A few comments about the circuit.
1)The resistors R1 and R4 are not really needed.
2)I would add a resistor from the junction of C1 and R2 to pins 8&9 of the chip. The CD4000 series of gates have input protection diodes. If you look at the waveform on the junction of C1 and R2 you will see that it spikes beyond the supply rails. This turns on the protection diodes briefly. The protection diodes have an "unfortunate feature" that a current in one causes leakage in the others.
    3) An AND gate works OK as the mixer but an XOR works better. An XOR will make it about two times as sensitive at the cost of not all being one chip.
    4) A coil made more like a "spiderweb coil" that the crystal radio folks like will work a little better. The capacitance from one turn to the next and other effects reduces the Q of this coil as shown.

What is the inductance of the coil?
With no previous experience on metal detectors I would guess that a smaller diameter coil with the same inductance would be more accurate in pinpointing objects but would only be able to search closer to the surface, right?
This could be usefull for an in wall nailfinder.
EDIT: I guess that the frequency would have to be changed to search for iron nails though.

as a DIY metal detector entusiast i could say that the inductance of the coil is not so critical... my suggestion is to build the project like this the first time, than experiment with other values ;). the smaller coil will be sensitive to small objects but at less depth. this metal detector is perfect to search inside the walls because is o bfo type no-motion detector you will be able to search between rebars in the walls... i think the frequency of the detector will be approx 50-100KHz this make them good to find little objects and gold... probably a little problematica if used on soil due to the ground minerals response. chek my channel too bye.

    Great !!!
Could you make circuit to measure floating voltage.
If I have series of lithium ion battery cells how to measure individual cell voltage using microcontroller which accept input up to 5 volt.

What is the inductance of the coil? Mine is 273 micro henry but I can't get it to work like yours. The sound is way too soft. I am also using a 2N3904 or a BC547 transistor because I don't have a 2N5551.

Thanks a lot for such good videos, well explained and lots of good stuff.
One thing I like the most is that you keep away of Arduino stuff and prefer the good old fashioned way to do things. That's the way to really work and learn electronics. The fun way. The correct way.
Please don't change. You're doing great!
Always thumbs up. Love your channel! Thanks.

LOL! I just found a few CD/TC4011s in a pill box this afternoon while cleaning up. I don't know where I got them from, I don't know why they were in that box, I don't know how long they've been there and because I'm mostly using SMD components and microcontrollers nowadays I wanted to throw them out. I guess now I DO KNOW what I will do on the weekend. :)
