I'm American from rural America and durian is probably my favorite fruit. The richness and the cost make it only a once in a while kind of thing, but it's absolutely delicious. I absolutely love jackfruit too, even though some people apparently think it's also stinky.

Even in that state, you already enjoyed durian so much, so I can tell you’ll definitely gonna love having a different and better experience eating fresh ones then. In Malaysia, we eat them mostly fresh at room temperature, as the taste is better, the smell is a lot more pungent, with clear combination and definition of sweetness and bitterness.

Yeah I was about to say that. I think nurture and culture heavily influenced people's perception on food. As Indonesian, we grew up loving Durian. When I was studying and working in Europe, I had the same reaction as you were on some of the cheeses and cured meat that I tried. I simply couldn't appreciate its taste or couldn't stand the smell. Even though its their delicacy. But, I'm still glad I got to experience it 😅.

@@elsie4802 If there's a Chinatown or an Asian supermarket where you live, you can probably find it there. I personally don't find it's stinky like some people do. However, the smell is really really strong and will linger. If you just want to try it, buy a small portion of it (usually found in the Asian supermarket), eat it and then quickly throw the seeds. If you put it in a refrigerator it will stink up the whole thing😅.
The texture is very custardy but the taste varies depending on the type. Because of the texture, one of the things we would do to Durian is turning it into ice-cream. So, If you find the taste too strong you can mix/eat it with some mildly flavored ice-cream like vanilla.
Whether you like it or not I think it's worth experiencing it at least once. Good luck 👍.

Durians in the US (and NA, Europe, etc.) are nowhere near as good as the ones found in Asia because they don’t need to be frozen in Asia, at least in South East Asia.
I was born and raised in Hong Kong until I was like 10 and had the most amazing durians growing up as it’s only a few hours away from places like Thailand and Malaysia by plane. Proximity means freshness! It’s definitely a controversial fruit, but my mom loves it and introduced me to it when I was really young. Musang King is our favorite!!
One of the things I miss the most about living in Asia is access to fresh, delicious durians haha. Other fruits like mangoes are also absolutely amazing there. The mangoes found in US grocery stores often come from Mexico and are almost always trash compared to the ones from India and the Philippines.
I swear if I were to ever move back, access to my favorite fruits would be a big motivating factor.
Edit: A lot of people hate the smell, but I LOVE IT. It smells like heaven!!! It smells like HOME!

And a tips to cut the durian: There's a star-like shape below the durian, cut the middle part of the star hardly with one hit and twist the knife fiercely. You got the half part of the durian, cut a line on the middle top of the durian and use two hands to push the durian open (recommend to do it on the ground, and to make the durian less spiky hit it with a big knife (or maybe something flat) spiky surface of the durian before you cut), it won't really hurt a lot!

There are many types of durian actually. Maybe some people will say that the durian tastes awful or bitter because they eat the bitter type of durian. There are tons of sweet and also delicate durian which I think is the best. For the taste, it's hard to explain but it's creamy and also sweet honey is just bombed inside your mouth. There's also durian that is really strong like alcohol which I personally don't really like! but I really encourage you guys to try durian! but search for the durian type before you guys eat it because each durian has its own taste! ^^

I understand people not liking something but this fruit provokes such extreme reactions, either you absolutely love it or find it disgusting. That's fascinating to me & some other Europeans. In fact, it was Researchers from the University of Munich who , in 2019, found it was ethanethiol that caused its rank smell, an organosulphur compound added to gas to help identify gas leaks. Even in places where it's called the king of fruit it's banned in hotels & on public transport systems.

It made you blood pressure go down. Neck back tension and dizziness are usually symptoms of low blood pressure. I feel the same when I eat sour fruits too much.

You dont need to use a knife to open it unless its badly deformed. All you have to do is try to find the seams between each pod, and pry appart the gap between the thorns. I find that you'd poke yourself more using a knife because you're applying more force with your off-hand to stabilize the fruit.

I am so curious about Durian.
I cant imagine something which so many say smells so so soooo bad, tasting so so soooo good 😊 I'm super curious and I'd definitely love to taste it.

You should try it, it’s really good. For the smell, it can be bad depending on whether people like it or not, all I can say for it is you can cut or eat your durian in the kitchen and somebody could smell it from the living room.

@@yingxuansoo5472 I will hopefully get the chance to taste it one day. I love trying foods which I've not tasted before. Unfortunately where I live durian isn't available, but one day I hope to visit countries where it is 😊

@@aintnoweiu Yes, apparently it smells very very very bad. Look it up :)
I always wonder who the first durian eater was, because normally if something smells really bad, it's an indication to not (want to) eat it. That first person must have been very special 😆🤭
