New sub - great content and format. I love fuzz in isolation or when the guitar/bass is way out front in the mix…but I’ve still never been able to solve the vanishing in the mix when the band is at full volume.

there's a couple of issues at play. It all comes down to "bedroom tone" vs real mix. One is where you actually want to sit in a bass fuzz... this depends on what sound you want but also whether you've got other instruments to compete with, and whether you want to SIT in the mix or really CUT. Personally I'm finding myself drawn to fuzzes that have a lot of distortion in the low end without losing the low end. Other than that I like stuff with decent mids, but I don't like when they get obnoxious and trumpet-y.
Another issue with a lot of dirt is that you always have to bump the level up more than you think. The reason is that while many players will pluck a couple of notes and set the level accordingly, where you actually need to be setting your level is closer to where your peaks would be during a performance. That often FEELS too loud in isolation, but it's actually just loud enough. Clipping = compression, so you're not going to match those peaks if where your level is set is to match your low level playing.
