Dracula - I once saw a mock screenshot in a magazine showing a crude 3D room with a Dracula figure standing there with his cape up like wings. When I later played Dracula, I was disappointed to learn that you couldn't actually enter any of the buildings. Apparently the image was artwork for a proposed port of the game.
My favorite Intellivision exclusive was Sub Hunt. A game where you command a submarine, have to navigate the map, sink ships, etc.
Funny story about my family's experience with this game: My grandparents had an Atari 2600, in fact my grandfather was the first person in the family to buy one. When I'd go with them to stores, my grandfather would look at the Atari games and would invariably stray into the Intellivision section. He'd see Sub Hunt, ask if that was for Atari, and I'd have to tell him no. A few years later, the video game crash happened, and they got me an Intellivision for Christmas. I already had a C64 at that point, but I still had fun with it. A local store was selling games for $5 each and I got a bunch of them, including Sub Hunt. My Intellivision was hooked up in my grandparents' living room, right next to their Atari. They lived right downstairs, so I was there playing it pretty much daily. One day, my grandfather came in and I told him that we could finally play Sub Hunt. I offered to teach him how to play, but he took one look at the controller, declared it too complicated and walked away.
He actually wouldn't touch anything more complicated than an Atari joystick or paddle controller. He wouldn't play any Atari 5200 games when I got that system used, nor would he so much as press a single key on the C64's keyboard to start a game, although he would play them if he could just use a joystick.

FINALLY!!! Someone reports the true number of consoles sold. As per the current Intellivision company they have verified over 4.5 million and are still searching. They say the amount should be over 5 million but their official stance for now is just under 5 million. Everyone always Says the spring 1982 total of 3 million when they still sold consoles for another 6 a d a half years.

I see misreporting of sales figures for various consoles everywhere. I find the biggest problem is people quoting North American sales as worldwide sales.

Do you have a source on that? I too am tired of seeing the sales count for the console under-reported.

My father purchased for me an Intellivision as a Xmas/birthday present (I don’t remember exactly) I accumulated a nice little collection of games too. My favorite was the rather sophisticated (in concept) for the time Utopia. A fab early sort of Civilization like game…loved that cartridge! 🥰 I don’t remember what happened to my Intellivision, as I don’t have it anymore…lost to time I suppose.
On a side note, I must say the sound and especially the graphics here still look pretty good as well! Certainly far better than Atari’s 2600, from what I remember 🤔

Years ago I picked up one of those Intellivision Flashback consoles on sale at the V.A. retail store. Even came with a bunch of new plastic button mapping controller layovers. Got quite a few years out of that console before one of the controllers broke but it was a great way to try an Intellivision system without spending a lot of money (on sale for $16.00). Thanks for the video my friend, good stuff! 👍 👍

Interesting list. The most played game for me was amazing Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and Utopia. Some amazing games were Atlantic (Missile Command), Demon Attack (Galaxian), Tron Deadly Discs and Microsurgeon. Burger Time at the time was one of the best versions of it. So many good memories! I can thank my dad for not getting me an Atari 2600. I has some great bonding time with dad playing baseball and football. Before Madden, Football was the game to play during football season!

Mystic Castle is definetely JAW-DROPPING for the Intellivision. If there was a chance of a second life for the console during 1986, that'd be a respectable experience. I loved the Schubert's Unfinished Symphony as a soundtrack...!

You know, when ive heard people complain over the quality of modern games, i always think back to what we grew up with. I had various Spectrums and we had a Grandstand 3000 til my sister got a NES and my brother a Master Ststem but me and my best mate were still playing Soectrum games til the early 90s, despite friends and family getting the new consoles of the time, when he moved on to the Amigas.
Im grateful for the kinds of games we have had for the last few decades, with their excellent graphics etc compared to what we grew up with rather than trying to find anything or everything to complain about a game. I know its all relative, and i know that developers dont always make the most of the hardware (in a creative, imaginative sense), but we were happy for playability and half decent graphics and sound.

Thunder Castle/Mystic Castle is a mindblowing game even to this day! The fact that it was programmed for a console like the Intellivision is INSANE!!

Google 1978 Cutlass Supreme dashboard and you’ll see where Mattel got their design inspiration.

Oddly enough, my Grandfather worked for RCA and got one of these (don't if they had a thing with RCA) but I loved it as a kid. I always played the baseball game, with the plastic slide in things for the controller. I sometimes think if I could go back in time and show myself a PS5 with a 8K TV how it would have blown my mind. 🤔

    • @TheLairdsLair

Strange, because RCA had their own console, the horrendous Studio II.

Going back in time and showing your younger self a PS5 would be a huge mistake. Not because it would change the timeline or anything, but because after seeing a PS5, your younger self would never be satisfied with the games you had back then, and it would be torture, waiting for the technology to advance to the point that you could once again play the amazing console you saw many years ago.

I have one in the attic somewhere. No idea where or when I picked it up. Probably in a car boot somewhere. Never turned it on to see if it works. A candidate for a refurb video, I think.

Maybe Mystic Castle was impressive for the intellivision overall, but that game was the opposite of impressive in 1986. Did you not see what was coming out on NES and Master System at the time?

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  4 місяці тому +4

What was coming out on other systems is irrelevant, for an Intellivision game its impressive.

Thunder Castle.... When was this one released? It captures what was so cool about intellevisiom games, the system seemed to be able to merge some of the best aspects of home console and computer games and even video arcarde (sound).

An interesting list of exclusives although I honestly personally don't consider either Buzz Bombers or Beauty & the Beast as good enough to be regarded as excellent. Indeed I was somewhat disappointed with several of the imagic games on the intellivision, which whilst looking impressive, lacked somewhat in long term playability (although to be fair this is a problem with a lot of 2nd generation console games).
My own personal favourite intellivision exclusives are the afore mentioned Shark Shark! and Thunder Castle, as well as Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Tower of Doom (which is simply incredible), Diner, Utopia, Ice Trek and Novablast!
**EDIT** INTV's Super Pro Football is pretty amazing too and rewards the time you take to learn to play it in spades (a much improved and single player update of the original NFL football game)
    Thanks for the video.

@@TheLairdsLair I didn't realise it also got released on the Colecovision - Very nice - I guess I'll have to pick that up asap. I almost included AD&D Treasure of Tarmin on my list too, until I remembered that it also got released for Mattel's Aquarius computer.
