aren't good enough.

to address your point of how this is a music video and not cinema. i’d actually like to bring up the fact that MUSIC VIDEOS, the medium, are the reason why all the movies and tv shows you consume and are are cut the way they are. when MTV first came out they created a market for teens and content that was pushing the envelope in representation. they purposly would take storylines and content in soap operas that were meant to be consumed for older people and redid it to appeal to teens and once again, break boundaries and start conversations ! then MTV’s influence on normal channels and the creation of MIAMI VICE (which as any film/tv nerd) knows set the standard for every show today, and was cut/blantly inspired by music videos.
to say all that, this music video is very inspired by 500 days of summer, but we wanted to twist it to a queer narrative, because one cannot deny the lack of stories and narratives for the queer experience. just offering that experience is important. and just like MTV, and many other filmmakers like spielberg, tarrantino, scorsese, van sant and lucas, i was really moved and inspired by a film and director. (do i need to write about the times they have done literal rips off movies and history or even device and shot progressions?) marc webb is one of my favorite directors and one that’s influenced all my work greatly. i’m not shy about giving credit where it’s due. i love his work dearly and i’d be happy to scream that on the roof tops. i wanted to use one of the narrative tools from the 500 days to tell a little story about heart break i personally experienced. that’s all there is. ❤️
EVEN THOUGH this song was coming from a gay perspective, i still appreciate the perspective of the straight guy being completely rejected from the gay female version. Love is complicated, messy, and difficult. Anybody from any sexual preference can deal with rejection, big or small. We're trully a complicated species.

This made me cry because I am in the same situation but in my situation my crush would never invite me to a party.
Back in bible school, I fell head over heels for this guy, but was convinced he was straight. Well, it turned out he was gay and as I slowly started to learn more about him (more just in regards to being gay in the Christian community) he told me he had feelings more as well; but due to our faith culture, we shouldn't do anything about it. He started hanging out constantly tho and those feelings grew deeper in both of us, but we never acted out in them passed just talking about how much we liked each other, but shouldn't like each other. He is now married to woman and had his second child a few months ago. Sometimes, it still hurts that because of the people around (not even our faith entirely, because I was willing to try for us) he felt that he couldn't be with a woman instead.

I like that the expectations alter as the video goes on. In the beginning, they didn’t know about the boy and he didn’t show up on the left side but then their expectations became the boy third wheeling and later catching them kissing, showing they still had hope that it would work out even after they meet the boyfriend.
