Yeah, I hate when shows try to push the message that you HAVE to forgive someone at fault. You really don't and in fact, forgiveness is something that the person at fault has to earn at the very least. If forgiveness is one-side, then it feels it's just a self-righteous act.

Honestly the coolest thing about that last scene between Zuko and Aang is that it gives you believable stakes for the finale.
Like, its not a spoiler that Aang will win. This is a kids show, the good guys have to win. But with that question, it isn't about whether Aang CAN win. It's about the price he's willing/required to pay in order for that victory to happen, and what that will do to him, and how he thus deals with the situation.
It's not about "Can he defeat Ozai?" it's about "What will he have to sacrifice to defeat Ozai?" Which hits way harder for me, because I can actually believe the show that there is something actually at stake here that the group could loose, all while still "winning" overall.

I believe there's a theory that because of Hama's escape the fire nation probably decided to just kill on sight when it comes to water benders.
(I heard about this from an avatar fan channel, it might be from one of the comics so possible minor spoiler for the avatar comics below)
Apparently their dad traveled around for a bit to try and find a master for Katara but didnt find anyone, unfortunately this is probably how the fire nation discovered that there was a water bender in the southern tribe.

      @xT3ALxPACMANx Рік тому +3

I heavily disagree with this theory. The timing doesn't add up for one, but also, I think this was more about an individuals actions vs it being an SOP within the fire nation if that makes sense. As for the source, I don't believe the father would travel the world to find a waterbending master for his 4 year old daughter. Not to mention in order to do that he would have to visit the North pole and there is zero evidence to assume that imo

Here’s a couple of details you may or may not have picked up on:
12:07 Sokka making a lei out of flowers was symbolic for “deflowering” Suki; in other words they did the deed 😏 (btw the creators confirm this)
27:26 “I’m afraid we’re not taking prisoners today” - this pretty much confirms outright that Yon Ra killed the mother, which means that when Katara next saw her mother she was a charred corpse.

7:19 Big oof. Zuko has that coming for a long time and Katara finally just let it rip. She was even willing to use the spirit water on Zuko only to have him nearly murder her man. That resentment has been festering and it hits when the writers finally bring it to the front.
13:23 Yikes. They didn't have to go there but they did. She's so deep in her feelings she's saying all kinds of hurtful things to everyone, not just Zuko. You can tell she immediately regretted it with how hurt Sokka looked but she's too angry and single-minded to let it show.
20:17 Okay. If the writers didn't get the point across before they're really hammering it home with this one. After being forced to use Blood Bending back in Book 2 Katara broke down in tears at the idea that she is capable of doing something so monstrous to another person. Here she didn't hesitate to use a technique she considers pure evil against the man she thinks took her mother. Even Zuko looks at her in shock.
This episode the writers went all in on Katara's descent into rage and hatred. They did an incredible job with her character here and really sell it. This is peak writing.

Love that Zuko channels Uncle Iroh here, in that he's not trying to tell Katara outright what she should do-- he just goes "I know this is important to you, and I'll be here to back you up while you face it, but it's 100% your choice how you handle it."
I also think one of the reasons that Katara pins the emotions of losing her mother onto Zuko so much is the fact that he took her mother's necklace after she lost it-- that last piece of her mom she had left was taken from her and waved in her face, and she made subconscious connections. (That, and of course the subconscious connections between her family and Aang, since she very deeply considers him her family-- we saw that come out in episode 1 when she lashed out at her dad.) There's just a lot of really subtle, unspoken things about character motives that make perfect sense. The writers are brilliant.

I was bullied for being fat, for being poor, for being that weird kid who doesn't like sports and would rather play video games and watch anime, etc. so other kids would pick on me a lot and after two years of trying to resolve that peacefully and that shit not working I one day snapped and beat the shit out of those two kids who picked on me every day for the last two years.
I was taken to the principal's office, my dad came to school, I got told off in the office, but then dad took me out early and got me ice cream.

But the reality is that humans feel emotions, and regardless of the gender, there's always a way people let the steam off. It can be through violence, emotional and mental manipulations, insults, passive aggressiveness and more.
What people should teach are the consequences and also what Aang said about forgiveness while also facing what is bothering you.

For example I agree with Aang about this, I think you need to forgive and let go of things and that doesnt mean anything bad, it means youre strong and understanding.
But I love how the show doesnt make that OR Katara's decition look bad, she chooses to not forgive, wich I dont think its the best option, but I can RESEPCT her. Just like the show itself showing Aang is correct in a way, but Katara can be correct too.
Just two ways of living your life as a good person.

“I’m afraid we aren’t taking prisoners today”
The last person they took was Hama. Hama who claimed to be the last water bender standing in the Southern Tribe. After she escaped they tortured the other water benders to find out where she would have gone, who assumed she would have fled home as they didn’t know she was the last, or how far she had fallen mentally. They went to the Southern Water Tribe looking for an adult female water bender that they knew they couldn’t take prisoner.

There's a theory that says that the reason why the Raiders wasn't taking Waterbending prisoners was because of Hama, the Bloodbender. Basically, her learning Bloodbending made the Fire Nation realize that taking prisioners was a very bad idea in the long run, prefering to off the problem immediatly.

I apologize if I’m just fucking up the joke here, but Azula can’t actually fly; she can boost her movements by using the force from jets of flame to jump really high and potentially slow or change direction during a fall, but she can’t move in the air with the level of control an air bender might have for example.
I’m only clarifying this because assuming skilled firebenders can just fly around through the air is going to cause you some confusion later on when they don’t.

The show doesn't explicitly say it, but he did kill Katara's mom on the spot, and seeing as he was a fire bender, he definitely just torched her, imagine being baby katara and walking in afterwards with her dad, its justified to call him a monster, and just cause he is a depressing nobody living with his mom doesn't change that fact he burned a living human alive, its a rough situation that Katara has lived her whole life up to now with

I do love Katara's arc of facing her mother's killer and making peace within herself, but there are a couple of points I do take issue with. When she and Zuko were in captivity together in Ba Sing Se, she outright said that she'd been through worse than anyone else, as if she's the only one to have lost a loved one to the Fire Nation. And what she said to Sokka in this episode was just vile, no matter how upset she was. At the very least, we could have seen her apologise to him for it

Petty bully kept reaching over and hitting keys on my board as I'm typing, forcing me to backspace while trying not to derail my train of thought. Repeatedly tried de-escalating, even warned him to stop, then when he reached over again, the next thing I knew was how his throat felt against my palm as my fingers threatened to squeeze as I did that slow head turn and then looked at him and the look I saw in that boy's eyes... I never want to see fear like that again. Teacher asked if I wanted to press charges for the bullying, told her I didn't think there would be further problems. There weren't.

Oh yeah, one of my all time FAVORITE episodes of any series ever. Which means it's time to rant!
Katara's been filling the role of mother since Hakoda left. That means learning a certain sort of responsibility, maturity and restraint a child ought not to need, without her mother to lean on for help and advice. She's been strong for a long, long time, been the rock for her brother and for the Gaang. She hardly got to be a girl, having to rush to being a young woman for everyone else's sake. Which is one of the reasons why this episode is so needed.
It's where she gets to stop being the team mom she has to be, and be the hurt, angry young woman she is. And that anger is *frightening* to behold.
Which makes it all the more cathartic when she gets to let go of the hurt. Few things are as terrible as seeing someone like her in pain, as such, few things are as heartwarming as seeing them get to heal.
Her leaving Yon Rha alive is so important. She got to see the kind of man he was, got to realize how much of a nothing he was. It wouldn't have mattered whether or not she killed him, because his death would have meant *nothing*. She'd still be hurt, she'd still be angry, she'd still have spent time and effort and emotion on him, and in learning this, she learned when it's time to move on from something. Killing him would have been throwing her first kill on top of something that's already eaten away so much of her, for a death that itself wouldn't actually mean anything to her. He wasn't worth any of the things she'd already given and lost to this mess, never mind her first blood.
As for Zuko's part in all this? He was the PERFECT person to undertake this journey with. He understood her struggle on an intimate level, better than any of the others. Aang's too idealistic and would have judged and gotten in her way for what he sees as her own good, Sokka's too logical and would argue that none of this would have brought Kya back as much as he wishes it could, Toph's never been through this sort of thing.
Zuko? He knows what it's like to lose a parent to a monster, to have been unable to do anything about it even though it was about you, to spend years thinking and keeping it inside because there's nothing else to do but seethe and miss them and HATE. When her monster came out and she blood bended, he didn't dismiss it nor try to get her to stop. He understood that this wasn't some lash-out that had to be handled, some dark side of her the quest was gestating within that had to be stomped out. He knew that it wasn't her at her core, it was her at her most hurt, and that stopping it would have done NOTHING to help her.
He also didn't try and get her to go back and punish Yon Rha, didn't even ask her "You're just letting him go?" as most shows would have. He understood what she'd seen in him and how little his death would mean. He trusted her to make a choice that was right by her, something that in their concern, the others would neglect to think about (I'm not bashing them, they care about her and wouldn't want her to do anything she'd regret, but sometimes that kind of thinking can get in the way of certain things, no matter how well meaning).
As an aside before finishing off this rant, Zuko slept on his good ear around her. You go back through previous episodes, you'll see he only only does that in places and around people he feels safe around, and for him to put that kind of trust in someone he knows hasn't forgiven him yet is SUCH a big-yet-subtle sign of his character growth. Things like that are why their ship is my favorite in the fandom, and more importantly, why their friendship and connection in canon is my favorite part of the show.
To end this rant, I will say this; Zuko and Katara are tied for my spot of "Favorite A:TLA Character", and it's for a *damn* good reason.

Queen Alicia, Beautiful and Bold, a few points:
    1) This is a truly amazing episode, and as I said before, it just keeps ramping up all the way through to the finale. Zuko vs Azula on top of Fire Nation War Zepplins over a cloud filled canyon, Katara really cutting loose with her power and rage, Zuko learning that, at literally any time in the last few episodes, he could have been killed VERY easily, it's all just so great!
    2) Your AlicaxDad is correct and requires a great big thank you for raising you right.
    3) Yes, it's ALWAYS a good course of action to punch a racist. That ideology needs to be curb stomped wherever it rears its head.

I share Katara's pain even though I haven't lost my mother my friend from middle school urged me to leave when she and her boyfriend were having an argument that resulted in her getting a black eye and a slap across the face, guilt quickly turned my sadness into anger and I went to the guy and started rag dolling, hitting, kicking, kneeing him in the gut him in a vacant classroom during our schools lunch period and after fifteen minutes I slammed him against the wall and began to squeeze his neck, every part of me wanted to squeeze the life from his body but I remembered this episode and the part where Katara spared her mothers killer and let him go with a vicious warning.
If you ever harm her again I will not hesitate to beat you down like I did just now only you'll need a wheelchair for the rest of your life after I'm done with you
Shortly after my beat down I learned that he had moved away to another state to get away from me and his then ex-girlfriend thanked me for standing up to him but sadly we lost touch after middle school and not a day goes by where I don't think about her. As for you Alicia I hope you find a man who loves you for you, treats you with respect, and spoils you on occasion and I also hope that you have kids in the near future you would make a great mother

It wasn't Katara or Kya they were looking for. It was Hama.
Remember in The Puppet Master? They took the water benders to see if they could find the Avatar's next incarnation: Hama escaped, so they went back to the South to try and find her. That's why he said "my source".
Hama escaping is indirectly responsible for Katara's mother's murder.

I didn’t actually get violent but I remember when I was in middle school these guys kept harassing me during a school dance until I told them “if you don’t leave me alone I will chop of your dicks and choke you with them”. They left me alone but then the following Monday I get called into the counselors office. One of their friends or girlfriend that I never met before had told the counselor I had r*ped her, this was also after I had come out as bisexual and a lot of the girls at my school started acting weird around me (ex: yelled at me cause they could see my bra in the locker room when I was putting on deodorant), but nothing came of it because like I said I didn’t even know who this girl was, turns out I did know her sister who when I told my friends about what happened walked up to me and said “well you look like the type of person who would” and I got in her face so fast and told her that that kind of thing is not appropriate to say to people and that I would beat her if she said that to me again. I’ve been SAed and it still boils my blood thinking about her saying that. I was treated like a sexual predator as a 11-13 year old just cause I’m queer and when I stood up for myself it would just get worse. I’m not a violent or intimidating person. I haven’t been prone to outbursts since I was a child and I’m actually way more likely to do something like sit on my own hands to show I’m not a threat. But there’s a few times where I got in peoples faces and scared them. That being one, and then two times in high school. Once when my best friend thought it would be funny to yank my wig off my head, the whole cafeteria was holding their breath waiting for me to hit her. I didn’t. I told her how disrespectful that is and that if I was anyone else she’d probably already be on the floor. And then another time an underclassman who liked to pick on me yelled down the hallways asking if I was a school shooter cause it was winter and I was wearing my trench coat, which I still have and love, and I don’t think I threatened him but I did get right in his face and told him in a harsh whisper yell that that’s not an appropriate thing to yell down the hallways and did he even realize what would happen if an adult heard that? They’d have to put the school on lockdown and investigate, they would ask me and him about it and look at the cameras and ultimately find out what happened and then he would get expelled, nothing would happen to me, so if he wants to be dumb enough to do that then go right ahead but I wanted to give him a little reality check before he decided to make a habit out of those jokes.

Most shows or stories have the person who was wronged forgive the one who wronged them. The way I see it, Katara not killing the guy was along the lines of ”He’s not worth it.” And her not forgiving him makes sense. Still she got her closure, and that’s what matters
Speaking of stories where the forgiveness happens, I have a personal favorite. A man who’s family was killed by an evil tyrant forgives the tyrant in question…. Okay, that sounds stupid, but let’s just say that there was more to it than that. Much much more.

She may be evil & violent, but she is a very attractive character.
This is a great episode that IMO is in a 'block' of the BEST Avatar episodes. (starting around The Firebending Masters)
So much emotional depth. Plus, it shows our heroes (like Katara) are not PERFECT "white hats". They are PEOPLE. With flaws & weaknesses & shortcomings. She was good enough NOT to murder the man, but "forgiving" him was a step too far for her to go.
    So good.

One thing I thought about. The captain’s whole “I’m not taking prisoners today.” Line. Katara’s mother would have been the first Waterbender capture since Hama. Do you think it was Hama’s escape that caused the Firenation to be like “yeah, no more taking them alive anymore. They’ve adapted.”
