James tackling one of his largest series again and still giving us double kill counts is fan service of the highest order and that extra work does not go unappreciated
Them asking the Snake's owner to bring his snake to set so they could kill it in front of him (while NEVER telling him they were going to KILL HIS PET ON CAMERA) is truly screwed up! The fact that the owner was inconsolable and had to be held back on set and was crying afterwards makes it even worse. That they knew when they asked him to bring his PET snake they were going to kill it. That is one of the most effed up things any Director could have done to anyone.
@@spaghettinoodlechop3163 He was on set and there. The snake was his pet and he was the one that was there to handle it for them. The snake was also an animal actor. They didn't tell him they were intending to kill it either or he'd never have done it. So he essentially put his pet snake there for the scene. Watched it unfold, and then watched them kill his snake... Yeah he was... inconsolable to say the very least, afterwards.
The most annoying thing about the snake being killed was that it was a useless scene. The movie could have easily been rewritten so that the snake didn’t die. And to know that the snake was actually trained and that the owner loved it so much is just infuriating. Why think, “Ah, yes, let’s kill this man’s pet without telling him for a movie.” Instead of just cutting the scene out?
Exactly. If they meant to show that the counsellors could fight back and defend themselves it didn't work because only Alice fought back against Pamela. Everyone else was snuck up on and killed.
If Pamela was upset that no one helped when Jason was drowning, why did she kill Brenda? She ran out into a downpour to check on a kid crying for help, that is exactly the kind of counselor that would have saved Jason.
I think she was so crazy that she saw every counselor (whom most of which weren't even counselors when Jason went) as responsible for his death. I think it was kind of a 'all the youth are sex crazed irresponsible maniacs' type thing.
i don.t really think it was about the counselors or Jason not saying she did,t love him she was his mother she just wanted to kill people most real seiral killers make up movtives
I think it just boils down to the fact that by then, she was looking for an excuse. Camp counselors are morally lax because they didn't save Pam's son. Therefore, this person who is a camp counselor is morally lax, even if she's morally exceptional, because she's a camp counselor, so Pam gets to kill her.
In her head it was "If these teens have to die for Camp Crystal Lake to be shut down so be it."She convinced herself she was stopping what happened to Jason from happening to other kids. By the time of the first film she was so insane she was blaming people who weren't even born when Jason apparently drowned for it.
@Paloma Ruby Yeah, the killing of a real snake should NEVER have been allowed, I refuse to believe they couldn't have come up with a prop snake for the "kill". Thank God things like that won't happen again
As much as I love the Friday the 13th franchise, I fucking HATE how many of these early films were made. From dangerous/toxic set conditions, drug use, sleazy directors filming pointless nudity and now animal cruelty?! I’m a pet owner, so hearing the snake story infuriated me.
I don't care if it was a pet or not (just makes it more insensitive), there was just no reason they couldn't have used a fake snake to kill (or they could have used the real snake up until the kill and switch it out for the fake one). Considering how inventive, creative Savini is with his kills and makeup, you would think he could have done that. Was he pissed at the guy?
@@jbjacobs9514 no matter what way they put it there was no reason for it. I'd be a little more then pissed if somone killed my pet after I said it was ok to look after him
@@TheFTeam That's what I am saying. I don't get the need for it at all; was just saying it is a bad thing to do whether a pet or just a creature or animal that was there or put there. Just like in Cannibal Holocaust.

I legitimately ugly-laughed at this week's "to the numbers" bit. It's so cool to see him really leaning into his film school chops and confident enough to play with camera angles for the sake of the gag. The break from the head-on format actually added to the humor.
Fun Fact: when Savini was preparing Bill's kill, they were using a specific type of fake blood that was toxic. When that stuff got in Harry's eye, he was taken to the hospital, and he wasn't able to see for several months. Not only that, Stavrakis was tne one who blew blood through Kevin's prosthetic when the blood pumping device broke. He later recalls that he ran to the lake to wash his mouth out. Poor guys.
No idea why she trashes the movie and James holds her in high regards considering she's no one special. Consider her ass thankful she said yes to the iconic movie that kept her relevant.
Man, when I first heard the story behind that snake, I legitimately got pissed off. I already was sad that the snake was really killed, but when I first read about the snake being someone's pet that didn't know they were going to really kill it, I actually got legit mad.
@@leemajohn9137 I mean, if it's a venomous snake and there's no way to safely remove it, it's a different story. But killing a real snake for a movie is already wrong, never mind the fact that it was someone's pet who did not know nor give consent to chop it up.
They shouldn't have killed a real snake regardless, being that it was someone's pet makes it even worse. I'm really surprised they didn't get sued or criminal charges brought against them. F13 could have ended before it even got going due to some guys stupidity.
The saddest death in the whole series doesn't even come from Jason. Rest in peace little snake, they are helpful animals and need to be treated with more respect.
Poor snake looked so scared and confused during that scene. It sickens me it was someone's beloved pet that was manipulated into being used for such a pointless scene
@@poliznia I don't think the actors knew that the snake was a pet. The real culprit here is the director for using an animal that he KNEW was someone's pet and still killed it.
As a pet owner, that snake's story is like a horror story to me. It's like my literal worst nightmare come true scenario. Just hearing about it makes my gut hurt, I feel so bad for the owner
According to Screenrant about the snake death + handler: Also, the snake - which was a harmless bull snake - was accompanied by a handler who didn't know about the snake's intended fate. There are some unclear details about the handler's involvement, but by many accounts, he was incredibly upset by the snake's death, had to be held back by crew members after it happened, and some even say he can be heard crying off-camera following the snake's death, as he was inconsolable. :( I agree James. If this is what happened, that's horrible.
Yeah there's no excuse for what they did to that poor snake. It would be horrible enough if it was a wild snake, but it was someone's loved pet. I would try to kill someone if they killed any of my pets.
I love how older James was more disappointed with the first kills (that being the camp counselor couple) and now he's not as disappointed (not to mention Steve's death)
if it weren't for james starting on friday the 13th, i may have never gotten into horror in general, since friday the 13th is what cleared a path for me to get into slasher, such as halloween, texas chainsaw, and nightmare on elm street. so, thanks james, thanks for doing these kill counts, because you can help people like me get into horror.
"...Halloween is making incredible money at the box office, let's rip it off" Y'know, it's kinda refreshing to hear them just say it flat out like that.
@Terence Johunkin There's literally an ongoing lawsuit over the rights of the f13 films..clearly you weren't paying attention to James. That's why there's no current films. You talking about the "transition" like Halloween Resurrection was so mind blowing..cuz that bombed worse than Jason X and at least Jason X was different and James personal favorite. You don't gotta agree, but don't be a dick about it, some people like Halloween more, some people like f13 more.
I’m very neutral towards snakes but I’ve known people who’ve had them as pets and the sheer amount of love they hold for them. Bonds between snakes and owners can be incredibly deep surprisingly. I can only imagine the amount of pain the owner must’ve felt.

Maybe a new pet snake that they paid for, too. If not, then they're still dick-bags. Rest in peace, snake
Dude, just imagine being the poor guy who was asked to give his little snake friend for a shoot, come back to retrieve his pet, and then the director is like “oops sorry friend, we actually killed it 😅” It really sucks :/
@@CaptainDoomsday believe or not, it was actually perfectly fine and legal to do shit like this in films during that time. If it was the 90s to present day they would’ve gotten into massive trouble.
"Well, I told you once before, but it's always good to go back and double check your work. Let's get to the kills." Literally no better way to start off the recount series, that was perfection.
Also a note to add about Ari. He actually went on to start a band called "First Jason" and most of the songs he writes and performs are about the Friday the 13th series. I've seen him in concert and it's a hell of a ride. The same enthusiasm he brought to his role to to meeting fans, he brings onto the stage to perform. Absolutely love the man!
Smiling like an idiot watching this. I distinctly remember binging every episode of the kill count when I found it in like 2019. Now I can’t imagine my Friday mornings or my work time without James telling me all about the kills. Great to see and be here for the growth!
I recently got to meet Harry Manfredini for one of my classes, and as a shameless Friday the 13th fanboy the first thing I asked him was about his experience on Friday the 13th & why he decided to hop on board with the project. He looked me dead in the eye, pulled out a wad of cash and just went “Money”. That was also the reason why he kept returning. I find it really funny how a lot of people when making these movies really didn’t expect it to blow up the way that it did and just saw it as an easy source of income.
"You too good for horror, Kevin?" Is a great quip because Kevin Bacon's career started to slip toward the latter half of the '80s, and his acting career was saved by another horror movie - The one and only Tremors.
Honestly the best part of this movie is Adrienne King. She is an absolute gem of a person. Met in her person and friends on Facebook. She is so freaking nice.
And if it weren't for that real-life stalker she had in-between movies she could of lived like Laurie does. Just without retconning the series every 2 or 3 movies.
Kevin Bacon does a lot of very bizarre mobile phone ads here in the UK. I really don't know why. But I really distinctly remember that one of the first ones he did involved him dressing up as all of his famous film roles sharing a house together and this is one of them. There's just this shot of him walking around with that arrow thing sticking through his neck so I guess he has, at the very least, acknowledged this movie that way.
I feel like they should have had Palmer in more of the film. Not only because it is so random and obvious when she comes in at the end, that she is the killer, but because Betsy Palmer is my favorite part of this movie. More of her would have been awesome. Plus a ''who done it'' feel to the movie would have obviously worked if you had her through out the movie. Try to surprise the audience, she works at the camp, shes a friendly older lady, throw in some misdirection. She is recognized in the film, so just make her blend in, the killer hiding in plain sight. Then at the end BAAAM oh my god, the older lady did it!! I wasn't expecting her at all. Instead we get her coming in at the end, and anyone whos anyone would be like >.> She is obviously the killer.
I didn’t think that re-doing these was going to bring back a whole lot to the originals, But holy fucking cow dude. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This was both super informative and outright hilarious. Great job James I’m super excited for this.
When I was 9 years old in 1980, I managed to get a horror magazine (Fangoria, maybe?) about "Friday the 13th," since I was too young to see the movie. It seemed like some sinister, dark forbidden film that I couldn't wait to eventually see. Fast-forward to 2019, I re-watched it on a streaming service one night, and I was stunned at how slow and laborious some scenes were. Thank you for this "recount" of this franchise - I enjoy your first videos on it, but the recount version is MUCH more informative. Thanks to everyone behind Dead Meat!
I just realised that this is one of the few horror movies with a twist that was actually elevated by later films. Back in the 1980 people probably thought the twist was ok with Pamela but now if someone watches this film for the first time thinking that Jason is the killer then they will be surprised.
What they did to that snake was criminal. It belonged to someone else, that person loved the snake AND they could have very very easily either used a fake snake for the kill scene (they can do that expertly with human gore so why not the snake?) or not had that scene at all. It was needless and horrible and makes me very glad there are laws against that kind of thing now. It makes me think of another animal that was actually killed, but unfortunately I don't remember what movie, I only watched James's kill count of it and he pointed it out, but anyway I remember the animal was an Ox.
@@thenexus8384 It'd still be bad considering how easily they could have done that scene without killing any snake. Why needlessly kill anything? (the only times it's justifiable to kill any animal is self defense, hunting for food, or killing for mercy if the animal is sick/hurt beyond healing. If it's not for one of those reasons than it's just sick and fucked up.
The snake story is a depressing realization. I watched this movie for the first time before watching and when that scene happened my friend and I questioned if it was real. This honestly makes it difficult to enjoy this movie now. I appreciate you bringing this attention and for making another amazing kill count. You work incredible hard and it really shows.
@GoGodman1972 I'm just a big animal lover. I hate seeing animals die in movies in general. Having a real pet snake get cut in half for a scene that didn't need to exist, makes the movie a little depressing. When the movie isn't great to begin with, having this tacked on to it makes it hard for me, personally, to enjoy the film.
seeing james' progress in talking to the camera is so cool going from talking fast and kinda monotone to being super funny and informative, its really awesome
I agree with James. I thought the first Friday was pretty bad too. I found it really slow and pretty boring. I prefer most of the sequels but this one is possibly my least favorite of the franchise.
I haven't watched the first one but I kind of hate it already because they killed someone's snake. It would be bad enough if it was wild but killing someone s pet is just fucked.
@@leagueofdead569 for fuck sake, how low budget was the first movie? They could've used a goddamn sausage painted in the color of the actual snake and let the guy chop it while it was zoomed in so noone really could tell it was a sausage
As someone who has spent a lot of time studying snakes, it pains me to think people could get more evil to them than rattlesnake roundups. (Rattlesnake roundups are where they gather a bunch of rattlesnakes and compete to kill the most snakes. in some US states they're often hunted and shot dead during their hibernation) The fact that they killed a domesticated snake makes it far worse as even at the time snakes were an impossibly easy thing to fake and easier to randomly find wild. Killing it on camera is an insult to me personally, especially considering the alternatives; more so if you account for the previously mentioned things people do to snakes and rattlesnakes especially. That specific snake has one of the lower kill counts yearly (domesticated) of any domestic species, almost adding salt to the wound. No clue who the owner is, but I do hope he get's/got the last laugh. (Personally, I'd go pretty far to get revenge for something like this). Not going to lie, I very rarely cry, but that almost had me in tears. To end this little rant, I'd like to say that humans have treated snakes unfairly since gaining intelligence (look at history/mythology regarding them; especially the Bible) and I think we would do well to realise what we've done over the centuries and are still doing today. I thank all who've read this and would appreciate others trying to wash off the evil stereotype for snakes our ancestors have painted in our minds.
It would be common sense to kill a venemous snake that is in the area of your home. Especially if you have children. If you’re a lone fella. Sure leave them be.
“Very rarely cry”. I don’t believe you. You would have to cry often. If you cry if you see an animal getting killed. A snake with no feelings. Got to you? I’m sorry I’m being a dick. ❤️
@@oldironsides4107 I'm a strange person. besides, people are more unnecessarily cruel to snakes than any other creatures. also, most domesticated snakes have their venom glands removed or fangs snapped so the snake probably wasn't even that dangerous.
13:17 Fun fact, according to Kevin Bacon, stills of this specific scene/shot are one of the most frequently requested items he's autographed. He also said that it weirds him out so many people want him to sign a picture of him getting graphically murdered lmao, which is fair...

Same first movie, same first shirt. Ah, memories. Something else you did again in fhis video, and I don't know if it's just me who noticed when this changed later on, is that when you say "In all our favourite horror movies", in this re-count you put the emphasis on *all* again like you always did, instead of on *horror* like you do in later kill counts. @@ripvanishh4723 I guess it would be better than killing someone's beloved pet that stayed docile before its death because it trusted that humans wouldn't hurt it, but killing a living animal just so the director could get a realistic take is still absolutely not ok.
I actually really like all the slow panning shots in this movie. They really let the camera linger on the lake scenery, and it helps sell the summer camp vibe for the setting. My biggest issue with the movie is so many off-screen deaths, especially Brenda and Bill. Even though they’re not fleshed out characters, I liked both of them and they deserved much better death scenes.
Did James look back at his original video and say to himself, "WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT..."? 😉 It's really cool to see you reboot your first video in your more natural, developed style. You're obviously much more comfortable in front of the camera and add a LOT more to the backstory of the movies these days. Love it.
There was absolutely no need to kill that snake, they could've either found a wild snake or just gave the snake to a pet shop and avoided killing someone's real life pet.

Fun Fact: The basically nonexistent "whodunnit" aspect of the film was going to include a part at the beginning where one of the counselors managed to cut off one of Mrs. Voorhees' fingers. At the climax, we would then notice that she's missing a finger, cluing us in to the killer's identity. But they lacked the time and money to make it work, so it was left out. Shame.
It's kind of amazing that such a low budget trashy film managed to become so popular. Out of the big three (Halloween, Elm Street, and Friday), Friday the 13th is by far the cheapest, and least competent filmed, out of the three and somehow, is the most popular.

If Pamela was upset that no one helped when Jason was drowning, why did she kill Brenda? She ran out into a downpour to check on a kid crying for help, that is exactly the kind of counselor that would have saved Jason.
Psychopathic lunatics have never been known for sound logical reasoning.

We must separate the art from the artists these early films… except 5 that director was so scummy
I would say that the good set stories in these movies are part 6, part 8, part 9, FvJ and the remake

What's the toxic set conditions on the film?
Not to mention in p2 they had a 14 year old girl in a sex scene with a grown man

Knowing that there normally isn't any (legal) consequence is just sickening.
I'm sure if he brings up that they lied about it he will definitely get something for it
I don't care if it was a pet or not (just makes it more insensitive), there was just no reason they couldn't have used a fake snake to kill (or they could have used the real snake up until the kill and switch it out for the fake one). Considering how inventive, creative Savini is with his kills and makeup, you would think he could have done that. Was he pissed at the guy?

Fun Fact: when Savini was preparing Bill's kill, they were using a specific type of fake blood that was toxic. When that stuff got in Harry's eye, he was taken to the hospital, and he wasn't able to see for several months.

Plus a ''who done it'' feel to the movie would have obviously worked if you had her through out the movie. Try to surprise the audience, she works at the camp, shes a friendly older lady, throw in some misdirection. As someone who has spent a lot of time studying snakes, it pains me to think people could get more evil to them than rattlesnake roundups.
(Rattlesnake roundups are where they gather a bunch of rattlesnakes and compete to kill the most snakes. in some US states they're often hunted and shot dead during their hibernation)
The fact that they killed a domesticated snake makes it far worse as even at the time snakes were an impossibly easy thing to fake and easier to randomly find wild.

There was absolutely no need to kill that snake, they could've either found a wild snake or just gave the snake to a pet shop and avoided killing someone's real life pet.

Not gonna lie, I've lost a bit of respect for Savini regarding the snake thing. Sure, his effects are unmatched, but that was a dick move on his part.
Same great special effects artist but God damn can he be an asshole.

Interesting fact. My dad actually met Kevin Bacon a few years after this movie. My grandmother trained horses and Kevin Bacon wanted her to train his and Kyra Sedgwick's horses. Really cool story
I’m so upset about the death of the snake. That snake and their owner deserved much better than that.
369th like
The owner never even consented to having the snake killed 😢
Edit: Not that it would have mattered if they consented or not, the snake deserved much better
At first I thought "it's sweet he wants to give more love to his roots in the channel, but I've been here since his second kill count ever so long time fans probably don't need that" and yet here I am learning that this movie was heavily "inspired" by Halloween for the first time. So cudos James, this is why you're the best. You really knocked it out of the park.
This is your first time realizing? Did you watch the movie
“There are some unclear details about the handler's involvement, but by many accounts, he was incredibly upset by the snake's death, had to be held back by crew members after it happened, and some even say he can be heard crying off-camera following the snake's death, as he was inconsolable.”
That's horrible!
I hope they pay for damages, and got into some severe legal trouble for that! even that wouldn't be enough punishment for killing an innocent animal, and causing the handler so much grief and heart ache!
@@mycomnithegreat434 it’s been almost 50 years

My grandma tells me she and her friend snuck into this movie when they where teens and that ending made them run out of the theater screaming
18:19 Betsy Palmer herself said in an interview that she told Sean Cunningham that Pamela should have had a scene before the reveal. She suggested that Pamela should have been in the diner Steve Christy went to and warned him against reopening the camp.
That would’ve been a good idea

Yea, that part is sad. I love snakes.

I don’t like snakes but I agree that was pretty fucked up to kill a pet snake
One of the props people said “oh The killing of the snake was real. I don’t have knowledge how it all came about, but the handler that brought it said it was a sick snake and would have been killed anyway. After the shoot, I had to pack up the remains and keep it cold until the next day in case the scene needed to be reshot. Thankfully, it wasn’t necessary”. I hate animal cruelty but I hope that at least this is the truth cause that other story is even worse
Unfortunately that isn't what happened. They had the guy on set and watching as they chopped his pet up. A domesticated, fangless snake that was trained to be an animal actor and they cut it into pieces in front of it's owner.
@@LucianUchiha That is a whole new level of fucked up I didn't know existed.
James: "Italian neorealism is so notoriously slow paced and plodding, its most famous film is about a man searching for his dog."

What movie is that? My friend could be interested in it.
The whole line was "neorrealism, so famous for its low urgency, that its most famous film, Umberto D, is 90 minutes of man searching for his dog". Like dude, I still like James, but that was a terrbile take.

Savini is a well known jackass and thief in the industry so at this point it's not surprising.
The old speed talking James was hillarious . I enjoyed those videos a lot
Something I found interesting.
The original is just under 8 minutes while this one the intro alone is nearly 6 minutes.
Just shows how much the KC has evolved.
Dead Meat got me through my senior year of high school, every Friday(despite being in class) I’d put my headphones in and escape to a world of horror as told by you James! To this day Dead Meat continues to help with my depression and anxiety and I recommend it to just about anybody I know that loves horror. Thank you James for making Dead Meat , you are the goodest of people.
"You put out an ad falsely advertising a movie that isn't written and doesn't exist, that's impressive, here take my money" - a plan that worked out
Like maxing out your charisma and barter stats
I applauded at the intro for the kill count. Our wise cracking, informative host and his channel have come a long way, both deserving recognition. James A. Janisse revitalized my love for horror movies and I can’t thank him enough.
honestly i found you through the first friday the 13th kill count and I loved it and still do! the original kill counts have their own charm and I love them, but I do love that you are recounting! thanks for giving this series (and every horror movie) so much dedication, respect, and care!
I love that there’s technically 12 “Friday the 13th” movies cause I feel like that puts pressure on anyone wanting to make a 13th movie cause if you’re gonna make The 13th Friday The 13th, it better be good lol
at this point it just needs to be slightly better than Jason in Space or Jason on a boat.
I mean none of them were incredibly good lol.
Yeah after awhile it's just the same stuff with barely any plot.
I think if they make another movie Jason should wield a chainsaw at some point to justify all those cartoon appearances
Technically the 13th movie was Never Hike Alone but I digress
This level of self reflection and criticism is refreshing. Aware of mistakes but not deprecating at all. Bravo. And i salute you for giving the original slasher franchise it's proper dues. 👌

So horrible.
I definitely think “dependable” is a good description for Friday. It’s not really the best in any one category, but it still tends to be somewhat consistent in all the elements you expect and want. Personally, I actually really like the first one for its simplicity.
It’s kind of like the Fast and Furious or Marvel franchise
It’s not high art but it’s consistently what you come for

I am so glad to finally see someone reflect my thoughts of Pamela as a villain and the story. I think Pamela is a great character, but can't hold a film on her own. Her story works best as a backstory for Jason.
Knowing about that poor snake is so heartbreaking. Ruins any rewatch of the film for me (not that it’s great to begin with, but I can’t even laugh at it now)
