I had this back in the day, the amount of love and charm that SNK packed into this game still blows me away. It managed to do something that not even the big console CvS games did, it actually gave all of the characters their individual themes and even has stages from the games. Not to mention a literal tag team mode. Might sound crazy but it's one of my favorite games in the CvS/SvC series.
This is the game that taught me to love Capcom and SNK fighting games as a kid. Packed full of character details, true tag and team battles, unlockable characters and supers, Dreamcast link compatibility, themed minigames, and best of all, Karin directly belittling and insulting you in a dozen different ways! This was the best portable fighting game you could buy for years, all the way up until the PSP!
I still have my Blue camo NGPC with SNK v CAP Match of the Millennium and the Capcom version of Card fighters Clash. I remember being in 5th grade showing everyone at school this crazy alternative Gameboy Color (before GBA) and they were all blown away. I had some idea these things were obscure and kind of rare but never expected the NGPC would become one of the holy grail retro handhelds
@@RobotMasterSplash what is the link between this and DC again? I have all the original hardware and the cart. Was it something about the mini games on the VMU or was it having save files for CvS and SvC games that would let you share the I game currency/ exp points ?
That's simple. The classic SNK, that made this game, was an extremely competent company, on the same level of Capcom's fg devs (to me even slightly superior). Also they had a sense of going down in glory... so even on the verge of death (that happened in 01) their last games were technical masterpieces like Garou MOTW, Metal Slug 3 and KoF 00 (not polished in gameplay but in everything else). And this SvC is also included. But SvC Chaos was made by the new SNK post bankruptcy, when many of those elite devs were lost to other companies. It was one of their first games together with KoF 03 (super rough title).
this might be the single best 8-bit system fighting game i have ever seen. it somehow manages to look genuinely pretty good and the characters are all written in a fun way (accurately, maybe not so much, lmao). it also seems like, classic arcade CPUs cheating aside, it plays very smoothly too. it's crazy to me that i hadn't heard of this yet, and i'm glad you chose to show it off.
I still remember how mindblown I was when I got this for my NeoGeo Pocket Color. I put more hrs into this game than just about everything I had back then. I always got bodied by Bison in Alpha 3 and Geese in Fatal Fury. Seeing them paired together was crazy. And to think there was still a final boss after that. Love this game. I still have my original cartridge.
Same - I like how depending on your main you either fight Oorchi Iori or Evil Ryu. They definitely AREN'T free, I remember getting so made at trying to fight them.
Yeah these NGP fgs in general, this one in particular, are more well done than expected at first sight. Because its for a handheld and because of the generally accepted idea of the quality of handheld fgs.
I don't know about that....I'd argue Kettou Beast Wars: Beast Senshi Saikyou Ketteisen for Game Boy Color and The King of Fighters Heat of Battle for Gameboy would give it a run for its money
We need a collection with Capcom vs. SNK, Capcom vs. SNK Pro, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO, SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom, and SNK vs. Capcom: The Match Of The Millennium.
This was fun to watch, NGPC fighters are pure joy. This and SNK vs Capcom Cardfighters Clash were definitely the best games on it. And Metal Slug. And the Sonic game was really well done. And Biomotor Unitron. And...
I still think this was the best handheld fighter, with the NGPC's clicky stick. Rush mode is OP, gives you access to magic series combos that can chain into easy half to 100% damage. Some characters can even chain supers. Amazing game with a ton of content, actually puts modern fighters to shame.
This was the best fighting game you could play portably for 5 years, when the PSP launched with an expanded version of Darkstalkers 3. Both are packed with awesome extra modes and bonuses, they're well worth playing today.
Man, this game. Absolutely one of my favorite fighting games ever. Loved the game so much I even went and wrote a FAQ for it. To this day it makes me want a fight pad that has a clicky stick as the d-pad.
SNK was so smart with this art style direction for so limited system. It wasn't a bland compression of graphics like most Capcom handheld fgs, it was a very stylish adaptation. Proving once again their artistic competence. (Personally the classic SNK was superior to Capcom fg devs artistically, but its just a smaller and poorer company) Another point is that the simplified graphics helped SNK to really go all out with the animations, interactions, etc. I mean as opposed to SvC being a NeoGeo game. Because SNK was on the verge of dieing and was busy with Garou MOTW, KOF 00, Metal Slug 3. So spreading out even more of their limited resources during a critical period could have harmed the quality of all those projects.
This is honestly one of my favorite fighters of all time The simplicity/intuitive controls make this game so easy to get into May take a while to unlock characters and supers, but the minigames, modes, and roster choices make up for it Still so sad about the cancelled sequel that had a prototype shown just a couple years ago We could've had a capcom snk game with mega man, garou terry, k', alex, with 3v3 tag all on a little 8bit handheld!

I still have my original see-through NGPC and this game. The music brings back so much nostalgia. Also, since Justin was baffled about the damage, I'll offer some insight. Gamer difficulty not only has the input reading we know and hate, but it combines this with a built in handicap that lowers your atk/def and raises the opponents. I only figured this out after doing damage testing on Normal, Gamer, and Novice modes (Novice mode pretty much does the inverse handicap that Gamer mode does, and I never really played the other difficulty modes). This is one of those games I can see myself rambling about in a demented stupor should I be unfortunate enough to reach that age 🤣
Also, I think the damage gets scaled based on if you are doing 1v1, Tag, or Team (especially with the last 3 stages where the number of enemies is fixed).
